“This very morning, I had to go and plunge one of our toilets” -Mr. Bloom

nally majoring in Computer Science and chemistry, Mr. Bloom quickly learned that sitting at a desk or in a lab isn’t for him. Mr. Bloom later realized that all of his life he’s been teaching, from swim lessons to employee training, his is an odd, yet, exhe knew he was meant to pected quote from West be a teacher. teaching valuable. Overall, Mr. Blooms main message to students is to go through your life slow, decide what you want to do with it and dont be afraid to change your mind. Mr. Bloom teaches like he does because he had two very different teachers he respected and took pieces of their stye with him in his life. Learn from others and do what makes you happy, to put it simply. Imagine how different West High would be without Mr. Bloom and presumably other teachers who chose to teach later in life but were too scared to change their mind. By: Ben Gerard

ouble tap, scroll. Double tap, scroll. Again, Again, Again, and Again. The gorgeous girls in expensive dresses showing off their dates with posters. The pressure to post yourself on the internet terrified to the core of the judgement. Social media. We need to be more mature on social media. Countless filters to match society’s standards of beauty. Editing. When is it too much? When can you be yourself? The answer is never. When putting yourself on the internet you have to be ready for the people with no respect to post you on your private stories with captions body shaming, spreading rumors, or saying anything harmful about you to feel better about themselves. And with no consequences they will never learn what harm has come from their actions. What will they think? What will they say? I better not post it just to be safe. The thoughts that go through my brain as I tediously place my photos in the right scrolling order. To not look at a post and compare yourself to him, her, whoever, is almost impossible now that we have gotten used to the standards that decide if

you are beautiful or not. Something will always be wrong with you. The “beautiful” “gorgeous” comments almost make you feel better about the pictures you tried so hard to make perfect, then you realize they just have to say that because they are your best friends. Clothes. Too tight. Too loose. Too revealing. Too much. It will never be enough. Everywhere you go judgement arises. Comments on your appearance that’ll make you cake makeup on your face and buy clothes that will flatter your body.Three,Two, One. The amount of time you have to suck in your stomach before the camera snaps a picture of you and your friends. That's what social media does. According to a study by Florida House Experience Health 87%

of women and 67% of men (of all ages) compare themselves to others on social media. 80% of those

who participate on social media have body dissatisfaction. This is what social media has done to our society. One more example of the horrid things we are facing because of social media. From NEDA (National Eating Disorders Association) American

elementary aged girls who are on social media, 69% say that the pictures influence the ideal body shape and 47% say the pictures make them want to lose weight. These are young children. Social media shouldn’t be used at such a young age in the classroom especially. I understand that some parts of social media can be amazing. Some examples of that being spreading awareness, keeping connections with long distance relationships and friendships, and it can be fun for many! However I do believe that the cons of social media outweigh the pros. In conclusion I think we as a collective should spend less time on our phones and in a pointless app and actually be social. Hang out with people more often. A study from 2018 from 1.1 million teenagers shows that 73% of teenagers are less happy the more time they spend on their phones. It's an easy fix really. So next time you're on your phone because of bórdeme, walk outside. Watch the earth grow around you, hear the birds singing, watch the sky painting before your eyes. Learn how to play an instrument. Learn how to cook. Find a hobby you can enjoy at anytime. By: Leslie Kimura
