LETTER FROM

H

arvest season is upon us, and while most of us probably think of fall as the time to gather things before the colder months set in, this month we’re featuring a family who harvests creative handmade items every day. Tim and Natalie Hamm share a love of creativity, and together they have created a business focused on making swing beds and baby swings from repurposed and reclaimed wood. They enjoy working together and raising their four children in the house they designed and are building themselves. Natalie said that it’s important for them to create new things as a family. While the Hamms are living a handcrafted life, Sam and Robin Peeples are harvesting a holistic and sustainable farming culture just 5 miles outside of Oxford. Sam, a native of Jackson, Miss., took an unconventional route to becoming a farmer, first venturing to Montana, where he learned about the hard yet meaningful work. It was there he met his wife, Robin, and 10 years later they made another unconventional move – to Oxford. Today, the Peeples farm about 70 of their longtime family farm’s 800 acres. Finally, Yokna Bottoms Farm is harvesting its large carrot crop this month. Carrots seemed perfectly appropriate for this time of year, as they grow in bright autumn colors, from red and orange to yellow, purple and white. Find a recipe for a great carrot side dish to add to your Thanksgiving table on page 23. Happy harvest season from all of us here at Invitation Oxford.

SINCE 1993, OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD,

a Samaritan’s Purse project, has collected and delivered more than 124 million gift-filled shoeboxes to children in more than 150 countries. National collection week is Nov. 16-23. In Oxford, drop off shoeboxes at the Wesley Foundation or First Baptist Church. HOW IT WORKS 1. Find a shoebox. Start with an average-size

cardboard or plastic shoebox. If you want to wrap it, cover the box and lid separately. 2. Girl or boy? Decide whether you will pack a box for a girl or a boy, and the age category: 2-4, 5-9 or 10-14. 3. Fill with gifts. Select one “wow” toy such as a doll, soccer ball with pump, or stuffed animal. Then add other small toys, hygiene items and school supplies. 4. Track your package. Donate $7 online and receive a tracking label to follow your box and discover the destination of your shoebox gift. 5. Drop it off. Take your shoebox gift to the Wesley Foundation or First Baptist Church Nov. 16-23. Contact Oxford Area Coordinator Beth McCullen at ehmccullen@hotmail.com or Mae Stone at operationchristmaschild@yahoo .com, or visit samaritanspurse.org for more information on how to participate or volunteer.

ust because it’s November doesn’t mean the days of farm-fresh vegetables are over. The Oxford City Market runs through Nov. 24, and it’s full of fall produce, including an abundant crop of Yokna Bottoms Farm carrots. “Most gardeners are used to summer gardening, so they’re not used to our great fall crops,” Yokna Bottoms owner Doug Davis said. “Our carrot crop is looking really nice.” He said the farm grows a rainbow of colorful carrots, including white and yellow, as well as orange Danvers, cosmic purple and atomic red. “They do have slight differences in taste. It’s hard to describe,” Davis said. “They have different nutritional values.” Davis said the Mississippi climate is special because there are two bountiful growing seasons. The Yokna Bottoms carrots were planted in August and were hardy enough to withstand the summer heat. He estimated that about 15,000 carrots were planted. “They’re a lot of work so everyone is happy when they’re harvested,” Davis said. “They take a lot of time to thin and quite a bit of time to wash.” That’s why, when it comes to eating them, Davis prefers to keep it simple. “I just like to take carrots and other assorted vegetables like beets, turnips, potatoes, garlic and onions and just throw them in a deep-dish pot and bake them,” he said.

Honey-Roasted Carrots With Fennel Root This simple yet elegant recipe is great for a fall brunch or Thanksgiving side dish. Look for a variety of colors of locally grown carrots at the Oxford City Market. Clean and peel carrots, and slice fennel bulb thinly. Toss carrots and fennel with a little melted Brown’s Dairy butter and Mardis honey. Sprinkle with sea salt and coarsely ground pepper. Spread in a roasting pan, and bake for about 20-25 minutes at 375° or until vegetables are tender and caramelized. Garnish with fresh parsley. Alternative preparation: Place roasted carrots and fennel in a food processor or blender, and puree. Then add chicken or veggie stock, and simmer a minute on the stove. Adjust seasonings, and garnish with fresh cream. Recipe courtesy of Oxford City Market Director Betsy Chapman. November 2015 | INVITATION OXFORD

