“I have always loved taking photos, especially portraits of my friends and family or action shots like at an event. Some of my favorite photos I have ever taken are the shots from a West Liberty show choir competition, Stars on Stage. I enjoyed getting the perfect shot of my mom doing what she loves and the perfect photo of Maggy Owen 22’ falling back into the snow and capturing a genuine smile.”

“ We had never done a trip like this especially as far as Florida... I think that marching in these parades is not like anything we coulf ever do here especially with upwards of 50,000 people in the park. But I think the other part of it is that it’s a lot of students first times traveling without thei parents, and with a large group. So theres also a lot of learning how to pack, how budget money, how to budget time, and how to budget energy throughout the day. So it’s a huge learning experance throughout the whole thing not only the music part of it.” -Rob Medd Band Director

FIVE FEET APART
3 Impactful Books to read over the summer
Design by Alexis Dick
This young adult fiction novel follows will and Stella, two teenagers with cystic fibrosis. The two characters are two very different people. Stella is all about taking her medication, being organized and getting healthy so she can continue her life outside of the hospital. Will, on the other hand, is a take on the typical “bad boy” he doesn’t want to take his medication, he sees no point, he waiting for the day he turns eighteen to get out of all hospitals and live the little life he has left the way he wanted. I really liked this book. One of my favorite things about the novel is the relationships between all of the character. Will and Stella’s relationship isn’t like every young adult novel, it is careful and sad all while being cute and leaving you wanting more.

Madeline, an eighteen year old girl who cannot leave her house due to a rare illness, has a great change in her life when a boy moves in next door. After talking with him and taking a second look at the way she has been living she decides to break free of the boundaries she has lived in and finally get to appreciate what time she has left. I really enjoyed this book, and it is definitely worth a read over the summer. It is heartfelt and touching, and the characters make you fall in love with them through their thoughts and actions. The ending was unexpected, and the only complaint I have is that there won’t be a book two! Alexis Dick
WHAT IF IT’S US
What if itś us is a contemporary romance novel that is set in New York and it’s between these two boys Ben and Arthur. These two boys meet at the post office but then separated. This book is about the two boys finding their way back to each other and go on a series of bad first dates. I really enjoyed this book, some of my favorite things in this novel was the writing style and the adorable romance. I think the two authors did a really good job writing from each of the boys perspectives, it is a really well-balanced novel. I love the romance, it is another fun, fluffy book. The storyline of them losing connection and finding their way back to each other is really a unique and fun way to start off the story. I also really liked how the book shows a lot of diversity and inclusion. Arthur is gay, Jewish, and has ADHD and ben is gay and Puerto Rican.

“Five students in a class of 25 have a mental health issue, and most go untreated” Five students in a class of 25 have a mental health issue, and most go untreated. Mental Health programs are not mandatory at schools, so many mental health issues go untreated because there are not enough people that can treat mental health problems that are available to students. According to NAMI, The National Alliance on Mental Illness, one in five youth between the ages of thirteen and eighteen have a mental health condition. Undiagnosed or untreated mental illness can harm student’s ability to learn and can cause more students with mental illnesses to drop out. Most students who have mental health issues wait until they are adults to treat them, and the average person waits eight to ten years before seeking treatment. According to NPR, The National Public Radio, 80% of those who need mental health services do not receive them. Mental health issues can lead to many issues in school, including chronic absence, low achievement, and disruptive behavior. Schools have the ability to play a role in solving these problems, but most schools do not have many if any, programs in place to help students with mental health issues.
MAY. 28, 2019
Teachers only receive minimal training on how to detect mental illness in undiagnosed students and how to help students with their mental health issues. There are not enough programs to make a difference. According to the ACMH, The Association For Children’s Mental Health, one in ten students have a mental health condition severe enough that it begins to impact their daily lives. Most mental conditions are treatable, but students can’t get help most of the time unless they seek it out. Schools don’t recognize the need for a change of policy regarding mental health. Many students struggle with their mental health issues alone because there are not enough programs in schools to help them. Mental health affects different students in different ways and is harder to see in some people who are affected differently. Just because you can’t tell from looking at someone that they are struggling from a mental health disorder does not mean they don’t have one, they just might be struggling in a non visible way. This can prevent schools from taking action about mental health and can keep people from the accommodations they need.

There are helpful strategies and accommodations that the school can make for students, but that requires decisive action that the schools are often unable or unwilling to make. These changes often require meetings outside of school, but some parents may be unable to get away from work at the right times to meet with the school, or they might be unwilling to come and make the changes. According to the NASP, The National Association of School Psychologists mental health is critical to both students school and home life. Schools are short of almost all helpful services available to students. There are almost no school psychologists, and the counselors are mostly for schedule changes and administrative duties, not for counseling in its traditional sense. The NASP also believes that mental health is not just involving mental illness, people without mental illness can still have bad mental health, and while they might not have a diagnosis they still can have issues. School employed mental health professionals are trained to treat most mental issues, but there are not enough to help all the students.
“Mental health is critical to both students school and home life”
“School mental health services are essential to creating safe schools” Most schools have one person trained, but they are often not known to many students, and unaffected students may not know where to go to get the help they need. School mental health services are essential to creating safe schools, and the lack of services can create an unsafe environment. According to the NASP, emotional learning, mental wellness, resilience, and positive connections between students and adults is necessary to create a school culture in which students feel safe and are willing to discuss safety concerns. According to teenmentalhealth. org, only 4% of the total health care budget is used for mental healthrelated issues. Early and effective treatment is the best way to help struggling students, but that is hard to do without funding and resources for this issue. Most of these issues go unrecognized by politics, which makes it even harder to get legislation passed to help with the issues schools are having. Candidates for office do not usually mention a stance on this topic, and although it is one of the biggest issues schools are facing, not much is being done to address the issue.

