Iola High’s Averie Sharon will return this season to lead the Fillies’ distance runners.
Ready for the long run It’s not hard to figure out where the strength lies with Iola High’s track team. Just take a look at both IHS boys and girls highly decorated cross country teams that qualified for state last fall. “We have some talented distance runners,” head coach Dana Daugharthy noted. One such runner is senior Jack Adams, who narrowly missed out on a state medal in the 3200-meter run as a sophomore (he finished
Adams also were part of the IHS state qualifying harrier squad. “I’m looking for big things from them,” Daugharthy said. Junior Brett Willis will give the IHS squad a spark in the sprinting distances. “He didn’t qualify for state two years ago (as a freshman) but he was really close,” Daugharthy said. “I’m excited to see how he’ll do.” Fellow junior Kobe Lord also will compete in the

Josh Kaufman has some unfinished business on the golf course this season. The Iola High senior came up just short of earning a bid to the state tournament as a sophomore, missing out by five strokes at the regional tournament that year. His hopes for redemption, of course, went for naught in 2020 when the golf season was canceled. Fast forward to this spring, and Kaufman is back on the links, ready to give it another whirl. “I think he’ll do well,” Mustang golf coach Nick McAnulty said. “He’s been working hard at it.” Aside from Kaufman, there’s not much experience on the IHS roster. Newcomers Chris Holloway, Kendall Glaze and Xander Sellman have signed up this spring.

Chris Weide is confident his Iola High softball team will pitch well and play solid defense this season. “But most of all, we are thankful we get to compete,” Weide said. The Fillies will suit up 20 players in 2021, including three who saw action the last time IHS took to the softball diamond in 2019. Junior Reece Murry pitched as a freshman, while Jenna Miller pitched as a sophomore, and will be counted on to lead this year’s Fillies squad again. Senior Lauryn Holloway, catcher, also played as a sophomore. “Those three will bring some varsity experience that most of our other girls don’t have,” Weide said. “We are looking to them to be vocal leaders and to lead by example as well.” There are others who should make an impact this year. Senior Kailey Schinstock has put in plenty of work outside of school on her overall game. She’ll be stationed at first base and add a potent bat to the Fillies lineup. On the other side of the diamond, junior Jenna Curry also should be counted on both for her offensive production, and for her defense, Weide said. “We will be looking for
Iola High’s Reece Murry returns to pitch in 2021. Kailey to do big things for us,” Weide said. “Jenna has a great swing and plays a very good defensive third base.” THE PROMISE of a successful run in 2019 was disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic that shut down the season before it started. Weide said it’s up to coaches and players to overcome the lost time. “Softball is like any other sport,” he said. “If you are not continuously working on the skills needed to be successful in that sport, your skills will diminish and not improve. You need a glove, ball and bat in your hand and be on the field to improve as a softball player. “That was not an option last season for the players.” But Iola is not unique in
that situation, he added. “The best teams will overcome that,” Weide said. And the layoff isn’t cutting down on his optimism. “My expectation for the upcoming season is to compete every day in practice and against every team we match up against,” Weide said. “We have a very solid team this season. I know we will pitch well and play great defense. If we can put the bat on the ball and score some runs we could win some games. “With this team I think it is not about who we play, but how we play,” he continued. “We can compete with anybody around if we play to our potential. But most of all, we are thankful we get to compete.”

Mustangs serve up talent It isn’t taking long for Iola High’s tennis team to hit the ground running. With an extended basketball playoff run, three of the Mustangs missed the first week of practice, aside from a few hitting sessions. Yet, even with their truncated practice schedule, Iola’s tennis team shows plenty of court savvy and talent, head coach Chris Belknap said. The five-member team, at least at the start of the season, will include Riccardo Barbarossa as the team’s top (and only) singles player, while Landon Carson and Patrick Weaver will serve as the No. 1 doubles team. Sam Fager is joined by newcomer Damiean Dryden on the No. 2 doubles team. Like Dryden, Barbarossa, a foreign exchange student out of Italy, has played tennis recreationally but not as an organized event, Belknap said. “He’s played some with his