GINA MARIE SEXTON ina Marie Sexton and John Daniel Davis first met in high school. They reconnected through Facebook and within a few months were engaged. Recognizing Gina’s love of antiques, John Daniel searched until he found a beautiful antique engagement ring. A lakeside wedding was planned for May at Gina’s parents’ home in Oxford. In the interim, J.D. accepted a job in Mobile, Ala. This and other factors necessitated rescheduling the date and location. Shortly after the engagement, Gina and J.D. attended a friend’s wedding in Memphis. Everything about bride Joy’s dress was perfection. Joy shared with Gina that Barbara Van Houten made the dress. Having grown up wearing many dresses made by her grandmother, mother and aunt Kay, Gina was convinced that a custom dress was for her. Even though Barbara had a tight schedule and a planned move to Florida, she agreed to make Gina’s dress. Thus began a lace odyssey through the Internet and telephone, executed by plane, car, truck and even a dogsled traveling through Canada snow. The design of the dress was dictated by Gina’s decision that all of the lace would be antique. This meant that there would not be yards and yards of a single lace available or even lace created by one technique. The reality of the broad range of lace styles that have evolved from European cottage industry became apparent and a little overwhelming to Gina as she began her search. Some of the lace in her dress is more than 200 years old. The search required nearly a year. The varied age and origin of the many lace pieces resulted in the need to dye incrementally, using vegetable dyes to lighten or darken the laces to visually blend with one another. The dress was a culmination of discovery, new friendships, the execution of Gina’s personal design and Van Houten’s patience and beautiful craftsmanship. The flower girl’s dress was made by Gina’s aunt Kay Wilson. The bridesmaids’ dresses were made by a seamstress that Gina located on Etsy. The custom veil failed to arrive, so Gina’s mother made a veil three hours prior to the ceremony using remnants of antique lace not used in the dress. Gina and her future mother-in-law, Jennifer Davis, prepared some of the desserts and candy. Star-shaped porcelain table favors were made by the bride’s mother, Mary Sexton, and many of the crochet tablecloths were made by Jennifer. Another personal touch was the pink Depression glass and milk glass vases supplied to the florist by the bride and Jennifer. The wedding took place at sunset on Orange Beach under a floral covered arbor. Following the ceremony, a seafood dinner was served on an open porch overlooking the harbor. Music was provided by friends of the groom. Everything was perfect, with touches of vintage and antique detail, all planned by the bride. Mr. and Mrs. John Daniel Davis now reside in Florence, Ala.

Husband-and-wife team Sam and Robin Peeples run a holistic grass-, solar- and microbial-based livestock farm that offers eggs, poultry, lamb and more. WRITTEN BY Lena Anderson | PHOTOGRAPHED BY Joe Worthem

When Sam Peeples left Jackson, Miss., in 2004, it was to study media arts and film production at the University of Montana. He never imagined he’d return to his home state 10 years later with a wife and a new dream: to become a farmer. “I was always interested in sustainable farming but didn’t see it in the cards,” Peeples said. “It wasn’t until I got out west and saw

54

INVITATION OXFORD | November 2015

people doing it that I realized it was feasible.” He befriended a small group of farmers while living in Montana. When he wasn’t studying, he spent his free time working on their land, where he learned how to care for and process livestock in an environmentally friendly way. The work appealed to him for multiple reasons. “It’s a way to control your own destiny and

Sam (left) and Robin Peeples collect up to 130 eggs daily from their free-range laying hens. The Peeples Farm sells its eggs, along with poultry and lamb, to several local businesses.

