eing an athlete and a person that loves to sleep in, the new ICCSD start times have me torn for feelings and words. The junior high and high school kids will be starting class at 9, but this will also push back practices, performances and amount of light that is available for these activities. Michael Duffy 18’ said “I would enjoy sleeping in on school days. If I could, I would sleep untill noon and go to school untill dinner time” As of now, most school activities start around 3:30 to 4:00, right after school. Next year, these will have to be pushed back; not finishing until after 6:30. By this time parents are already home from work, and dinner might already be served. Often, one of the varsity or fresh-soph teams will be forced to play after 6:30, due Should our school start at nine o’clock?

to the size of West High. We have a freshman, sophomore and varsity team for almost all sports. Does this mean student athletes will be dismissed from class more frequently for away games? As other districts do not have these new start times. Duffy said “I don’t play sports, but I enjoy watching and attending games” If game times are pushed back because of this, students will be getting home very late with homework to do, catch up on social life, and eat. A study done by the CDC in 2015 concluded that later school start times contribute to more focused and productive students. The average kid will get around seven hours of sleep by the end of high school, while teenagers are still advised to receive nine hours of sleep every night. The loss of sleeps contributes to

However, aside from their differences, the brothers both bond in soccer. Since they both play the same position in midfield, both find it really easy to be competitive with one another. “He has the same soccer position as me so it makes me want to be better than him at it… and when me and Ky play together it is a lot more fun,” Coleson explained. Kyler felt the same way too, and even spoke about his brother’s soccer ability. “I don’t want him to be better than me at soccer… Like I know in the future he’ll be better than me, but I sure don’t want that to be now,” he laughed, “it’s

As Coleson begins his interview, Kyler sits in the back and makes a fart noise and then blames it on Coleson who yells at him while laughing. Coleson just smiled and then said “ehhhh yeah,”. The brothers also both agreed that they have gained good characteristics from each other. “[Kyler’s] really nice to everyone and has that carrying personality that makes me want to be more caring,” said Coleson. Kyler also felt that he has become more laid back because of Coleson and he cares less about the little things. Kyler lines up a shot It isn’t hard to see how close these brothers are, not only in age but also in connection. The two both share characteristics and show qualities that they have learned from each other. Although they have their arguments like every set of brothers, the Krupp Brothers are still close and seem to not be entering another “5 year fighting streak” anytime soon.

ed Ginger is a new sushi restaurant in Coralville, they opened in April and serve sushi, sashimi (fresh fish), and other hot kitchen meals such as chicken or fried rice. They also have a bar right at the entrance with a good variety of drinks. Location: Red Ginger is located off the strip, located close to pancheros and Noodles and Company. 901 25th Avenue, Coralville. Prices: Specialty rolls are $12.50 which is more expensive than most places in the area such as Three Samurai, and Konomi. House rolls, the basic rolls, range from $4-$5, while sashimi is around $5 for three pieces. Fried rice was $3.50 Interior: When you first walk in you are greeted by someone at the door to seat you, there is a little couch for seating if you have to wait. A big bar sits in the front while other tables are scattered, almost in no order. Few TVs scatter the nicely bricked walls. The interior looks very new and has a clean look to i Review: Red Ginger is very nicely built with an ideal location right off the strip, although the staff is sometimes hard to communicate with because many are not fluent in english, the food is still very quick. It took around 15 minutes for them to process our bill which was a downside of the restaurant. The sushi was well crafted, and tasted fresh, the sashimi was a bit small and came with nothing to dip it in, but was very fresh. The fried rice was a bit salty, and could have been sweetened with some teriyaki sauce. Overall I would rate gthis a 7/10 but excpect it to rise with more time.

The dreams and aspirations of the West High boys soc-

The West High boys soccer team has started out strong this season with a 13-2 record, with a loss to Bettendorf 0-1 when they were down a few players. Alex Anderson ‘17 said “ the team has been able to have success by scoring early and scoring often, which helps give the boys momentum.” They have done this with a balanced scoring attack with six players

averaging three goals or more. The team’s leader in goals is Nicholas Pitcher ‘16, with a remarkable 92% shot percentage. It also helps when your goalies are able to make saves and the defense is there at all times while only allowing ten goals total the whole year. The boys have had grueling practices to stay in shape and make sure they keep their roll going, they often run hills, go through shooting, passing, dribbling, and goalie drills to keep their skills up to par. They have taken care of their schedule quite easy with only two games coming within a point, and the rest of the games have been won by 2 or

West came up short against City High 2-1 which was decided in penalty kicks and lost 5-4. With multiple very good players on their team. WELCOME TO MATH CLUB +FOR THEM, MATH IS MORE THAN JUST A CLASS

hile most students run for their lockers and cars as the final bell rings, a select group instead head for Room 206. While many dread their math class, filled with complicated equations that symbols that seem like a jumble of confusion, these students set out to make sense of these equations. From their weekly meetings to competitions across and out of the state the West High math club, Mu Alpha Theta, sets out to better understand and enjoy mathematics. Starting roughly 25 years ago, Mu Alpha Theta participate in math competitions around the state and the nation representing West High. Their advisor, James Kirpes, has been with the program for 18 years and is also a geometry and calculus teacher in the building. Roughly 75 students are members of the club, but the number that attend meetings fluctuate week to week depending on when competitions are. Throughout the year they will partake in competitions on average once every three weeks. To anyone entering Mr. Kirpes’ room, their success is obvious. Pilled up on the windowsill overlooking the courtyard are a multitude of different plaques and trophies the team has collected over Kirpes’ 18 years leading the club. Upon further inspection, one will notice that the majority of the plaques and trophies are for first place achievements. Mu Alpha Theta pride themselves not only on complicated math problems, but also on their successes. Last year, they had 12 out of 12 top place finishers, which include the state math championships and the prestigious multi-state math league championship. They’re now the 11 time defending state champions, adding to their already impressive record. Think you have what it takes to join next year? Anyone is welcome to come and join. People have joined for many reasons, not just because they already happen to be very good at math. “I joined math club because I enjoy challenging myself and I thought it would be

a great experience… I always learn new things about math and myself [From math competitions],” said Ben Schroeder ’18. There are also a number of traditions that go along with the club. “Every year in Madison, Wisconsin, we have a tradition to wear the ugliest suit we own,” Kirpes said. Mu Alpha Theta meetings are sure to be for fun for anyone who comes. Candy is handed out to students by Kirpes and discussions are held over recent and upcoming competitions and specific math problems students are currently working on. Whether you already have a passion for math, want to develop a passion for it, or simply want to improve in the subject, math club is a place for you. COMPILED BY NICK PRYOR DESIGN BY NICK PRYOR
