What is boba? Boba are chewy tapioca balls served in a tea-based drink known as bubble tea. They originated in Taiwan and have become a trendy drink in recent times. Would you like to try it? Tasting Food from Local Restaurants Design by De'Jah Jordan '24. Writing by Wesal Haroun'24. Photos by Howaida Musa '23. 1. "Aspen Leaf Frozen Yogurt: This is one of the best frozen yogurt shops in downtown. The owner of the store is very nice and friendly. Very good customer service. There are lots of different flavors and topings to choose from. Frozen yogurt was delicous and full of flavor. Beautifully decorated shop!, " Wesal Haroun '24. Frozen Yogurt: 10/10 Customer Service: 10/10 Definetly would recommend!

Downtown Iowa City is full of hundreds of restaurants. There are many popular and most visited restaurants along with smaller restaurants that haven't become well known yet. Either way, it's time to try out new restaurants in Downtown. Disclaimer: We taste tested restaurants on Memorial day so many restaurants were closed. If we were to have done this on another day, there would have been a much more better inclusion of small businesses and non-well known restaurants. At the bottom of this page is a QR code to the video made to accompany this spread.

2. Saigon's Corner: "This place is great for some authentic Vietnamese food! There are many options on the menu for vegetarian/ vegan eaters. Customers can tell tell the staff's priority is to make sure their buyers are satisfied. The stir fried veggies and tofu vermicelli noodles were amazing and definetly 100% worth the price," Howaida Musa '23. Vermicelli Noodles: 9/10 Customer Service: 10/10 Definetly would recommend!

Onion Rings: 5/10 Burger: 6/10 Customer Service: 8/10 Would not recommend. 4. India Cafe: "The mango shake has a creamy taste. It almost tastes like mango flavored milk. Doesn't taste like a regular milk shake, so it's interesting," Wesal Haroun '24. Mango Shake: 5/10 Customer Service: 8/10 Somewhat recommend. 5. Freddy's Frozen Custard & Steakburgers: "The french fries were extra crispy which was good, however, the flavor was a bit off and needed more salt," Wesal Haroun '24. Fries: 8/10 Customer Service: 8/10 Would not recomend.

“Malaz (my sister) told me to fix my mirrors and so I did but she said I put it too far down. I told her I can’t see the ground though, and she said I didn’t need to. So I was like ok. I kept driving and then she told me to try backing up. I couldn’t see the ground obviously, so I hit the back of the car.” Lesson Learned: “Not listen to her.”

Mazar Hashim ‘24 “It was during drivers ed. We were on backroads practicing and when I was turning I accidentally drove in the wrong lane for a solid minute.” Lesson Learned: “Not go into the wrong lane.”

Masha Arshava ‘24 “I sped at a yellow light and almost got in a huge accident. I didn’t feel like waiting on the red light until it turned green so I sped up so fast and I passed the yellow light. I almost ended up getting in a severe car accident.” Lesson Learned: “Not speed up no matter what the occasion is.”

“My drivers ed teacher told me to take a right so I did but it was a one way road. I entered and the cars were honking at me and I was scared.” Lesson Learned: “Do not believe my drivers ed teacher.”

Ijin Shim ‘24 “I had just gotten my permit and was with my mom, but she didn’t give me the best instructions so I didn’t turn the wheel and I pressed the gas right after I had tried to back up, causing me to go forward really fast towards my mailbox and not down the hill.” Lesson Learned: “Wait until I know exactly what to do before I do it.”

Maddie Otis ‘24 “I turned right on red without stopping first. The drivers ed teacher didn’t tell me it was illegal. I was driving with my dad and he got confused and was like ‘Woah, woah, did you not see that it was red?’” Lesson Learned: “Always stop at a red light because everytime I get to one I think of him. “

The fish aquarium remake was a success. It was a fun addition to the journalism classroom. FOJ’ers agreed on the name bubbles for the fish. Bubbles rests on the counter in the classroom and enjoys keeping the students company. To make the aquarium, add pebbles, marbles, and plant decor to a mason jar. Next, add water and a drop of blue food dye to give the water a hint of color. Finally, add the plastic fish. Hot glue the fish to a string and attach it to the lid of the mason jar. Once done, use the aquarium as decoration for your room, house, classroom, etc.!

FISH AQUARIUM Painting can be one of the hardest things to do. Sometimes you run out of ideas or just don’t know how to paint in general. This craft is quick and easy. Paint a canvas black and let it dry. Then add strings in the pattern you would like. Grab a loofa, dip it in paint, and gently press onto a canvas. Repeat until desired pattern. Let it dry and hang it up! This remake was a fail. The strings need to be taped to the table or else they will move and ruin the painting. Although this was a fail, perhaps it will work for you. Just make sure to follow the instructions carefully!

PAINTING W/ STRINGS This was our own craft idea that we decided to do. First , you need to make a few pom pom balls. Yes, there are pom pom balls that can be purchased already made, however it’s more fun to make your own. (Watch a youtube tutorial on how to make them). Then, grab a plain old pencil and hot glue the pom pom balls on it. Once the glue completely dries, your pencil is ready to be used!

