While reading, the book felt like a never-ending cliffhanger without the exaggerated plot and I found myself hanging off of every word. I still think back to the book a lot, and it’s changed my perspective on the world and helped me to become a better person.”

Darlyn Gossiho 22’ Darlyn Gossiho 22’ has been working at McDonald’s since 2018. She gets paid $8.75 though she says it’s supposed to be $10.10. Having a job and trying to focus on school can either be easy or hard for some people. For Darlyn sometimes balancing school with work can become challenging, but she has some advice for other people that might struggle also. She says to “always try having a schedule on what you have to do so you’re not as stressed”. Basically saying know what needs to get done and what isn’t as important.

The Hustle

“The Hustle” is about highschoolers who have jobs and can give you tips on how to balance school and work. Hopefully making you’re life a little less stressfull. Emily Vogt 24’ Emily Vote 24’ is a babysitter. She makes $7 per hour and an extra $2 for additional kids. She has a flexible schedule and says it’s always super fun! “The kids are so funny and it’s almost like a second family!” It isn’t very often she gets overwhelmed with school and work but when she does it is because of longer hours or how many jobs she gets. Her advice would be to take advantage of the time when you’re not at work to get school work done and when scheduling hours make time for school.

Sokona Keita 24’ Sokona Keita 24’ started her business “Styles by Sokona” in early October of 2020. She gets paid about $150-$200 a week. This business is for fun although sometimes it might become stressful. She said, “people usually want me to do their hair on weekdays but I have homework to do during the week and that just gives me a bigger workload on the weekend.” Her advice would be to “try [and] take days off dedicated to school.”

This photo uses a filter.

Akilah Gordon 24’ Akilah Gordon 24’ works at McDonalds. She says the environment is fast-paced. “Even if we are not busy I’m kept busy doing something, whether it’s stocking cleaning, etc.” She makes $10 an hour, “easy money for the most part and a good experience.” Sometimes it can be overwhelming considering how many assignments she receives on a daily and the hours she works after school. “ I try to manage by prioritizing and thinking about the long term outcome.”

DeAsia Lewis 24’ DeAsia Lewis 24’ has been modeling for a swimsuit company for around 10 months (as of November 2020). She says it’s a very chill environment, and the people make you feel comfortable and are very welcoming. “It’s nice to meet other people and still be safe”, says DeAsia. She also promotes their products on her social media. Recently she has tried out one of their foundations and says it’s a really great product. It sometimes becomes a challenge for her to keep up with school work seeing as she travels to different places. Her advice would be to reach out for help because it can be really stressful sometimes. Also, talk to your teachers if you’re behind or not understanding something fully. If you think modeling is something you want to do her advice would be to reach out and really use your social media as a platform. This photo uses a filter.

“Well I think my biggest regret is that at the end of high school I had no idea what I wanted to do. I hadn’t gotten on any job shadows, I hadn’t looked at any careers, and, all I knew was like, I’m supposed to go to college, and I went to college not knowing what I was going to do. And that, really, in my twenties... I made a lot of mistakes because of that. My funny biggest regret though, is not having done enough pranks. We rode scooters through the halls when I was a senior, and we all got into gorilla and zookeeper suits and chased each other around the school. And that was fun, but, I feel like we could’ve done more. We had more potential so I guess I’d encourage all seniors to up their game.”

Andrew Bloom, 2011 “I got through 1st and 2nd trimester with all As, and I got through periods 6 out of 7 in my 3rd trimester with all As. My 7th period class was at an 89.4%. I decided to do a video for my final project rather than just doing an in-class presentation. I just got too technical in the video and didn’t actually follow the guidelines that I should have, so I got docked pretty heavily and that was like my first C grade for an assignment. I think getting that, really took a little bit of a weight off my shoulders. I didn’t really have to try anymore to receive a 4.0 GPA. You limit yourself when you try to achieve something like, perfection. At that point, you’re no longer searching for the most challenging classes and events. Instead you’re really just looking for the easiest route you can go. And I think I would’ve continued that route. If you just go you’re whole high school existence only caring about grades and nothing else, then you’ve basically failed high school in that sense.”

Marshal Moellers, 2010 “I suppose it has to be the “senior play”. We were a very small school and the drama teacher talked me and two friends into playing the parts of gangsters in the play “Kiss Me Kate”. We had one big song and dance routine in the spotlight on a small side stage about 4 feet up from the tile floor. at the end of the song all three of us were to bend down on one knee and do jazz hands for the big finish...problem was, the other two boys had pushed their marks over too far to the right and when i went down to one knee, there was NO STAGE under my legs...I fell right out of the spotlight, right onto the floor and ran backstage half laughing, half crying from the pain. Fortunately, the audience thought it was part of the act...or at least that’s what i ended up telling myself.”

“So when I was a freshman, I was starting my very first basketball game, right. And it was against like a big rival, and I was crazy nervous. And so the very first time I got the ball. I literally took it the length of the court and drove, and so this is in front of like a really big crowd because it was a boy-girl doubleheader and everything. So we’re talking thousands of people, right? So I took the ball the length of the court and I was so nervous that I couldn’t actually see anything in front of me...I mean it had to be a good minute of where I was just dribbling around in a circle and I think finally my coach called a timeout, and I was able to like calm myself down. But it was from there they ended up calling me The Road Runner.”

