“Art can give a home the wow factor most people are missing out on…”

Founder Stephanie Crosland-Goss talks about the London art scene, how great art makes great homes and why she left the Tate to start Interrupted Art

Why should people bother about art?

First of all, I don’t think people have to pretend that all art connects with them on a meaningful level. A lot of members or collectors I’ve worked with feel most emotionally attached to art they bought on holiday as a memento, which is great. But I think it’s a misconception that art is for this elite group of people who live and breathe the art world. It’s OK for you to simply like the way it looks, or the way it makes your home feel. Some of the most prolific and impressive collectors I’ve worked with have taken that approach.

What are your top tips for people thinking about buying art?

The classic advice is buy what you like and that’s the most important starting point. It can be a struggle finding out exactly what you like, so exploring that is a good idea before committing. Generally speaking, I would say be brave. Filling a space with a large piece, or multiple pieces can make a huge impact on a room, when playing it safe can be underwhelming. I’d also say try to understand more about the piece, either about the techniques used or why the artist takes a certain approach. Meeting the artist in the process is a great way to do this. It nearly always makes you see the piece in a different light.

What made you start Interrupted Art?

I’d spent most of my career building collections at the British Museum and then Tate, as well as working with private collectors. I slowly realised how many unnecessary barriers there are to enjoying art but also how art can give a home the wow factor most people are missing out on. Not many people feel welcome in private galleries and buying art is often a major financial commitment. Ultimately this doesn’t help artists either as they try to build a following. So I came up with a model which is low commitment but gets people access to great art in the comfort of their home. If they love it they can buy it, but they get to live with it first.

How do you know you’re going to get something you like?

We start with a quick consultation to get an idea of your tastes, and before every delivery appointment we’ll send you three options curated for you. But having a relatively open mind is a good thing and members tend to gain more from it if they’re willing to try new things. On reflection most people are a bit bored with their homes and love the feeling of something fresh. There’s often some genuine surprise and excitement at how much a quality artwork changes a space or the feel of a room.

“My husband and I can never agree on art. Having our hand held and experiencing it at home has been a fun process. We’ve even found a little common ground!” - Rachel M.
“Having my own curator and getting to choose from their suggestions strikes a great balance. I’d be worried if I didn’t get any choice.”
- Olivia F.
“I’ve never considered myself an ‘art person’, but having information on the artist’s work has sparked much more of an interest.”
