As the end of the school year is upon us and I’m looking back on this year, I would have never expected to be where I am today. I recall during Sophomore year I signed up for Foundations of Journalism for the soul purpose of getting that last year of English credit I needed so I wouldn’t have to take an English class my Senior year. Now here I am applying to be on West Side Story Staff for the 2018-2019 school year even though I have completed my required English courses to graduate. Why? Because I found a love for design in my FOJ class. This last unit where we’ve created our own publication has been the most fun for me because I got to do a LOT of designing, as you can see in our publication. Enjoy!

As the school year ends, I look back to the first day I walked into the Journalism room, not liking it at first, but looking back on all the projects I have learned so much and have grown as a writer. This last project have been so much fun but i’m definitely looking forward to summer.

BROADCAST YOURSELF: PAIGE UNCAGED You pull out your camera, turn it on, and start talking. By the end of the day your arm is sore from holding it up all day and your voice is sore from talking all day, but you upload your footage anyway, edit it and publish it on the internet—proud. Paige Harken ‘18 has experienced all out, by starting her own YouTube Vlog channel. Harken discovered YouTube at a young age, through watching beauty gurus and other videos to teach her how to do makeup and other DIY projects. “Its like I had found this entire new world,” Harken said. She uploaded her first video in eighth grade. It was a comical skit video, but it was half-skit, half-tutorial for doing your makeup, also known as DIY. She tried to make it funny, but then deleted it right after posting because she was embarrassed of what other people thought. So far the only places Harken has made vlogs was at Disney, where people were taking lots of pictures or videos, so no one was really paying attention to you or what you were doing. Harken also vlogged the production West Side Story, where she played Baby John, a boy in the gang of Jets. Harken plans on vlogging more when she is in college. “When editing, the process is very therapeutic, going through the film, and adding special effects, words, or music is

really fun, and it's very entertaining,” Harken said. Harken’s YouTube channel, Paige Uncaged, is for the public but also for her family. She says it’s fun for her to share her vacations or the things she does in her life. The editing process takes a couple hours to edit to create a video she likes and wants to upload onto the internet. How to cut things she doesn't want in the video, or if she wants to put words at certain times in the video to or add music. It also depends on how much footage she has to work with. Becoming a youtuber with a vlog channel hasn't changed her life drastically, but Harken aims to post daily and get more subscribers in the future. When Harken goes to college at Drake University in Des Moines this fall she says she’ll be a lot busier with theatre and college life, but she still plans to make a morning and night routine videos. Some things Harken likes to focus on while vlogging, is she likes to aim the camera at on other people instead of always vlogging about what she is doing. She likes to invite other people into the vlog and have a mix of friends and family. Vlogging has had a positive effect on Harken’s life, it keeps her occupied with school and it's a good balance. “It’s like a stress reliever if I have a final or a test and I’m getting frustrated or something I can take a break and edit a video I needs to do or film something.”
TIPS:
Be yourself, don't be fake. Don't try and be someone that your subscribers want you to be, or show the good and bad, not only good. You don't always need a fancy camera to vlog. Your phone works perfectly fine. It gives you a reason to go on adventures and to do different things, and to hang out with friends, and to go on weird adventures with friends too. Don't only have the camera on you, have a variety or a mix of you and friends, so its not only about you because, your friends are part of you life.

Tapping the cover of a book. Open the book and flipping its pages. Manicured nails scratching the paper. For those who experience the effects of Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response or ASMR, feel a shower of tingles starting in their head and running down their neck and spine. For me, rather a feeling of confusion as to why people watch these videos for hours on end. Oddly enough, the term ASMR is nonclinical, and science has yet to explain exactly what it is- it is believed the primary cause of the sensations caused by ASMR are endorphins. These chemicals in the brain are responsible for child-parent bonding, and when these hormones are released into the nervous system they can induce a pain-relieving effect on the body. This would explain why ASMR has been said to cure depression and anxiety in its benefits. Not only can you experience relaxation, but its common effects seem to ease or completely overcome insomnia for some. ASMR can also give listeners just a general calming effect, as well as trigger memories from their past, and they can reminisce on better times in their life. The cause of this sensual experience are ´triggers;´different sounds made into the high-quality microphone of the Youtuber, who refer to themselves as ASMRtists. Using headphones, these microphones pick up on the noise so well it gives the effect you are right there in the same room with them. However, not everyone seems to be watching ASMR videos for their health benefits. More often than not, those who have ASMR Youtube channels are young adult women, and that can bring them unwanted attention. Even though ASMR enthusiasts insist that the bodily response is not sexual, the comments section would suggest otherwise. ASMR also has another acronym- AIHO, which stands for Attention Induced Head Orgasms, and its effects are commonly described as a ¨brain orgasm¨ for the pleasurable relaxation the sensation provides. Despite the doubt, ASMR is still quite popular on Youtube today and acclaimed for its helpfulness in becoming healthy. Similar to many things in our lives these days, ASMR is yet another mainstream trend to take the internet by storm. The ASMR community gets a lot of skepticism from people like me- those who do not experience any sensory response.

I tried listening to varieties of ASMR videos from the popular channel ASMR Darling- and let me tell you, I was uncomfortable. You know how you don’t like it when someone invades your personal space? That’s what it felt like for me, so I did not find it in any way enjoyable to feel like someone was whispering in my ears. The cute, young blond girl on my screen rubbed makeup brushes on the mic- nothing. She then took out a matchbox, did a few taps and scratches, struck some matches, lit a crackling candle, talked about its scent and where she bought itnada. Throughout all of this, she articulated her words very carefully into the mic with a tongue click here, a pop there- still nothing. An hour later of this I had reached the conclusion that ASMR is not the thing for me. Maybe my brain isn’t wired that way- we’re all different. So give it a try, you never know, it might work for you. Happy brain orgasms! WRITTEN AND DESIGNED BY SIDNEY KIERSCH
