Parents grapple with Halloween protocol By TIM STAUFFER The Iola Register

Trick or treating is normally an easy decision for parents. Free candy? What’s not to like? But this year, aside from the typical ghosts and ghouls known to haunt familiar stomping grounds on October 31, the concerns of many parents center on the novel coronavirus. Is it safe to go door to door? Should kids wear masks? What about candy? Should we put it in plastic baggies? How do you ensure kids are disin-

Amie VanNice fecting their hands between houses? Or is it better, and just plain easier, to keep the kids home, turn off the lights and wait for next year? The Kansas Department of Health of Environment’s guidelines for celebrating Halloween are quite clear. They do not recommend door

to door trick or treating, stating that it “is very difficult to maintain proper social distancing on porches and at front doors, ensure everyone is properly wearing face coverings, and because food sharing is risky.” That said, it’s hard to believe Halloween can simply be called off. Surely some young sugar-fiend will ring your doorbell, or a rebellious teen will escape out the backdoor with friends while “Beetlejuice” is on. Then what? ON THE DAY they hung him in 1862, young private Bell, too, was seized by fear. Though the July heat was suffocating, his limbs grew numb with cold, stomach acidic and bilious. A week earlier, he’d been drinking and getting wild with his Union brothers near Humboldt, during a brief respite from his duties at the fort in Iola. Now he was to “suffer death by being hung by the neck until ... dead, dead, dead.” If only he’d never touched her, Elizabeth Haywood. But he’d done it all the same. Threw her down, she said. Marshall, LaTurner campaigns pass through Iola By TIM STAUFFER The Iola Register

A crowd of about a dozen Republican supporters greeted Rep. Roger Marshall and Jake LaTurner outside Pete’s Jump Start in Iola Wednesday morning. The event was organized by the Marshall campaign and marked one stop of many as the two politicians rush to make the most of the campaign’s final days. Marshall, who currently represents Kansas’s 1st district in the U.S. Congress, is running for an open Senate seat vacated by the retiring Pat Roberts. In a sign of how tight both races are, the visit from Marshall and LaTurner comes three days after both Bollier and De La Isla came to Iola. When asked to opine on the state of the race, Marshall responded, “It’s been great. We started off on a 38-stop tour Sunday afternoon in the snow in Plainville. It’s amazing, the excitement we’re seeing. It feels like a Chiefs pre-game.” The small group gathered See CAMPAIGN | Page A6

Kansas sees record spike TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Kansas doesn’t appear to be containing the coronavirus, reporting nearly 3,400 new cases Wednesday over just two days and a record seven-day rolling average for new COVID-19-related hospitalizations. The state Department of Health and Environment’s data showed that the rolling average for new confirmed cases was 1,084 a day for the seven days ending Wednesday. That’s 33% higher than the previous record for the seven-day rolling average of 815 for the seven days ending Monday. The health department said it switched this weekend to a new, automated system that solve the problem because people are going to rebel,” said Senate Vice President Jeff Longbine, an Emporia Republican. The House’s top three Republicans issued a statement noting an agreement to promote public education to increase mask use, then called on Kansas residents to follow public health officials’ advice because, “This is the right thing to do.” Senate Majority Leader Jim Denning, an Overland Park Republican, said: “I think that the special session is off the table.” But House Minority Leader Tom Sawyer, a

allows new cases to be added to its count more quickly. It said the change accounted for about 1,500 of the 3,369 cases reported since Monday, but even with those cases factored out, the state had a record rolling seven-day average. The health department said Kansas has had 82,045 cases since the pandemic began. The state also reported an additional 31 COVID-19-related deaths to bring the total to 1,007 for the pandemic. Kansas had another 106 hospitalizations to bring the pandemic total to 3,752. The state averaged 35 new hospitalizations a day over the seven days ending Wednesday. Wichita Democrat, said rewriting the law to allow a statewide mask mandate could be an option if the leaders’ approach “doesn’t work.” “Hopefully, this does work and solves the problem,” Sawyer said. are facing an increasing strain combatting the coronavirus as cases rise statewide and residents and families grow distressed about limits on visits. The state health department reports 261 clusters associated with long-term care, accounting for more than 3,800 cases of COVID-19, along with 440 deaths.

