Framing Below Jenna Zeng ‘19 looks off into the distance, possibly admiring a bird or something...no, she just looked off into the distance because I told her to. I like how she’s framed within the railing, but I also like how the stairsteps act as lines “guiding” the eye to her. Top right, Jenna poses at the bottom of the stairs as I take a picture from above. She’s framed inside the little “opening” in the stairs. Bottom right, Kristina Rosebrook ‘19 enjoys the view from above as I capture the intense moment from below. This one is also on the stairs.

Shutter Speed Left Mrs. McGrane poses for a picture. Lots of Intro to Newspaper students were in the commons during the shutter speed photo day. We would jump off the “bench” (with the pillars) in order to get action shots. Mrs. McGrane saw and then asked if she could pose, resulting in this photo. The light and shadow in the background appeared because so many people took a picture at once and I guess somebody had their flash on... Above, Jenna jumps for joy because she’s over the moon that the lighting is really good and she can see her shadow in the snow... just kidding. Jenna could see her shadow and was obviously super excited about it, but we still needed shutter speed photos (this was the lighting day), a alas this picture was born. She continued to impress at the far left. FEBRUARY 2016 7

Aperture To the bottom left is a photo of a hole in one of the west wing windows. I was inspired by Kristina, who first noticed it, and I thought it would originally make for a good framing photo. But when I wasn’t able to get a decently focused picture of a faraway tree, I decided it was destined to go in my aperture section. The above photo is of some prairie grasses outside West High. It’s blurred in the foreground, but in focus in the background. A similar, but different image appears to the top left.

Portraiture
Left, Jenna prepares to photograph her shadow on the “ice rink” outside West High. Top right, Kristina poses for Allie and Jenna during the day’s photo shoot. Bottom right, Allie Schmitt-Morris ‘19 captures a moment during the photo shoot, presumably of either Jenna or Kristina.

As you can see, below Jenna looks off into the distance, and on the right, smiles at the camera. But what you can’t necessarily tell by looking at these pictures is that it was FREEZING cold that day. I think a lot of people were planning on getting a two-hour delay, including myself, who was superduper smart and decided not to bring a jacket to the photo shoot! But don’t worry, we were only out there for a short time. Oh the things we will do for a decent picture! And thanks again, Jenna, for being my model on this bitterly cold day. :)

Lighting Above, the shadows of Jenna, Allie, Kara Wagenknecht ‘19 & myself share a moment of peace. At left, Kara intricately photographs her shadow on the stairs in the courtyard. I make my way up a little bit in the snow to capture the moment from behind. Little did I know how icy it really was

Perspective Right, Allie & Jenna discuss how they want Kristina to pose for a picture. Left, Jenna sits upon a window seal to capture Allie and Kristina. She would later stand a top the window seal in order to photograph the moments of the photoshoot.

Free Form Right, Maddi Shinall ‘19 stands, hands in pockets, pondering how it can be so cold outside when it looks like it’s really only 20 degrees. She also wonders if maybe she shouldn’t have agreed to model in January, but then comes to the realization that she’s stuck out here until the photoshoot’s over because she won’t be able to make it back inside without slipping on the ice, without the help of her dear friend, Jessica. Top right, she hugs a tree and looks off into the distance. Bottom right, she frames herself and stares into the camera.
