Carly Kramer and her steer, Paul

Partnerships pay off in Fair arena Carly Kramer’s partner in the show ring outweighed her by nearly 1,300 pounds. Still, she had no problems getting Paul, the name she’d given her Continental steer, to obey her every command. A slight tug at the rope halter, perhaps a slight tap on the nose, or maybe a stern command was all it took to get Paul to follow the Square B 4-H’er through the show arena at the Allen County Fair. It took months of work to form such a bond, notes Kramer, daughter of Mike and Kelli Kramer of rural Piqua. With no school in the spring, it afforded her extra time to work with her animal, which she planned to use — and sell — at the conclusion of the Fair.

“He can be stubborn as heck,” Kramer admitted. “It’s been fun.”

Kramer has been around animals most of her life, and it shows. She started showing bucket calves her first two years in 4-H, before moving up to the larger animals in year three. (She still shows bucket calves, registering the champion in the age 10-12 division this year.) On top of that, she earned blue ribbons for her steer and for showmanship. For good measure, Kramer also brought home purple ribbons for multiple food entries. Still, her 2020 Fair came to an emotional end with Paul. “It’ll be hard saying goodbye,” she admitted. It became even harder as Kramer showed Paul one last time at the 4-H Premium Livestock Auction, the final event of the week. She’d already sold the animal prior to the sale — a consequence of having a livestock sale in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic — but was able to

2 Allen County Fair • 2020

bring in an additional $1,600 in premiums from a group of 4-H supporters. Still, she struggled to keep her emotions in check. “I told her she had to do that,” mother Kelli explained. “She couldn’t break down in front of the bidders.” A gentle hug followed as the animal was led away, followed by a longer hug with her mother at the sale’s conclusion. “It’ll be OK,” Kelli said afterward. “Of course, we may have a long ride home.” THATCHER Mueller, another youthful veteran, is also well-acquainted with working around animals. The City Slickers 4-H’er showed off his skills with cattle, goats and his hog. Showing swine is easiest, even if the hogs can be a bit more irascible than the others, he laughed. For one thing, the exhibitor doesn’t have to be as exacting when grooming the animal for judges. “Just let ’em go,” he said.

Mueller earned top awards for all three species, and for his bantam chicken in the poultry division. His English steer was named reserve breed champion, he had the supreme dairy goat champion, the reserve meat goat award in showmanship and was overall poultry champion. His Yorkshire hog was the reserve breed champion. Mueller had a top-notch fair outside the show arena as well. His arts exhibit was crowned best of show, and he was level champion in his group in the clothing construction competition. He took full advantage of the extra time afforded by the COVID-19 shutdown. With no school, Mueller spent extra hours in the barn, often twice or more a day. Unlike Kramer, Mueller was nonplussed about selling his steer, which he’d worked with regularly since last October. No emotional attachment? “Nope,” he replied with a sly grin. “That’s dinner.” ALEXA Ellis didn’t have the same level of experience as her older counterparts. The second-year 4-H’er brought a bucket calf to the Fair for the first time in 2020, where getting the animal to obey was a bit more difficult. “I was supposed to do it last year, but it didn’t work out,” she said. She was eager to work with the animal this year, using bits of food to get the young calf to obey her commands. “Sometimes it didn’t want to listen,” she said. Still, Ellis — daughter of Sara and Tim Ellis — adapted quickly, after one of the other parents showed her the proper way to hold the halter rope as she led the animal through the show arena. Ellis earned a blue ribbon for her efforts. She did even better outside the arena. Ellis earned the champion foods entry for her age level, with a bundt cake. “I was happy with it,” she said. “The hardest part was getting it to come out of the pan.” Ellis, an avid photographer, also earned blue and red ribbons for her photo entries. “I just like showing my projects,” she said, even though doing so often means battling nerves. “It’s fun.”

Stablemate sensations Sisters Katelyn and Cassie enjoy a lit tle healthy competition in the horse arena .