I AM A FEMINIST BECAUSE... Art, Design, and Article by Kiley Butcher
I grew up around people who roll their eyes whenever someone went on a “feminist rant,” and I would roll my eyes along with them because I didn’t want people to think of me the same way they thought of them. But now I don’t see them as “feminist rants” anymore; instead, I see them as speaking the truth. Now, whenever someone talks about the reproductive rights a woman deserves or how women and men should be paid the same amount, I don’t roll my eyes, I nod my head and go along with it, I talk about the inequalities that women experience. I have watched people roll their eyes and continue to look at their phone while someone talks about issues women face today. I walk in the halls and hear words like slut and whore, and I have held myself back from telling them that a “slut” or a “whore” is just a woman expressing her sexuality and wearing the clothes she wants and should not be a way to demean women about how they live their life. I hear boys in the cafeteria tell rape jokes and laugh like women and men aren’t raped every day. But I would be seen as a loud-mouthed, man-hating, feminist. That was the past. I now see how important it is to be strong and to speak out against what women go through everyday in America. I am A feminist because women who have a lot of sex are “sluts” while guys are “studs” and applauded, I am A feminist because one in four young women is assaulted and the world still asks “what was she wearing?” or “ Was she drunk? Clearly, she was asking for it” I am A feminist because boobs are used to sell everything from booze to soap but don’t you dare breastfeed in public. I am A feminist because of the pressure girls are put under to value their appearance above everything else I am A feminist because the pay gap is real and men and women are doing the same jobs but women make only $0.79 for every dollar men make in 2019. I am A feminist because Because when I was younger and I took on a leadership role I was being “bossy.” I am A feminist because still, people believe that a woman deserves to be raped if she dresses in revealing clothes, I am A feminist because I have been conditioned into not crying because I will be seen as a weak girl that is probably just on her period and is emotional. I am A feminist because most of all I believe each gender should be equal. Is that too much to ask? Everyone should be a feminist because women’s rights are human rights. I’m proud to say that I am indeed a feminist.

ARE NEW LIVE ACTION MOVIES RUINING OLD ANIMATED CLASSICS? As new trailer after new trailer comes out there is one question on everyone’s minds: Will these new live action movies live up to the original animated films? My belief is that these new movies have the potential to hold up to our expectations. These new films may offer a new perspective on the way we look at our old favorites. These new films are not carbon copies of the old, as new direction can lead the movies to new unexplored areas of their universes. Some of these changes may not land with the audience, but many more will, and the directors of these new movies have to take risks and change some things or they would stick too closely to the originals and never measure up. The new live action remake of Dumbo was not received very well, with critics calling it bland and saying that it does not follow the original narrative close enough, but also some critics say it is unoriginal. It seems that there was no winning way to go, as it was critiqued both for taking too many risks, and for not taking enough. The new live action version of Aladdin is also receiving criticism even before it is released, based on the trailer. The attempts this movie is making to remake this movie in a new way are already failing with the audience’s initial viewpoint. Many are criticizing the decision to have Will Smith voice the Genie, as well as attempts to switch up how the voices of both Aladdin and Jasmine sound. Many people do not like the direction it looks like the film is going. Another live action remake that is coming out soon is The Lion King. The trailer for this new remake was shot for shot the exact same as the trailer for the original animated version of the movie, which got a mixed reaction from Disney fans. Some liked this idea, as it payed tribute to the original movie, while also showing the new way the movie is going to be presented, but others did not like the way the trailer was presented, saying that the movie may stick to close to the original film. I believe that some change is necessary with these new films, but that they should say true to some of the original story. I think these films may not be overall received as well as new original movies, but I think they still have the potential to be great if they are made well and presented Art, article, and design by Alexis Dick carefully.

NOTRE DAME CATHEDRAL:
AFTER THE FIRE After the fire at the Notre Dame cathedral on April 15, 2019, many wonder what will happen in the wake of this momentous event. There are plans to rebuild, but many wonder if the money would be more beneficial to use the money to fund other causes. The fire, which was said to be caused by an electrical malfunction, swept through all the wood parts of the cathedral, and didn’t leave much of the inside of the cathedral standing. The building was mostly made of non-flammable materials, but much repair is still needed, because most of the structure was made up of flammable materials. Already there are plans to rebuild the cathedral, and there has been one billion dollars pledged for the work, all donated to the cause. The prime minister of France has
vowed that the rebuilding will be done in five years, in time for the 2024 Olympic Games, which are going to be held in Paris. There are debates about whether the rebuilding of the cathedral should stay true to the original design, or if more changes should be made to change the cathedral during the rebuilding process. There has been discussion about using this rebuild as a chance to make the building more eco friendly, as well as fixing some design flaws from the original building. There has been a design competition for the blueprint of the rebuilding, and many people have posted what they think the cathedral should be rebuilt to on Instagram. Even major architect firms have submitted more professional designs.
Some people believe that this should not be taken seriously, as some people are just presenting options as an attempt to become famous, so are gearing their designs towards more modern things that will not hold up to time in a hundred years. Whatever design that is chosen will have both negative and positive responses, as there is a very divided view by most people. The last time anyone remodeled the cathedral was in the 1820s, after a long period of neglect and destruction. Most of the additions, like the famous gargoyles that perished in the fire, were extremely controversial at the time, and it is likely that whatever is added on now will also be very controversial.