Basketball teammates Carson and Weaver both sought each other out as doubles partners even before the season started. And like Barbarossa, the duo has meshed quickly. “They communicate well while they’re playing,” Belknap said. “They communicate when they’re playing, and they seem to work off each other. Iola High’s Drake DeLaTorre squares up to bunt during a recent round of batting practice.
Latta takes helm at IHS A new era is afoot for Iola High’s baseball program. Mark Percy, the only head coach in IHS baseball history, turned in his last lineup card two seasons ago. (The 2020 campaign, of course, never happened.) In his place is Ryan Latta, a former Mustang player who served as an assistant coach under Percy the past three years. “I’m not nervous,” Latta said in a preseason practice. “I’m sure as it gets closer, the nerves will come.” If there’s a sense of comfort, it’s that the Mustangs will have a stable of talented pitchers eager to silence opposing bats. “If there’s one thing we have, it’s lots of pitching,” Latta said. “We have several guys who can go up there and
throw strikes.” A pair of seniors were among the few to see much varsity action as underclassmen. Nathan Louk pitched for Iola as a sophomore and will do so again this season. When not on the mound, he’ll be in the lineup either as a shortstop or man one of the outfield positions. Bradyn Cole also will pitch for the Mustangs, or find himself at third base. Senior Eli Smith and junior Ryker Curry should find themselves in the mix when Latta decides who to start, or to bring out of the bullpen. A pair of sophomores, Jarrett Herrmann and Carter Hutton, also have shown promise on the mound. Command is essential to successful pitching, Latta
said, to stay ahead in the count and force hitters to work on the pitcher’s terms, and not vice versa. Likewise, throwing strikes aids the defense in that defenders can expect balls to be put in play at a regular clip. “It’s hard to keep things going when you’re constantly behind in the count, 3-0, 3-1, 3-2,” Latta said. “I think we can do very well on the mound, and we’ll be alright defensively. It’ll come down to what we can do with our bats.” Latta is less certain, at least for now, who will bat where in the lineup. “We’ve got a few guys who can steal bases, and there are guys who can do a good job at the plate. It’s a matter of getting the guys experience.”

Lady Cubs build on softball legacy HUMBOLDT — There are a few certainties in life these days. Death, taxes, and Humboldt High softball challenging for another state playoff berth. Despite not playing a game in two years — last season was wiped off the calendar because of the COVID-19 pandemic — Humboldt returns several key members for the six-time defending Tri-Valley League champion softball squad. And, much to the chagrin of Humboldt’s opponents, most of that returning strength comes straight up the middle. Brooklyn Ellis, who took over as Humboldt’s ace pitcher as a freshman, returns for her junior season ready to see her repertoire grow even more. ‘“Brooklyn has played quite a bit of summer ball,” Humboldt head coach Brad

Piley said. Likewise, Isabelle Murrow, Humboldt’s starting center fielder in 2019, earned all-league honors as a sophomore. She’s ready for even greater heights for her senior campaign. “Izzy can hit the ball well,” Piley said. “She’s a good power hitter.” Starting shortstop Kirstyn Murrow, a junior, will give Humboldt plenty of speed at the top of the line. Karley Wools, another junior, will take the field at second base. “She’s another good athlete.” If there’s one drawback, it’s that Piley, at least initially, is uncertain who will handle Humboldt’s catching duties. “We still have a lot to figure out,” he said. And there’s also the question of what could have been. The 2020 Humboldt squad, spearheaded by the now graduated Winter Snyder, was primed for a lengthy postseason run when the season was called off because of COVID. “We would have had a really good chance” to make it to state last year, Piley noted. “A player
like Winter is hard to replace, but we’ve got some hitters who can hit the ball.”

Humboldt baseball rebuild afoot HUMBOLDT — As the late A. Bartlett Giamatti famously wrote, baseball is designed to break your heart. Turns out not playing baseball was even tougher. Humboldt High’s baseball team was primed for another extended postseason run in 2020, coming off a fourth-place finish at state the year prior, and loaded with a deep and talented senior class. Then a pandemic came and
“It was hard on me, but it was devastating for the kids,” Cub head coach Mike Miller noted, particularly because none of Humboldt’s seniors went on to play baseball collegiately. Despite working with the smallest and leastexperienced roster in Miller’s coaching tenure at HHS, he carries high hopes the 2021 Humboldt nine can continue the school’s storied baseball legacy. “I’m excited about it,” he said. “This is a chance to work with a bunch of kids who haven’t had a lot of experience before. And it gives these kids an opportunity to play and contribute.” A pair of juniors are the only Cubs who have seen

For example, this is the first time Miller’s ever entered a season with no established front runner to play catcher. “We had two seniors last year who could catch, but we didn’t get a chance to get anybody else any experience beneath them,” he noted. “We have a few guys who have caught a little bit when they were younger, but it’s a very important position.”