take it out of the hands of large corporations,” Sam said. “It makes communities richer with a thriving local culture and creates more entrepreneurial opportunities and a stronger middle class. The impacts are enormous.” That passion is what drove him to suggest to his wife, Robin, that they move 2,000 miles from her hometown of Boise, Idaho, to start a farm on his family land in Mississippi. Robin, who studied biology at the University of Montana, was on board for an adventure, and so in 2013, they moved across the country and created the Peeples Farm. Today the couple farms about 70 of the 800 acres that belong to Sam’s grandparents, Mildred Murray Hopkins and the late Dr. Gerre Hopkins. The land sits about 5 miles south of Oxford, and on it they raise laying hens, poultry chickens and sheep. They are devoted to ecofriendly practices that help create a sustainable system. They collect anywhere from 85 to 130 fresh farm eggs daily from their laying hens. They rotate their meat chickens twice daily and their sheep weekly to different paddocks throughout the pasture by using portable solar-powered fencing to keep the animals together. Regularly moving them around the field ensures the herd always has fresh grass to eat, protects them from parasites, allows them to naturally fertilize soil with their manure, and prevents them from overusing or destroying a specific area. Rescue donkeys serve as guardians to the sheep

In addition to running the farm on their own, Sam works as a bartender at Lamar Lounge, and Robin is a nursing student at the University of Mississippi.

and help keep the herd safe from predators. Every part of caring for their animals is natural. They worm their sheep with a homemade kelp meal mixture of garlic juice, molasses and salt, which works as a natural protectant against parasites. The sheep are fed grass, shrubs and legumes, which make the meat leaner and more delicate. While the lamb is processed at a facility near Memphis for health code purposes, Sam and Robin process chickens directly on the farm. While not glamorous, it draws interest and allows their customers to understand and see exactly where their meat comes from. “We’ll send a mass text telling everyone what day we’re processing, and people get so excited to help out,” Robin said. “So many people are really interested in learning more about what we do. When you’re starting out, the scary part is how are you going to sell your product, where is it going to go? But we haven’t had a problem with that. We’ve had a ton of support.” That support is becoming even broader. Several area businesses are now loyal customers, sourcing their eggs and meat from the Peeples Farm. They include the Farmers’ Market store, Oxford Canteen, Living Foods, the Neon Pig in Oxford and Tupelo, and Sweet Magnolia ice cream in Clarksdale, Miss. Although there has been a learning curve and some challenges, business is expanding, and the couple are looking toward the future. They hope to slowly expand their farm. Sam would like to eventually increase the number of chickens and sheep, and he wants to bring in pigs and turkeys, and possibly rabbits and cattle. The goal is more than financial. Sam said he is most committed to protecting the environment and bettering his customers’ health. “[The animals] all work together holistically. Every animal is different and has different impacts on the land, so the more species, the better. It means healthier grass, healthier soil,

healthier micropopulation,” he said. “Just like produce, it’s good to use them in a cyclical fashion so year-round you’re providing different types of food, which means people are eating seasonally and healthier.” Their passion for health, sustainability and sharing their food beliefs with friends and

neighbors keeps Sam and Robin out in the pasture every day with their flock. “I love spending my mornings and weekends outside on the farm,” Robin said. “And it’s so rewarding to eat your own food and see how we’re improving the land. We’re making a difference, and it’s really cool.”

Rivals WITH A Cause

The University of Mississippi/Mississippi State University rivalry can bring out the worst in fans, but two new traditions, the Nov. 16 Unified Egg Bowl and Nov. 23 Egg Bowl Run, are instead channeling that energy into supporting charitable causes.

Rebel and Bully cheer on University of Mississippi and Mississippi State University Army ROTC cadets during the 2014 Egg Bowl Run. This year’s 100-mile run is Nov. 23. Ole Miss cadets will leave from Vaught-Hemingway Stadium at 5 a.m. and run relays to Calhoun City, arriving around noon to hand off the game ball to MSU cadets, who will finish the run to Starkville.

fall of 2014 was an important football season in Mississippi. ESPN’s College GameDay broadcast from the University of Mississippi and Mississippi State University on back-to-back weekends, and the schools were featured on the covers of Sports Illustrated and ESPN The Magazine. In addition, flag football became an official Special Olympics sport. Those events gave the organizers of Special Olympics Mississippi an idea.

