staycation transportation

From Hawkeye football games to The Summer of the Arts, there’s always something to do in Iowa City, but it’s not always easy finding parking or getting through the congested roads. There are many other transportation options to get around and enjoy the town. BY KRISTINA ROSEBROOK & CRYSTAL KIM

BUSES

BIKES

SKATEBOARDS

If you can’t catch a ride with your friends, and your parents have ditched you, then take a ride on the bus. The bus is much more cost-efficient than paying for gas, and is better for the environment as well: fuel emissions are considerably less per commuter on the bus. Riding the bus can be the quintessential chance to interact with the community. One might run into their soul mate or have to sit next to a guy who hasn’t showered since prom. Overall, the bus system is efficient, extensive, and age-friendly. “It worked pretty well for me because after school my parents were still at work, and we lived just far enough away that the school buses wouldn’t take us,” said Lexi Goodale ‘19.

Biking and skateboarding are both cost-friendly and much better for the environment. Iowa City’s extensive trails and bike lanes make it easy to get from point A to point B relatively quickly. There is minimal traffic, and it’s possible one could bump into a fellow biking enthusiast. Madeline Ohl ‘19 rides her bike with her father on scenic routes during the summer and loves going to Danes Dairy with her friends. Ohl said, “Usually I bike for fun instead of transportation, so I tend to avoid really crowded areas. I prefer parks and wooded areas.”

Skateboards, because of their smaller, slimmer shape, are easier to hold or to store in one’s locker or backpack. Similar to bikes, there is minimal traffic while commuting and a lot of calorie-burning; one’s legs will look amazing in no time. One downside to skateboarding is that it can be time-consuming and tiring. According to Jared Kula ‘19,after awhile of boarding, his foot will start to ache and blister the day after. Currently, Iowa City is not completely skateboard-friendly; however, an abundance of enthusiasm from the community will be difficult to ignore.

Ever since the infamous Tom Sawyer, summer jobs have gotten the shorter end of the stick. However, don’t be mistaken, whitewashing fences may not be an entirely fictional job, but just as reminiscent as the classic novel. No one knows this better than long-time science teacher Brad Wymer. Wymer has been painting for 30 years. His interest in painting, and later passion, all began his sophomore year in high school in the small town of Lawler, Iowa. For Wymer, his lack of money as a high school student and the lack of part-time jobs in Lawler urged him to start painting as a small summer job. Wymer recalls that he would’ve never thought he would still be painting over 30 years later; however, Wymer is still going strong. Wymer Painting, the name of his business, paints houses, decks, barns, and even machine shops. He hires a lot of athletes he has coached and former students, mainly because he knows their work ethics. He hired his two sons when they were in junior high and loved being able to work with them. Over the years, Wymer has had his share of crazy memorable times. “One my favorite and most diabolical boredom breaking moments was when one of the guys put caulk down the back of one of his partner’s shorts to fill a crack,”

Brad Wymer

Trevor Halapat ‘19

Hunter Davis ‘19

Wymer recalls. Wymer loves being able to work outside during the summer; however, the only thing he doesn’t like about painting is having to stand on a ladder all day, but unlike Tom Sawyer, Wymer work is well compensated. Another part-time worker, Trevor Halapat ‘19, started his summer job assisting the elderly around two years ago. “I had nothing to do over the summer and my dad knows some people that had a lot of stuff that needed to get taken care of,” Halpat said. Halapat moves furniture, vacuums, sweeps, tears down old sheds, and drops off furniture for the elderly who can no longer do such physically-demanding work. Halpat enjoys spending time with the elderly, especially those who tell good stories, and earning a generous $15 an hour. For Hunter Davis ‘18 and Nick Haddy ‘19, working at the Quail Creek Golf Course in North Liberty is a lot of fun. He earns $9.50 an hour picking up the range golf balls, cleaning carts, and delivering food and drinks to the people on the course. When asked about his incentive to start working at the golf course, Davis responded that the owner of the golf course is a close family friend.

