June 2015

Welcome Welcome to the new Library Newsletter. It’s been a while since our last one and a lot has happened since then. The Central Library in Greenock has moved to its new home in Wallace Place – though some of our members may (just!) remember that this building used to be the library many moons ago. We intend to publish a newsletter four times a year and if you have any suggestions please get in touch using the contact information at the end of the newsletter.

News The newly refurbished Central Library at Wallace Place opened its doors to the public on Thursday 29th of January 2015. The new library has been fitted out to a very high standard with bright new furniture and fittings, reading cocoons, designated reading and study spaces, self-booking PC slots and iPad kiosks for searching the library catalogue and managing your account. The library also features a bespoke new children’s area with pre-loaded iPads, colourful furniture and special reading spaces.

As well as this, the new library has given us the chance to maintain and build on our existing services with improved Wi-Fi, free PC access, comprehensive book, audio, CD and DVD stock for loan, adult learning opportunities, hot drinks machine and our ever popular Bookbug sessions on a Tuesday and Saturday. With improved free public parking (30 minutes outside or 3 hours at the Bull Ring carpark) and a main bus route close by, there’s no excuse for not paying us a visit if you haven’t already – we look forward to seeing you soon!

Inverclyde Libraries celebrate National Libraries Day There was a lot of love shown for libraries on Saturday 8th February – we celebrated National Libraries Day with a whole host of events, including an attempt at the World’s Longest Bookbug Session! 75 children and 80 adults dropped in on this Bookbug session at Port Glasgow Library, which lasted a whopping three hours. Our iPad and tablet drop-ins at Inverkip & Wemyss Bay, Port Glasgow, Kilmacolm and Gourock were all busy with people wanting to learn how to use these hand-held devices. Our brand new Central Library in Greenock also hosted a tablet drop in – the perfect opportunity to welcome everyone to the new library! Family history enthusiasts were welcomed at the Watt Library, and shown how to get started on researching their family tree. Lots of interesting stories were shared on the day. Thanks to everyone who came along! Inverclyde Libraries regularly run Bookbug sessions, as well as computing & tablet classes for adults – visit www.inverclyde.gov.uk/libraries or phone 01475 712 330 to find out more.

Bookbug’s Library Challenge Over 500 children recently took part in Bookbug’s Library Challenge and collected beautifully illustrated certificates along the way. Our Super Readers were invited to a party in the Greenock Town Hall held during Bookbug Week and received a goodie bag and certificate in recognition of their achievement as an Inverclyde Super Reader. The children who collected the most certificates at each branch were named the Branch Super Reader and won a portrait session at George Young Photographers plus a print.