“With all the success both Ole Miss and MSU had in football last year, there was a spotlight on Mississippi,” said Jim Beaugez, Special Olympics Mississippi director of communications. “We wanted to present a state that is unified even on one of its most divided occasions, all in the spirit of supporting Special Olympics athletes and our mission.” That sparked what became the inaugural Unified Egg Bowl, held last November at the

Mississippi State intramural athletic fields. Special Olympians played flag football alongside traditional college students from Ole Miss and Mississippi State, fostering interaction, inclusion and understanding about intellectual disabilities. “Unified sports partner our athletes with volunteer athletes – in this case with students from MSU and Ole Miss – to give ours a chance to achieve their potential and develop November 2015 | INVITATION OXFORD

The first Special Olympics Mississippi Unified Egg Bowl flag football game was held Nov. 19, 2014, at the Mississippi State campus intramural athletic fields. Special Olympics athletes played on teams alongside traditional college students from Ole Miss and MSU. The event was a success, and this year’s game will be held in Oxford on Nov. 16.

skills a lot of people take for granted,” Beaugez said. “The Egg Bowl is one day a year where houses are divided and team is everything in Mississippi. What better occasion to unify them for something bigger?” Competition between the schools began long before the game. Fans, students and alumni participated in the fundraising challenge for the Unified Egg Bowl, ultimately totaling $12,465 for Special Olympics. MSU nabbed a three-point advantage in the game by raising $6,250 versus Ole Miss’ $6,215, but it was Ole Miss that won the matchup last year with a 23-17 score. The Ole Miss win was motivation for players like Jason Smith, 33, of Brandon, Miss. Smith, who lost his arm and suffered a brain injury in a tornado in 1986. Smith has been a die-hard Mississippi State fan for decades. “He’s such a big fan that the people he works with raised money to buy him a golf cart that’s maroon and white for his last birthday,” said Smith’s aunt Chyrel Wallace. “He was

64

INVITATION OXFORD | November 2015

already excited about playing the game at MSU before he ever got to meet and take a picture with Dan Mullen.” That photo now hangs on Smith’s wall, a reminder of the touchdown pass he caught during the game. “I heard about it for months after. When Ole Miss won, he just said, ‘We’ll get them next year,’ ” Wallace said. “He’s been ready for practices to start again since summer.” Coach Hugh Freeze was on hand, too. Ole Miss players Ryan Buchanan and Evan Engram led practices. Freeze invited the Special Olympics team to attend a practice with the Rebels, where the unified players met some of their heroes and took home jerseys and footballs as souvenirs. Ole Miss even provided the unified team with professional equipment for the big game. “It was an awesome thing to see how willing the athletic department was to reach out and do what they could to make this an amazing experience for these players,” said Drew Coker, the 2014 Ole Miss team captain.

Coker graduated with a degree in history in May, but that doesn’t mean he won’t be back to campus this fall. He’s kept up with some of the unified players on his team via Facebook since they won last season. The goal is to up the ante this year when the game is played in Oxford, possibly by holding the game at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium and getting the cheerleaders involved. “I didn’t know what to expect last year, but this was one of the best things I’ve ever been a part of,” Coker said. “It just put things in perspective for me to be on a team with these guys who struggle through so much and brought such good energy the whole time. I can’t wait to help again this year and defend that title.” As for the Special Olympics, last year’s venture was such a success that they’ve extended the idea nationwide. The 2015-16 season will see numerous events pitting state rivals against each other in charitable games of flag football. So far, big schools in Michigan, Iowa, Alabama and Texas are all on board.

“It’s an honor to see our model go to another level,” Beaugez said. “It’s validation that good things are happening here, and a healthy rivalry can be good when you use it right.” While Special Olympians train for their football game, Ole Miss and MSU Army Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) cadets are training for the 100-mile relay Egg Bowl Run from Oxford to Starkville. They will carry with them the Egg Bowl game ball, signed by coaches Freeze and Mullen. This Nov. 23 is the third annual run, which raises money for a different charity each fall. The ball is handed off at the midpoint. “I started this run because I wanted to do something special between the schools,” MSG Matt Hayes said. “I wanted to bring the community together. That’s why I chose Calhoun City as our meet-up point. It’s pretty evenly split on State and Ole Miss fans.” “I’d heard people talk it up from the year before, but the level of support when we got to the midpoint was overwhelming,” said 2nd Lt. Zack Martella, who ran last year. “You put team colors away, and it’s all about the camouflage we have in common. There’s a sense of unity there, which is a new thing when it comes to Ole Miss versus MSU at the Egg Bowl.” There is no additional training. Cadets depend on the running that’s already part of their weekly physical training to prepare for Army service after college. Each cadet runs about 2 or 3 miles of the journey. “It gives all the cadets a sense of accomplishment to be able to see this through from start to finish,” MSU ROTC Operation Officer Michael Hunter said. “Everything in ROTC is so competitive with PT scores and GPAs. This is something they join up to make happen from both sides.” After the Egg Bowl, the home team raises money by either auctioning the ball off or donating it to a charity to auction. The Wounded Warrior Project was last year’s recipient. “When we work together to complete a mission like this it makes us realize what we’re capable of as a team,” Martella said. “But when you throw in being able to help a cause so close to home for us all, it just makes that run even more memorable. It really opens your eyes to what a joint operation can accomplish.” Follow @UMEggBowl on Twitter for updates.