Halloween: Families want to celebrate holiday, but safely Continued from A1

titioner at Iola’s Community Health Center of Southeast Kansas, sympathizes with parents’ conundrum. “As a parent myself, I don’t want to change our entire lives around just for Halloween,” said Eccles. “But at the same time, I want my kids to be safe, and I want my kids’ friends to be safe, too.” This year, Eccles will be modifying their family’s Halloween festivities, visiting family and close friends only. “My kids are great at wearing masks, and we have hand sanitizer we’ll utilize on our adventures. We’ll also paint pumpkins and attempt some new arts and crafts activities. My kids are at an age that they love crafts. Anything that requires glue and scissors is always a hit.” Eccles, who works in family medicine, recommends families “make a choice they are comfortable with. Use the guidelines set forth by the CDC: Stay outside, social distance, wear a

Dizera Benham

Alisha Rutherford

mask and bring hand sanitizer.” Instead of trick or treating, the KDHE recommends families spend extra time this year decorating their homes, and participate in car parades, scavenger hunts, or online Halloween parties with friends and family. Eccles also suggested parents in search of alternatives check out Pinterest, which “is full of fun alternatives for kids to do at home.” Rebecca Johnson, the director of SEK Multi-County Health Departments, said that the organization is also recommending parents follow KDHE’s guidance and refrain from trick or treating this year. Amie VanNice and

Jeremy Gomez of Iola have three children, Mariah, 16, Dominiq, 8, and Asher, 2. While Mariah is “too cool for trick or treating,” Halloween is still something special for Dominiq, said VanNice. This year, her family’s plan “is to still take the two boys out trick or treating, but we’re just going to Trunk and Treats and visiting family. We’re not going to stop at every house down the street.” “It’s close to what we do every year,” VanNice explained, “but this time we have a COVID-19 outbreak in our neighborhood, so we’re trying to steer clear of extra risks.” For Amie and Jeremy,

that means masking up and using lots of hand sanitizer. “Dominiq has a mask, but Asher is too little for it to make sense. Dominiq doesn’t mind; he is happy just to go trick or treating.” Dizera Benham and husband Jake are also getting ready for Halloween with their daughter, Haley, 4, and their son Ethan, 3 months. “We’re doing our normal thing for Halloween this year,” said Benham. “We always take our kids to family and friends and go to the Trunk or Treats.” “My husband and I believe our kids have already missed out on enough this year,” she continued. “Halloween is my daughter’s favorite holiday. She’s been talking about Halloween since April.” Haley’s more than ready to show off her Elsa costume. “We’re worried about COVID, but you can be cautious and still live your life. My husband I will likely wear masks, and Haley is great with her mask,” reflects Benham.

A3

Alisha Rutherford, Iola, feels similarly. Her family is still planning on having their Halloween party, a family tradition, and she still intends to take her children trick or treating. “We always have a Halloween party with family and friends, but we also plan to go trick or treating.” “We’ll go to the Trunk or Treats,” says Rutherford, “but I feel the drivethrough ones are a little silly. We’ll visit the houses of family and friends, too.” While the pandemic is something that concerns Rutherford, she’s determined to make this Halloween as normal as possible. “There’s no reason to put my life on hold because of this. I’m not going to have my kid lose out on their opportunity to trick or treat when they’re young because of this illness.” Iola’s 2020 Trunk or Treat, sponsored by The Iola Area Chamber of Commerce, will likely be a popular destination, even more so with many families leery of visit-

ing multiple homes. The Chamber will implement several measures to make sure the event is as safe as possible, requesting all attendees wear a mask; gloves will also be distributed. Cars will be spaced 2-3 spots apart from each other, and all snacks and candy must be pre-packaged. For Jill Hartman, director of the Chamber, the decision to host this year’s event came down to “trying to make things as normal as possible” for people. “Our hope is that by hosting a centralized event like this, and making it as safe as possible for families, we provide a safe opportunity for families and kids.” Hartman’s comments echo the advice Eccles would offer: “Follow the guidelines, wear a mask, and stay within the bounds of each family’s comfort levels.” Because until things get back to normal — whenever that is and whatever it looks like — there’s no sense in making Halloween anything but scary, but just for all the right reasons.

