WELCOME HOME A letter from the Iola Chamber of Commerce
Thank you for picking up a copy of our Allen County Community Guide! The Iola Area Chamber of Commerce and Tourism has partnered with The Iola Register to create the product you hold in your hands, and we’re very proud of it.
Our goal for this guide is to provide an overview of the amazing business community in Allen County and to highlight what makes this little corner of the world unique. Allen County remains strong for many reasons, and our business community plays a significant role in our success.
Whether it’s by offering valuable goods and services, providing employment, sponsoring a local tee-ball team, or helping spearhead local efforts, we recognize how much local businesses contribute.
The Allen County Community Guide celebrates these businesses and helps you recognize the faces behind them. After all, that’s one of the perks of living in southeast Kansas: we’re all neighbors. And most of the time, we’re even friendly!
For those of you new to the Chamber, we serve as a business leadership organization for Iola and surrounding rural communities. The Chamber supports and fosters business growth and local tourism by increasing our members’ visibility through social media, publications and business and community events.
The Chamber has experienced wonderful growth over the past year, with membership increasing 30 percent. New community events have been added, such as the July 4th Pedal Parade and an Easter Egg Hunt. Our Trunk or Treat event saw over 1,500 children participate, and our Santa House on Iola’s square had over 1,000 attendees. More than twenty businesses participated in our annual Christmas Block Party.
EDITORS:
Susan Lynn and Tim Stauffer
We are proud of the many strides taken this past year and the ways we are better able to serve our community. Several improvements are in the works, and we are excited to see what 2023 will bring. As we plan for the coming months and years, we keep these broad goals at the forefront while we work with other businesses, organizations and stakeholders, ever increasing advancements to our area. Our efforts remain focused on:
Helping our local businesses grow and prosper. Continuing development of our local amenities and draw new attractions.
Pursuing orderly expansion and development in all community segments.
Increasing job opportunities.
Contributing to the community’s overall economic stability.
Please don’t hesitate if there’s anything we here at the Chamber can do for you, your business or our community. Here’s to working–and progressing–together!

INSIDE
MORAN
Situated among fields and stars
Located at the junction of US Hwy 54 and US Hwy 59, this small rural town traces its roots back to 1881, when the Missouri Pacific Railroad Company built a railroad line through the eastern edge of Allen County. They called it Morantown. In 1889 the town’s name changed to Moran, and the name has stuck since.
Moran calls itself a little piece of heaven nestled in southeast Kansas, and we couldn’t agree more. Its thriving K-12 Marmaton Valley school system and agricultural community remain the heartbeat of the community.
Services include a public library, a scenic park, and 54 Fitness, the town’s fitness center. Local businesses include Chancy’s Grill and Shake, which has been serving up delicious burgers for over thirty years, a fuel station, childcare, Main Street Styles salon, Personal Service Insurance and Moran Locker, now in its fourth generation of ownership. The Iola Area Chamber of Commerce is proud to partner with the following businesses serving Moran and the surrounding area.
Moran Manor-Skilled Nursing by Americare
Moran Manor is an experienced skilled nursing facility for both long- and short-term care. Its staff believe all visitors and long-term residents will find a home in their facility. Located on Highway 54, the location is easy to find and boasts a large floor plan, experienced care and an intimate community.

ELSMORE
Elsmore township, located close to Cedar Creek, is a lovely small town that at one time was a thriving center of trade. Nowadays the small population of 50 quietly enjoys their beautiful rural setting, which still has an active railway, a bar called Slim’s, grain silos and a Methodist Church.
Elsmore Day, the community’s annual celebration, began in 1969 and continues to unite the town each September. Sponsored by Elsmore Ruritan Club, the day kicks off with a parade, which routinely features the Marmaton Valley High School
SAVONBURG
Savonburg, like many smaller rural towns located on the Kansas-Missouri-Texas Railroad line, has slowly dwindled in population since the 1960s. Now home to approximately 109 residents (and an impressive library), Savonburg had a large Swedish population when it was founded in 1879. The town even had a Swedish concert band in the early days.

GAS
When natural gas was discovered here in the summer of 1898, E.K. Taylor sold 60 acres of his farm to some spelter companies and later subdivided the remainder into lots, which was the beginning of “Gas City.” Today, the small town hosts a number of excellent businesses and continues to thrive. The Chamber is proud to partner with the following businesses serving Gas and the surrounding area.
Quality Automotive Services
Quality Automotive Services, Inc. offers foreign and domestic auto repair. A full line auto repair shop, owner Bob Cook purchased the business from the late John “Punk” and Alzina Cress in 2021.
John and Alzina opened the auto repair business in Gas in 2008. John did the repairs, and Alzina handled the administrative side. Cook joined the team a year later and has been there ever since.