Natalie and Tim Hamm have built a growing business creating custom baby swings and swing beds, and they recently embarked on their biggest project yet: designing and building a farmhouse for their family of six. WRITTEN BY Lanie Anderson PHOTOGRAPHED BY Joe Worthem

Natalie and Tim Hamm already had one child when Tim started college at the University of Mississippi in 2005. Although Tim had a steady income with his job at Pak Mail, the teenage newlyweds wanted more family time than Tim’s 50-hour workweek allowed. Tim and Natalie had ventured into building furniture, and in 2007, they started HammMade Furniture to allow for more family time and still pay the bills while Tim pursued an engineering degree. Today, HammMade Furniture is their full-time family business with a booth in Sugar Magnolia Antique Mall and a thriving online

store. The couple specialize in custom daybeds and baby swings, refinished and repurposed furniture, and other home décor. The Hamms have also grown to a family of six and recently designed and built their own farmhouse in Denmark, Miss., near Oxford. Tim wasn’t always handy. He and Natalie credit their former landlord and friend Bill MacKenzie for teaching Tim how to salvage wood and build furniture. For 10 years, the Hamms lived in a small cottage on MacKenzie’s property, and he allowed Tim and Natalie to use his shop and tools for making HammMade Furniture pieces.

The Hamms’ custom farmhouse in Denmark, Miss., is still a work in progress. Natalie designed the house and Tim is doing much of the construction work himself, from trim and flooring to cabinets and more. Many of the walls are made with reclaimed wood that Tim salvaged from a house built in the 1800s.

“There’s something special about being in a shop,” Tim said. “Mr. Bill is cool because he is a salvager. He doesn’t throw anything away. I could just go in [his shop], pick out what I wanted and try to make something.” As their family grew, the Hamms started building their own home last November and moved out of the cottage in July. HammMade Furniture has also grown, and Tim and Natalie have more specific roles than when they started the business. Tim primarily handles the online store and builds furniture, and he salvages and reclaims wood and other materials to build HammMade Furniture pieces or to use in their own home. “One of my favorite things about building furniture is actually salvaging the wood,” Tim said. “I like to tear down old buildings. For example, someone called me to tear down an old church one time, and I told her I would love to do that.” Natalie, an artist with a keen eye for design and architecture, designs and refinishes furniture for the business and maintains the booth at Sugar Magnolia. The booth also has

Natalie designed the entire home around the front entry. It was important to her that it had an old-house feel the minute anyone walked in. To achieve that, she chose repurposed transoms, shiplap siding and antique doors. The chandelier is from Oxford’s Unique Furnishings. Opposite page, a mix of galvanized and upholstered chairs surround the dining room table. Natalie bought the washed-wood chandelier at an architectural salvage store. a collection of her original paintings. She said the whole family is involved in HammMade Furniture, which is her favorite part of the business. “When we go to look for things on the weekends, we go as a family, and our boys are really involved in that,” Natalie said. “When I’m painting something, our daughter will stand beside me and paint something, too. As a mom, I think it’s awesome to be able to work

and have the family involved at the same time.” The most rewarding part of the business for Tim is when customers get a piece from HammMade Furniture and let him know how much they love it. “Customers will call us or send us pictures once a piece is in their home,” Tim said. “It’s nice to build something and then get see it in someone’s home. I don’t know if there are many jobs like that.”

