My Life-alexis

y life as many would say or I would say is typical. I hang out with friends, work and drive a car like any other teenager, but I do have other things I love to do. Making food or painting it’s something I really love to do when i get bored or I am having a bad day. It’s my go to when I’m having a bad day. Paint allows me to let my feelings out until i can paint no more. When it comes down to the food, like now tell me who doesn’t love food, it’s the best thing ever. my favorite food is sushi and steak. Personally I could never be a vegetarian I love my meats too much to give them up! When people meet me I am either really shy or I can come out of my comfort zone. When someone gets to know me well I can get pretty crazy. I’m the strange and unpredictable one when it comes to some situations. There are times where I don’t ever shut up so then my friend’s just cover my mouth when they are trying to tell me to be quiet. To me my life is boring but that’s just me.

’ve always been the kid in the corner, the one without a partner when the class gets to choose one. No, don’t feel bad for me, I do have friends. I’ve always just been one of the brighter students, as people say, so I usually end up in the advanced class, if there is a choice. No, I didn’t choose to take the class, my parents did. In school, my parents are very strict and sign me up for the classes they think I can be challenged, and I am challenged. Not by class, I’m challenged by my parents. They constantly check my grade, and only perfects and 94% are acceptable for my grades. They constantly check in with my teachers, and make sure I understand all the material I’m learning. When I was younger, this really annoyed me, and I wished they would just leave me alone. But now that I’ve entered high school, I finally understand. They aren’t pushing me to my limit. All this time they have been looking out for me, pushing me to a better future and education so I can be successful in life. I didn’t understand until now, and I’m glad I understand. If you ever feel pressured by your parents, maybe they have a reason for it, and you just haven’t understood yet. But that’s a normal part of growing up.

ho knew one thing could change your life? In December through April, I was doing a unhealthy amount of sports. In one week I did at least 20 hours a week of cheer and other sports. After April, I decided I needed some time off. I lost control of my life. I wasn’t finishing homework, doing projects, and living a healthy teenage life. I decided to take a break from cheer. Granted, it was a hard decision, but now I am realizing that maybe it was a good idea. I missed out and grew distant with my friends. Almost all of my grades are up to A’s. I am not tired anymore. I miss it a lot, but now I realize what I have been missing. I was missing my high school experience. I got to be with my friends. I never stay up past 11 now. Before, I was staying up until midnight on a regular basis. Over all I just feel better. Maybe it was a good idea after all. Natalie Trout ’17

School Expectations At school why do we have teachers that care so much, like its not their lives it ours, an what is with the whole phone thing ?

By Alexis Gronewold kklexis521@gmail.com

W

ith school it can be stressful and you never know if your day will go good or bad. Teachers can make that choice for you sometimes, they give you homework and expectations to be a good student so you could be a good student or you could be one of those students that don’t feel like doing anything in my opinion I am both. I am the quiet one that doesn’t like to raise my hand and that is many other people. We don’t like having that kind of expectation on us is makes us stress out, but when I feel like saying something and think it should be called out I will call it out, I’m not scared to say what I feel. If a teacher does call on me I sometimes know the answer but unless I truly don’t know the answer it makes me feel embarrassed because I don’t know. There are some teachers who don’t call on the ones who raise their hands they do the opposite and call on someone who isn’t and then that person get loss of words sometimes. School isn’t fun but teachers try to make it fun, but with everything from grads to work and trying to have a social life, it can get hard. At points the good expectation of a teacher is good because then we know that the teacher actually is listening to us and paying attention to us, but we don’t always want that. It’s nice to have it there though knowing that a teacher can be a friend too. The expectations of a teacher isn’t always understandable it’s not their grads it’s not their life that is being lost or not achieved my opinion is why should teachers care if we do good or not but it’s because they care and want to make sure that the world after them doesn’t go into rubble. So they try to make sure they can make their students as smart as they can, but the whole phone thing doesn’t make sense to me yes sometimes it is rude, but it’s our phones. What if it’s important and it’s us not listening. So it’s us not doing good in class not the teacher.

You Too Big You You By Katarina Fuhrmeister kafuhrmeister@gmail.com

merica is really huge, not in space or population. I mean the people in America. While America no longer has the highest obesity rate in the world, it follows in close second. About one third of American adults are obese, meaning over one hundred million Americans are obese and overweight. This is a major health problem, causing between 100,000 to 400,000 deaths related to obesity. Being overweight also causes an average of over one thousand dollars more in medical expenses. Also, being overweight creates laziness and lack of exercise. Americans are rather ignorant, not realizing the dangers of being overweight, and the effects on their health. Many people ignore suggested serving sizes, for example ice cream, and eat till they are full or overly stuffed. This is to blame on the way society functions today. Roll models in society today are different than they were 100, 50 or even ten years ago. Many styles and fads, from fashion to diets (like miracle fruit or protein shakes) have come and gone but some tend to stick around. At restaurants, portion sizes have barely changed over the years, remaining mostly two to four times the serving size suggested by the FDA and health officials. These huge portions encourage patrons to eat as much as they can at the table, and take only a little bit of the leftovers, to be either thrown away or taken home for

