More than 50 regional and national companies have chosen Nottingham as their headquarters. Major employers include Capital One, Alliance Boots, Experian, Nottingham City Council and HRMC. These companies make up a large percentage of Nottingham’s 770,000 strong accessible workforce. Nottingham also recently welcomed Specsavers’ UK operations centre to ng2 Business Park creating 300 jobs. The £643,544 per annum deal is the biggest business property deal in Nottingham since 2006. ng2 Business Park was also the preferred location for Halifax Bank of Scotland (HBOS) who opened their multi million pound customer service

centre there. This site will benefit from the extension of the NET tram system in the next few years. Nottingham Business Park was the chosen location for David Wilson Homes, DVLA and the Highways Agency. The city’s location with excellent motorway and rail links means it is especially attractive as a distribution centre. Sir Paul Smith recently opened a 110,000 sq ft packing and distribution warehouse which employs 325 people in the City. The progression of Nottingham as a major UK and European business destination does not stop with these

Alliance Boots broke its British record for the seventh successive Christmas last year in Nottingham, despite tough high street conditions.

Nottingham is the fourth busiest shopping city in the UK, outside of London with more than 25 million shoppers coming into the City each year and has an annual retail spend of over £1.4 billion. It is a natural location for any retailer wishing to have a high profile presence in one of the UK’s most successful regional city centres

Nottingham is continuing to grow as a cultural centre. The City is bidding to become World Design Capital in 2012. The accolade would see Nottingham mentioned in the same breath as the Italian city Turin, current holder of the title, and South Korean capital Seoul, due to be the next holder of the crown.

The City is home to many creative industry centres such as Lakeside Arts Centre, The New Art Exchange and the exciting new Nottingham Contemporary, one of the largest contemporary art galleries in England opening in 2009. Nottingham is also the home town of world renowned designer Sir Paul Smith, who has his flagship store in the city as well as lending his name to the Sir Paul Smith Auditorium in the Broadway Media Centre, which provides an important platform for creative businesses to grow.

Nottingham received ÂŁ12.2m of funding in 2008 for art and culture from Arts Council England. Nottingham is proud to have hosted the international, interactive Gamecity videogame festival for the third year running.

A £21m Bio-fund was established through Nottingham City Council and BioCity in 2009. Loans will be issued out to fledgling bioscience companies locating into the city.

Nottingham is fast becoming known as a city of science and creativity following its designation as a Science City in 2005.

A £29m Innovation Park at the University of Nottingham was launched in Autumn 2008 - aimed at high-tech innovative companies that have a synergy with the University’s research.

A new MediPark to house more than 200 medical research firms will soon emerge next to the Queen’s Medical Centre, one of the country’s leading teaching hospitals.

BioCity, one of Europe’s largest incubator centres, recently celebrated the opening of a £5m expansion. There is a further £10m expansion plan in the pipeline on a 36 acre site forming a ‘BioQuarter‘ accommodating 400 people as part of the £900m Eastside regeneration.

Nottingham’s two world class universities are at the forefront of Nottingham’s science base. Both have a record of outstanding scientific achievement including developing the MRI scanner, the invention of Nurofen and world renowned research in cancer diagnoses.

The city is home to public sector bodies such as Government Office for the East Midlands, East Midlands Development Agency and Ofsted. HM Revenue & Customs has its national headquarters based here, employing around 2,000 people following its relocation in 1997. This strong cluster comprises public administration, health and education and complements the evolving science and financial and business sectors in the City. One of Nottingham's key offers to public sector organisations is its direct connections to London every 30 minutes and immediate access to over three million people living within a three-hour drive of the city. Nottingham has a wide range of high quality state and private schools and is home to two world class universities, The University of Nottingham and Nottingham Trent University, with over 60,000 students. The University is consistently ranked in the top five UK universities for the value of industrial awards, hosting three research centres, two with Rolls Royce and one with GE Aviation. Its main academic strengths are Languages, Biosciences, Law and Psychology which creates a wide range of graduate specialities within the Nottingham workforce. Nottingham Trent University is also seen as one of the UK’s leading universities in terms of graduate employability, with almost 98% of students graduating in 2005 employed or engaged in further education within six months.

Nottingham Trent University has invested heavily in an ambitious £130m refurbishment programme which will transform three new campuses The University specialises in Law, Social Sciences and Art & Design. With leading research centres in Biomedical Science, Chemistry, Physics and Sports Science, the University has a flourishing research culture with funding from sources as diverse as US Department for Homeland Security to the Anthony Nolan Trust. The University’s John Van Geest Cancer Research Centre, specialising in cancer detection, will cement its reputation within the cancer research field, with the help of a £7.65m donation.

Nottingham’s gastronomic delights are varied and plentiful. The city was named Britain’s culinary capital with more cafés, restaurants and bars per square mile than any other city in the UK. Centre Urban Design Guide. This demonstrates a series of design rules to guide development, to create a livelier, competitive and civilised city centre with access for all. As the UK’s largest regeneration developer, Westfield will deliver far more than just retail for Nottingham.

Broadmarsh represents one of the largest retail projects in the UK and the redevelopment of The Broadmarsh Centre will create a brand-new city quarter in Nottingham.
