NEW EXTENSION OF THE UNIVERSITY LIBRARY OF THE RWTH UNIVERSITY location: Aachen,Germany prof.: Dr.-Ing. Anke Naujokat Univ-Prof. Anne-Julchen Bernhardt

RWTH Aachen University’s public learning rooms are bursting at the seams and the university is looking forward to expand the library in the surrounding area. Aachen, as many other medieval cities, doesn’t possess a great number of open green spaces in the center of the city. As such the park that connects the two existing libraries shouldn’t be ignored and tumbled over by the new expansions of the library. In that regard, how could a new building be created, in such a way that the function of the park not only would not be taken away, but it would elevate the park as a concept itself. Another point of concern was how would the new extensions of the library not burden the existing buildings by blocking such as access, view and natural light to them. The solution explored was by designing the biggest part of the new buildings underground.

The functions of the existing buildings were reorganized to make the libraries more efficient. That being the case the old library was dedicated to house all the books and the second library to contain all the learning rooms.

Following that thought, the infrastructure of the quarter was surveyed, and the area analyzed. It seemed important to keep the connection between the inner city and campus accessible and to use this path to divide the property into two sections. Since the passage also faces south, it offered the

opportunity to sufficiently light the underground areas on both sites. In the end, the two libraries would clearly separate, but at the same time also connect. This was accompliced with the use of the passage, since it connects the two main entrances. On one side, resides the

public library complex where the learning rooms and public areas are located. On the other side, is the solitary “building of the book, where literature reigns. Finally, in between lies the passage, that can be used for some sunbathing on a sunny day. It is possible to enter the buildings from dif-

ferent entrances, but the most prominent is the one in the basement. Thus, in the basement the atmosphere is more serene, where visitors can learn in peace, have a conversation, visit an exhibition, or learn in the amphitheater. In this room conferences, lectures and cine-

ma evenings can be held. The higher one goes, the livelier the surroundings become. On the ground floor there are functions such as cafes, copy stores, bookstores and information centers that can help students, as well as the second entrance of the building.

The material copper was chosen because of its durability, its low density compared to lead, making it structurally lighter. Copper also has a comparatively high melting point and a high fire resistance.

ARRIVING CITY BERLIN location: Berlin prof.: Dipl.-Ing.Architect Wolfram Putz, Univ.-Prof.Dipl.-Ing.M.Architect Peter Russell Group Project Summer 2016 with the immigration crisis being at its peak, the old airport in Tempelhof was used as a temporary hotspot for the arriving immigrants at the time. As a result the living conditions were borderline inhumane and a more permanent solution was needed. One of the ideas was to create permanent appartments next to the airport on Tempelhofer field. The main purpose of this project was to create a settlement in a way, that it would not turn to a ghetto area after some years. Also it should bring the people of Berlin in contact with the immigrants. For that reason the design of the new appartments has a more free shape, like a maze that invites the visitors to walk around and discover the hidden spaces.

MIETFABRIK location: Aachen prof.: Univ.-Prof.Dipl.-Ing. Hartwig Schneider, Univ.-Prof.Dr.-Ing.Martin Trautz, Univ.-Prof.Dr.Ing.Dirk Henning Braun In order to offer new companies optimal spatial and functional conditions, a start-up centre is to be built on the Melaten campus. In this area, companies active in development and construction would be able to rent space for production, workshops and offices. The objective was the development of a building with flexibly usable areas for development, production and offices, as well as exhibitions and product demonstrations.

THE GROWING HOUSE location: Cologne,Germany prof.: Univ-Prof. ir. Wim van den Bergh The project aims to create an adaptable and successively expandable form of housing that can be adjust to the needs of occupants. The “Growing house” was initially conceived as a competion, which was initiated in 1931 by Martin Wagner. One of the tasks of the competition was to develop designs for a core house with a living space of 25m², which would not exceed the budget of 25.000 Reichsmark and was to be able to “grow” to a usable area of 80m² by means of extensions. Also, the structure had to be designed in a way that at least 80% of the house could be constructed in a workshop. This project aims to analyse if the goals of the competion are still relevant in todays society. If it is still possible to to design an adaptable home that can meet the changing needs of the people over the next few decades. The design is intended to provide an answer to today’s housing demand in a city like Cologne,Germany.

The image we have for a building in our head is usually a solid structure that cannot change much. Why not have a building that can alter to our everchanging needs? By getting bigger or smaller, with rooms, whose size and orientation can always be redefined.

THE IDEAL ATELIER location: Worpsede prof.: Dipl.-Ing., Univ-Prof. Axel Sowa Worpswede’s golden days go back more than one hundred years as one of the most famous artist colonies in Germany. But, with the passing of time Worpswede got slowly forgotten. This projects objective was the creation of the ideal atelier, as a mean to attract artist back to the art colony. The ideal atelier was designed inside an old railbus that was used to connect Worpswede with the city of Bremen. As the old trucks are still in a good condition and are seldom used, the idea of a moving atelier, which is able to travel through the moor, gives the artist the oportunity to work and exhibit his work in many different locations.

REPURPOSE OF AN OLD SUGAR FACTORY location: DĂźren, Germay prof.: Univ-Prof. Dr.Klaus Selle Group Project The goal of this project was the restructuring of the former sugar factory at the Paradise Road in DĂźren, Germany. The unutilized area was divided into three zones. The west side is concieved as a residential area and the east side as the industrial area. These two areas are divided by a park, that connects the still standing buildings of the old factory with the three silos. The park also works as a noise reduction wall between the residential area, the industrial area and the railroad, which is located on the south borders of the old sugar factory. The residential area is to serves as social and multigenerational housing. In the center of each housing complex reside communal buildings such as a librariy, a day care center, workrooms, multifuctionsal spaces, cafes and much more.