Athletes back on track HUMBOLDT — Humboldt High should offer a successful track and field season in 2021, but Eric Carlson can’t help but wonder what if. “We lost out on a potentially great season last year with some of the seniors we had,” Carlson said, noting the 2020 campaign was a no-go amid the COVID-19 pandemic. But more importantly for this year’s athletes was the lost opportunity to develop. “But everyone else has the same problem,” Carlson said. “We are fortunate enough to have a good group of seniors and juniors with experience and leadership qualities.” Leading the charge will be senior Drake Harrington and junior Drew Wilhite in running events. Harrington already has signed a letter of intent to run track and field for Neosho County Community College. He’ll run the 400 and 800

meters, “and we’ll probably put him in the mile (1600 meters) because that’s what he’ll probably run in college,” Carlson said. Meanwhile, Wilhite may be the closest thing Carlson can compare to a Swiss army knife. While Wilhite, who qualified for state in cross country last fall, can be expected to thrive at longer distance races, Carlson may run him in shorter races, too. Junior Colton Johnson will compete in running events, as well as the high jump. Senior Blake Walker came on strong in throwing events late in his sophomore year. “I’m excited to see what he’ll do this season,” Carlson said. On the girls side, Jessica Myers, senior, and Lulu Melendez, sophomore, are skilled runners. “Madi White and Taylor Korte are both strong middistance runners who should
be anchors for those events,” Carlson said. Senior Zoey Wilson has been to state two years so far in running events, and likely would have gone a third had there been a season last year. Another senior, Jada Dangerfield, hasn’t competed in track since she was in middle school, and will likely compete in throwing events. “We were messing around in practice and she had probably one of the farthest shot put throws I’ve had,” Carlson said. And that was without worrying about technique. “Once she gets it figured out, she will definitely do well.” Sophomore Ella Lassman is expected to step up quickly. Maddox Johnson, on the boys side, also did well in the eighth grade in the discus. “We’ve got a good group of kids,” Carlson said. “We’ve just got to build on what they do and develop them a little.”

MORAN — Marmaton Valley High’s track team returns a number of athletes who have already made their mark, even without a season in 2020. Senior Kaylee Becker qualified for state in the 200-meter dash when she was a freshman. She likely would have returned as a sophomore, until her state bid was derailed by a false start penalty at regionals. “Of course last year was wiped out, but she appears to be ready to get back at it,” Smith said. Becker also may do some jumping events along with the sprints. Two other seniors will be counted on for leadership as well. “It’s been a good week of practice,” Mills said. “The girls are learning their positions. We’re trying to get them fundamentally sound. We’re going to have to work out the kinks.” The Wildcats won’t have much experience to lean on, particularly early in the
season. Senior Kayla Ard and junior Kendall Scharff are penciled into the starting lineup, much as they were two years ago, the last time Marmaton Valley saw the field. Ard will be counted on to pitch, or play pretty much anywhere she’s needed, Mills
said. “She’s such a versatile athlete,” Mills said. Scharff, meanwhile, pitched as a freshman two years ago. The third veteran on the roster will be out of commission until late April, at the earliest. Aly Ard, junior, underwent
surgery after basketball season and will be out four to six weeks. When healthy, Aly Ard will play at shortstop or catcher. As for the rest of the roster, Mills has an intriguing blend of youth and talent to work with. Sophomores Roslyn Houk, Bailey LaRue, Mary Brown, Tayven Sutton and Brooklyn Adams will likely find key roles in 2021. “I know they do have a little bit of experience,” Mills said. Mills begins her second stint as head coach at Marmaton Valley, having last been in the Wildcat dugout during the 2013 spring season.

