ions Clubs International is the world’s largest service club organization with more than 1.3 million members in more than 45,000 clubs worldwide. Clubs are comprised of active men and women in more than 200 countries and geographic areas. The Lions Clubs are best known for fighting blindness. This effort is supported by conducting vision screenings, equipping hospitals and clinics, distributing medicine and raising awareness of eye disease. Lions work through their mission of providing vision for all. Lions have extended their commitment to sight conversation through countless local efforts and through their International Sight First Program, which works to eradicate blindness. The Plant City Lions Club was established in 1929 and is credited with being an integral part of starting the Florida Strawberry

Plant City Lions Club 2015

In addition to supporting local and international sight programs, the Plant City Lions Club supports local organizations like Meals on Wheels, the United Food Bank of Plant City, Steppin Stone Farm, Southeast Guide Dogs, South Florida Baptist Hospital and more. Overall, the Plant City Lions Club invests more than $50,000.00 annually into outreach.

The Plant City Lions Club is also credited with empowering the next generation. The clubs outreach dollars support scholarships for our local high schools and homeschool students, Boys and Girls Scouts, Boys and Girls Club, and Little League. Also, our Leo Program provides the youth of Plant City with an opportunity for personal develoment through volunteering. Leos from our local high schools provide volunteer support for all of the Plant City Lions Club events and activities. They are also active volunteers in their local high schools, for the Greater Plant City Chamber of Commerce and for the United Food Bank of Plant City. The Lions Club motto is “We Serve.” Lions are part of a global service network, doing whatever is necessary to help our local communities.

Festival in 1930. This partnership continues as the Plant City Lions Club hosts the annual Florida Strawberry Festival Queen’s Pageant. The Pageant is one of three major fundraising events for the Plant City Lions Club. The club also hosts an annual golf tournament and runs an 11 day food booth at the Florida Strawberry Festival. As a result of the continued success of these major fundraising events, the Plant City Lions Club has a rich history of supporting much needed outreach in our local community and beyond.

The Plant City Lions Club is proud to honor Auxiliary Members in this special section The Plant City Lions Club Auxiliary has a long standing tradition of helping the Lions Club behind the scenes with the Strawberry Festival Queen’s Pageant. When the Lions Club first became a chartered club in 1929, it was an all male club. That is how the Ladies Auxiliary got started. It wasn’t until 1986 that the constitution of Lions Clubs International was amended to allow for women to become members. It would not be appropriate to have men helping in the dressing rooms and back stage at a pageant, so the wives of the members were a necessary extension of the club. Currently, women represent only 25% of the club, which has improved significantly in recent years, however, with the support of our Auxiliary, we keep the tradition alive. Thank you Auxiliary for keeping us close to our heritage. We appreciate all you do behind the scenes!!!!

2015 Pageant Emcees Dave McKay Dave was born in Buffalo, NY and raised in Bemus Point, NY – a lake community with lush farmland. In fact, he often goes home for holidays and vacations. Right out of high school, Dave knew he wanted to have his own radio show. One of his teachers recommended him to the local radio station in Jamestown, NY and after applying he called every day for five weeks until he was hired! Dave has an easy rapport with artists, which is why they keep coming back to participate in many of WQYK’s events! His favorite aspect of working for WQYK is the staff. He considers them all strong individuals who provide tools for him to become better. You can hear Dave every weekday morning 5-10am with his partner in crime Veronica!

Judge Ashley Moody Judge Ashley Moody, a triple Gator, attended the University of Florida where she earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in accounting and law degree. She later attended Stetson University College of Law becoming a master of law in the area of international law. Judge Moody began her legal career as a litigation associate with Holland & Knight LLP and later served as an Assistant United States Attorney until 2006, when she was elected judge - making her the youngest Circuit Court Judge in Florida. In 2009, Judge Moody was named Outstanding Young Alumnus by the University of Florida and featured by Tampa Bay Illustrated as one of the Bay Area’s “movers and shakers” under 40. In 2010, she was listed in the St. Petersburg Times as one of Tampa Bay’s 10 Most Intriguing People. Judge Moody currently presides in the Family Law Division after serving in the Felony Criminal Division, and as the Administrative Judge over the Juvenile Delinquency divisions. She has served as the elected representative for the 2nd District of Florida’s Conference of Circuit Court Judges, the President of the local Criminal Inn of Court, and Chairperson of the Thirteenth Judicial Circuit’s Professionalism Committee. Judge Moody is a frequent speaker on professionalism and best practices in the legal profession. She also serves as faculty for Florida’s New Judges College.