He works there weekdays after school and on the weekend in the afternoons. Davis especially likes being able to work with Haddy and already has many stories from the short four weeks he’s been working there. His favorite memory so far has been golf cart drag racing. “At first we would do it to see who had to do clubhouse trash, but then I told them that if they drove the carts, and won, then I would clean all their golf balls. But I won so they all had to do mine,” Davis said. The only thing he dislikes about the job is the how frequently the range has to be picked, which is about six times a day. However it’s well worth it because his boss will be raising his pay $3 and he’ll be able to take over the bar in the clubhouse when he turns 18. Kiah Martin ‘19, worked at the North Liberty Recreation Center as a lifeguard for four months last summer. Martin was bored and wanted something to do, so she applied for a lifeguard job. She said, ”They have tests, you have to tread water for like two minutes and train. [We had to] swim laps, then when you get hired your job is to teach kids to swim.” For West High students and staff, excellence is a tradition, during the school year or not.

The Ukraine Mission Trip

A group of 28 people, including 12 West High students, went to Ukraine through Parkview Church last summer. The mission trip included, but was not limited to, teaching middle class Ukrainian students English, while also getting to learn a little Ukraine themselves, such as when Truszkowski accidently learned how to say beard.

Mission trips not only allow one to grow close to God, but to grow closer to the people you are there with. The missionaries have expressed that the group develops into their second family by the time the leave. The students also got to experience a new culture while in Ukraine and see how it connects back to their very own culture. ”We go to church services [...] then they start doing the worship, the singing, and when that starts, it’s just amazing because the music is a way you can connect between cultures,”Rechkemmer said.

OPINION

THE PRICE OF BEING FEMALE BY GRACE CHRISTOPHER As that time of the month approaches again, you start to approach your hiding place in the bathroom and check your supply of feminine products. Until you realize you need to make that awkward trip to the local superstore and casually wander down that one aisle, which is conveniently located at the front of the store. You have you purse containing all the loose money you have and you grab what you need. You make sure you grab the good brand, because you know the generic brand doesn’t absorb anything. You look around the checkout area to see if they have a self checkout or if they don’t you check to make sure the cashier

is someone you don’t know. As the items are being rang up the price is skyrocketing, $7 for a box of 36 pads, $7 for a box of 36 tampon; that reaches a grand total of $14.00(not including tax). That might not seem like a lot, but this isn’t a lifetime supply. Depending on the person, this might only last you one--maybe two--months. Your period also doesn’t stop after a year, or two, or three, it can last from around 12 years old to about 50 years old, that is 38 years, that means you have about 456 periods in your lifetime. Let’s do the math; you have 2 options for protection, pads or tampons, and 70 percent of

14 MAY 2016 INTRO.WSSPAPER.COM

women use tampons. You’re instructed to change your tampon every 4 to 8 hours, so you use 6 hours as an average. A box containing 36 tampons costs around $7. If you use 1 tampon every 6 hours = 4 tampons per day x 5 days of a period = 20 tampons per cycle x 456 periods = 9,120 tampons. At 36 tampons per box, that’s 253.3 boxes x $7 = $1,773.33. However, some women prefer pads and some combine tampons with panty liners as a backup. For our purposes, we’ll say that women use an average of five liners per period. A box containing 36 panty liners costs about $7. 5 liners per cycle x 456 periods = 2,280 pads. At 36

pads per box, that’s 63.3 boxes x $7 = $443.33. That leads to a grand total of $2,216.66. This doesn’t include other items such as new underwear due to blood stains, acne medication due to the rapid breakouts from your out of control hormones, or midol for your cramps. Congratulations guys by reading this article you learned that you save $$2,216.66 by being a guy. A solution to this is a menstrual cup, I know it sounds really weird. I found this online and what it is, is a reusable soft sided cup that fits inside the vagina to collect menstrual flow. It is reusable, leak proof and only cost about $20 for the basic one.