Tim and Natalie also enjoy sharing with their customers the stories behind the pieces, since a lot of them are purchased at antiques markets or are made with reclaimed materials from old homes. Their fascination with old homes and architecture is one reason why they decided to design and build their own house rather than purchase one. When the Hamms realized they could re-create an old farmhouse for them-

selves, Natalie designed the home and Tim figured out the dimensions. “Natalie knew what she wanted,” Tim said. “It was pretty specific. I didn’t know how to tell somebody else what we wanted, so we tried to draw it ourselves. We actually built the house off of Google SketchUp.” Friends helped Tim and Natalie with the plumbing, electricity and framing. Then they did everything on the inside of the home from

trim and flooring to cabinets and decoration. Many of the walls are made with reclaimed wood from a house built in the 1800s. A lot of the home’s furniture and décor also have stories similar to the pieces in their booth. “We’re drawn to primitive stuff,” Tim said. “If you walk around the house, I can tell you where most of the pieces or the wood came from. It’s just kind of fun, and that’s what we like.”

The living room is full of many DIY projects, including an armchair (far left) that Natalie chose to paint and sand instead of reupholster. The logs stacked in the fireplace give the room a cozy feel. They were cut from a tree that fell on the property.

“When we go to look for things on the weekends, we go as a family. When I’m painting something, our daughter will stand beside me and paint something, too. As a mom, I think it’s awesome to be able to work and have the family involved at the same time.” – Natalie Hamm

Their home, on the outskirts of Oxford, is built on 72 acres where their children love to play outside. The Hamms also have chickens, a pig and a dog. They say they have big plans for farming in the future. “We knew we didn’t want to be in town because our boys are so outdoorsy, and we just love the country,” Natalie said. “We always talk about living 100 years ago and how people lived back then. I think we’re fascinated by that lifestyle so having that old-timey feel is what we both love.” Since they were teenagers, Tim and Natalie have dreamed of building their own home, and they are amazed every day that their dream has become a reality. “When we started out, we had this small

plan, but we didn’t know how we would get from step to step,” Natalie said. “Seeing everything unfold definitely has been rewarding. We sit in our house every day and wonder how we got here because we are so young.” “God really did have a hand in all of that,” Tim added. “We’re not house builders. We build furniture. There’s a big difference.” Tim and Natalie remember the cottage on the MacKenzie’s property with only a chest and a television on top that they called home, and they are thankful for the journey that has created a handcrafted life for their family.

Skylar’s bedroom is tucked under the eaves on the second level of the house. Tim’s mother made the linen duvet cover, and Natalie repurposed a shower curtain to create the dotted coverlet. Dawn Griffith creates her line of handmade jewelry, Dawn’s Eclectic Energy, using natural gemstones, sandalwood beads, feathers and a little bit of metaphysical magic. WRITTEN BY Lanie Anderson | PHOTOGRAPHED BY Joe Worthem

Dawn Griffith

is in tune with her mind, body and spirit whether she is teaching yoga or making earthy beaded necklaces. Griffith is a yoga instructor in Oxford and the jewelry designer behind Dawn’s Eclectic Energy. For Griffith, a mind-body-spirit connection goes beyond her yoga mat; she also incorporates that connection into her handmade jewelry. “My yoga practice is where my creativity comes from a lot of times,” Griffith said. “In the middle of my yoga practice, I’ll see an image of something I want to make. I think yoga has definitely fueled my jewelry.” Griffith’s awareness of her body is also evident in her jewelry designs. She enjoys decorating herself with tattoos and natural gemstones, and she believes her necklaces, earrings and bracelets enhance the beauty a person already possesses. “I’m drawn to nature, but I also like a little bit of sparkle and flair,” Griffith said. “I don’t think someone needs to put on jewelry to look beautiful. I think the necklace wears the person, and the person brings out the beauty of the necklace.” Before Griffith started Dawn’s Eclectic Energy, she taught yoga in Charlotte, N.C., where she and her husband lived before their move to Oxford in February. Griffith knew she wanted to start a jewelry business after making necklaces for the bridesmaids in her October 2014 wedding. “I wanted to handmake my bridesmaids’ gifts,” Griffith said. “I made my necklace and the bridesmaids’ necklaces for my wedding. [Making jewelry] was

