History of IOA.....................................................................
The late Dr M G Kini may well be considered the forerunner of Orthopaedic Surgery in India. The first surgeon who limited his surgical activities to Orthopedic practice was Dr R J Katrak of Bombay. The other pioneers in the field were Dr N S Narasimha Aiyar of Madras and Dr S R Chandra of Calcutta. The senior orthopaedic surgeons met at Hyderabad and formulated the Orthopedic Section of the Association of Surgeons of India in 1954, but the dream came true in the Amritsar meeting of the ASI in December 1955. The members of the Association realised the pressing need to start a journal and against heavy odds and the first issue was published in 1967. In later years, the IOA has helped the establishment of Orthopedic departments in various parts of the country, and centers of postgraduate education. The Association has also actively helped the formation of local Orthopedic branches in different parts of the country. The Silver Jubilee conference at Bombay in 1980 is remembered especially for two developments: the initiation of the CME Programme and the Silver Jubilee Commemoration lecture. The IOA has been successfully conducting Instructional Course Lectures, and member fellowships. Since then the CME programme has been an excellent showcase of the current state of art in Orthopedics. The long felt desire of the members of the IOA to become independent resulted in the resolution passed at the Cuttack Conference in 1986 advocating a clean break. This was ratified at the Agra conference of the ASI in December 1986. The IOA had now become an independent body. Since then our Association and our annual conferences have grown from strength to strength. The annual conferences have continued to be an excellent showcase of scientific and cultural interaction between members. The conference attendance had soared to new heights and now it is not uncommon to have over three thousand participants to the conference. The IOA has been fortunate to be allotted a piece of land in Delhi for its permanent office. With the rapid advances being made in the field of Orthopaedics in India and abroad, the avenues are open for rapid growth of our association. Looking at the vast strides taken by our body, there is no doubt that the future is extremely bright.

President Message for IOACON 2014 Theme of the year: “Cultivate... Research an attitude and learning a passion The 59th Annual Conference of Indian Orthopaedic Association will be held in historic, beautiful city of Hyderabad. Hyderabad is famous for jewel, pearls, art, culture and prosperity. The Indian Orthopaedic Association in its 59th year of existence and has achieved the objective of brotherhood among fellow orthopaedic surgeons. It is a platform to discuss art and science of orthopaedics. Now we should aim to provide minimum standard of care in orthopaedics to one and all. We need to find out credible evidence based solutions to clinical problems unique to India. It is important that we develop an attitude for research and passion for learning so that every experience at treating patients by individuals will add to existing knowledge. The deliberations in Hyderabad will be a step in the direction. I appeal to all the senior surgeons to present a free paper and participate in discussion to improve the quality of research deliberations. We aim to provide quality scientific programme to make it interactive and productive. The social meeting points are arranged to strengthen the social bonds. Hyderabad IOACON will certainly be milestone event. The organizing team is awaiting your arrival to Hyderabad. Dr. Anil K. Jain, MS, MAMS, FAMS, FRCS (England) President, Indian Orthopaedic Association Ex-Editor-Indian Journal of Orthopaedics Professor of Orthopaedics UCMS & GTB Hospital Visiting Professor The Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University Secretary General, World Orthoapedic Concern

IOACON is a massive congregation of orthopaedic surgeons of India and requires preparations over many months. A closed interaction is required between the local organizing committee, office bearers of IOA and so many vendors involved in the arrangements. The delegate may not appreciate the hard labour put in by so many people. However, if the function goes well, it is the reward which is most dear to all the members of the team which organized the function.

Message from Hon. Secretary
Hyderabad IOACON is no different. Fortunately, we have a very good team which has worked hard. The Scientific Programme has taken a lot of time and effort to arrange and we are sure that it would serve its purpose. A good number of foreign faculty members have been invited to share their experiences. Besides the routine and fixed fixtures, few new things have also been added like continuous depiction of bone and joint day activities, which is a flagship programme of IOA, in its effort to reach the common people. I feel privileged and proud to be associated with this IOACON – 2014 at Hyderabad. The memories of this will last a lifetime for me. I have made good friends in Hyderabad and I am sure, after the conference is over, I will have much more friends.
With best regards and thanks to the local organizing team.
Dr. Sudhir K Kapoor Hon. Secretary, Indian Orthopaedic Association

About Hyderabad, India: Hyderabad city is the capital city of the Indian state of Telangana. It lies on the Deccan Plateau, 541 meters (1776 ft) above sea level, over an area of 625 km² (244 mile²). The city has an estimated population of around 8 million, making it 4th largest city in India , while the population of the metropolitan area was estimated above 9 million. Religiously and culturally, the city is united with Hindus, Muslims and Christians. Hyderabad city is known for its rich history, food and its multi-lingual culture, both geographically and culturally. Founded in the year 1591 by fifth Qutb Shahi Ruler Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah. The original city of Hyderabad was founded on the banks of river Musi. Now known as the historic old city, home to the Charminar, Falaknuma Palace, Chowmallah Palace and Makkah Masjid, it lies on the southern bank of the river. Hyderabad and Secunderabad are twin cities, separated by the Husain Sagar (bound by the 'Tank Bund'), a man made lake made during the time of Ibrahim Qutb Shah in 1562. People: What makes Hyderabad such a special destination is its multi-cultural mix of people. Language: Hyderabad India, There are four languages in Hyderabad: Hindi, Deccani-Urdu, Telugu and English. English is the language of business and administration, and is widely spoken and understood. Most Hyderabadis are bilingual, and speak their mother tongue as well as English. Security & Safety: Hyderabad has a well-founded reputation as one of the safest cities in the world. Crime rates are very low and the streets are safe to walk in any time of the day or night. However, I do recommend that visitors to my city take the normal precaution of keeping their valuables in a safe place at all times. The Andhra Pradesh Government has and will continue to be vigilant in ensuring that Hyderabad remains safe. It has stepped up security measures at key installations and other sensitive places. The Government has also made it known that extremism originating from religion or race has no place in Hyderabad and it will not hesitate to take action against any extremist or terrorist groups or individuals. Climate: Hyderabad has a unique combination of a tropical wet and dry climate that borders on a hot semi-arid climate (Kppen climate classification BSh), with hot summers from late February to early June, the monsoon season from late June to early October and a pleasant winter from late October to early February. In the evenings and mornings, the climate is generally cooler because of the city’s good elevation. Hyderabad gets about 32 inches (about 810 mm) of rain every year, almost all of it concentrated in the monsoon months. The highest maximum (day) temperature ever recorded was 45.5 oC (113.9 oF) on 2 June 1966, while the lowest minimum (night) recorded temperature was 6.1 oC (43 oF) on 8 January 1946. How to Reach Hyderabad Roads: Hyderabad is connected to the rest of the country by National Highways—NH-7, NH-9 and NH-202. Hyderabad is also well connected to the remaining parts of the state. Many flyovers and underpasses are also being constructed to ease traffic congestion in the city. The Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation runs a fleet of 19,000 buses, the largest in the world. Hyderabad has the third largest bus station facility in Asia, with 72 platforms for 89 buses to load passengers at a time. These stations provide connectivity within the city and the rest of the country. Air: The international air port at Shamshabad, is a major airport in India and paved its way up in to the top five airports of the world list by ACI. There has been an unprecedented increase in the number of passengers leading to increased air traffic The Airport at Begumpet was unable to cope up with the situation and was shut down on 2008-03-22. The new Rajiv Gandhi International Airport was opened in March 2008 by Sonia Gandhi at Shamshabad, southwest of the city The airport has the longest runway in India and caters to the high passenger and cargo volumes it experiences.