Erika Mundt, 1999 “Well, I would say my regret was all those four years of highschool but especially 85 and 86 my junior and senior year, there were definitely things going on, socially, politically that I wish I paid more attention to. I wish I was more of an activist and more active in trying to change people’s minds, you know, in terms of social issues and politics. Because I feel so strongly about it now and I’m so impressed by high school kids now. I think you guys are so much more aware and involved than I ever was. And there were definitely things I could have been involved in, maybe minds I could have changed, you know, my little town, my littleschool. I don’t know, but I wish that I had been more aware and had done more to be supportive of some causes when I was younger.”

Kerri Barnhouse, 1986 “I would say probably, the time that a friend of mine and I backed over some tombstones at the City Cemetery. And we got the car stuck because we ran over a couple tombstones. And then when we tried to pull back out, the muffler got caught on one of the tombstones that was laying on the ground. And so we ended up having to walk into town. There’s that and smaller pieces of certain things where I’ve been in a car, in a situation where things could have gone a lot worse. And so when I put all those together, I think they make me a safer driver. I’m sure that that’s one piece of a multi piece puzzle that influences the way I drive today.”

You may think of speech and debate as just conversing seriously about various topics, but in reality some forms of debate are very different. Dramatic interpretation is a type of speech that involves reading an excerpt from a published work in a way that expresses the speech. They may take on different roles in each speech.

Class Specifics

When struggling to stay motivated during online classes, Shreya Khullar ‘22 watches motivational YouTube videos such as tedtalks and or other videos focusing on productivity.

Everyone Loves Rewards! Himani Laroia ‘23 keeps herself motivated and healthy by rewarding herself. For two hours of studying, she’ll set some time aside to look at her phone and it’d keep her productive.

Depending on what class she’s working on, Shreya Khullar ‘22 has a specific way to do work for specific classes whether that’s being writing notes by hand or typing notes online. Also adding to do lists to keep in mind what needs to be done helps keep her on track.

Passing Time One way Himani Laroia keeps herself engaged is she’ll walk between the 5 minute passing time period, as if she is physically going to her classes. “It creates some feeling of normalcy, which [is] needed right now,” explains Laroia.

Work Now Play Later

Relaxed and Ready to Go

Thinking about things he wants to do helps Joseph Alarape ‘23 stay motivated. Thinking about what he’ll get to do after studying, helps him stay focused. “I like to use my favorite past times that I do after studying, and use them as a motivation to push through my studies (work now play later),” said Alarape.

Listening to music and napping helps Joseph Alarape ‘23 study and do homework. He has found it helpful to take short naps to refresh his brain, and listening to lofi to ease his mind.

Fear of Failure Motivation for Annie Schwartz ‘23 is the fear of failure.

Candy in Return It’s either candy or a five minute break for Annie Schwartz ‘23. “I do 20 minutes of work and then take a five minute break. I also bribe myself with candy,” Schwartz said.

Checking Off Lists

Incorporating the Arts

Staying motivated while online isn’t always easy and stress free. Having goals or checklists helps Elise Seery ‘21 to stay motivated and feel productive during the school year.

Creating art and adding accessories to boring work helps Elise Seery ‘21 helps keep her focused in classes.

Free Weekend

Finishing Up

Having the weekend free is a big motivation for Lydia Shin ‘23. The deadline she’s set for herself is to have all her work done by Friday so she “Can chill and watch TV the whole weekend.”

In the comfort of her own home, Sophomore Lydia Shin ‘23 learns how to keep herself on track as she takes online classes. Having tried different study tactics over the course of this trimester, she finds writing down all her due work in a planner and making daily “to do” lists keeps her organized best.

TOP SHOWS What are the most popular shows for West High Students?

TOP 3: 1. “Criminal Minds” 2. “Grey’s Anatomy” 3. “The Office”

“I like ‘Criminal Minds’ because it’s fun to figure out who the criminal is along with them. It is also really fun to learn the different ways that they solve things because a detective/BAU worker has always been something that I was interested in being!” Emily Vogt ‘24

“ “ The show focuses on the cases and doesn’t get side tracked by drama but at the same time, makes you invested in each character. The changing dynamics between the all of the characters draws you in and really makes you care about them. The crimes they deal with are also really interesting and very murdery.”

Natalie Burer on “Criminal Minds”

“I like it because it never gets boring there’s always something happening to keep you entertained, and it’s just really good.”

Melissa Uc ‘23 “Boy Meets World”

“I binged ‘Boy Meets World’ and I really enjoyed it primarily because I had watched the follow up series, ‘Girl Meets World’ beforehand. It was a really interesting prequel to help understand some of the background characters in ‘Girl Meets World’ that were prominent in ‘Boy Meets World’.” “Boy Meets World” is a 90’s sitcom about Cory Matthews and his journey to adulthood with his best friend Shawn Hunter, girlfriend Topanga Lawence, and older brother Eric. With 7 seasons and 158 episodes, “Boy Meets World” shows Cory’s life from elementary school to marriage, and is later followed by the Disney spinoff, “Girl Meets World”.