~ Journalism that makes a difference

Even with all the chaos, shape of race unchanged With just days until Election Day, you don’t need another column from me on swing voters or key states. You don’t need more of my analysis of President Donald Trump’s style and how that has affected the race. You don’t need more of my thoughts on the suburbs or partisan polarization, or which Senate races will be crucial and who has the edge in the fight for control. Sometimes, enough is enough. I’ve already told you what I think about all those things and how I got here. The shape of the presidential contest has not changed fundamentally since early 2019, when I started handicapping the race. The president had plenty of opportunities to change things. He simply chose not to, or maybe (as in the case with COVID-19) he just was not up to the task. As most readers know, I once rated House and Senate races in my newsletter, which has become “Inside Elections with Nathan L. Gonzales.” I decided to use the same categories to rate the presidential contest this cycle that I used for years in rating congressional races. On Jan. 3, 2019, I looked at Trump’s standing, the 2018 results and the Democratic race and concluded, “There are too many questions surrounding the president’s reelection prospects to call the race even, and there are too many opportunities for the Democrats to blunder toward a weak general election nominee to rate the race Leans Democratic.” So, I rated the presidential contest as “Toss-up/Tilting Democratic.” About 14 months later, after watching Democrats move toward Joe Biden, I moved the race to “Lean Democratic.” As I wrote in a March 18 column, “Democrats are likely to be united in the fall, and President Donald Trump’s standing is stuck where it has been for many months. There are also more questions about presidential leadership and the economy, which the president has been relying on to help him win a second term.” On June 29, for all of the reasons I’ve been talking about since early June, I moved the race again, to “Likely Biden.” The Trump campaign never changed the trajectory of the race. The contest is still a referendum on the president, and he has never sought to broaden his appeal. It’s often said that a campaign reflects the values and leadership style of the candidate. Nothing could be more true this year, which is why I’m skeptical that the final week of the campaign will change the likely outcome. Democrats have successfully broadened the playing field, adding voters and competitive states that could potentially turn a narrow presidential victory into a more resounding one. After all, few of us thought that we’d be

watching Iowa and Georgia this late in the cycle. But as I outlined a little more than four years ago in my postelection Washington Post column: I was wrong in 2016, and there is always a chance I could be wrong again. So I am going to wait for the votes to be counted before declaring a winner. The future of the GOP

We don’t yet know the magnitude of Trump’s likely defeat or whether Republicans will suffer the kind of down-ballot thrashing that would force the party to reexamine itself and its future. A narrow presidential loss combined with the party keeping control of the Senate might not lead Republicans to look at themselves in the mirror. But even a dramatic defeat wouldn’t mean the end of this GOP. Four years after Republican Barry Goldwater was annihilated at the polls in 1964, his party came back to win the White House. And four years after Democrat George McGovern lost 49 states to Richard Nixon, the country elected Democrat Jimmy Carter as president. So even dramatic electoral defeats don’t always mean that the losing party is relegated to minority status for an extended period. A Biden electoral victory on Nov. 3 will be the easy part. Governing with a complicated coalition that includes former Republicans, progressives and pragmatists will be a much more difficult challenge. Enlarge the Supreme Court? Eliminate the filibuster? Republicans will look for — and find — wedge issues to divide the Democrats, as the partisan war we have been experiencing pauses for only a fleeting moment. Do you really think Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is going to roll over and play dead? Moreover, Trump is unlikely to simply slink into the shadows, licking his wounds and embracing the role of doting grandfather. Narcissists like Trump need attention, and he is likely to be outspoken about the next administration. Unfortunately, the national media will give him a platform from which to second-guess Biden and galvanize supporters. For the next week, though, don’t let your passion drive you crazy. Don’t overreact to every incident or accusation, real or manufactured. There are still races to watch, polls to digest (and, in some cases, ignore) and votes to be counted. And remember, there is still time for an invasion from Mars.

