Framing The first picture, up above, is one of an oncoming storm in Dallas-Fortworth, Texas. I took it on the drive back from a day out at the shooting range with some relatives. Not even a minute later did the dark grey clouds block out the sunset completely. The storm, unfortunately, wasn’t nearly as impressive as the wall of clouds it produced. The second picture, to the right, is taken in Biology room 26. The spire of the local Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints beside West sits snug inbetween two red geranium flowers.

Above, to the left, sits a young little panda nestled atop my knee. How does a panda manage to stand comfortably on such a bony seat? Don’t ask (although if you really wanted to know, it took an hour, three carrots, and several bite marks). The second picture, to the right, are pages 124 and 125 of Richelle Mead’s, “The Fiery Heart”. The first picture was taken at a party, while the second in the Intro to Journalism room.

Aperture FEBRUARY 2014 7

8 FEBRUARY 2014

ISO Both pictures were taken during the same fierce snow shower. The first overlooked the part of Willow Creek Park beside West Benton street in Iowa City, while the second was close by on Jema Court.

FEBRUARY 2014 9

Shutter Speed Using her fierce feet of fury, Layla Hannaford `17 shows off her kung fu fighting skills. She may look a bit funny seemingly floating in midair, but underneath that calm facade lies a fiery dragon ready to strike. Fans of the infamous Gangnam Style will recognize the fighting style modeled in the second picture. A true testament of what it means to be a West High Trojan.

Portraiture Though her defenses were strong, they were not enough against my advances. I managed to break Hannaford’s seemingly unfailing walls by bringing the camera close to her face. Who knew dragons were camera shy?

Lines A sidewalk riddled with white spots, leading into the unknown (back parking lot), can brighten ever a-dreary winter day. Especially consider ing that it leads to freedom for many West High student, whether it’s by car or by foot. It’s counterpart to the right, however, shows off the majestic Eastern Iowa summer sky. My family and I were returning from Canada, in case you wanted to know about the drop of tree syrup on the window.

FEBRUARY 2014 15

Light To the top left lies the late-evening sky. Taken from my old residence in North Liberty, the light of a dying sunset is reflected off the clouds. To the right is a picture taken from the western-most stairwell on the second floor during a brain-splitting headache.

Perspective 18 FEBRUARY 2014

Above sits a plant also growing in Biology room 26. Don’t be fooled by it’s seemingly tree-like stature - in reality, it is small enough to fit in a pot. To the right is a picture taken from the commons area, positioned as per request from our still, valiant mascot (it’s their good side).

FEBRUARY 2014 19

Free form The sky truly is one of the greatest forms of expression. Directly beneath is a picture from Canada, taken during the drive from Mississauga to Toronto. A solitary rain cloud stands out apart from the ever-approaching sunset. To the right, another picture from my previous residence in North Liberty, this time over my backyard. Above the small pond is a sun shining through cracks in the clouds.

22 FEBRUARY 2014

Another picture from the drive back home from Canada. Taken from the road, the sky was torn between beautiful summer day to ominous storm clouds.

FEBRUARY 2014 23

Free Form A sunset hides behind an old neighbor’s house, which seemingly glows. The light from the sunset shines part of the clouds a rich orange.
