About INZBC
The India New Zealand Business Council [INZBC] is the premier trade organisation in New Zealand, which has been working for over 25 years to build trade relations between India & New Zealand. Since 1989, the India New Zealand Business Council (INZBC) has promoted and encouraged trade in goods and services, investment, scientific, technical and economic cooperation between India and New Zealand. INZBC is a member-based independent organisation, not-for-profit incorporated society, which exists for three purposes: • To lobby and inform government on trade-related matters • To disseminate information and know-how on doing business between the two countries • To facilitate business development on behalf of members through leveraging networks INZBC is run by industry leaders of New Zealand, who have years of experience in this sphere, thereby becoming the key stake-holders for International Trade Development of India & NZ. INZBC has been recognised as the main industry body by both the governments of India & NZ. Almost all of the visiting delegations of Govt. of India have been hosted by INZBC, and we have organised networking events for them. With over 160 members spanning across various industries, like agriculture, horticulture, dairy, infrastructure, finance, education, tax planning, etc.; the members form the main-stay of corporate leaders of New Zealand. INZBC holds regular industry events, calling upon specialists and ministers, representatives of NZTE, MFAT,etc. for meaningful dialogues within the business community. INZBC strives to help the industry to engage, interact and grow together.

INZBC Edutech Summit sets a positive pathway for the education industry Education and services sector is a very vital part in the New Zealand economy and collaboration alone can help it grow. The industry has to look at new ways of working with overseas companies and create new pathways, which is a win-win for both NZ & India. This was the essence of the talks given by various industry heads and policy makers at the INZBC Summit 2017. ‘The Education Summit’ was organised by the India New Zealand Business Council (INZBC), at Auckland, on 4th August 2017; under the theme, ‘Knowledge, Skill and Technology’. The one-day event has been supported by the Indian High Commission and the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI). Other government agencies involved were Education NZ, NZTE and MFAT. Westpac and Weltec & Whitireia were the strategic partners of the Summit.

Heavy Political Representation
The Summit saw a very heavy political representation, right from the Ex-Prime Minister - Bill English, to the Minister for Trade - Todd McClay, Minister for Tertiary Education, Skills and Employment - Paul Goldsmith; Minister for Commerce & Small Business - Jacqui Dean. Labour Party was represented by Michael Wood, as spokesperson for Ethnic Communities. The Prime Minister laid emphasis on the importance of migrants getting new skills into the country and helping in the growth of the economy. He said that the education sector helps in this process of skill development, which is very vital for the economy. Todd McClay, while referring to the FTA negotiations said that the talks will go further after elections and he hopes to meet the commerce minister of India, if elected back, to take the negotiations forward. He also said that special attention would be giving to the services sector and the education industry, so that they also get benefits out of the FTA.

Delegations From India
The Summit saw a strong delegation of heads of educational institutions, organized by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), the oldest trade chamber in India. The delegation saw big-wigs of the industry like, Mohandas Pai (Chair-FICCI Skills Committee & Chairman - Manipal Global Education), Dr Ranendra N Saha (Director, BITS Dubai), Prof. Rupamanjari Ghosh (Vice Chancellor-Shiv Nadar University), Prof Indira Parikh (Founder President, Antardisha), and many more. Speaking on the Summit, Dr. A Didar Singh, Secretary General - FICCI said, “Changing technology impacts the business of education and skill development. New Zealand should look at India for opportunities in services like education, healthcare etc., in addition to manufacturing sector. INZBC & FICCI collaboration and partnership can play a facilitating role in this direction.�

Five Day Schedule For The Delegation
Dr. Singh, who lead the delegation was happy that the delegation could travel all over New Zealand and have B2B meetings, before the Summit. The delegation had visits to University of Canterbury, ARA Institute and Lincoln University in Canterbury. Later they had a meeting of the India-NZ Friendship group at the Parliament in Wellington, organized by MP Bakshi. The delegates had a visit to the Weltec & Whitiera campus in Wellington. They then had B2B meetings in Auckland, followed by a dinner with the sponsors. INZBC treasurer, Bhav Dhillon says, “This Summit and the business meetings conducted are a testament of the fact that INZBC is a national level organisation with very good teams in Christchurch and Wellington as well. We are happy that all stakeholders and delegates were satisfied with the level and quality of the meetings. We are positive of the outcomes of these meetings�.

New Partnerships for INZBC
At this summit, new partnerships were announced by INZBC. Weltec & Whitiera have joined Westpac as our Strategic Partners. The partnership is a commitment by both WelTec and Whitireia to the Indian Market in opening new doors for business, engaging with policymakers to gain new perspectives on Learning and Innovation Priorities, and exploring future collaborations with Indian education institutions, and other partners across the creative, film, entertainment, health, corporate and government sectors, with the assistance of both INZBC and FICCI, the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry. INZBC has also signed an MOU with the NZ Asian Leaders Organisation. Working together to promote diversity within businesses, influence policy and trade implication, NZAL and INZBC will utilize the expertise and experience of its thought leaders to increase New Zealand’s India capability through mini-policy summits and the India Unplugged series.