In 1952, a small battalion of Moran farmers banded together to help fellow farmers Leslie Bacon and Irvin Sanders who had fallen on hard times and were unable to attend to their crops. The crews descended on the fields and plowed 200 acres. Including a few boys, there were altogether 59 individuals and 33 tractors in the party, not counting dozens of women who served meals. Likely as not, the political persuasion of either Bacon and Sanders never factored into the equation as to whether their neighbors would come to their aid. Today, we wonder if the same could be said. Don’t let politics monopolize your life By JIM RICHARDSON Kansas Reflector

“Republicans shouldn’t thresh with Democrats.” My father was imparting wisdom upon me, something he’d heard from his father, learned on their farm in Kansas. Wisdom that maybe we could use today. I’d probably better translate. Back then farmers banded together to buy a threshing machine to be shared among neighboring farms during wheat harvest. This great communal tradition is laden with nostalgic memories of neighbor helping neighbor. The threshing picnic at the end of harvest is a rich icon of idyllic rural life. Friendship shown all around, we imagine. Not so, my father was telling me. Peace among farmers meant politics shouldn’t rear its ugly head. Republicans should harvest with Republicans. Democrats with Democrats. Worked better that way. Even then politics was bad medicine on farms in Liberty and Freedom townships in Republic County. Our current season of fire and brimstone triggered this memory. Politics consumes us now, like a raging prairie fire we can’t outrun. We are at each others’ throats, treat our neighbors like traitors. We suspect people we’ve known all our lives are actually an alien species, not one of us. We’ve learned to hate them. This partisan rancor is not new. My mother wrote about a neighbor who got so worked up at a political meeting at a nearby farm that he drove home and forgot his wife and children. So he had to go back to the barn at midnight, hitch up the horses to the buggy and go get them. And when her grandfather (a staunch Democrat) was sick and required a transfusion, he got it from Aunt Lila — a Republican. Republican blood in his veins! They never let him live it down. What have we forgotten about how to deal with this recurring feverish malady? Recently I read of a New York editor (a COVID refugee) who had moved to rural Penn-

Jim Richardson’s “Voting Baby” photograph was taken in 1976 in Russell, Kansas, when Bob Dole was running for vice president with Gerald Ford. (Submitted by Jim Richardson to Kansas Reflector) sylvania. Things had changed for her. Gone was her comfortable bubble, life among reliably like-minded people with whom any political thought could be shared without fear. It was pure culture shock. Welcome to our world. I live in a small town where no such ideologically segregated enclaves are possible. No, out of necessity we live and work with each other every day. (We may well think that some of our friends and neighbors are wackos, but if we are smart we just shut up about it.) We need them, they need us. I don’t debate politics with our plumber; tomorrow I may have a clogged drain. More than cynical social utility is at work here. (I’m not naive; political differences can’t just be swept under the carpet.) Without ever knowing his politics I know that plumber as a good and decent person. So are lots of people in town who don’t share my politics. That’s OK. Politics is just one measure of our social bargaining. Mutual respect demands forbearance, shown in small acts of tolerance. The conservative coffee group gathers early in the coffee shop, but they are careful to make way in good time for the liberal coffee group that comes in later. So perhaps America has not fallen from some imagined state of divine neighborly grace. (That probably never existed.) But we do seem to have forgotten the rules of co-existence that our grandparents practiced.

