t a e m h s Fre shmen e r f g n i m he inco t f o t c e p x STOLL What to e BY KYRA Going from junior high to high school can be scary; you can either overestimate or underestimate things, like how much homework you will have or how hard the classes will be. Especially at a big school like West, things are intimidating. There are over 2,000 people, and you’re the youngest class. “I’m worried about getting lost. . .and teachers yelling because we are late,” said Katelyn Sharp ‘20. “I’m kinda scared of what the upperclassmen will think of me too, but on the other hand I don’t really care,” says Sharp. New passing times and a bigger school are definitely fears felt by incoming freshmen, but the after a couple of weeks, it gets easier. While it seems scary, there are also perks. Like getting a larger variety of classes and meeting new people. “I am looking forward to taking movement and action and having more freedom in choosing classes to take,” says Gianna Smith ‘20.

Many of the upperclassmen have a unanimous negative thoughts about the freshmen class. However, many of the teachers say they wouldn’t want to teach any other level, like English teacher Peggy Dolson, who has been teaching 9th grade English for five years. “Everything is new, and you can still affect them,” Dolson said. With teaching freshmen comes challenges; this is their first high school year so they don’t have the high school experience. Spanish teacher Dave McNair, says he enjoys the challenges of teaching freshmen. “I see a lot of light bulbs go off; they always bring excitement.” said McNair. Teachers enjoy getting the new variety of students, and of course, they get warnings from their current freshmen about the next class. “I’m ready to pass on my current freshmen and I’m excited for the new ones!” said science teacher Marianne McGrane. As for advice, for all you students reading this, Dolson says “get involved; see high school as a positive thing. You have to go, so why not make the best out of it?” As freshmen, sometimes you get overwhelmed and lost. High school may seem scary, but with the right preparation, it can be a piece of cake.
Gotta Catch ‘em All by Ian Prescott
Ah, it’s that time of year again. And I don’t mean summer break rolling around. Though I’m just as excited as anybody else to kick back from school and let the good times roll, but what I’m excited for is something so widespread that it has almost become a name anyone could recognize. And no, I don’t mean the latest vine trends such as on fleek. No what I have in mind is quite different though you could say it is on fleek. Any guesses? No, well then I guess I have to tell you. Pokemon. That’s right people, Pokemon. They’re rolling another 2
games. Sun and Moon. Though I heard about this after the initial reveal I’m just as hyped as any other gamer. I might not have been born in the first ear or grown up around anything before Diamond and Pearl. Though they captivated me like any kid that gets their hands on a ds and a copy of pokemon. But, while trekking around an entire world and forcing animals into submission to fight for our amusement you’ve got to wonder will it ever stop. There are about 720 pokemon in total(not including the various forms of some of them) and it doesn’t seem to be slowing down. Other people have commented on the unstoppability of pokemon and ask what forms pokemon will be taking in the future. Such as in Egoraptor’s(a youtuber)
Pokemon Rap. It tells the story of Ash Ketchum getting out of the hospital only to find out that there are many new types of pokemon. Ranging from a pool boy to a guy named Clyde. It makes you wonder doesn’t it get tough trying to come up with new pokemon without ripping off older generation pokemon? So, what will we see besides the starters and the final godlike pokemon? Because I’m eyeing that fiery cat, once a fire-type starter always a firetype starter. And do you want to catch a giant bat with no claws that could efficiently grab something. Making me wonder it is flying all the time or just floats somehow in outer space like the actual moon. Or, would you rather catch a lion with a head that looks like a flattened flower. But, not only is Nintendo
trying to keep the gene pool of the pokemon diverse they are now making your characters skin color diverse. We’ve been rolling with the male or female choice for a while now, but now we can choose skin color. No longer do you have to be that generic white boy, or girl, running around the world following their dream. No, now you can be a generic person running around the world but with a different skin tone. But, whether you want the classy owl that has a grass bowtie or a water-type who’s only good for circus tricks it’s all up to you. So, put on your sunscreen, grab your pokedex, and get ready to face a whole new world. For while you may not be Ash Ketchum it is your job to Ketchum all.
“Light Up The Night” by Molly Howes Prom is a huge turning point for everyone in high school. Am I going to get a date? How much is my dress going to cost? Is the music going to be as trash as homecoming’s music? The answers to these questions, at least for me, are yes, not too bad and why would you expect anything else. Prom is something that I think everyone should experience, and here’s why. Your friends are going, or your friends are probably going, but still. riends or someone you know will be there and if you’re like me and don’t get out much you’ll get to enjoy yourself. Sometimes getting dressed up and dancing to trashy music with your besties
is exactly what you need to get you through the last couple weeks of school. Time to get dressed up. You have a perfectly reasonable reason to get your hair done, wear a scary amount of makeup, break out fake eyelashes, buy hair extensions and look nothing like yourself for an evening.olling yourself up for a couple of really nice pictures, and then go sweat it all off later that evening. It’s a perfect reason to do all these things. It’s totally instagram worthy. You need to put your new look and expensive dress online for everyone to see. It’s the best part of prom, getting to brag about how much better

