Top left: I don’t know why I climbed underneath the tree, but I found that its branches framed those of another tree quite nicely Bottom left: One of the tables in the courtyard was casting a perfect shadow on the freshly fallen snow. I used the holes in the tabletop to frame the shadow. Above: My friend’s house if filled with little trinkets and knick knacks, including a flowerpot filled wih geode rocks. I picked one up and noticed a hole in the bottom, perfect for framing a tree out the window.

FRAMING

SHUTTER SPEED Right: I am - slowly - learning how to play the drums, and I wanted to get a photo of the bass drum in action. Using a slower shutter speed, I captured movement.

Above: “Flip your hair around, I want to take a picture!” I said to Nikita Bailey, ‘19. Using a faster shutter speed, I caught the action. “My hair looks like a UFO!” She said once she saw the result.

APERTURE

4 FEBRUARY 2014

Right: While walking around in downtown Iowa City, I noticed a lone bench and trash can on a street corner. I liked the way the trees ended up less focused as the camera caught the detail in the wood of the bench. Below: The bike racks downtown were prety empty, so I found myself on my knees looking for a nice shot of its serpent-like shape. A small sticker caught my eye, and I thought it was a nice focal point.

Above: I’ve always liked the color of my eyes, and I take plenty of pictures of them. A time like this was no exception. Right: I don’t have any pets of my own, so when I am at my friend’s house, I love to hang aroumd with her cats. Chai was quite photogenic.

PORTRAITURE

FEBRUARY 2014 3

LINES Above: I liked the single leaf breaking up the pattern on the grate. It seemed to be holding on for dear life. Top right: I found a large warning sign near some lockers downstairs. I hought it would be nice to include he lines of the brick leading to its message. Botom right: Somehow I ended up underneath a set of stairs while looking for some inspiration. I liked the small imperfections of this air vent. 2 FEBRUARY 2014

LIGHT Left: I thought the way the sun “split” the side of he building was a beautiful showcase of light. Below: At first, I was just taking a picture of the leafless bush, but then I noticed its cool shadow, and made sure to include that as well.

PERSPECTIVE Above: I must have looked pretty odd taking a photo of the drinking fountain rather than drinking out of it. Right: I love swinging as much as the next person, so I made sure to take a worm’s eye view photo wile on this rope swing. 2 FEBRUARY 2014

Left: Nikita Bailey, ‘19, attempts to play the guitar while I take photos Below: I have been playing the piano for five years, and in the middle of practicing my song, I thought a photo of my hand on the keys would fit nicely with my free form theme.

Above: I really liked the low lighting in this action shot of my friend playing the drums that made the cymbol stand out. Right: I wasn’t able to play this beautiful bass guitar, so I took some photos of it instead.