Cassie enjoys events such as barrel racing and pole bending. She likes the challenge of racing against her friends. She also enjoys challenging herself, trying to improve her time with each run. But she hesitated to answer when asked if she feels a sense of competition against her sister. This year, they’re in the same age group, Intermediate, age 10-13. “Ummm…” she looked to Katelyn for guidance. “Just say yes, because I always beat you,” Katelyn smirked. Indeed, Katelyn bested her little sister in each of the contests. Katelyn won champion in the halter showmanship contest to her sister’s reserve champion status. Katelyn also picked up a championship ribbon in the barrel racing contest, for which her sister received a red ribbon; and a blue ribbon in pole bending while Cassie took home a red. Katelyn competed in several events for which her sister did not enter, and brought home numerous champion honors. Katelyn and Cassie grew up around horses, learning from their father who used to compete in rodeo events including team roping.

ANDERSON PLUMBING LLC Commercial & Residential

They can’t remember a time when they didn’t ride horses. They ride just about every day and travel throughout the region to compete in rodeos. The past couple of years have been difficult, though, as the family lost two of its older competition horses. Pete died in 2018 and Sam in 2019. Sam was great in the flag racing contest, Katelyn said. “We would smoke everybody,” she recalled. But he developed arthritis and retired some years before he passed. Pete was Katelyn’s favorite horse, and even Cassie was quite fond of him. He could handle just about anything Katelyn asked of him: pole bending, barrel racing, flag racing, even chasing down goats. “He was my little Shorty,” Katelyn said. The day Pete died, both girls were allowed to stay home from school to mourn the loss. “He was special,” Cassie said.

Poultry in motion Levi Meiwes is a bit of a chicken expert at the Allen County Fair. Early Saturday morning, Levi was on hand to give advice to a family of newcomers who weren’t sure where to go or what to do. The rabbit show had been canceled because of a viral infection, Levi explained, and the poultry show had been pushed back a couple of hours. A few minutes later, another family arrived with chickens and ducks. Levi directed them to the appropriate cages around the show barn. Levi enjoys helping the poultry superintendent, J.D. Wilks, set up for the show. Wilks praised Levi’s passion and dedication to the fair and the poultry.

“He knows his stuff,” Wilks said.

Indeed, just a few minutes of conversation with Levi offers an education on chickens: “These are my three birds. Normally I bring a lot more. They’re Red Sex Link, which is a hybrid between a Rhode Island red roster and white rock hen. You can tell their gender at birth by the color of their feathers. “They’re supposed to be the best laying hybrid available. They lay about 320 eggs a year. Your standard breeds are going to lay about 280. They’re feed efficient, so for the amount of feed they eat, they lay a lot more eggs than standard breeds.” Chickens are Levi’s primary fair project, and his future. He’s 17 and will be a senior at Iola High School this fall. He plans to study animal science at Kansas State University and wants to enter the poultry industry in some capacity. Ideally, he’d like to work for a hatchery or perhaps own his own hatchery some day. He grew up around chickens and 4-H. He took over his mother’s chicken flock and now raises 70 hens. He’s been raising chickens for about 10 years. “That’s my main laying flock,” he explains. But in the spring, his flock will grow to about 200 hens and chicks. He’ll raise chicks to sell to others who want to keep chickens, but don’t want the hassle that comes with brooding chicks. Levi provides the heat lamps, chicken feed and all the work needed to raise chickens until they’re almost ready to start laying eggs. “It’s kind of like a jump-start on your own flock,” he said. For a backyard flock, 200 chickens is a lot. But for commercial farms, which can house up to a million or more chickens, Levi’s operation is quite small. He attended meetings by Tyson Foods when the company considered establishing a plant in Coffeyville, in order to learn more about the industry. Chickens are one of the most efficient sources of meat, Levi said.