COLONY — Roland Weir has been a part of the nascent Crest High baseball program since its infancy. He remembers the early days, when the Lancers had barely enough players to fill out a lineup card. But with those early growing pains, Crest was busy stocking its youth leagues, bringing up a generation of young ballplayers ready to make their mark. If the future isn’t here, it’s awfully close in 2021. “We struggled our first two years,” Weir said. “We just didn’t have much experience. But we should be strong in the infield and really strong in the outfield. Depth is the key. We have several younger kids who won’t get to start, but I’ll have no trouble putting them into the lineup if we need them. We’re fine there.” A pair of seniors have been starting since they were freshmen, Tyson Hermreck and Kobey Miller. Hermreck sported a .360
Crest senor Tyson Hermreck batting average his sophomore season; Miller also batted .300. They’ll be joined by classmate Stratton McGhee, who hit at a .340 clip two years ago. A number of supporting
players in the past are expected to play larger roles on the field. Tucker Yocham and Bryson Goodell both have shown promise. Another senior, Andrew McAdam, “is looking good as well,” Weir said. Sophomore Holden Barker has caught Weir’s eye with his hitting potential. “The ball really comes off the bat,” Weir said. Others who could step in immediately are sophomores Avery Blaufus, Stetson Setter and freshmen Jack White, Karter Miller, Rogan Weir and Ryan Golden.

Lady Lancers offer depth COLONY — Casey Cook anticipates having to make some tough decisions when she fills out her lineup card this season. She wouldn’t want it any other way. The Crest High softball coach has, for the first time in the young program’s history, enough depth to allow her to be flexible, and somewhat discriminating, when deciding who goes where. “It’s very comforting to have to sit back and think about how I want to set the lineup,” Cook said. “These are nice problems to have.
Crest High junior Lonna Ayers We’re really in a pretty good position going forward.” Leading the way will be Crest’s sole senior on the roster, Aubree Holloran,
who can play just about everywhere on the diamond. “She can pitch, catch, play shortstop, left field,” Cook said. “It just depends on where we need her most.” Junior Lindsay Godderz will be one of Crest’s primary pitching leaders, while classmate Anna Hermreck played first base as a freshman. Juniors Vivian Noah and Lonna Ayers will be counted on for leadership as well. Crest also sports a number of incoming freshmen and sophomores who have been constants on the diamond since their T-ball days.

Crest track back for more COLONY — Crest High’s students have reached some lofty heights with their athletic endeavors this year. The Lancer football team rolled through an undefeated regular season. Cross country runner Ursula Billings meanwhile, finished off her cross country career by finishing seventh at state. Now, many of those same faces will hope to add some track and field hardware to their respective trophy cases. The 16-member roster is loaded with talent at each grade level, head coach Zach Mason said. “Hopefully, being successful in the other stuff
Crest High sophomore Karter Miller can help them mentally, and translate to success on the track,” Mason said. The aforementioned
Billings already has. She qualified for the state track meet as an underclassman in the 3200-meter run. Fellow seniors Stratton McGhee and Kobey Miller were stalwarts on the football field and on the basketball court. Now, McGhee will compete in sprints and the long jump. Miller will compete in the javelin. Junior Lindsay Godderz has shown improvement each year in the discus and javelin.

SCC thinclads go for gold LE ROY — Even with a lost track and field season in 2020 due to the COVID-19 shuttering of schools across the country, Southern Coffey County High track and field coach Jeff True is optimistic he has enough returning talent to make some noise in 2021. Twenty athletes will suit up in the blue and gold this spring, including three seniors and six juniors
who saw limited action as underclassmen. On the girls side, Emersyn Hall will compete in sprints and javelin, while Kyra Ohl specializes in throwing events — specifically shot put and discus. The sole senior boy is Dalton Harmon, who should line up for a number of running events, True said. Junior girls Rylee Mattheis will specialize in middle distance events and the javelin, while Alycia DeAnda will partake in a number of running events. Sophomore Josie Weers

The Lady Titans will have Jalea True, Olivia Christianson and Elizabeth Maeir to compete in throwing events. THE NUMBERS are smaller on the boys side. Senior Dalton Harmon will compete in running events, as will juniors Wade Gleue, Brayton Lind, Cody Heslop and Aiden Voorhees. Gleue also will be counted on as a runner. “It will be difficult, because of a lack of numbers, for us to win team-wise, or even place real high,” True admitted. But with low numbers, his focus is on quality, not quantity. “I think we’ll be able to score some points” at meets, he said. “We should be able to put together some good relays.”

