F-2 Dependent Study: Frequently Asked Questions As of May 29, 2015, F-2 dependents can study part-time! This means an F-2 dependent can begin a part-time academic program at Northwestern or another area university after 05/29/15. Question: As an F-2 dependent, do I have to study at Northwestern? Can I study online? Answer: The F-2 dependent can study at Northwestern or at any other US university, language school or other institution. Online study is also permitted, as long as it is part-time. Q: What about F-2 children in K-12 schools? A: F-2 children can continue to study full-time in K-12 schools. This includes elementary, middle/junior high and high schools. Q: What does “part-time” study mean? A: At Northwestern, part-time means 1-2 classes per quarter. Other schools will have other definitions of “part-time,” so it is your responsibility to ask! Q: Do I need to apply for part-time study authorization? A: No: no additional authorization or paperwork is needed. Q: What if my F-1 is on OPT? Can I study? A: Yes, you can study while your F-1 is on OPT. However, your F-2 status is always tied to your F-1 status. If your F-1’s OPT will end during your course of study, you must plan to apply for an F-1 yourself. Q: What if I want to study full-time? A: You must work with your university/school to apply for F-1 status for yourself. Q: As an F-2 dependent, am I eligible for CPT/OPT/work authorization? A: No. F-2 dependents are still not eligible for any work authorization (CPT or OPT; this includes internships, research assistantships, graduate assistantships, practicums, co-ops and other academic forms of work). Q: What are some programs at Northwestern that are part-time? A: There are many part-time programs at Northwestern!