another night. But most of the time ends up being thrown out at home too. When restaurants do not offer to-go boxes when the meals are finished, people are indirectly encouraged to finish everything on their plates. Have you ever heard the sayings, “don’t waste food” and “clear your plate”? Maybe the sayings are right in not wasting food, but mothers do not have to keep repeating this line to their children. In homes today, if people learned they were eating more than necessary, they could learn to fix their eating habits, and their lifestyle habits. Children could easily clear their plate, but still feel full enough and not over stuffed. No food would be wasted, and the period of laziness after eating would shorten dramatically. Americans could finally take charge of their life and health. America would finally improve in the health department, with the future generations learning the right amount of food and exercise. Americans would be on the road to success in life, learning how to eat right, how much to eat, to exercise, and to maintain a healthy weight. Americans would decrease obesity in the country, and the rate of overweight children would decrease. Just one step could change the future and our lives toward the better, and maybe shrink this colossal country. And the people in it too.

Is Cheer A realSport? Stranger: “Wait, so do you use Pom Poms?” Me: “No.” Stranger: “Do you like can-can-kick then?” Me: “Lol, no” Stranger: “Do you yell ‘go team go’?” Me: “NO!”

T

his has been my life since junior high. It is always been, “Do you use spirit fingers or wave pom poms like you just don’t care?” When people think cheerleading, they think sideline cheerleaders or the Dallas Cowboy cheerleaders. Unless you are someone like me, competitive cheerleaders. When people say cheerleading I think of people flying and twisting through the air, bending their bodies in ways that it probably should not bend. The crazy tumbling that makes us like gymnasts. The fact that we only have 2 ½ minutes to prove ourselves in a routine that is worked on for months. Not a whole season like other sports. Also the National Center for Catastrophic Sport Injury Research says competitive cheerleading is number one on the list of catastrophic injuries for women. Cheerleaders are five times more likely to get hurt, due to wearing no protective gear. Fifty percent of people think cheerleading isn’t a sport, according to debate.org. Why do so many people think this? People say we are just clapping our hands and yelling ‘Go Team!’ That can only count for one part of cheerleading though. Most people link sideline cheerleading and competitive cheerleading together, thinking they are the same thing. When they are very much different. I am on West High Cheerleading and a competitive club called Iowa Elite Cheerleading, and I can’t emphasize how different they are.

a team has. This also helps with a safety factor, 3 year old should not be throwing backflips. Then we move to our tumbling section. Our coaches sit on the edge of the mat and watch our tumbling with hawk eyes. If they see one thing that they do not like, they will call you out. Tucks HAVE to be as high as you are tall and if you tumble with others, your hand should go down at the same time theirs do, and your feet have to land at the same time. Which can be pretty hard if you’re tumbling with someone who is almost 5’10 or someone who is 4’10. Then there’s jumps; they expect us to have high, beautiful jumps, but we have to be in synchronization with each other. This is only about 30 minutes of the two hour practice. Sadly, there isn’t a lot of competitive cheerleaders that go to west high. Or they are to scared to say that they are cheerleaders because they want to be thought as a athlete. Cheerleaders work just as hard as other athletes. We take hits like football players, and we can jump as high as basketball players. Cheerleaders tumble like gymnasts, but we are graceful like dancers. Next time when you say cheerleading isn’t a sport, think of the competitive side, not just the sideline.

At West High we practice once or twice a week. We do a small warm up, stretch, work on cheers, and maybe work on stunts. At Iowa Elite we also do a small warm up and stretch, but then the atmosphere changes. We start doing conditioning, which is probably about as hard as the insanity videos you do in PE, if not harder. Then we move to stunts, making sure everything is rock solid, flyers toes are pointed, everything is legal for our level. There are different levels in cheerleading. The levels are based on how many skills

One Girl Lots of Hope Many Dreams See Freshman, Lexee Nicole, thoughts about two famous coaches coming to her gym and teaching them good skill. All for a show. By Natalie Trout nataliejtrout@gmail.com DESIGN BY//NATALIE TROUT