Piqua State Bank - Bank of Gas
The Piqua State Bank was organized in 1910 by L. C. Neimann. During that same year the Farmers State Bank was opened in Piqua by George Wille. In 1914, the Wille family purchased the Piqua State Bank and merged the two banks under the name of the Piqua State Bank. John Wille, George Wille’s son, owned and managed the bank for the next 50 years.
The bank was purchased by Galen L. (Jack) Curry following his retirement from the Army. The Curry family has owned and operated the bank to this day. The bank is now the only locally owned and operated bank in Woodson and Allen counties. Several Curry family members are employed by the bank, and the bank continues to grow and prosper.
Piqua State Bank’s mission is to maintain the safety of the depositor’s money, maximize profits for the stockholders, and have a positive impact on the community.

LaHARPE
Platted in 1885 as a stop on the St. Louis, Fort Scott and Wichita Railroad, LaHarpe was named after LaHarpe, Illinois simply because the engineer on the first train lived in LaHarpe, Illinois.
Now with a population of around 500, LaHarpe was at one point several times that size, as natural gas was discovered in the vicinity at the beginning of the 20th century, creating the town’s boom days. At one point, LaHarpe featured several zinc smelters, some ranking among the largest in the world.

ACARF/Second Chance
Allen County Animal Rescue Facility is a non-profit no-kill animal shelter/rescue in LaHarpe. The shelter was created through a grassroots effort of citizens who wanted more for area animals in need. Prior to the opening of ACARF in 2010, dogs and cats in the Allen County area who were unwanted, stray, neglected, or abused had little hope. If impounded, they were kept in the back of a veterinary clinic for three days and then (if not claimed by an owner) euthanized.

IOLA OFFERS MORE THAN MOST A letter from the mayor
On behalf of the City Council and the Iola community, I am pleased to welcome you to the city of Iola. We hope you find Iola to be a friendly, dynamic and engaging place to visit as well as conduct business.
Iola is fortunate to have a generous number of volunteers who make the community what it is today. Whether it is organizing our yearly Farm City Days, serving on one of our city’s special committees, or raising funds to develop a splash park, our residents get the job done. Because residents are encouraged to be involved, they have a say in the vision and future of our city. This creates a sense of ownership and pride.
Iola is an energetic city with a vibrant downtown historic district. Prestigious buildings display their heritage, but they also contain modern and technologically advanced businesses. Iola’s housing options are on the cusp of growing, with plans to convert three recently closed elementary schools into apartments. Cedarbrook Housing Addition in north Iola is in the works and will feature a series of market-rate duplexes. And a private developer will build a few new housing units near our local G&W grocery store. A lack of housing is a main reason why communities like ours struggle. Here in Iola, we are doing all we can to focus on addressing the issue and are excited to see those efforts come to fruition.
Iola’s new elementary school opened in August 2022 and provides a state-of-the-art learning environment for Iola’s most important asset, our youth. Allen Community College, celebrating its centennial this year, remains a strong asset to our community. It attracts a diverse range of students from all over the country, and the world! We invite you to attend one of Allen’s sporting events for an evening of great competition.
The economic development team comprised of Iola, Allen County, Iola Industries, Thrive Allen County and various civic organizations remain dedicated to building our community for a stronger future. Iola recently partnered with Allen County to develop land around our local airport to create an industrial park, and our city has certified 80 acres for future growth as well.
Our various parks, frisbee golf course, Happy Tails Dog Park, and Lehigh and MoPac Trail systems remain popular outdoor attractions for our community. Iola offers many activities for all ages through our recreation department, and the town features a variety of restaurants and a movie theater for date night. If live performances are your preference, look into attending a show at the Bowlus Fine Arts Center. Local talent can be seen by attending a show at Iola’s Community Theater.
And to cap it all off, Iola is home to Kansas’ newest state park, Lehigh Portland State Park. Its pristine lake and trail system are stunning, and its creation is another testament to the power of an active and involved community.
Iola really does offer more than most. We’re small, but we’re proud of our past and excited for our future. It’s an honor to have you visit, and we hope to see you again soon!
Steve C. French

Home of Lehigh Portland State Park
In what may be Iola’s biggest news of the century, Lehigh Portland State Park was declared official by state officials this spring. The new state park, Kansas’ 28th, will soon be the calling card not just for Iola, but for all of Allen County.
Iola is also known as home of the nation’s largest town square, which the bulk of the town’s businesses surround. In the middle of the square is the Allen County Courthouse.
Iola was founded in 1859. It was named after Iola Colborn, wife of Josiah, who built one of the town’s first frame houses. The town is now a thriving city of 5,396.
Allen Community CollegeCelebrating 100 years
Allen Community College was established in 1923 as Iola Junior College. The college was designed as an extension of the high school, primarily to serve the students within the district and was located on the third floor of the Iola High School. The first year’s enrollment was 93 students. In 1965, the college became a countywide community college and was officially named Allen County Community Junior College.
Top left: The Iola Municipal Band was formed in 1871 and carries the distinction of the longest-running municipal band west of the Mississippi River. Weekly band concerts run in June and July and begin at 8 p.m. each Thursday at the bandstand gazebo on Iola’s square.

