Statement

I am part of the Brownian movement that defines the world we live in. Sometimes I think I understand it, sometimes I am just an observer. I am in love with the chaos and dynamism of it all, especially when it becomes part of my creative process. I am a lucid dreamer and I am not afraid of being too curious. -

URBAN WATERFRONT REVITALIZATION

The idea was to revitalise and reinvigorate an urban waterfront - currently a residual space and parking lot. The city of Galati was once prosperous, and brimming with economic activity during it’s industrial boom in a bygone-era. What was once a vibrant fishing port, is now an underused car-park.

For each of these spaces, I wanted to create different ‘worlds’ with different feeling-states. For example, the intent with the two beaches was for people to follow the axis of the secondary streets, and have them discover the expanse. This feeling of discovery is enhanced by the green spaces closing behind, which provide a sense of reclusion via a subtle raise off the beach.

My idea was to breathe new life into this site, while simultaneously connecting with it’s history. I’ve proposed a series of public spaces, all interconnected, and all providing function within the community.

A contrasting experience is the fish market. By using glass as the main material for the ground floor, the space becomes a communal area. The market expands outside the building by using the public space around its dining area and the river as its resource. In summer glass doors slide fully open allowing an entirely open space. Above the market, enveloped in CORTEN - a living material - is a restaurant commemorating the area’s history through its cuisine.

Specifically, the project entails: two urban beaches (each with a pool), a modern fish market, a playground, outdoor sports area, shop and bar area, and an amphitheatre with it’s stage on water.

URBAN HOTEL Tineretului neighbourhood in Bucharest is defined by the presence of 2 diametrically opposes urban textures. The social housing built by the communist regime and the traditional craftsman house. The site is located at the centre of these two typologies, on the grounds of a former hospital building, now is an abandoned space. In order to mediate the relationship between the dominance of the social high rise and the 1-2 level house, the ground floor of the hotel is predominantly public. Due to its lack of use, the site is now flooded with vegetation. Part of the concept was to keep part trees and create a hidden English garden, publicly accessible. In order to create an a more dynamic perception of the facade, the windows of the rooms are slightly receded. The windows also shift up and down, allowing the an unique display of shadows and light.

COCOON TOWER FOR LOVERS My concept was to build a space for couples to exist in a state of peace, and isolation from the outside world. The tower consists of six concrete cubes (5m x 5m) stacked one on top of the other. The bottom one is buried in the ground while the other 5 cubes reach towards the sky. The experience begins with an introspective walk deep into the woods, where couples are met with a tall, impressive concrete structure. They then enter the structure to find themselves in complete darkness, independently making their way – using only their hands gliding along the structure to guide them along the corridors. Walking into the main room they find the outdoor sky piercing through the pointed roof above, and projected across the floor below (courtesy of a ‘pinhole photography technique’). The room is a place where up becomes down and down becomes up - a change of roles to ease the continuous thought of everyday life.

GARDEN ON WHEELS CARAVANSERAI Making use of only recycled materials, we chose to design a modular structure for the community around Caravanserai.

Using foldable tables and chairs stacked inside, the space expands outside the structure through its furniture. Thus, becoming a dining area, an urban theatre, a workshop space, a classroom and an organic food shop.

A net of reinforcing bars becomes a vine support and also is able to hold different shaped boxes with plants and other materials. The elements can be moved around, depending on the needs and vision of the user.

CRAZY GOLF CAMILLE WALALA London Design Week launched an open call for designers to create the ultimate mini-golf experience. Together with artist Camille Walala and set designer Julia Jomaa we created an immersive installation that was selected to be built as part of the festival. We chose to transform Camille Walala’s 2D signature style into a vibrant 3D landscape. Numerous routes to the hole present themselves – across bridges, up slopes, around sharp angular corners. The same game can never be played twice. The modular structure consists of 8 individual MDF boxes (2000x2500) fixed together. They form the base on which the smaller elements are dropped in like a puzzle. By erecting plunging triangular canopies, a disorientating shadow play of stripes is created on the course below, despite its playful visual appeal. This is not a course for the unwary.

Artist Residency in the Arctic Circle Fortdypningsrommet FleinvĂŚr, Norway Surrounded by the designs of Rintala Architects and TINN, we had the opportunity to rethink and rehabilitate the former waiting room on the pier into a housing facility. Using left over materials from the main constructions we created new openings in the building and remodelled the interior space to suit the new function.

Bunesti School of Philosophy The inside - out student house The constructive solution was a house of adobe inside a house of wood. The adobe wall is layered in two concentric circles, accommodating the students room on the outside and creating common courtyard in the middle. The walls are free-standing and left with the roll of insulation. Thus emphasizing the principles of free plan.

CALUP - Parallel Worlds We reinstalled this unused historical building through highlighting its economic and cultural potential. The top floor explored live scenarios of possible futures for the house (creative office, dance studio, boutique hotel). While the ground floor hosted a pop-up restaurant and an object-found installation that brought into attention the communist era - when the building was Romania’s Film headquarters.

FOLDS Drawing inspiration from the game ‘Tangram’, this typeface unfolds letters by playing with the triangle-form. Using only two sizes, I was able to define an entire alphabet. Whether its creating words, letters or just figures, it’s a game that aims to encourage abstract thinking and stimulate imagination.
