Hannah is for mainstream music Hannah Krupp ‘17
I have a 2006 Ford Focus which doesn’t have a plug in for an aux cord, so yes I am stuck with Z102.9 and 99.7, along with my varities of country stations. The music that plays off these stations is classified as “mainstream” since it is always playing todays pop/hip hop hits that everyone seems to know the words to. I personally enjoy the music these stations play, always being thought provoking and catchy. “Take me to church, I’ll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies, I’ll tell you my sins so you can sharpen your knife, Offer me my deathless death, Good God, let me give you my life” This is the chorus of “Take Me Church” by Hozier released in 2014. The song has many controversial topics considering religion and sexual orientation which makes you think a lot about what different people go through. Whenever one of these songs comes
on, I always find myself singing along. A lot of them make me think about my life, because I am in that preadolescent stage many of the artists preach about. Most of them are very repetitive, so if you are in a situation where you need to play music you can always turn to mainstream music because most people know it, preventing an awkward situation. For example, “I really really really really really really like you, And I want you. Do you want me? Do you want me too? I really really really really really really like you, And I want you. Do you want me? Do you want me too?” These are some of the lyrics to Carly Rae Jepsen’s “I Really Like You” released in 2015. If you can’t learn these lyrics after just one time of listening to them, I think you are hopeless. Just because I like and can tolerate mainstream music doesn’t make it my favorite. I also really enjoy other less popular artists. However, my favorite mainstream artist has to be Sam Smith. He is extremely talented and all of his songs are touching. They talk about sensitive things, which I really appreciate. “You say I’m crazy, ‘Cause you don’t think I know what you’ve done, But when you call me baby, I know I’m not the only one.” This is the chorus of “I’m Not the Only One” by Sam Smith released in 2014 played on the radio frequently. It addresses cheating on someone
while in a relationship, which I think is important to think about and especially relevant to high schoolers. Although mainstream music can be over played, I think it all has good meaning and morals. It is easy and fun to listen to, there isn’t much to dislike. With all of the artist recently adapting to the Pop style, it is hard not to like mainstream music. So next time you see me driving down the road singing, you can bet I will be singing mainstream music.
“I personally enjoy the music these stations play, always being thought provoking and catchy”
The debate on... mainstream music? Dillon is against
mainstream music When I think of mainstream music, the first thing I think of is the radio station Z102.9. Whenever the radio happens to find its way to that station I swear all I hear are like the same five songs, like Sugar, Uptown Funk, See You Again, Trap Queen and Thinking Out Loud with two or three new ones added in now and then like, Shut Up and Dance With Me or Love Me Like You Do, just to only make it seem like they don’t play an exclusive five songs. These songs appeal to you at first, with catchy synthesized beats you can catch onto easily then sing along with your friends isn’t all that bad at first. “Sugar! Yes please! Won’t you come and put it down on me!” Then you hear that same song like six times in one day, then the song gets stuck in your head, then you catch yourself humming the song and that’s the point when you have just had too much.
You then start hating this song and every time you catch yourself humming it you hate yourself too. Then you have a run-in with somebody who is still in the phase of liking that song, then they start humming the song and it makes you even more mad to the point where now you absolutely despise the song. That’s why mainstream music blows. You get attached to it then one week later you hate the song. If you listen to music that not many people know, then you only listen to it when you WANT to listen to it, and it doesn’t get too old too quick. You actually get to have a very long period of liking the song before it becomes the epitome of music. I have a spotify album with over 200 songs on it and I can guarantee that less than five of them have ever made the Billboard Top 100 songs in america. They’re all not known well and since I have so many I don’t hear the same one that often at all that way it does not get run out in my head. Its perfect. And especially because all music is purely opinion, since I like the songs this system works for me with these specific songs.

