On behalf of the International Office and the Office of the Provost, it is my pleasure to welcome you to Northwestern University. Now that you have arrived, we look forward to working with each of you and providing you with the support you need to accomplish your academic goals. We offer a variety of educational, social and recreational programs throughout the year; they are designed to enhance your educational experience here at Northwestern. We hope that you actively participate in these programs and provide us with feedback to enable us to improve your experience. Reception @ Hilton Orrington Hotel Welcome Reception will be held at the Hilton Orrington in downtown Evanston with the reception beginning at 5:30pm and ending at 7:30pm. Look for International Office Staff carrying purple balloons as they lead you to the Hilton by foot. If you already have your Wildcard, you can take the Intercampus Shuttle. The Intercampus Shuttle picks up at Sheridan and Noyes, across the street from Tech. The shuttle departs at 5:09 pm and 5:24 pm.

The IO is here to help you understand all of the F-1/J-1 visa rules, so you can properly maintain your status and focus on your studies. We will review the rules and answer your questions.

US Slang and Idioms Presenters: Emlyn Torres and Cara Lawson, International Office Location: (refer to group color) What is “What’s Up?” How much do I tip at a restaurant? What’s the difference between “football” and “soccer”? This session will dig into American slang, idioms and unique customs. Practice new vocabulary and ask questions!

Graduate Sidekicks Student Panel Presenters: Graduate Sidekicks Locations: (refer to group color) Come to the popular panel of current Northwestern graduate students! The Graduate Sidekicks (current graduate students and orientation leaders) will discuss academics, the out-of-class experience, and will provide suggestions on surviving graduate school at NU. These panels will feature current Master’s and PhD students. Bring your questions!

U.S. Academic Culture Presenters: Graduate Sidekicks Location: (refer to group color) Graduate Sidekicks (current international and American graduate students) will discuss key features of the US academic culture, including teaching styles, study groups, working with professors and more. They will also answer your questions!