you looked, or how much more you spent than anyone else. It’s the ultimate bragging opportunity. In this tech savvy world it’s best to use our new technological advantages to show off ourselves, isn’t that the real purpose of social media? Grinding. Oh yes, the grinding. You will get the pleasure of having your body rubbed up against by all the butts. Whether by accident or on purpose you will be touched by butt. Maybe you enjoy this, or maybe you just want to try this fiendish activity. I say go for it, have fun, make yourself look like a crappy dirty dancing reboot set in this modern day. Go for it. For those of you who don’t, embrace the butt anyway.
It will touch you. Really though, despite my extremely sarcastic nature and the awful music, go to prom. It’s one of those moments where you know you’re actually going to keep the pictures. You’ll get to look back at them with whomever you marry and say “Oh, Yikes” or “Sweetie look at my hair!” Or better yet my personal favorite “What’s that hashtag mean?” Either way, it’s a great way to make great memories, you just have to look past the downsides and stay positive. If you can do that it’s a

We all have things that we dislike about teachers. Maybe not a specific teacher, but the specific things that teachers do. Here is a list of a few of those things: Long quizzes Giving you a packet and not explaining it Under explaining Won’t let you go to the bathroom Taking away your phone Asking for help, and instead they go do something else Put things on the test that you don’t talk about in class Give you a test or quiz every week Making you take a full test on thursdays Overwhelming you with projects at the end of the year Asking a teacher for help and they say you should’ve listened Changing due dates Making the project in class Talking during project work time When teachers give the sub bad notes so they don’t know what they’re doing Picking favorites Making you watch movies When you can’t check out even though it’s the end of the year When teachers tell you to know the big ideas, but then ask specific questions on the test When teachers tell you about a huge test 2 days before said test When you’re told to sit down before anyone can leave, after the bell has rung When teachers hold you after class after someone behaved badly and everyone gets punished When teachers won’t let you compare answers When teachers reprimand you in front of the entire class INTROWSSPAPER.COM MAY 2016 ENTERTAINMENT 5

Ultimate Activities WRITTEN BY MOLLY HOWES
With summer comes soft breezes, the warm sun tanning your shoulders and the desire to finally spent time outside. If you find yourself looking for something to do, grab a few friends pick up a frisbee and give the fastest growing sport in the nation a try. The game of frisbee is typically played with two teams of seven. “It’s basically a giant game of seven on seven keep away.” Said Dillon Crowell ‘17. There are a few rules though, the biggest being once you catch the frisbee you are not allowed to move with
it, and must pass it to a teammate. “The game is played at a relatively fast pace.” Said Nathan Hinkley ‘18. Crowell and Hinkley are teammates on their frisbee team Wings. Frisbee is a fun game to just play with friends, but it is also played competitively. “It’s really fun and if you want to be somewhere later on, do frisbee,” says Sam Loman 18’. Loman also went on to say that their team has a generous amount of team members who play other sports. Such as football, basketball, and soccer. “The team is fantastic and we all get along really
well.” Said Hinkley. The boys all meet on Tuesdays and thursdays to practice. But because of the amount of other activities the team participates in practices are only held when people are able to attend. To play frisbee one does not need to only play frisbee. They just need an interest in the game. “If you wanna be on the team you’re on the team” Said Crowell. The reason people want to be on the team is the amount of fun had when on the field.“When you are playing with your friends the competitive nature comes out in everyone and it makes the
game more exciting.” Said Hinkley. The competitive nature is what drives a game in frisbee. “At practice we get better competition,”said Crowell, “Iowa teams are garbage.” When asked if people should try the game Hinkley said “People should because it’s actually really fun.” So if you’re a competitive person at heart and are looking to enjoy the summer sun grab a few friends and try a game of frisbee.

You’re all caught up on the times! You’re known to stay fresh and chill. And you got super supportive friends on your side.
You like staying fashionable while still singing a tune that’s your own. You’re a free spirit who can’t be “tied” down.
You’re the type of person who doesn’t care what other people say. You like the outdoors and enjoy a good time. Life with you is always colorful.
You enjoy being yourself and picking footwear that reflects that. You’re a low-key person, most of the time, but you don’t let that bring your down.