The Florida Strawberry Festival a Back in 1930 our country was in the middle of an economic crisis. Families struggled to make ends meet, and the morale of America was dreadfully low. But somehow, in the middle of the struggle, the people of Plant City found something to celebrate and the Florida Strawberry Festival began. It was the beginning of a legacy of pulling together as a community, in the good times and the bad, to fellowship and reflect on our blessings. At the upcoming 2015 Festival, we will join together as a community for the 80th time to celebrate our rich heritage and our strawberry harvest. From the very first year, the selection of our Queen and Court has been a highly anticipated part of our Festival. Each year we have been honored to have five young ladies give so generously of their time to represent our Festival with dignity and class. They serve as some of the greatest ambassadors for our Festival as they interact with children, young adults, senior adults and visitors from all parts of the globe. The Strawberry Queen and Court are recognized for their warm personalities, their intelligence and their embodiment of hometown charm. As it has grown significantly over the years, the program has been recognized nationally and held in the highest esteem. The 2015 Queen’s Competition is bittersweet for us, as we honor our outgoing Queen’s Coordinator, Mrs. Sandee Sytsma. Since 2002, Sandee has worked tirelessly to build this program. Each year’s Queen and Court members have found not just a director, but a mentor and a friend in her. Sandee’s personality, character and attitude have impacted each of the 65 young ladies with whom she has worked, and we are forever grateful for all she has invested in the program and in the lives of these girls. I have the utmost confidence in Mrs. Donna Keel and Mrs. Di Lott, who have shadowed Sandee this past year and will take over directing the program, to carry on the long-standing traditions of the Queen and Court program and guide our young ladies as they serve our Festival and community. I would also like to personally thank two other ladies who have significantly impacted the history of the Queen and Court program – Mrs. Barbara Bowden and Ms. Sherrie Mueller. Barbara, who served as Queen in 1948, and Sherrie, who served as Queen in 1971, took on the monumental task 25 years ago of collecting photos and names to compile a historical record of our Queens and Courts. What we now know as the Queen’s Hall of Fame is the result of their efforts. Since that time, they have updated and maintained this exhibit that our visitors cherish. Both Barbara and Sherrie have stepped down from their positions this year, and Mrs. Marsha Passmore, Ms. Dodie White and Mrs. Silvia Dodson will assume the care and maintenance of the Queen’s Hall of Fame. Please take the time to thank Sherrie and Barbara for the countless hours they spent researching and creating an exhibit of this magnitude. We look forward to working with them in different capacities for many years to come. The 2015 Florida Strawberry Festival marks our 80th birthday, and I can tell you it is going to be a celebration! I want to personally invite you and your family to “Come Join The Party!” as we celebrate our youth, our entertainment, our delicious foods, our livestock shows, our exhibits, our rides, our beloved volunteers, our community and, of course, the strawberry. It will be quite a party, and we want you to be there! Thank you to the Plant City community for continuing to support our Festival and our Queen and Court. I wish all the best to each of the young ladies competing in the Florida Strawberry Festival Queen’s Competition and can’t wait to meet the 80th Florida Strawberry Festival Queen and Court. Sincerely,

Paul Davis General Manager

IMAGINE A WORLD WITH HALF AS MUCH FOOD.

Without crop nutrients, that would be our reality.

The work we do at Mosaic is critical to helping feed the world. We provide farmers with phosphate crop nutrients that enable them to produce more food on less land. Essential crop nutrients — like phosphate mined and manufactured in Florida — are responsible for 40-60 percent of the crop yields farmers produce worldwide.* That translates into more abundant and affordable food here at home. As our world keeps growing, Mosaic keeps working to help put food on the table, for all of us.

The History of the Florida Strawberry Festival Queens’ Photo Booth by Sherrie Mueller

Thirty years ago Barbara Alley Bowden, (Florida Festival Queen 1948) was contacted by Festival Director, William Vernon and asked if she would form a committee to establish a history of the Florida Festival Queens and Courts. There were no records or pictures kept of the courts and only the names of Queens and addresses were maintained. Mrs. Bowden immediately called Sherrie Chambers Mueller (Queen 1971) and asked her to Co-Chair their two person committee.

Barbara and Sherrie wrote letters to all the past queens, who had current addresses on file with the festival, asking for court pictures, individual pictures and identification of the maids in their courts. This was all done before the computer age making record keeping and corresponding more challenging. Some of the queens were deceased so the ladies contacted relatives and visited photography shops of Bill Friend and Gladys Jeffcoat. Many of the pictures that were gathered did not have the court maids identified. Barbara and Sherrie spent countless hours researching old Couriers at the 1914 Building Archives. Pictures were compared to published news articles and court pictures of maids and often the children serving as flower girls, heralds and crown bearers were identified as well. Upon collecting the information the ladies sought professional opinions from framers for ideas of attractively displaying and identifying the history of each court. They chose to display a coronation night picture for each year to tell the story of the style of dress and hairstyles worn by the winning contestants. They also displayed two pictures of the Queen in each display, one formal and one optional. The style of the second picture selected for the Queen has varied each year. The framer helped decide the size of the pictures and the best options for displaying the name identification plaques that are framed with the pictures. The ladies researched engravers to make durable plaques that would endure time. Each year’s framed display has been carefully crafted to meet the same specifications of previous years. Each display has the same frame, matting, font to make the exhibit uniform. In addition to creating a display for each year since 1930, Barbara and Sherrie created a booth that also highlighted the current reigning Queen and Court each year. They worked with the Festival Official Photographer, Harry Jeffcoat, to select coronation night pictures to feature each maid individually. The newly crowned Queen and Court were the focus of the booth surrounded by the rich history of the Florida Strawberry Queens and Courts through the years. The booth has been moved three times since Sherrie and Barbara began the project. Plans are being made to move the booth to a new location in 2015 with room for expansion. Barbara and Sherrie continued to be the committee and Co-Chairs alone until 2012 when they recruited the help of Silvia Azorin Dodson (Queen 1968). As the 2015 Florida Strawberry Festival approaches, Barbara and Sherrie are proud of the 30 years invested in this endeavor and of the friendships they 44 Plant City Lions Club 2015