Dawn Griffith (pictured) teaches Vinyasa flow and power yoga classes at Southern Star and Hot Yoga Plus. Her practice influences her jewelry design, and she is often inspired by an image of a new necklace or bracelet while she is doing yoga. She makes traditional mala prayer or meditation necklaces, which usually have a large middle bead, called a guru bead.

something I wanted to do for years. I just didn’t know where to start.” She primarily uses natural gemstones, sandalwood beads and even feathers from her chickens. She often chooses stones based on their supposed metaphysical properties. For example, Griffith made a necklace with rose quartz – a stone believed to promote selflove – because a friend wanted a necklace that encouraged self-acceptance. “I think something has the power that you give it,” Griffith said. “If you want to believe it, then, yes, it has that power and that intention with it. If you think it’s crazy, then buy the jewelry for its look.” Griffith believes the jewelry-making

process and practicing yoga are similar, due to their repetitive and relaxing qualities, and finds both to be meditative. Griffith receives many requests from yoga students for mala necklaces, sometimes used for prayer or meditation in yoga and made of 108 beads with knots tied in between each bead. “Making the malas is very meditative,” Griffith said. “I’ve caught myself falling asleep between knots in the necklace. It’s just really calming.” Griffith studied ceramics at the University of West Georgia, where she liked to make small, intricate figures in her classes. When she started making jewelry, Griffith naturally enjoyed working with small pieces.

She also learned in her ceramics classes that art often happens organically—her favorite part of jewelry making. “A lot of times a piece will want to make itself, so I have to go with mistakes and be able to see them as positive changes instead of fixing them,” Griffith said. That mantra of positivity is what Griffith hopes to convey through both her yoga classes and her wearable artwork. She added, “A lot of the pieces I’ve made started out as mistakes and ended up being very good designs.” View and purchase Griffith’s designs at dawns-eclectic-energy.com and on Instagram @dawnseclecticenergy. Custom designs are available upon request.

Griffith likes to bring out the beauty of nature in her designs and uses stones such as pyrite, which is thought to have masculine energy, and clear quartz, thought to be a clearing stone. “I like something that’s subtle but still catches the eye,” Griffith said. “There’s something beautiful about dainty and discreet jewelry, but you’re still drawn to it. I don’t think it needs to be loud or bold to accomplish that.”

I AM OXFORD Jack Abraham

INTERVIEWED BY Meaghin Burke | PHOTOGRAPHED BY Joe Worthem Quarterback Jack Abraham is an Oxford High School senior. He reflects on his last football season with the Chargers. Q: What’s it been like playing for Coach Johnny Hill, who is retiring this year? A: It’s been an amazing experience. I’ve known Coach since third or fourth grade when he would come out to watch my peewee team. He’s like a second father to me. We’re around him all the time. Coach Hill knows all his players and loves everybody. It’s definitely a family-type atmosphere. Q: You recently led your team to a victory over Lafayette in the Crosstown Classic. What did that mean to you? A: That was a big game for us, knowing it was Coach Hill’s last Crosstown Classic. We really wanted a big win for him. Q: Who comes out and cheers for you? A: My sister is actually a cheerleader. She’s a 10th grader. My mom and dad have supported me since the beginning. My grandparents come out. My granddad actually moved here last year from Vicksburg, Miss., just to be around for senior year. A bunch of family from Memphis and Vicksburg have been coming since my sophomore year. Q: You committed to Tulane in April, but Cal, UCLA and Louisiana Tech are still recruiting you. Where do you want to go? A: I’m trying to decide between Tulane and Cal [University of California, Berkeley]. I had already decided to go to Tulane when California came along and started talking to me. I’m looking to go pre-med. I like science and math, and both Cal and Tulane have good medical schools. At either school, I’d be in a good place. Q: What are you going to miss about Oxford? A: I’m going to miss being around everybody, teammates, coaches, friends. It’s going to be tough leaving them, and my family, too.

Don’t let heartburn ruin your life. Acid reflux disease affects approximately 30% of the American population, causing daily heartburn symptoms – but heartburn is only one sign that you may have gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD, a serious condition that has been linked to esophageal cancer. Baptist Heartburn Treatment Center can diagnose GERD and offers minimally invasive treatment that can help stop reflux. Please go to baptistonline.org/heartburn to learn more and take our short online quiz to find out if you might have GERD.
