Product Guide 2016/2017
NorthStar Genetics Online The NorthStar Genetics website, northstargenetics.com, has been revamped this year and is equipped with many tools to help growers find the right soybean for their area through extensive variety information including trial data from Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Alberta. We have made it easy to view the data from these plots via an interactive trial map for each variety, which shows you where our plots are, and a database that shares the results. We want our customers to have all the information so they can grow NorthStar Genetics soybeans with confidence.
Growing Soybeans At northstargenetics.com, you will be able to read the most current issue of Growing Soybeans magazine, as well as all past issues, to learn everything you need to know about growing soybeans in Western Canada. Growing Soybeans will also now be publishing original articles online in hopes of providing timely content for our readers. Dear Valued Customers, The summer of 2016 has blown by in the blink-of-an eye! In many parts of Western Canada it started off normal, crops got planted without too much stress and then the weather turned dry. However, for many, the rains started in early June and continued right up to the end of July leaving lots of farmland and crop under water for periods of time. Other locations may have avoided the heavy deluges and are looking at excellent crops. Soybeans have proven, year after year, that even heavy stress events like flooded fields, they will generally pull through and produce a better yield than most other field crops. That appears to be the case again in 2016. For the 2017 spring season, NorthStar Genetics is optimistic about a number of new soybean lines available to growers: First off, the Roundup Ready 2 Xtend trait finally received full registration. NorthStar Genetics will have two new lines with this trait – an early maturing line: NSC EXP 114 RR2X and a mid-season line called NSC Starbuck RR2X. Both of these lines are absolutely top yielders and will be a great addition to the soybean mix on any farm in Western Canada. (See full variety descriptions in this booklet.) Also, we have a super ultra early line, NSC Leroy RR2Y, that will reach full maturity in all parts of the black soil zone in Saskatchewan. For those growers looking for a viable and profitable crop to grow in place of either peas or lentils, this should be their number one choice. Finally, NSC Austin RR2Y is also a brand new line. It is a mid-season maturity with an exceptional disease package and will be a staple variety in many geographies of western Manitoba and south east Saskatchewan. Please take some time to view all our varieties within this booklet. If you have any questions, please don’t be afraid to contact myself or any of our DSMs. We appreciate your business and look forward to working with you in the future. Sincerely,
Ray Wytinck General Manager NorthStar Genetics

#IGROW SOYBEANS What are growers saying about NorthStar Genetics’ products and services? “I choose to grow NorthStar Genetics soybean varieties Ad because I find the genetics very important. I believe they have the earliest genetics with a pretty good yield package to go with it. And NorthStar Genetics has helped us out in terms of agronomics, gave us some tips on what to do, how to do it. “I believe soybeans are going to keep gaining acres as we move forward, and I’ve been recommending NorthStar to other farmers.” Brent McCarthy – Corning, SK

Recommended Seeding Rates Air Seeder - 200,000 - 220,000 seeds/acre Row Planter - 170,000 - 190,000 seeds/acre **Note RR2 varieties are sold at 140,000 seeds per unit.
Factors to Consider When Choosing an Optimal Seeding Rate • Seed quality: best management practices should always be considered when handling soybean seed to avoid any undo damage, potentially resulting in the reduction of seed quality. • Field soil conditions at time of planting: wet lumpy conditions versus smooth, moist conditions; lumpy wet conditions require higher seeding rate. • Early planting versus late planting dates: 10% - 15% increase in seeding rates should be considered if planting dates become late. • Row crop versus solid seeding: row crop planters are more accurate in the placement of the seed and therefore require lower seeding rates. • Pod height to help harvest ease: higher seeding rates tend to increase pod height of some varieties.

Demonstration Plots NorthStar Genetics prides itself on being very aggressive in bringing new soybean varieties to market in Western Canada. Our portfolio of soybean genetics offers growers more depth and breadth than any other out there. Part of the process of bringing new varieties to market is testing lines under a wide range of conditions. Soybeans are planted in a host of different geographies and a myriad of soil types and conditions. Only the top performing lines are commercialized. All NorthStar Genetics branded lines are demonstrated to our dealers and growers through our demonstration plot program and field scale trials. The data achieved from both of these test programs will be recorded and posted on our website. In total we will have 8 demonstration sites across Manitoba and Saskatchewan in 2016 and many, many more field scale trials. Specifically at our demonstration sites all of our commercial varieties are planted in small-scale plots – often replicated – by our own staff with our own equipment. Additionally, we plant a host of “competitor” varieties to see how we stack up to the competition. To further help growers determine how a variety will perform under their local conditions, NorthStar Genetics will provide several units of seed to be planted in side-by-side strip plots against other soybean varieties. This is known as our field-scale trial program, because these strips are planted and harvested with field-scale equipment. Yield comparisons are often made by the use of a combine yield monitor. Growers and dealers are welcome to tour our demonstration sites at anytime throughout the growing season. Additionally, all yield data and field notes taken throughout the growing season will be posted on our website.
