In the Artist’s Own Words‌ As a child I had the greatest blessing of having grandma in my house with whom I shared my room. Under the bed she kept shoe boxes, and our closeness gave me the opportunity of knowing what she had in those shoe boxes: old pictures of family who passed away, pictures of most of her 11 children as babies or at young ages, and some prayer cards of Virgin Mary and the Sacred Heart of Christ, etc... These treasures weren't her secrets, but she treated them with so much care and love. Don't we all like to see what is in those boxes - what we care about; the memories that make us either happy or sad? Aren't you curious about what an artist saves and cares for, those ideas that remain in boxes or dairies as seeds of his art work? I present my sacred sketches for you here in this Shoebox Treasures show and invite you to view and enjoy.

In the Artist’s Own Words… Doodling: “to draw or sketch aimlessly, especially when preoccupied.” As an artist I use doodling to quiet my inner critic. I welcome distraction, because it allows me to create with an “unthinking mind.” I am free to create from my spirit, not with my brain. No right or wrong exists in doodling. My doodles are the expressions of my true self.

In the Artist’s Own Words… In a constant cycle of action followed by evaluation, combined with reflection and some divine intervention, my paintings are created using many layers of imagery, texture, line and color. Rarely are my paintings completed in one day. Rather, I am always in possession of piles of artworks at various stages of “doneness”. It is always so exciting to revisit these stacks of canvases and papers awaiting the breath of life – each one longing to be fully birthed and presented to the world. To help me “work out” my creative muscles and discover pleasing color combinations or exciting special effects that aid in finishing my artworks, I explore and play in art journals with fearless abandon. Most of these efforts are intimate artistic ramblings never intended to be seen by others, however, in SHOEBOX TREASURES I have been encouraged to lay these journals and other works-in-process bare for you to witness. Enjoy your journey into the mysteries of the artist mind!

In the Artist’s Own Words… The creation of my art pieces includes a process of wonder, exploration and experimentation. Sometimes my experimental pieces end up included in larger artworks. Other times they lay dormant in my studio boxes, waiting for me to continue working with them. For the “Shoebox Treasures” exhibit I am including pieces that show various states of my work. Showing unfinished pieces is a very personal process and definitely something as an artist I prefer not to do. However, as an artist I also take opportunities to expand my own boundaries, so here we go. Dig into my box of treasures and enjoy the process.