Education NZ Excellence Awards
Another highlights of the Summit was that thirty-one talented young university students from India received a 2017 New Zealand Excellence Award, by Education New Zealand (ENZ). The students are pursuing undergraduate or postgraduate study in New Zealand in the fields of business, design or STEM related programmes (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics).
ENZ Chief Executive Grant McPherson said, “India is a core trade, economic, political and education partner for New Zealand, with two-way trade valued at around $2.5 billion.” “These top young scholars will further strengthen ties between our two countries, by contributing to a broader exchange of ideas in our universities, building our respective research capabilities, and enriching New Zealand culture,” Mr McPherson said. Nineteen of the students received their awards in person at the Summit. This is the first round of the awards, and each scholarship has a value of NZD $5,000 towards the first year tuition fee.

Shobha Mishra Ghosh, the Asst. Secretary general of FICCI who also led the delegation said, “Education has been the driver of any developed economy globally. India too is focused on making its education sector robust and is looking at collaboration with countries that will be mutually beneficial. New Zealand holds a lot of opportunity particularly in areas of high end IT, animation, creativity, design, etc. India is one of fastest growing economies in the world today. India, and with it’s social, economic, cultural, geography diversity and strengths in frugal innovation, life sciences, IT, etc. provides immense opportunities for students from New Zealand as well.”

India has great potential to increase trade with New Zealand, says newly appointed Trade Commissioner / Consul General designate of NZTE to Mumbai, Ralph Hays. March 2017 | Auckland
India NZ Business Council members, recently got a chance to meet the newly appointed Trade Commissioner / Consul General designate of NZTE to Mumbai, to talk and discuss about the trade policies between India and New Zealand, that help businesses. The event was held on Monday, 6th March 2017 at the NZTE office in Auckland. Ralph was happy to have a direct interaction with members that came from different industries. “This was an opportunity for me to discuss with the business on the ground, on what their problems are and how we can help them grow�, said Ralph. The industry sectors represented at the event, ranged from Banking, to winery, education, finance, logistics, infrastructure, aviation and many more. The dialogue gave some deep insights into the problems faced by the members. A lot of discussion was around the problems being faced in the passing of the FTA. Kanwaljit Singh Bakshi, Member of Parliament who also attended the event, congratulated the newly appointed Trade Commissioner and Consul General. He said that both the governments are working very closely for better ties, more so after the last visit of John Key to India and his meeting with Modi.

Mayor Phil Goff asks for central government’s support for development of Auckland, at INZBC event. March 2017 | Auckland
The members of the India NZ Business council, recently had an opportunity to meet the Mayor of Auckland, Hon. Phil Goff. During the meet, he shared his vision on development of the city and gave his thoughts on FTA with India. The event was held on Wednesday, 29th March 2017 at Auckland Institute of Studies. The Mayor informed the members about the ongoing development of Auckland and talked about improvement of public transport, specially from Airport to CBD. He emphasised on the requirement of support from the government to do this. Phill said, “As Auckland is New Zealand’s only worldsclass city, the central government also needs to pitch in to the cost of the development”. His rational was simple, if the central government wants the share of the taxes, they have to give the due share in funding for developmental work. He further added, “To keep this city world-class and pollutions free, we need to take steps for making public transport more feasible and extensive”.

India and New Zealand have a lot of common ground and big sectors where they can mutually benefit. That was the main essence of Amitabh Kant’s address.
Mr. Kant, the CEO of Niti Ayog, Government of India was on an official visit to New Zealand. Amitabh Kant was visiting New Zealand as the 2017 Prime Minister’s Sir Edmund Hillary Fellow from April 29-May 6, as a guest of the New Zealand Government. The India New Zealand Business Council [INZBC] and MFAT had jointly organized a dinner for select business leaders to meet and interact with Mr. Kant.

Amitabh sent a very strong positive signal that India wants to work closely with New Zealand in all areas of trade and commerce. He invited the attending business leaders to come forwards and invest in India or collaborate with entrepreneurs in India, for taking the business forward.
The chief executive of the National Institution for Transforming India also claims India is more than ready for a free-trade agreement with New Zealand and is just waiting for Wellington to present an offer on liberalising the services sector to allow Indian companies to compete here. Mr. Kant appraised the delegates on the good work being done by the current Modi government in bringing fast change to the way the government runs. From the good effects of demonetization, digitization of banking and removal of all old rules and laws, he covered a lot of areas where growth and development can be seen.

