Random questions with West High students Q: A: Q:

Not many people sit down in a classroom and think, “You know what? I think I’d sleep in this room if I had to spend one night in West High.” So when I walked up to unsuspecting students in the cafeteria, library, and 9th Grade Center, I got a few strange looks. I asked students a single question off of my list of about twenty and after a long ponder, most students were cooperative and witty. These were their answers.

If you had to spend one night in West High, where would you sleep?

“Mr. Pudil’s room. Mr. Pudil is just really cool and laid back and he would let me stay there.”

- Lane Ungaro `18

Ever since elementary school and the third grade Mi-

chael Moonjely ‘17 has been involved in student senate. “Running was just natural,” Moonjely said. After winning student senate elections for president this year, Moonjely will be president starting next year as a junior, which is a rare occasion. He was involved in Northwest’s student senate and i while in the eighth grade he ran for vice president but ended up losing. said Moonjely, after being asked why he had stuck with student senate every year. What is the difference between the class president,

and student senate president? To be the class president you must be a senior, but the only requirement in being the student senate president is being in student senate the previous year. While being class president you give a speech at graduation and represent only the senior class, the student senate president represents the student body as a whole. This year Moonjely was the publicity co-chair for the student senate. Where he helped with publicizing events and often appeared on the advisory show “This is quick question and answer with Michael Moonjely to help people get to know him as a person As Student President, Moonjely would like to see projects like the food drive be more prominent. Along with being in charge of that he will be in charge of homecoming, pep rallies, and communication with students. “I think we did a good job this year, but I would create better incentives for students to help,” Moonjely ‘17 on how he looks to make events like food drives more popular. “I plan on having at least one pep rally, for homecoming, and will start there,” said Moonjely ‘17. Also adding that this year students were not too excited to go to them. After being asked about what he thought about the two major changes for next year, the change in principal and earlier start time, Moonjely ‘17 said, “Dr. A connected with students on a more personal level” and that was a thing that he liked about him. “The earlier start time is no big deal because it is only five minutes.” said Moonjely ‘17. His opinion on Dr. Schults, he had gone to Northwest Junior High where Dr. Shults was principal, was that he liked him and thought he would do a good job, but did not know him as well. Also moonjely does not think that the change will have a big impact. “I would like people to know that I am approachable,” said Moonjely ‘17, after being asked what he would like people to know about him. He also added, “You can learn something from everyone.”

Style

THe Spirit Of Style An inner look behind some of the dominant style trends at West West High is an ecosystem of styles. In West one can witness the birth and death of many fashion trends. However, in this melting pot of style, three trends have maintained a strong, growing presence at West and around the world in the past few years. Each of these trends has unique qualities that helped to create their massive followings today. WRITTEN BY Charlie Code DESIGNED BY Charlie Code ARTWORK BY Charlie Code

12 the Cholsterhoft

Another major style presence at West comes from the Thrifty style. An often underappreciated style, the Thrifty look has reemerged in the past five years. One of the major defining qualities about the Thrifty look is the variety of forms that it can present itself in. From flannel shirts to your grandad’s clothes, the Thrifty look is expansive. “My favorite part of this style is socks! There’s so many cool styles, when you look at what I’m wearing, you see the socks, socks make the world go round, socks bring it all together,” Said Jenna Shaver

Thrifty

‘17. The Thrifty look is so dynamic that any article can bring the outfit together. Due to its diverse and fluid makeup, the Thrifty look has been able to take the hallways of West by storm, and continues to be a strong contender at West.

Sporty The final, and questionably most worn style at West is the Sporty look. The Sporty look is a style that has been present for countless years, and during that time has firmly established a strong and massive following. One of the benefits of dressing sporty is that it is a style that is very versatile and accommodates athletics extremely well. “Dressing athletically prepares me for whatever I’m about to do. It helps get into the mindset of the sport that i’m about to

play.” Said Brandon Burkheart ‘18. Due to the Sporty style complimenting athletics so well, it has caught large popularity among high schools that have strong athletic departments, like West. The Sporty style is one that has existed and thrived for over a decade. As time progresses, so does the Sporty look. From varsity jackets to Combat Pro, the Sporty style has, and will most likely continue to remain a massive style in West High’s hallways.

Prep The first strong contender at West is the Prep look. The Prep look usually consists of: Khaki shorts or pants, either polo or button up shirts, and a belt. Those who dress preppy normally exert a formal, put together, yet semi laid back atmosphere that blends in well with many social situations. “Being preppy helps you to look good in a bunch of ways. Dressing preppy can help you in an adult setting by looking professional, but it is also casual enough to wear to school and look good,” said Nathan Abramoff ’17.

One main factor to Prep’s success is its simple, yet effective design. It consists of few pieces, all which are easily accessible to the average student. Even though it is only made up a small amount of pieces, the professional look that the Prep style provides has helped it to become one of the most dominant styles at West.

State of the School West High is home to a very unique resource in high schools; one of these is our amazing campus. We, the students of West have a beautiful and impressive option at our fingertips that many Trojans let go to waste. Outside of West exists a relaxing environment for each student during the day. The school grounds provide a nice location that is beneficial to all of us. And yet, only a small percentage of us Trojans utilize this resource. Too many students miss the opportunity to spend 30 minutes of their day outside experiencing and appreciating West’s campus. The school grounds are an excellent place for students to spend their open and lunch periods. The time outside will help to give students even more beneficial and refreshing breaks during the day.

West's courtyard is by far the most accessible, and usable area on the exterior of West. The courtyard has picnic tables and benches that provide great opportunities for eating outside. “It’s fun to eat out there and nee nature while you’re eating and to be able to play with your friends during the break.” Said Nancy Elsheikh ‘16. The outside experience of the courtyard is a great way to switch things up during student's lunch and open periods.

Nancy Elsheikh ‘16

The flagpole area is a very iconic and memorable location at West. While being a small area, it can serve as a semi isolated lunch area. The flagpole commons is a location that is greatly unappreciated at West and while it is not a large location at West, it is a symbolic and important part of West High's history

West’s front lawn is another very iconic location on the campus. Its beautiful trees and massive size adds a very spacious, open atmosphere to West’s front campus. The front lawn is a great is a great contributor to the visual appearance of West. While students are not permitted to eat on the front lawn during lunch, it is a very historic and important part of West High that often goes unappreciated by students at West.
