FRAMING I used the large windows at West for a fame around the bare tree outside. I used a similar window at West to frame Megan Boland ‘18. She stood in the middle of the window and I faced the sun so she would be more of a silhouette.

LINES

I found a box filled with metal beams and the lines that they formed looked interesting to me because they weren’t all going in the same direction. I got close to the beams so the details on each one could be seen easier. The lights created a cool linear pattern on the floor. The light lines matched up with the lines on the ground which made the photo more interesting.

SHUTTER SPEED

Using a medium shutter speed I was able to take a semi-blurry photo of the flag outside. I like the way the sky looks in the background with the flag. In this photo the end of the flag looks like it’s blending in with the sky which makes the photo look cooler. With a slower shutter speed I could focus on one of the student’s legs, causing the leg out of focus to have a larger sense of motion.

Getting close up to the plants and bird seed, I was able to capture really interesting photos that shows lots of details in the leaves. Going out in different times of the day also played a part in the way the light hit certain areas of the plants.

APERTURE

FEBRUARY 2016 11

PERSPECTIVE I had to place my camera at the bottom of the plant for me to capture this photo. It was darker farther down but some light came through which highlighted some parts of the plant which looks really nice. I like the way that the details up front aren’t visible but the plant in the back is more clear. For the tree I tilted my camera upwards to make the tree look larger and to focus on the details in the bark. The darker smaller branches look nice with the bright sky.

PORTRAITURE I photographed Megan Boland ‘18 outside to get better lighting and I think capturing the sky looked really nice in the background. It added more color and interest to the photo. I also got a close up side profile of Boland ‘18 to gee a differnt angle. The light was brighter which helped to make the photo come out clearer. FEBRUARY 2016 15

Taking the light photos I went to darker areas in the school and highlighted bright things. I got lower to the floor to see the light and shadows reflect on the floor. I couldn’t get to different levels to photograph the light but I think looking up at the light made the photo look good.

I focused my free form photos on nature, specifically trees and flowers. I took these photos right before the sun set which gave the photos an interesting light.