Something else may also be at work. If this societal truce has broken down (replaced by mutual contempt that verges on civil breakdown) perhaps it is because we have let politics monopolize our lives. What is wrong here is not that politics is bad but that it has come to dominate — indeed obliterate — all other measures by which we know each other. Political parties are in the business of winning. But if winning means vanquishing your neighbor down the street, then that’s not winning at all. Small-town politics is a paradox: You can’t really win by winning. We need each other too much, whatever our disagreements. Our communities are built out of a multitude of shared experiences and values, respect and mutual need. Politics today threatens to silence all those other ways by which we define ourselves, to break those links that bind us together. The day after the upcoming election we must set politics aside for a while. We must remember the rules of daily life by which a community — and a state — can grow and prosper. We must not let politics become the sole defining aspect of our public lives. It will be the end of us. scure gravel backways. The sun had begun to set, the light already gone. Beneath a steel blue sky, the vehicle twisted, writhed as the GPS signal died out. No worry. There was only one path left to take … deeper into the woods. Suddenly there it was, the dark iron gate overhead: Lorenz Schlichter Memorial. The cemetery was so still you could hear the yellowed leaves scratch and scrape the earth. Schlichter was a farmer from Germany who came to Kansas in 1857. With his wives Margaret and Caroline, together they had eight children. In the dying light I dreamed them there, putting young ones in the cold, hard soil, singing German hymns to a seemingly deaf God. Before the Schlichters, this same ground had belonged to the Heddens family, where they too put their babies in the earth. Little Edith and Flora and Frank. Also Len

and Levi. I had begun studying their ornate and broken stones when I first heard it: the haunting song of a European music box. The sound lilted through the air, until it was cut with a laughter like broken glass. Next came the creaking chains … and the Shadow. Clearly I was no longer welcome. Hastily moving towards the car, I had just thrown shut the door when: BAM! BAM! BAM-BAM! Throwing gravel in the vehicle’s wake, I tore back down the winding road, accompanied by a feeling like black widow spiders on my skin. Once back to the highway, I felt compelled to check for damage and there they were: dozens of muddy handprints covering the hood and doors. With the entire world collapsing around me like a black hole, it was then I recalled the cemetery’s other name: Child’s Play. FROM Le Roy down into extreme northwestern Woodson County,

At one time, groups would circle around the flat orange sandrock and make camp for the night, so I suspected darkness would afford a unique perspective in my search. Even if I tripped and fell over what I was looking for, I reck-

ers and was gambling blithely, when he managed to enrage another player so intensely that his opponent murdered him with a knife. But that wasn’t all. So incensed was the murderer that he decapitated his victim. Since that day, more

than a few eerie tales have circulated throughout the area surrounding Gridley, Virgil, Keck and Dry Creek. Not one to be superstitious, however, I never paid the stories of whiskey-drunk cattlemen much heed, so I continued along the moonlit trail, keeping watch for the sandstone landmark. Noticing something in the distance, I squinted hard until my eyes began to water, but could only make out what vaguely resembled a flame. Who was carelessly burning brush with so much wind? But before I finished asking myself the question, I heard the unmistakable sound of hoofbeats thundering in the distance. My heart stopped. And with a burst of manic adrenaline, I ran. Though not before I caught a glimpse of a white horse with a headless rider wreathed in flame. The whisper of his disembodied voice still fills my every nightmare.