This is what champions are made of. JUNE 2014 FEATURE 7

What would you do if someone said you were a failing team? Then a coach from another gym, coaches your team? What would you do if you were on a YouTube show, for your failing team? You are put through pain, anger, and the hardest conditioning of your life, and now the whole world can see it. All of your friends, family, and every person in this world. Some people say it even is not the athletes fault, it is the gyms coaches. While some say the girls and boy are told that they are amazing for going through that. This is the gym Rebel Xtreme. Over the last few years the three time World Champion coaches Eddie Rios and Orby Orta fly from California to Iowa for teaching and Cleaning The team Airborne for Rebel Xtreme. Cleaning means that everything is perfectly timed, ever motion is sharp, and you feel the most confident in yourself. This last season was different for the coaches and the girls. They were encountered with a new task. They were asked to be filmed for the new YouTube show CheerHab. If you think cheerleading is easy, go watch this show. The things they do passes the intensity level of any sport. There are not very many girls who go to West High, who do this insane thing. Lexee Nicole ‘17 is one of the few. When asked for her favorite moment Nicole answered “Winning 2014 UCA Internationals. I was one of the most amazing things I have done in cheer. You feel the bond with your team members, I was emotional and I am not even an emotional person.” The girls at Rebel Xtreme have worked with Rios and Orta 8 FEATURE JUNE 2014

before the show. “At first I was really excited about being on the show, but then I got nervous because I thought ‘What if I mess up?’ That would be so embarrassing. “Nicole said “When they were here before, everything was a lot more laid back. Now, just knowing you’re going to be on T.V. for thousands of people you get really stressed out.” “We learned so much from them being here.” Nicole said, “They taught us a lot more conditioning we need. They also taught us that we need to have mind over matter.” A Lot of people in the world do not know what the girls go through. “Mind over matter is having confidence with yourself. Like when you are doing your routine and you tell your I can’t do this. You have to put that to the side and do what you know how to do. In cheerleading, you can really do about anything if you put your mind to it. That really helped me through a lot.” This is Lexee’s first year on West High Cheerleading. She has been on Rebel Xtreme for five years and going on to her sixth. “I went to Rebel Xtreme because I live close to it. I had very little skill when I first came.” Nicole said.”I am so excited to be on West High Cheerleading. I have always wanted to be a sideline cheerleader and couldn’t fit into my schedule.” One of the things Nicole has said she is most excited for the football games, “I have only watched them, I have never cheered at one before.” West high is very different from the all star world. So Nicole is in a whole different world, “West High Cheer is more cheers and chants. It is also more laid back. They both have a family type aspect, but Competition cheer is way more competitive DESIGN BY//KATARINA FUHRMEISTER

and stressful. {For example} If you have a skill you could be in the center one day, but two weeks later another girl may have the skill too. If it looks better than yours, they will put him or her in the center and you will be moved somewhere else. Overall Nicole is very excited for West High Cheerleading. She is also excited for this year at Rebel Xtreme. “For Rebel Xtreme my goal is to do even better than we did last year and go into this year with alot of confidence. I have improved so much over this last year it is crazy,” Nicole said, “My goal for West High is to meet a lot of new people from West and to have a really good relationship with them. I really think we can do that as a team, so I am really excited.”

Soccer can be a life it can be something that no one knows about until they see it but soccer is really one of the most played sports in the world. Also called foot ball. Two of the earliest recorded football type games from Europe include Episkyros from Ancient Greece and the Roman version Harpastum, which similar to pre-codified “Mob Football” involved more handling the ball than kicking. The modern rules of association football are based on the mid-19th century efforts to standardise the widely varying forms of football played in the public schools of England. The history of football in England dates back to at least the eighth century. The Cambridge Rules, first drawn up at Cambridge University in 1848, were particularly influential in the development of subsequent codes, including association football. The Cambridge Rules were written at Trinity College, Cambridge, at a meeting attended by representatives from Eton, Harrow, Rugby, Winchester and Shrewsbury schools. They were not universally adopted. During the 1850s, many clubs unconnected to schools or universities were formed throughout the English-speaking world, to play various forms of football. Some came up with their own distinct codes of rules, most notably the Sheffield Football Club, formed by former public school pupils in 1857, which led to formation of a Sheffield FA in 1867. In 1862, John Charles Thring of Uppingham School also devised an influential set of rules. These ongoing efforts contributed to the formation of The Football Association in 1863, which first met on the morning of 26 October 1863 at the Freemasons’ Tavern in Great Queen Street, London.[14] The only school to be represented on this occasion was Charterhouse. The Freemason’s Tavern was the setting for five more meetings between October and December, which eventually produced the first comprehensive set of rules. At the final meeting, the first FA treasurer, the representative from Blackheath, withdrew his club from the FA over the removal of two draft rules at the previous meeting: the first allowed for running with the ball in hand; the second for obstructing such a run by hacking, tripping and holding. Other English rugby clubs followed this lead and did not join the FA and instead in 1871 formed the Rugby Football Union. The eleven remaining clubs, under the charge of Ebenezer Cobb Morley, went on to ratify the original thirteen laws of the game. These rules included handling of the ball by “marks” and the lack of a crossbar, rules which made it remarkably similar to Victorian rules football being developed at that time in Australia. The Sheffield FA played by its own rules until the 1870s with the FA absorbing some of its rules until there was little difference between the games.

