D FRAMING

These photos were taken on the Pacific coast in the summer of 2015. The three bridge photos were taken in Oregon and the wedding photo was in Stanford, California. I snapped the wedding photo as the bride said after one photo too many, “I think my husband is taking the phrase, ‘this will be the best day of your life,’ too seriously. I mean, look at him. He must not think that times will get any happier than this. But if he wants this many photos to remind him that there was a time in which I made him smile- well, who am I to say no? He’s stuck with me now. Till death do us part and all that.”

APERTURE

6 FEBRUARY 2016

These photos were taken in my backyard. The one on the left is of the slide on my swingset. There was a blanket of snow on top, but after chill of the night it was hard ice. The gnome was taken in my garden and the wood pile photo next to my house. I chose the gnome because usually he is peeking through vines and flowers but at this time of year, everything had died, and he was left vulnerable.

PERSPECTIVE

The photo on the left was taken at the state fair. This photo showcases a ride that my family and I refer to as the ski-lift ride in which you can ride over the fairgrounds and witness all the milling people and wafting food and grease smells. The photo on the right is a bird’s eye view of my sister making a smoothie. After I’d finished it and assured her of it’s excellence she said, “Yeah, I cut myself with the knife. So my blood was in there.” When she saw my stricken expression, she hastened to add, “But don’t worry, Lauren. Now we can be as one.”

Natalie Katz (above) is pictured at a stream in Washington state in the summer of 2015. We were hiking down the mountain and she wanted to wash the dirt and dust off in the snow melt. The boat photos on the left were both taken in California in the summer of 2015.

UTTER PEED

The eagle picture and motor boat pictures were ironically, both taken by accident on the Pacific Coast. I shot the eagle and sailboat picture just as it started to rain, and was initially just hoping to capture the sailboat. When I looked through my pictures afterwards, I realized that I’d caught the bird as well. The second picture was at the University of Washington. I’d, again, purely hoped to capture the boat, but included the phrase, “Gentleman, start yer engines.” The pictures on the top and bottom left were taken at the 2015 Iowa State Fair. It had just begun to rain and the reflected colors from the vendors looked like they were running on the ground.

PORTRAITURE The portrait on the left is of my aunt. It was drizzling and foggy and the moisture in ther air did not compliment her hair, so when I pulled out my camera she was quick to cover up. “Oh no, Lauren. Not the hair. Anything but the hair.”

The one on the right is of my sister. She’d just opened her

eyes to say, “Tell the wind and fire that I’ve come home.” I’ve learned over the years not to question what spouts out of her mouth. This time was no exception.

LIGHT The photo on the left is of Pareen, ’18. We were in the auditorium admiring the grand piano’s appearance when I noticed that if I shot the photo a certain way, I could capture her reflection in the Steinway. The photo to the immediate left was taken outside my home on a January night when the slatemetal gray wisps hung over the trees.

The railroad tracks were taken in Palo Alto, California. We’d been waiting for the shuttle to take us back to the campus for over an hour and when it finally sped around the corner, brakes squealing, I knew I had to take this picture. I caught the photo and the bus, so it all ended alright.

FREE FORM The trees below were taken after a snowstorm in my neighborhood. It was around -16 degrees windchill and I could only take a few photos before having to put my camera away to revive my hands.

FREE FOR The boy’s sheep picture was taken in the state of Washington. The boy had just finished weeping because they’d left his sheep behind. As he reluctantly trailed after his mama it was apparent that Sheep accompanied him everywhere. Even to the daily expulsions.

The man on the bike was taken on the Bixby Bridge in California. He had a sign on his bike that said, “Live Dreams.” The girl with him told us that they were biking up the Pacific Coast.

RM The Nantucket boys were shot in-you guessed it-Nantucket. We were waiting for the red ship to raise anchor when one of the boys said to the other, “You think you’re going to catch the fish like that, huh? No bait, no nothing?”

The cows were taken at the 2015 State Fair in Des Moines, Iowa. The cluster of judges were awaiting the winning contestants’ arrivals. Once the winners entered the ring, they led their cows around the perimeter, flaunting their breed to the audience.