Flowers are beautiful and make for lovely decorations. Pick any letter of your choosing. Cut out the neccessary pieces inorder to make a 3D cardboard model and glue them together. Add floral foam. Remove stem from fake flowers. Put fake flowers in floral foam and you are done. This remake had to be a success. The cardboard model was a little bit smaller than the floral foam, but a few minor adjustments was able to fix that. The floral decor adds color and uniquness to whereever you decide to place it. This is a craft you need to try out!

FLORAL LETTER DECOR Whenever you decide to paint, you should give this craft a try. Paint a canvas black and let it dry. Cut slits around the opening of the straw. Dip the straw into white paint and dab it in a circular motion on the canvas. Repeat until you have desired amount of circles. Finally add stems and you’re done. This remake was a semi-success. If the straw was cut into skinnier slits, it would have made for better circles. Otherwise, this craft is a fun way to use everyday items to create a beautiful painting!

Moisturizing your nails regularly will prevent hangnails 4. When filing, file in one direction to prevent peeling. Period Kits- What do I put inside one? 1. Pads, tampons, and liners 2. Ibuprofen, Advil, or Midol (whichever works best for you) 3. An extra pair of underwear 4. Unscented wipes for extra cleanness 5. Any crackers or chocolates that help ease your mood/ stomach

Creamy Cocoa Butter Petroleum Jelly is great for hydrating dry skin. This leaves you moisturized all day and smell like cocoa butter. When used with baby oil, you get an even better glow. You can find this at Dollar Tree.

Perfume or cologne does NOT cover must. If you smell, don’t be quick to cover it with perfume, cologne, or deodorant. For a quick fix wash under your arms, change your shirt, then put on deodorant. SMELL GOOD! 1. Products like lotion, body wash, perfume, etc, should match sents to enhance the smell 2. Use unscented soap for the private areas to avoid disturbing your ph balance 3. Putting petroleum jelly on before spraying perfume helps it last longer 4. To achieve better-smelling breath, brush your tongue and invest in a tongue scraper. Tounges shouldn’t be white.

SHAVING TIPS: 1. Men’s razors allow the closet shave 2. Always trim hairs if needed before using a razor for an easier shave 3. If you do not have shaving cream conditioner, baby oil, or coconut oil works also 4. In sensitive areas, shave with the grain instead of against it.

Coconut and Olive Oil work great as cuticle oil. They help keep your nails strong and flexible. Flexibility in the nail keeps them from breaking easily. Apply daily if possible. The ones pictured to the right can be purchased at Dollar Tree.

If body scrubs are not your thing, try these exfoliant gloves. They do everything a body scrub does while also cleaning your body. When using these, you wash up as normal, using the gloves as a wash towel. These pictured can be found on Amazon, for a cheaper option try Dollar Tree.

Instead of popping your pimples, leaving scars, and possibly creating more, try out Mighty Patches! They do all the work for you. Put them on before going to bed and wake up with reduced pimples or no pimples at all. You may have to repeat this a couple times. Cocoa Butter is a great moisturizer for normal to dry skin. A little goes a long way, and it also works as a moisturizer for the rest of your body. This also helps reduce dark spots and makes your skin glow. Micella

Micellar Water is great for gently removing makeup. This one pictured to the right also brightens and evens skin tone. When using this, it’s always best to go in with another cleanser and double cleanse. You can find this at Hy-Vee and/or Walmart. PanOxyl helps reduce pimples with benzoyl peroxide. When using this start out with the 4% then move up to 10%. Cleanse in the morning and night for best results. This product can potentially bleach your hair because of the benzoyl peroxide used in it.

Pond’s works great for improving dark spots and works best in combination with sunscreen. Ponds also has a cleanser and moisturizer if you want to try it out. You can find the box to the right in Dollar Tree. Dollar General has a larger size of this product.

S K I N C A R E T I P S

THINGS TO AVOID 1. Toothpaste over pimples This dries out your skin 2. Using hot water to wash face Room temperature works best 3. Using dirty makeup brushes These hold bacteria, try to clean after each use 4. Stop touching your face Your hands touch everything and contain oils 5. Popping your pimples This can cause scaring and hyperpigmentation 6. Overuse of products Stick to washing your face 2 times a day. When you wake up and before you go to bed

SHAVING YOUR FACE By shaving your face, you remove hair and dead skin cells. This evens and brightens your skin tone while helping your products penetrate the skin better. Some other benefits include faded acne scars and hyperpigmentation. Your facial hair will not grow back darker, coarser, or faster. Always shave in the same direction of hair growth when shaving your face!

FUNGAL ACNE Those little bumps all over your forhead aren’t exactly pimples. It’s called fungal acne and products that target acne won’t exactly work. Using any type of dandrift shampoo will reduce your fungal acne. Option 1, use it ask a mask and leave it on for 10 minutes. Option 2, use it as your cleanser, day and night.

Meet Dough! De’Jah Jordan 24’ got her ferret Dough in December 2020. “ I had a name picked before I even picked him out. He was the smallest one and my second choice. Him being my second choice doesn’t make me love him any less.” Dough’s birthday is September 27th, 2020. In these photos, he is seven months old. Ferrets are very energetic and love to be around humans. They show affection by rubbing you with their head or licking. “Sometimes when I pick him up and hold him he might lick me or push his head into my hand. He’s so cute when he wants to be but stinky.”
