SAN JOSE VOLCANO 5856 m/ San José Volcano is a “classic” of the Central Andes. It amazes from a long distance in the valley because of its imposing white rock body. This is the background scene of the valley and the natural frontier border with the Argentinian territory and it stands dominating with its name and figure over the Volcano river. The story of San José starts in 1831, with some serious attempts to climb it. The Prussian naturist, Meyen, tried to climb it, but he could not get to the top, he stopped 500 meters, before getting there. Later, in 1899, one of the members of Turnverein (gymnastic club) made another expedition but because of the fresh snow there was in the mountain he could not reach the top. The first time someone reached the top of the North of San José was in 1920, when Hans Gwinner, Member of the DAV in Valparaíso, reached 5.740 m. After in 1931, Otto Pfenniger y Sebastián Krückel, members of the DAV in Santiago, reached the main top of the massif. The rout to get to the Volcano, presents a fascinating landscape through small rivers, tall vegetation systems, like the “Engorda”, a plain Valley where some quiet animals go to look for food during the summer. In the way, you can see the thin “Morado” hill, the mythic south wall of the Arenas hill and the “Marmolejo” hill, which is next to San José, as well. At 3100 m high in the west Volcano ladder we find the “Plantat” refuge, an antic construction from 1937 that has remain in time, being used as an obligatory base camp to continue the way that gets to the highest sectors while climbing to the top. In this sector, it is possible to observe two active “cover” type craters with a constant fumarole that throw yellow sulfide smoke. It is an amazing view, that gives us an idea of the forces that exist in the interior of our planet.

ASCENT EL PLOMO HILL 5.424m/ It’s a circuit that will let us conquer the highest hill that can be seen from Santiago, making it one of the biggest andinist challenges of the capital. This is an expedition of high mountain that requires a little more of physical and mental preparation. The hill is 5.430 m high and has a privilege view in comparison to the rest of the high summits from the Andes Mountain, as the famous Aconcagua, Tupungato, Juncal and Marmolejo. There are two glaciers in this area, responsible for the water in the Mapocho river and they have an important archaeological history as well, because there have found rests of Inca culture from 1954 in them. They found the rests of a mummified child of 8 or 9 years and some stone structures that tell us that this hill was a sanctuary of height for the Incas. The Plomo hill, was chosen to build the most important sanctuary of the sacred complex from the austral part of the Inca empire. This was because of the height and size of the hill and because of its big glaciers, its view form far away and from other places that were suitable to install more sanctuaries. On the other hand, the location of this hill made them related it automatically with the winter solstice and the fact that the Mapocho river starts in its base made it even more important. It is possible that this hill had a sacred connotation for the people of the valley before the Inca domination.