Where to get the biggest BANG for your buck in downtown Iowa City
Iowa City is a college town with approximately 22,000 students from the University of Iowa, about 18,500 from Kirkwood Community College, and around 12,000 from the Iowa City Community School District making up about half of the total population of Iowa City, being 71,591 residents. With about half of the population being hungry students, all of the local restaurants and food chains are competing to get the most business from these students, but since students are at school for a majority of their time, they don't have as much time to work as a full time employee making the budget they have for food be pretty tight. This results in the places in the food industry that are getting the most student business are the ones that have the perfect mix of quality food and a reasonable price.
The big talk around town have a very few select restaurants/chains that do have the perfect mix of flavor and cheapness. The most talked about are Pancheros, Java House, Hamburg Inn, Mesa’s, The Vine, Ghurties, and Dane’s Dairy. To see if these places aren't just all talk, I randomly choose three to go review and see for myself if the cheapest item on the menu lived up to the standards people had created for me. I choose to go to Mesa’s, Hamburg Inn, and The Java House to see if the I could be impressed and I think it is safe to say, I was. Hamburg Inn treated me with great service and quality food for a cheap price, The Java House had very chill relaxing music and lighting, free wifi, and comfy couches and seating, and Mesa’s had very interesting wall art along with intense alternative rock music play-
ing, accomanying the great food they offered. I highly recommend that everyone in the area try at least one of these places. If you like it, big whoop, they are cheap so not much is lost but if you like it you can come back again and again to enjoy the food you love for a very reasonable price.

Hamburg Inn No. 2
At Hamburgg Inn No. 2 after sitting outside for a while and scanning the menu for about 5 minutes, I decided to buy one of two items I could even afford, which were the mozarella sticks appetizers. They took about 10 minutes to make and take to my table, but when they were presented I was shocked to see 8 golden and crispy mozzarella sticks which had the creamiest, stretchiest cheese I had ever experienced. They were also accompanied by very thick marinara sauce that complimented the cheesy sticks quite well! I rate a 9/10. Would eat again.
The Java House
On an expidetion downtown with only 2 dollars cash and some pocket change I attempted to get a good snack from The Java House. I went inside and was instantly drawn to the large selection of pastries and such. everything was over 3 dollars except a big cookie called Grandma’s Sugar Cookie and Lemon Poppyseed Muffin which were both priced at a reasonable $2.05. I choose the Lemon Poppyseed Muffin and I swear to you that was probably the best decision of my life. The muffin was extremely soft and moist and was frosted to literal perfection. To be completely honest I actually had more than 2 dollars I just said that to make the article more interesting but I used my dads credit card to buy 3 of these muffins just for myself. Not even kidding. If a mouthgasm is a thing I guarantee I had one. 11/10. Would eat again and will eat again.
Mesa’s Pizza by the Slice
Deciding to not go to a mainstream food chain for a bite to eat is an outgoing and daring decision, but i decided to make this decision once and I know I will not forget it. I passed the infamous Pancheros and went right into the small pizza parlor, Mesa’s. Inside I saw exactly what Iwas looking for; two slices of pizza and a drink for $7.50. Now this may not seem like much, but the slices of pizza they give you are honestly like a fourth of a whole pizza. AND the types of pizza they have are special and unique, I ordered myself a pizza with mac & cheese on it and another just pepperoni and was 110% satisfied with what I had chosen. 10/10. Great for feeding big groups.

REMAKE
Better use of sound effect and more visual effects Very gory and detailed Same idea with just extended childhood of main character and more graphics Unnecessary add-ins make it too long Extension on chilhood make his issues seem partly caused by his childhood full of abuse and neglect