Wildcats build on success YATES CENTER — Yates Center will suit up 15 players on the diamond this year, but with only two seniors, much of the talent is untested. “Everybody on the team is going to have to contribute,” head coach Rick Hurst said. If there’s a reason for optimism, it’s that Yates Center will rely upon many of the same youngsters who made great strides in both football and basketball season. In both of those instances, the Wildcat squad at the end of the season was better across the board than when the year started.

“Only time will tell if we can do that” with baseball, Hurst said. Seniors Mark Bacca and Tyler Greene will both man the outfield, while Bacca also will see time on the mound, and Greene will play some at second base. The heart of the roster lies in its six-member junior class. Blake Audiss and Sean Hurst both are capable of playing multiple positions. Audiss could see time at any of the infield slots, or in a corner outfield position. Hurst, meanwhile, will be found up the middle in some capacity, either as shortstop
or second base. He also could pitch or catch. Carter Burton will play the outfield, as will Collin Randall and Donnie Lepard. Jaron Morrison could play in the outfield or pitch. Sophomores Canon Cavender and Emmit George both have seen time behind the plate. Preston Hurst and Jayston Rice both also could fill in at first base. “There’s definitely going to be a chance for all the underclassmen to have a chance to prove themselves,” Hurst said. “They’re itching to get out there.”

Yates Center High runners Madelyn Proper, left, and Liberty Cavender get in laps at practice.
Numbers small, hopes high YATES CENTER — With all due apologies to William Shakespeare, Yates Center High’s track will likely be little in numbers, but fierce when it comes to competition. The Wildcat track squad will rely on a small number of newcomers for the 2021 season. “We really didn’t have anybody who made any noise two years ago,” said head coach Ryan Panko, noting last year’s lost season to COVID-19. The extra layoff may have hurt his jumpers, when it comes to remembering technique, but he’s confident his athletes can relearn their craft quickly. A trio of seniors will headline the roster.
28
SPRING 2021
On the girls side, Liberty Cavender will specialize in the 300-meter low hurdles. “She did well a couple of years ago, and might have been able to get to state last year,” Panko said. “She’s worked really hard in the last couple of years in the weight room. I can’t imagine her not making it.” Cavender’s drive has been evident in other sports. She, of course, suited up for the Wildcat football team last fall, and started every game. “She has a lot of mental toughness,” Panko said. “While she might not be as honed as other athletes, she can one-up a lot of them.” Senior Madelyn Proper also has high hopes for a state bid in the high jump. She’ll also
run the 800-meter run. On the boys side, senior Austin Moffet fared well as a cross country runner in the fall, and will compete in distance races again on the track. Like other schools that offer both baseball and track, it often is a chore to draw athletes away from the baseball and softball diamond, Panko said. “We usually get what’s left,” he noted. Nevertheless, he’s excited the athletes will once again get to compete. “I think the kids are, too.” Panko hopes his young athletes will embrace the opportunities that await this season.“We understand this could be taken away from us.”

YATES CENTER — Gearing up for the 2021 Yates Center High softball season is much like assembling a puzzle, head coach Abbie Collins said. “We are still in the process of seeing what the best fit is at each position,” Collins said. She has several tools at her disposal, including three who played in 2019, the last time the Wildcats took the field. Juniors Morgan Collins, Hannah Jones and Allie Chrisman all saw action as freshman. “They are the leaders,” Coach Collins said. “They all ended the season two

Wildcat golfers ready to par-ty YATES CENTER — A pair of Yates Center High golfers have some unfinished business to take care of this spring. Senior Easton Reynolds and junior Jack King both were key members of the YCHS golf team that took second at state two years ago. They were primed for even greater heights in 2020, when the golf season was called off amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
Easton Reynolds “I just wish we had more numbers to compete as a team, but we’ll do well individually,” Yates Center golf coach Karl Hamm said. The roster includes
just one other golfer, senior Taven Smoot. Reynolds, who has signed to play golf collegiately at Washburn University next year, earned the
sixth-place medal at the 2019 state meet. King finished 13th individually. Both are big hitters off the tee, Hamm noted.
“Easton is real good on the green,” Hamm said. “He reads putts very well. Jack is good with his short irons.” And while both are competitive on the course, they’re also quite supportive of each other, their coach notes. “It goes back and forth,” Hamm said. “Easton might win two or three events, then Jack does better. It really depends on the layout on the course. They work well together.”