eyear later in February of 1966, voters of Allen County
Just one year later in February of 1966, Allen County voters approved a $1.5 million bond issue to construct a campus on the nothern edge of Iola. The first classes were held there in August 1969.
In 1980, college trustees shortened the college’s name to Allen County Community College. To accommodate a rapid rise in enrollment, trustees approved the construction of a new residential hall, Winter Hall, completed in 1983. In 1985, the college built an 1,800-square-foot activities building for indoor sports and recreation. In 1989, a new fitness center was built on the west side of the activities building.
Allen Community College now enrolls approximately 2,500 students in the programs offered on the Iola and Burlingame campuses. The college currently has over 1,000 degree seeking and 602 non-degree seeking students enrolled in online learning– the non-degree seeking students are mostly in high school. As a percentage, 76.9% of students are enrolled in some form of distance education, which includes online learning.
As it celebrates its centennial, Allen is proud to continue a long history of serving students in our community!

Iola Insurance Associates was formed in 2002 when Richard and Robert Gill, brothers from Cherryvale, purchased the Jack Brown Agency. The two brothers, who owned five insurance offices in southeast Kansas at the time, had the experience and the knowledge. They were joined by Debbie Taiclet, an Iola native. It was a recipe for success in the independent insurance industry.
After his brother’s passing, Richard Gill continued to own the offices until 2019, when he retired. The company continues to thrive, welcoming the next generation, Lee Gill, Richard’s son, who took over ownership. In 2016, Chrissy Womelsdorf joined the Iola office. The Iola office continues to grow in personal and commercial insurance, offering the best customer service they can provide. Congratulations on 21 years of serving Iola and the surrounding area!

Along with the increase in services, Iola Pharmacy’s staff has grown as well, including second generation pharmacists Morgan Karmann, daughter of Jeff Dieker, and Shane Walden, son of Bill Walden. HUMBOLDT
Humboldt, located 8 miles south of Iola, is a 168-year-old community that has taken a unique view of their small town. Town leaders created a bold and motivated group, calling themselves “A Bolder Humboldt.”’ Since 2016 the group has invested financially and creatively to entice bold and exciting new businesses to come to town. Recent success stories are Humboldt Fitness, the newly renovated Our Market grocery store, and dynamic food offerings like The HoneyBee Brunchery and Perrenoud’s Cocktail Bar.
Around town, visitors and community members alike can enjoy shaved ice, candy confections, food trucks and even a glass of high quality or hard to find bourbon at the Hitching Post. Like to camp or travel by RV? Try Humboldt’s Base Camp for a peaceful stay. In short, as stated in the 2022 New York Times article, Humboldt has become a “must see” community. To find even more details about Humboldt tourism, please check out The Allen County Tourism Guide, due to publish in fall of 2023.

New Wave Broadband
New Wave Broadband’s origins are found in the story of Harry Lee Sr., who in 1976 created LaHarpe Communications. It started out as a phone company, but with the advent of the Internet, the needs of people have changed. This is why the company evolved into New Wave Broadband around 2014.
Branching into additional online services, New Wave provides cutting edge technology with the same excellent quality and exceptional customer service. Staff make sure customers are taken care of by going above and beyond in all concerns; they know how to take care of the customers and treat them as the important individuals they are.
Find their office at 109 W. 6th St. in LaHarpe. Feel free to visit anytime during business hours: Monday to Friday, from 8 a.m to noon and 1-5 p.m.

TLC Garden Center
Conveniently located on Highway 54 in LaHarpe, TLC Garden Center is a gardener’s paradise. It’s also a true family business, owned and operated by Savannah and Levi Flory. You’re also likely to see their girls in the store as well. It takes many hands (and a few green thumbs) to keep a business like this humming along!
TLC Garden Center was opened as TLC Greenhouse by Savannah’s mother, Corinna Heard, in 2000. It was during a trip to the greenhouse as a sixth-grader that Savannah became interested in the family business.
Savannah earned a degree in horticulture from Kansas State University, helping continue the business after her mother’s death in 2006. She returned to TLC with husband Levi in 2007 to run the business full time. The Florys purchased TLC from Savannah’s father, John Heard, in 2009, changing its name officially to TLC Garden Center.
Over the years, the garden center has thrived, winning an “Existing Business of the Year” award from the Kansas Small Business Development Center in 2011 and adding a new retail center and two greenhouses in 2020.
