WELCOME TO FRESH, LOCAL FOOD! We hope this 2017 Headwaters Farm Fresh guide will inspire you to get to know your local farmers, put fabulously fresh food on your table and – as a bonus – explore our beautiful countryside. The easy-to-use maps and listings are designed to help you find the very best meat, fruit and vegetables that farmers in Caledon, Dufferin and Erin have to offer – whether it’s direct from their farms, through a CSA, or at weekly farmers’ markets or independent retailers. The guide, also available online, is brought to you by Headwaters Food & Farming Alliance (HFFA) in partnership with In The Hills magazine. HFFA, a project of Headwaters Communities in Action, is a coalition of community agencies, partners and volunteers working together to build healthier communities. This year HFFA unveiled the Headwaters Food Charter & Action Plan. The result of extensive community consultation, the charter contains six pillars (see page 7) designed to support a healthy and sustainable local food system. Another of HFFA’s exciting initiatives is its farm-to-school program. It gives elementary students a chance to talk to local farmers and engage in hands-on activities, and provides families with an opportunity to participate in local food clubs and to build food skills through family cooking classes. If you want to get involved in creating a healthy and sustainable food system in Headwaters, or to learn more about the food charter, please visit headwatersfoodandfarming.ca. HEADWATERS FOOD CHARTER The Headwaters Food and Farming Alliance (HFFA) envisions a food system that is productive, sustainable, transparent, and fair; supports the health and wellbeing of our residents and food providers; and contributes to a prosperous and equitable economy.

Headwaters Food Charter is built on six pillars:

ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITY We value a food system that reduces its environmental footprint through the responsible management of soil, water, air, energy and waste.

CULTURE AND CELEBRATION We value food as a celebration of our agricultural heritage, cultural diversity and community connections.

HEALTH AND WELL-BEING We value the role of healthy food in promoting mental wellness, healthy growth and development and the prevention of lifestyle-related diseases.

FOOD ACCESS AND EQUITY We value everyone’s basic right to afford and physically access healthy food.

AGRICULTURAL SUSTAINABILITY We value a diverse and prosperous farming community.

ECONOMIC VITALITY We value the role of food and farming businesses in the Headwaters economy.
