A declaration that made history‌
A story that is not a fairy tale‌..
What happened on July 20th of 1810?
In 1810, our country was not yet called Colombia, It was called “La Nueva Granada”, and was not governed by a president, it was ruled by a Spanish Viceroy… I am Don Amar y Borbón, I represent the King Fernando the seventh and because I am from Spain, they called me Chapetón…
What a curious Nickname!!! The Spaniards were called Chapetones, but there also were Indians, half Indians (Mestizos), Blacks (Negros), Half Blacks (Mulatos) and Criollos that were sons of the Spaniards that were born on La Nueva Granada. Many of them were not very happy to be mostly governed by Spaniards. At the same time, Spain was being invaded by France in command of Napoleon Bonaparte… Viceroy, Even though we do not want to be independent yet…. We want to be heard and participate more in the government!!!
Bla Bla Bla I’m not listening, I’m not listening and I’m not listening!!!!!
“So the viceroy is not listening to what we want!” Those were the thoughts of the Criollos, so they began to design a plan in their heads…. That is the idea Sabio I And Caldas!!!! You will agree Mr José he will pretend to defend him So Acevedo!!! We will vulgarly refuse to make the deception hear me ask to the chapetón more convincing. well!!! This is the Mr. LLorente to lend us a Ha While we will yell the plan!!! We must do ha ha and that Flower vase Chapetón to make a great battle!!! Spaniard is so furious that
that more and more he is capable of breaking people will come and the flower vase on our make a huge riot... heads!
The Flower vase of Llorente would be ask for a great dinner were Don Antonio Villavicencio will be invited , he was a sender of the Spanish government, but native (criollo) of birth and heart.
Brother Antonio... today is 20th of July...
Yes Francisco is Friday, market day! The plan is running great!!! The square is crowded!!! Let´s go, let´s go!!!
Well well look who we have here, the Morales brothers and their “little criollos” friends, You already know that you guys are not welcome in this distinguished place.
Ha ha ha just what we needed a native traitor!!!, speaking of Villavicencio so kind…. That
Look Chapetón… we is heavy and just want that you would rude!!! How do you lend us that flower vase to a dare to speak like that to dinner which we invite Don a distinguished Spanish Antonio Villavicencio!!! like Mr Llorente?
… Llorente, insulting and being rude replied them: I do not lend anything to the criollos!!!! Then a big fight were started, big words came and went from both sides, between the crowd’s pushing, the flower vase of Llorente broke and just the base of it were saved……….
Then, the Santa Fé habitants revealed against the arrogance, the indifference and the bad treatments of the Spanish government. They heavily asked to be listened… and that was like everything started. In that moment, Don Jose Acevedo y Gomez yelled the following Independence statement: “People of Santa Fé: If you lose these moments of effervescence an heat, if you miss this unique and happy occasion!...
before twelve hours you will be treated like insurgents!! look the dungeons, the chains and yells that are waiting for you!!”

The importance of that 20th of July of 1810 was not the insults, neither the Flower vase of the selfish Mr Llorente… It was the people´s union, the union of the Colombians of that moment, which started our freedom. A dream of many of us!!!!