Alex Curtu ‘22 “Shameless”

“Shameless” is the story of a family of six kids and their drunk and selfish father, Frank Gallagher. The eldest daughter, Fiona, has to raise the rest of the family on her own. The children need to steal food and steal money to live, while their father takes everything and offers nothing. “(I liked ‘Shameless’) Because a lot of the things that happen in the show are so ridiculous that you find yourself laughing the whole time. There’s also 10 seasons of the show but the actors do a good job acting the whole time and it’s cool to see how they grew up as the show progressed since a lot of them started the show as young kids/ teens.”

Maddy Smith ‘22 “‘Parks and Recreation’ and baking shows” “‘Parks and Rec’ is funny without being cringy and overly offensive. I love baking so the baking shows allow me to enjoy baking without doing it, because my dad hates the mess I make when I cook.”

“Parks and Recreation” revolves around Leslie Knope, the deputy director of the Parks and Recreation Department in the fictional town of Pawnee, Indiana. Each of the seven seasons focus on a new problem that Leslie Knope faces, with the help of her friends and co-workers Ann Perkins, Ron Swanson, Tom Haverford, April Ludgate, Andy Dwyer, Jerry Gergich, and Donna Meagle.

Technology Troubles

2020 was a year filled with unexpected events: A nearly third world war, the global outbreak of COVID-19, and many large lockdowns thereafter. Schools also took unexpected turns. For the first time, fully online learning became an option at West High. Both students and teachers became dependent on technology more than ever. Technology certainly can’t always be on your side though, especially when you are not an expert in the field. Similar to this year, technology has surprised us time and time again.

Sudden Shut-Off In one of her science classes in Tri 1, teacher of biology and earth and space science, Mrs. Ziemer, has a computer malfunction. Her computer turned off mid zoom and a student gained control of the meeting. “I was feeling panicked and even a little angry,” Ziemer said. “I just wanted everything to work for my students.”

Fake Identity Logging into a class zoom meeting, freshman Emily Vogt sees that another student has logged in under her name. The student was playing music out loud. “I was sitting there with my camera on, super confused and embarrassed,” Vogt said.

No Way to Save Early on in Tri 1, freshman Helen Penning accidentally deletes her whole assignment while trying to turn it in on Canvas. She wasn’t able to retrieve it because she was typing her answers into the textbox on Canvas. “You can’t go back on any of your actions [when using the Canvas textbox], which is pretty frustrating,” Penning said.

Lost Lesson One of freshman Kamakshee Kuchhal’s teachers in Tri 1 is accidently not sharing their screen; they have muted everyone and closed off the chat, so no one can directly inform the teacher of their mishap. A few students tried to turn on their cameras and signal to the teacher about the issue, but they remained indifferent the entire lesson. “To this day, I don’t think the teacher ever realized,” Kuchhal said.

Getting a Move On At the beginning of Tri 1, siblings, Samuel Rosenthal ‘24 and Ella Rosenthal ‘21, have to pack up super fast and bike to the elementary school near their house for WiFi when their own house’s WiFi goes out. The Rosenthal siblings sat against a wall outside the school because the doors to the school were locked. “It was okay because it was warm that day,” Samuel said.

Papanasi Alexandra Curtu ‘22 loves to eat Papanasi, a Romanian dessert, during special occasions for the excitement factor that goes along with it. “It has a really fluffy taste. It takes a while to make since you have to either fry or boil the donut so I usually only get to eat it during birthdays or holidays!” Chicken Javon Fulwiley ‘24 loves to eat chicken at home with his family. “Peanut butter and jelly.”

Kaju Barfi Advika Shah ‘22 makes Kaju Barfi, a simple recipe to follow, everytime there is a festival to celebrate. “It is important because when girls are born in the family, we hand out little bars of cashew, and I was the first girl child. It’s really good; not too sweet and it’s easy to eat.”

Dumplings Timothy Cui ‘21 loves to make dumplings with his family. “It’s nice to talk, listen to music, and make fun of how bad mine look. And then we get to eat the result of our hard work.” Pupusas Matthew Bedell ‘24 recalls Pupusas for as long as he can remember. “They’re very good and they’ve been a part of my life for a very long time.” Rose Peta Kamakshee Kuchhal ‘24 makes many sweets on Diwali, the Festival of Lights, including Rose Peda. “Since my mom can be a bit of a health freak, Rose Peda is not only healthy, but it gives you the extra mouth-watering flavor of added rose petals in a batter of sweet dough.”

Pão de Queijo Vinicius Marra ‘24 loves to eat pão de queijo for festivals originated in his home country. “It’s delicious and you can only eat it in Brazil. Very traditional food.”

Traditional Tastes Do you have any food allergies or restrictions?

West High is proud to have a diverse group of students. However, food tastes vary and alllergies and food restrictions can influence the foods students eat.
