As springtime reaches America, most of the continent’s resorts start to shut down. Even when the snow is still 10 feet deep, many famous Canadian and US resorts are closed by early April, often because of land-use agreements with the National Forest Service or because limited demand means they can’t sustain operating costs in low season. However, a few dozen do carry on into May, June and, some years, July.

It looks like 2023 is going to be one of those years for Mammoth Mountain in California. Ski areas in the Western US have been reporting one of the best early seasons for snowfall this century, setting a 20-year record for reaching 10m of snowfall by mid-January.

None has done better than Mammoth Mountain, which at the start of February already had snow lying 6m deep up top.

Mammoth offers the Californian dream for skiers and boarders, including the chance to hit the beach of the Pacific Ocean and the ski slopes on the same day. In similarly snowy years in the past, it has kept the lifts turning till July and even August!