to hear the two address what they believe matters most to Kansans. “I think the economy is the number one issue now,” said Marshall. “People can see that we are winning the war on COVID.” On Wednesday, Kansas reported record highs for its seven-day rolling averages of new COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations. The death total due to COVID for Kansas now stands at 1,007. Nationally, there are more than 226,000 COVID-related deaths. Marshall’s message to southeast Kansas? “I’m bringing a message of hope.” LaTurner, who at age 32 is the youngest statewide elected official in the U.S., said he feels optimistic about his race. “We think people are motivated. There’s a stark contrast between myself and the mayor of Topeka. I think we’re going to have an amazing turnout.” A former Kansas state senator, LaTurner tied his campaign message to that of President Trump. “I think we need to re-elect Donald Trump for four more years, and she (De La Isla) supports Joe Biden. I’m proud to be running. I think we’re going to do well. We just have to work hard for every single vote.” Election Day is Tuesday. A new wave of lockdowns and business closings swept across France, Germany and other places in Europe on Wednesday as surging coronavirus infections there and in the U.S. wipe out months of progress against the scourge on two continents. The resurgence and the resulting clampdown sent a shudder through financial markets, and stocks slumped. French President Emmanuel Macron declared a new nationwide lockdown starting Friday, saying the country has been “overpowered by a second wave.” Many doctors had urged the move, given that 58% of the nation’s intensive care units are now taken up by COVID-19 patients. In Germany, Chancellor Angela Merkel announced a four-week shutdown of bars, restaurants and theaters. “We must act, and now, to avoid an acute national health emergency,” she said. Countries such as Switzerland, Italy, Bulgaria and Greece have closed or otherwise clamped down again on nightspots and imposed other restrictions such as curfews and mandatory mask-wearing. Madrid and other parts of Spain banned all but es-

sential travel in and out of their regions. “We are deep in the second wave,” European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said. “I think that this year’s Christmas will be a different Christmas.” In the U.S., where practically every state is seeing a rise in cases, Democratic Gov. Tony Evers of hard-hit Wisconsin has been reduced to pleading with people to stay home, after an order he issued in the spring was overturned by the courts. Illinois’ governor banned indoor dining and drinking in Chicago this week. Other states are likewise considering reimposing restrictions. The virus is blamed for more than 250,000 deaths in Europe and over 226,000 in the U.S., according to the count kept by Johns Hopkins University. The long-feared surge is blamed in part on growing disregard for social distancing and mask-wearing, as well as the onset of cold weather, which is forcing people indoors, where the virus can spread more easily. In the U.S., more than 71,000 people a day are testing positive on average, up from 51,000 two weeks ago. Cases are on the rise in all but two states, Hawaii and Delaware, and deaths are climbing in 39 states, with an average of 805 people dying in the U.S. per day, up from 714 two weeks ago.

Marmaton Valley: Volleyball

Wildcat run ends in state quarterfinals By RICHARD LUKEN The Iola Register

MORAN — Marmaton Valley High’s volleyball season came to an end Wednesday, in the Wildcats’ first foray into the state playoffs since 1979. And with the pieces they will have in place after this year, their head coach is optimistic they won’t have to wait another 41 years to return. Wednesday’s conclusion came amid a flurry of extended runs from visiting Central Christian High, which seized control midway through the third set and never looked back in a 25-18, 22-25, 25-15 and 25-13 victory. The loss, coming in the quarterfinals of the Kansas Class 1A-II State Tournament, ends Marmaton Valley’s season at 20-12. “Of course they’re going to be sad,” head coach Terra Kegler said afterward. “I told the girls, it’s nothing to hang their heads about. It was a good season. I can’t complain about that.” Even better, the Wildcats look as if they’ll be around a while. Marmaton Valley loses a pair of valuable seniors in Makayla Ard and libero Haylee Meiwes, but return a slew of athletic — and now experienced — core group of players. “We’ll still be young next year, too,” Kegler said, noting the number of freshmen and sophomores who contributed this year. The team’s youthful energy may have played against the Wildcats at times, Kegler noted. Central Christian opened the match with a powerful show of force from its towering front line, blasting several kills from the outside and racing to an early 13-4 lead. It took Marmaton Valley a while to find its legs, and the Wildcats rebounded, pulling within 22-16, but no closer in the opening set defeat. The teams went back and forth in the second set, with Central Christian eventually taking the upper hand and forcing Kegler to call timeout with MV trailing 20-14. What followed was the Wildcats’ most impressive play of the night, with Aly Ard scoring three kills and Janae Granere another to pull within 21-20. This time it was the Cou-