7 Allen County Fair • 2020

“Agriculture is all about feeding the world, and with the population growing so fast, chickens are much more efficient,” he said. “It takes about 2 pounds of feed to produce a pound of meat, which is incredibly efficient compared to beef. You can get a turnover in a feed bird in 60 to 90 days. They don’t take up as much space. Combined with the fact that they lay eggs, it’s not just a one-time slaughter. Chickens are the gift that keeps giving.” LEVI’S PLANS took a hit from the coronavirus pandemic. In high school, he won the state FFA competition in poultry proficiency and had qualified for the national contest. He’d also won the state 4-H portfolio award for poultry, and the trip for the national contest also was canceled. The fair itself was scaled down because of the virus, and Levi did not enter as many birds as he normally did. The “baby barn” — a collection of exotic and infant farm animals which, in a normal year, shares space with the poultry and rabbit entries — sat empty except

during the poultry show. “It’s definitely been different. Obviously the show is a little smaller, which is unfortunate being one of my last years. But there’s always next year. I have one more left.” He appreciates the skills he’s learned in 4-H, especially with public speaking. He’s very comfortable speaking in public now, although he considers himself somewhat of an introvert. But come across him at the poultry barn at the fair, and you would never know that. His face lights up and he’s eager to share his knowledge about chickens.

4-H’ers corral their swine entries at the Allen County Fair.

Hog Heaven On Thursday night the 2020 4-H hog show drew a substantial crowd and showcased some intense competition among the youth showing off their prized pigs. Carly Dreher led the way by winning grand champion in the first round of competition, wherein her intense focus was clear in the show ring. She’d brought along with her three pigs: Banana peel, Auto and Bre. In terms of showing animals, “I kind of grew up around it, and I’ve been doing it my whole life,” she said. And with parents and a sister also encouraging her to get involved, she soon “developed a passion for it, and for the ag industry.”

Dreher’s plans are to eventually attend a community college, hopefully on a livestock judging scholarship, and then move on to K-State.

“4-H teaches you a lot of life lessons,” she added. In particular, “responsibility and leadership skills.” “It’s just been really good for growing up.” Along with many of the other participants, Dreher also shared a few factoids about her charges. “Pigs are actually the third smartest animal in the world,” she said. “And another fact about pigs: they can’t sweat!” Dreher’s passion for livestock showing and judging also has her traveling extensively. “We travel around southeast Kansas showing everything,” she said. “Last year, we even went to Richmond, Indiana.” “It’s a lot of traveling and a lot of miles,” Dreher noted. “But it’s all worth it in the end.” Other competitors at the show included Rohan and Moira Springer, who’d brought about their pigs Torpedo and Pancake, who can perform several tricks. This was Rohan’s fourth year of showing and Moira’s first. “It’s just a nice experience to have with your pig,” said Rohan.

“It’s fun and exciting and always a challenge.” Rohan’s favorite pig to ever show was nicknamed “Curious George.” Rohan said the hardest part about showing pigs is simply “getting it to the fair grounds and getting it off the trailer.” He added he was encouraged to show pigs during his first year in City Slickers, since the group traditionally does “a lot of programs.” Not to be left out, Moira also volunteered some pearls of wisdom, noting that for example, “pigs poop and pee in the same spot!” “I like sausage, but I don’t really like bacon,” she reflected in relation to the fruits of her labor. Kyser and Brody Nemecek were giving their pigs a shower while chatting with the Register. “Raising pigs goes back five generations” in their family, said Brody. “We recently found a trophy from 1902 at the state fair.”

Rohan Springer

“We’ve been at it ever since we could walk and talk,” Brody said. When asked what’s appealing about showing livestock, he remarked, “Honestly, it’s the animals. They each have their own personalities.” It’s like “learning a new group of people.” Two of the “people” they’d brought along included pigs Shakira and J-Lo. Kaizer highlighted the intelligence and social nature of pigs as well, saying, “They can tell who feeds them, and who takes care of them.” He also noted how, when pigs squeal, this is often “just them talking to each other.” Tucker Wrestler was preparing to participate in his second competition this year, and had brought along his pigs Pat and Blue, two littermates who are inseparable. As for why he shows, “it’s just fun,” he said. Though he also added he’s not the biggest fan of pigs. Wrestler said he tends to get nervous before a show, but was looking forward to trying to win a purple ribbon for the second year in a row. Kyron Kegler also said he gets nervous before competing, though was all smiles while preparing his pig Charlie for the show ring. “Right here is the ham,” he said while pointing. “Here is the loin.” When asked what’s the hardest part of showing, he said “training them, walking them and having them keep their heads up.” “They also love marshmallows and graham crackers,” he grinned.