The Indian High Commission and The India New Zealand Business Council [INZBC] Wellington Chapter had a very impressive dinner event held at Tulsi Restaurant Cuba Street, Wellington on 17th May 2017. A high-level delegation from Haryana visited Wellington, New Zealand on Saturday, June 17. The delegation was led by Shri O.P Dhankar, Hon’ble Minister of Agriculture, Govt. of Haryana. He was ably supported by the MLAs from Haryana, Shri Subhash Barala, Shri Mool Chand Sharma and Shri Tek Chand Sharma and other delegates and Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) Deputy Directors Mr Vishal Beri and Mr Surinder Pal Singh His Excellency High Commissioner of India to New Zealand, Mr Kohli and Mr Sandeep Sood, Head of Chancery, High Commission of India were very delighted to receive the delegation. The event was well attended by the prominent businessmen from Wellington, Headed by Jay Changlani from Accounts Icon Chartered Accountant and Chapter Head of Wellington INZBC, ably supported by Mr Monty Patel of Tulsi Restaurant Chain, and especially those from the Agriculture and associated sectors.

Indian officers exchange dialogue on GST in NZ July 2017 | Wellington
The Indian High Commission, along with INZBC and Accounts Icon, hosted an event in Wellington, on 20 July 2017, in Wellington. A senior delegation of officers from the ministry of finance, India spoke about the new GST environment in India. From NZ perspective, Jay Changlani (NZ Tax expert and Wellington Chapter Head – INZBC) gave an overview and discussed about the current issues with GST. From NZ perspective, the topic of discussion was on the services relating to land in New Zealand & rules applying zero-rating to supplies of services to non-residents such as such as legal engineering or architectural services. This issue is currently in the parliament. Siddharth Jain, Assistant Commissioner, Government of India expressed his satisfaction on the meeting with the INZBC representatives. “It was wonderful interacting with the India New Zealand Business Council in Wellington. We could see the similarities between the New Zealand GST system and the Indian system”, he said. Mr. Jain commented, “New Zealand has a very efficient system which has been there for the last thirty years. In fact, the challenges faced by New Zealand in taxing services was very similar to what India is facing. It was also very interesting to see the Indian diaspora settled in Wellington having such an in-depth understanding of the GST system.” Siddharth Jain, and Jay Changlani did the Comparative Analysis between India and NZ.

NZ govt. to work consistently on a positive outcome for FTA with India through RCEP talks. September 2017 | Auckland
The government of New Zealand is working closely with all partners at RCEP to work for a very positive and good quality FTA with India. However, NZ has to work on any trade negotiations, on it’s merits and it’s benefits for the kiwi companies. This was the essence of the talks, that Todd McClay had with trade and corporate sector heads, at a meet organised by India New Zealand Business Council [INZBC]. INZBC organised a talk session with a group of companies working actively with the Indian market, on 7th September 2017, in Auckland. The purpose was to get a direct view of the Trade Minister, Todd McClay, on the ongoing negotiations with RCEP. The trade minister reiterated that, “RCEP builds on New Zealand’s already strong relationships in Asia, and will open up more opportunities for New Zealand businesses in these fast growing economies.” There are 16 countries involved in RCEP: the 10 members of ASEAN; plus the six countries with which ASEAN has free trade agreements—Australia, China, India, Japan, Korea, and New Zealand. These six countries are known as the ASEAN Free Trade Partners (AFPs). Minister Todd said, “Joining RCEP is an important step, for getting bigger access to the NZ market. RCEP countries have a total population of more than 3 billion, a total GDP of around $US23 trillion and they account for about 27% of global trade. RCEP has the potential to increase business across the board in New Zealand”, he said.

INZBC’s India Unplugged offers solutions in logistics for trade with India. November 2017 | Auckland
INZBC recently conducted a workshop on dealing with various logistical issues, while doing trade with India. Industry experts from DHL Global Forwarding and TMF Group presented their solutions for existing importers and exporters to India. “India is a tremendous area of potential growth for New Zealand trade, and we are very encouraged by moves to bring forward an FTA between our two countries to reduce barriers to trade including duty”, said Glenn Coldham, Head of Customs in NZ, DHL Global Forwarding. Glenn gave his views on the various challenges around customs in the trade with India. He said, “At times we do experience inconsistencies with moving sea and air shipments out of India due to the complexities of documentation and associated approvals to allow cargo to move without delay.” “However, it is very pleasing to know India has started to reduce that complexity with the new GST introduction as part of those improvements”. Glen expressed his positivity on the changes being introduced in the Indian market. TMF Group’s, Company Secretary, Siddhartha Sharma also gave a presentation on the challenges and opportunities on opening a new office / company in India.

NZ Asian Leaders
NZ Asian Leaders (NZAL) is a professional organisation aimed at accelerating Asian Leaders’ contribution to New Zealand. Established in 2013, NZAL is recognized as a place that connects, inspires and grows Asian leaders across New Zealand. NZAL promotes diversity in New Zealand businesses and facilitates access to Asian perspectives and leadership. Prior to the launch of the organisation, there was a noticeable lack of Asians in top leadership positions in New Zealand companies. Having identified this gap, NZAL was established to provide a place for Asian New Zealanders who are leaders in their fields, to enjoy peer to peer support and have visibility with New Zealand companies.