All of the places where soccer can be found to be othe most popular sport .

Which Is Better? At orange leaf in north liberty I got the cookies and cream mixed with coffee, pineapple, strawberry, peach, and wedding cake. At Gurties I got peanut butter, cookies and cream, birthday cake, and strawberry and vanilla swirl. Orange leaf and Gurties had different tasting cookies and cream also their taste of strawberry flavor. Gurties cookies and cream tasted better than orange leafs cookies and cream it had more flavor or strong taste had made it taste better. With the strawberry flavors orange leaf had the taste of strawberry to a T it tasted just like strawberries to me, but with gurties it tasted more artificial it was still good just didn’t taste like how orange leaf had theirs. The wedding cake from orange leaf and the birthday cake from Gurties the cake flavor from orange leaf to me tasted better it had more the taste of a cake it didn’t taste so artificial like gurties birthday cake flavor did. They all where very good but the one that had an iffy taste was the cookies and cream with coffee at orange leaf, it had a strange taste it wasn’t one of my favorites.

14 REVIEW JUNE 2014

At Orange leaf they did have many toppings and lots of them they were fresh fruit and different kinds of candy. What I had for toppings was strawberry and kiwi burst balls and fresh strawberries and blackberries. When someone bits into a burst ball, it burst flavor it to your mouth and it tastes just like Strawberries and kiwis, They had them at orange leaf and many other things those where a few things that I had tried on mine. They also had whip cream and of course I had to put some on mine and that’s what I had at orange leaf. At Gurties I put mint chocolate they also had strawberry burst balls and they tasted better they seemed sweeter than orange leafs strawberry burst balls I also got M&M’s a girls gotta get some chocolate and at both places the price of the food seemed very reasonable.

Alot of people are questioning which is better, Molly’s Cupcakes or Scratch Cupcakes. I got the chance to try them both. At Molly’s I got the Strawberry Shortcake. It had creamy white butterscotch frosting with a fresh strawberry on top. The cupcake was a very moist vanilla cake with actual strawberries on the inside. When I was there I sat at the chain metal swings and savored my cupcake. The only thing I would change is the frosting. I wish it had a little bit more flavor. Overall I was very impressed with my experience there. Also the Yotopia connected is a good idea for someone who doesn’t want a cupcake. I also got the chance to have a cupcake from Scratch Cupcakery. I had a Oh Happy Day. It had a very rich butter cream frosting. The cupcake was vanilla with sprinkles mixed in. You could tell the cake was freshly made because it was so moist. The only thing I would change is what is inside of the store. There is no seating, so if I wanted to sit and eat my cupcake there, I couldn’t.

Molly’s Cupcakes

By Natalie Trout nataliejtrout@gmail.com Photos by Natalie Trout

Overall both bakeries had very good cupcakes. If you are looking for a unique selection of cupcakes, you should go to Molly’s. If you want a sweet rich flavored cupcake you should go to Scratch. The prices were also about the same. Molly’s was three dollars per cupcake and cupcakes from Scratch was two dollars. They were both great places for cupcakes and I would recommend both of them to anybody.

Orange Julius

Scratch Cupcakes What’s a good summer treat? When asked, people tend to say cold food, like ice cream or slushies. But what about smoothies? I got a chance to try a small 12 oz strawberry smoothie from Orange Julius at the Coral Ridge Mall. I took a sip, and felt like the taste of summer was all blended in that cup. A bit on the thin side for smoothies, but was bursting with sweet strawberry sensation. Of course, I was brought back to reality when I heard the screaming kids at the play center in the mall. Not the most quiet atmosphere, and not a place to sit down and enjoy a drink of the addicting Orange Julius strawberry smoothie.

I then walked over to the Barnes and Noble across the way, and walked into a quiet atmosphere, muting the kids outside. I ordered a strawberry banana smoothie at the Barnes and Noble Starbucks cafe, and can tell you one thing: It smells like coffee Katie Fuhrmeister at the cafe. The aroma relaxed me, and waiting in line wasn’t as kafuhrmeister@gmail.com hectic as at Orange Julius, with the screaming kids. I took a sip Photos by Katie Fuhrmeister of the smoothie, and thought the smoothie was a little thick for my taste. The taste of banana way overwhelming, with the strawberry only an aftertaste on the tongue. It felt as if I was drinking a banana, which I would have prefered to eat one instead.

Starbucks

Overall, The Barnes and Noble Starbucks cafe has a relaxing atmosphere, good for reading or studying while sipping a coffee or a treat, and Orange Julius sure knows the way to a sweet-lovers mouth, and stomach.