gars’ turn to feel the pressure. Central Christian allowed one volley to fall untouched to the floor to pull MV within 2221. Aly Ard’s kill on the next point knotted the score, and extended rallies on the next three points each ended with Central Christian hitting the ball out of bounds on kill attempts to give the Wildcats the set, 25-22. Marmaton Valley rode that wave of momentum into the third set, forging ahead 10-8. But a Cougar timeout led to a game-altering strategy for Central Christian. Instead of continuously pounding kills from the front line, the Cougars frequently sent light taps over the net, beyond the Wildcat blockers, but in front of the back line defenders — a strategy adroitly explained by baseball Hallof-Famer “Wee Willie” Keeler as “Hit ‘em where they ain’t.” “We didn’t adjust very well,” Kegler said. “We talked about moving our coverage up, but we didn’t. We got caught flat-footed. We played hard and believed in ourselves, but when we got down, it was hard to pull them back up.” The Cougars outscored Marmaton Valley 15-5 to end the third set, then kept up the pressure in the clincher. Kegler twice called timeout in attempts to stop the run, but it was to no avail, as Central Christian took an insurmountable 16-6 lead.

Kendall Scharff served up four straight points for the Wildcats after that, but any hopes of a comeback were thwarted with Cougar blocks on three straight points from there. Even with the loss, Marmaton Valley had several standout performances. Aly Ard racked up 15 kills to go with five points. Granere had eight kills and nine points, while Scharff had six kills and five points. Raveyn Kegler had six points and 31 assists. Kayla Ard ended her high school career with seven

kills and three blocks. Haylee Meiwes exited with four points. As an aside, Wednesday’s match laid waste to the notion that facemask-wearing fans inside a half-filled gymnasium could dampen the enthusiasm of high school athletics. Marmaton Valley’s second-set comeback brought a series of raucous cheers from the home crowd, matched by Central Christian’s fans when the Cougars took control late in the match. “Those masks don’t pre-

vent noise,” Kegler chuckled. “It was loud.” As one of the final four Class 1A-II schools still alive, Central Christian will head to Emporia Saturday for a shot at a state title. Marmaton Valley, alas, can look back on its 2020 season with pride, Kegler said. “Nobody thought they’d be substate winners,” she said. “Well, I did. I told the girls never to hang their heads on an accomplishment like this. They had a very successful year. I’m beyond proud of these girls.”

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Former Kansas forward Silvio de Sousa has been charged in a 2020 New Year’s Day altercation a little more than a week after announcing that he was opting out of the upcoming season. Dorothy Kliem, a trial assistant in the Douglas County District Attorney’s office, said that although the felony count of aggravated battery wasn’t filed until Monday, the case was “reviewed prompt-

No attorney for De Sousa was listed in court records, and he could not be reached for comment. He is first scheduled to appear in court Dec. 17. Kansas basketball coach Bill Self said Wednesday in a statement that the investigation was a factor in the

announcement on Oct. 16 that De Sousa was leaving the team to focus on what was initially described as a “personal issues.” “Earlier this fall, Silvio told me that he had been contacted by local authorities regarding his alleged involvement in an incident on New Year’s Eve,” Self said. “He was not aware of the details from that incident until a couple weeks ago, which he then shared with me.

The Iola Register

Working with Ryan Stiles was the greatest thing that’s ever happened to me. He is truly a genius. That word gets passed around a lot but it really does apply in his case. And you know, we would rehearse all week but as far as what he would do when it was just the two of us, that was completely up to him and I just followed his lead. He’s the greatest improviser ever. And you know, you’re foolish if you don’t take the opportunity and seize it and run with it, and a lot of it made it onto the air and the audience ate it up. It was really fun to work with Ryan – and Drew and everybody. It was a great show. ... It was like doing an under-rehearsed play every week. Was Ryan was the only one who would stray from the script?

Yeah, as far as improv, yeah. Ryan was the only one who really left it. I mean, Drew sometimes but that was only because he forgot his lines. Ryan, basically you knew you had one (take) in the can as is. Then he would wing it for the next one and a lot of the times that made it in. It was fun. ... Oh my God, the audience ate it with a spoon.