Zoi, left, and Gracie Yoho show off their winning Allen County Fair entries

Perseverance pays off In a year unlike any other, Prairie Rose 4-H’ers Zoi and Gracie Yoho did their best to go with the flow. Even so, the Yoho sisters saw their preparations not only for the Allen County Fair tipped on end due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Zoi, who graduated this year from Marmaton Valley High School, rattled off the list of missed experiences because of the pandemic. “I was planning on going on a senior trip, prom and all that,” she said. “Graduation was going to be big. And within a couple of days, they say, ‘Oh, that’s all canceled.’” So she shifted her sights to the Fair. She

had a number of projects in the works, from home environment, arts and crafts and food. But more than that, she was ready to experience the other parts of the Allen County Fair. “I was wanting to go to the rodeo and hang out with my friends,” she said. That went for naught when the rodeo was among the list of canceled Fair activities. By the time the curtain rose, the Fair was limited solely to 4-H’ers and their projects. “This year kind of sucked,” she concluded. “But I’m still going to miss it.” Yoho’s other big adjustment came when she was hired on as a summer worker at Monarch Cement Company.

15 Allen County Fair • 2020

“It got crazy trying to get everything done,” Zoi acknowledged. Still, she brought home plenty of hardware, including having the grand champion fiber arts entry, and purple ribbons for her floral display, clothing buymanship entries and for her dog. She also took home the reserve champion award for dog obedience — finishing just behind Gracie. GRACIE’s Fair Week was equally as daunting, and just as successful. On top of her dog obedience crown, she had the reserve dog showman trophy and reserve champion home environment project and foods exhibit. She also was a champion in buymanship. While she has three more years left to compete in the county fair, the sophomore has trepidation as well. “I usually do whatever my sisters do,” she said. “Since I’m going to be at school alone, and doing this on my own, it’s going to be more stressful.”

GOT YOUR GOAT Undaunted by the threat of COVID-19, this year’s 4-H goat show was a rousing success, with young people across multiple age groups excitedly showing off all the hard work they’d put into their animals. Shelby Sprague is a member of Prairie Rose and has been showing for the last four years.

“I don’t mind the work,” she said. “It’s also really good family time.” “We raise our own goats. We don’t buy them,” which makes the labor involved even greater. “It’s awesome to see what you get out of working with your animal,” Sprague added, as she prepared her goats Louise, Highlander and Hereford for the show ring. When asked about the most challenging part of raising goats, she noted how “they get sick all the time. People starting out don’t really know that.”

Goats also require a lot of personalized attention. “Some don’t like their back legs touched, or their faces touched,” Sprague explained. “You have to get to know them.”

Despite all the effort, however, “I wouldn’t give it up,” she said. Natalea Elmenhorst is also a member of Prairie Rose who’s been showing the past four years. “I like the animals,” she said, and “I like showing sheep because they’re harder” than other animals, providing a greater challenge.

Finding hope after loss Cooper Gillespie of Logan Pals 4-H Club learned a lot about grief this year. Just a month before the Allen County Fair, his horse, Chick, passed away unexpectedly. He had planned to show Chick at the fair, and the horse show is his favorite event. He also lost a sheep that had been his 4-H project this year, but that wasn’t quite as much of a loss. He’s lost sheep before. And he had other sheep and goats to show at this year’s fair. But losing his horse was difficult.

“It hurt. I just really like horses,” he said. “My horse was a lot of fun to work with.” Cooper learned his love of horses from his grandfather, David Gillespie. His grandfather’s history with the fair goes back decades. In

previous years, he was one of the organizers of the rodeo event that brought thousands of people to Allen County each summer. But there was no rodeo this year. Many of the traditional fair events were canceled because of the coronavirus pandemic. That was a different kind of loss, Cooper said. In another year, he would have competed in more events. Instead, he showed only sheep and goats. Class sizes were smaller, and very few spectators were in the stands. Instead of shaking hands with the judges at the start of a class, they’d fist bump.

Still, Cooper said he was glad the fair continued despite the challenges. It’s nice to have some sense of normalcy, after so much loss. “It was a pretty tough summer,” he said.