Abstract with the
power of Will
BY HANNAH KRUPP hlkrupp@gmail.com
When you think about art, the first names that come to your head might be Pablo Picasso, Andy Warhol or Frida Kahlo. What goes more unnoticed are the developing artist, the ones with talent and high potential. West High has some of their own artists, one of them being Will Peterson ‘17. Peterson first began art as a youngster in kindergarten with his friend, Phinny Brady ‘17. This is when he began to realize that he really enjoyed it. “We would make castles and stuff, then we would just draw random battle scenes, and then later on we started to draw cars,” Peterson said. Over time, Peterson discovered what works for him artistically. He has switched styles frequently as he has experimented with new ways of creating art. “I used to be about hard lines and [be] very precise, but over time that got annoying, and now I hate it.That’s why I am the opposite now with a very loose style,” Peterson said. Freshman year Peterson didn’t want to focus on art, but rather smoothly transitioning into high school. Sophomore year however, he began to get involved in West’s various art opportunities to expand himself. Peterson started his

art classes with black and white drawing first trimester, and moved up to AP Art by second trimester. “AP Art has people who are actually good working on their own concentrations and new techniques. You have to make two pieces every two weeks, which is a lot. It’s challenging because of the time constraints,” Peterson said. In this class, he did a lot of experimenting with photography and it’s aspects. This trimester, he is taking painting-something new to him. “Well not much of my artwork has been very interpretive it’s been usually pretty literal. I haven’t done too many abstract pieces. Well I have two, the one you have seen started out as a tree and then I got mad at it, and after many layers of paint it kinda turned into a river which is like the blue part of the painting,” Peterson said.
It isn’t hard for Peterson to find inspiration. He finds inspiration in everyday life, nothing in particular. “Usually I just kinda think of random stuff, and then start drawing it or sometimes I will just start making random lines which then turn into something,” said Peterson. He begins most in his sketch book, then later transfers them to a larger scale sometimes with color. Brady has

seen a lot of Peterson’s artwork and understands it, being talented at art himself.
“It’s super duper cool and the best ever art in the universe forever,” said Brady. He has grown particularly fond of Peterson’s art. Peterson According to Peterson’s art teacher, Christian Aanestad, Peterson has made a lot of progress, especially just this year. “I think he has come a long way, I think he is working towards having a style, I think he has started to figure out what he likes and what he doesn’t like, and started to understand why he is taking a picture more than just taking them.” Peterson continues to be involved with and enjoy art. “It broadens your horizons of your capabilities, things you can participate in, and it’s just fun, it is a very relaxing thing to do. Other people seem to find it interesting as well,” Peterson said. Just this year alone experiencing three different types of art classes has really opened up his mind to new styles and ideas. He plans to continue his art hobby, and he gives a piece of advice to aspiring artists. “Just continue to do you, try to expand the way in which you do techniques and the way you ‘do’ art,” Peterson said.

SWEET TREATS The easy, fast way to make ice cream cone cupcakes. Shown step by step so you cannot mess up!
BY HANNAH KRUPP hlkrupp@gmail.com
Step 1: Go to a local store and purchase cake mix of any variety, traditional ice cream cones, cupcake papers, and frosting. Frosting isn’t featured in this because I personally dislike it, but it would be a fabulous addition for most. You can purchase any brands for these, not just the ones I have shown.
Step 2: Preheat oven to whatever it says on the cake mix box, then proceed to make the cake batter. Make sure you have eggs, oil, and water because that is what most mix’s need.
All photos by: Hannah Krupp
Step 3: Put the cupcake papers in the cupcake tins, these will later be peeled off so it doesn’t matter if the cupcake papers are pretty or not. I used some that I had leftover from valentine’s day.
Step 4: Use a cup to fill each cupcake paper about ⅔ full with batter. Once they have batter placed in them, set the ice cream cones over each. Don’t push too hard, because then you will have cupcakes on the outside of the cone or you could potentially break the cone.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE DESSERT?
Step 5: Stick in the oven for the amount of time the box says, times differ depending on the company of the mix. While cooking, the cones may becoming tilted, but don’t worry! The cupcake mix is rising into the cone causing displacement. It will still taste lovely I promise.
“
Mr. Gast, Buisness Teacher I wouild have to say chocolate chip cookies.”
Step 6: After amount of time has passed, check to see if they are done by inserting a toothpick. If it comes out clean, remove from oven and let sit. Remove from pans once cooled a bit, set on cooling rack to cool all the way. Step 7: At this time you may add frosting, sprinkles, or whatever your heart desires.
