SPRING SPORTS FANS, The spring season is upon us! Hopefully this year scheduled events won’t fall prey to rainy weather as they did in 2019. Unfortunately at the moment, we are dealing with the rapid spread of the coronavirus. If everything does go as planned, then please remember to stay as hygienic as possible. All the precaution, the better. As for sports, area coaches felt optimistic heading into the 2020 spring season. During the winter, Iola’s Logan Brown claimed the 285-pound heavyweight state title. No pressure, but

DIAMOND & FIELD / SPRING 2020

I would not mind seeing that winning attitude repeated on the diamond, the court, or in the field and track. The spring also marks the end of the high school sports calendar but I expect the American Legion to make big strides on the baseball diamond this summer. A special thanks to all the coaches for taking the time to speak with me about the upcoming season. May the odds ever be in your favor, and let’s get this season started!

Coach Percy’s final ride

Senior Cal Leonard hits the baseball.

Mustangs eye second state title in three seasons Great pitching and solid defense have been the core to success in Mark Percy’s tenure with the Iola Mustangs. Percy said this will be his last season to coach the Mustangs. He hopes to end his reign with a second 4A state championship in three years. Last season, the Mustangs missed the state tournament by one game after losing to Tonganoxie in substate. In small-town America, it’s rare to have such talent at the Mustangs’ disposal. Graduating seniors Calvin Delich and Cal Leonard have each signed to play in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association. Delich will be heading to the University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg and Leonard to Washburn University in Topeka. Leonard is likely to be Percy’s ace, replacing 4A back-to-back pitcher of the year Derek Bycroft. Last year, Leonard went 4-0 on the season with a 4.45 ERA. He also is expected to feature at either shortstop or third base. “If Cal gets his mechanics down, and

keeps his confidence up when things don’t go well, he should be great,” Percy said. Delich will be deployed in center field, but may also spend some time at shortstop. Percy highlighted that Delich could also be a key piece to his rotation. Delich led the Mustangs at the plate, batting .533 a season ago. “We will keep Calvin at the lead-off position in the lineup,” Percy said.

“ Calvin is big for getting on base and scoring runs. And he has speed.” The Mustangs’ fire power runs deeper than just these two. Senior first-base Brady Wiggin brings a big bat to the lineup along with a golden glove at first base. Wiggin batted .500 with a home run a season ago. After graduation, Wiggin has signed to play at Allen Community College. Junior Nathan Louk headlines the

underclassmen returners. Louk will either feature on the mound, or play in the outfield. Last season, Louk went 2-1 with a 1.7 ERA in seven appearances, and at the plate, batted .415. “Louk can handle the bunt, he can bat, and he can hit the opposite field well,” Percy said. “He is confident, and he competes. He is a strong competitor.” Other key returners are seniors Casen Barker and Zane Whitney, who both are expected to see time behind the plate. Junior Bradyn Cole will be a key piece in the pitching rotation and is also expected to see time at third base when Leonard is on the mound. Sophomore Ryker Curry will also feature on the mound and in the middle infield. The Mustangs have the usual expectations: win the league and reach the state tournament. And with it being Percy’s final ride, there could be no better way to finish the script.

Fillies look to improve on 6-12 finish a year ago The Fillies ended last season with a 6-12 mark. Although it was not where they hoped to end up, head coach Chris Weide believes last season’s transition may have paved a path to success for this season. “I think we played fairly well,” Weide said. “We experimented with some different kids, and for this year I think it will help us out knowing where they play, and knowing what they can do.” Last year’s graduating class left gaping holes for this year’s Fillies lineup. Iola will be without Madisyn Holloway (2B), Paige Burrough (1B), Mia Aronson (3B), and Kendra Sprague (DH, C). Iola’s key returner is senior shortstop Kelsey Morrison. Morrison batted .267 and had two homeruns a season ago.

She has signed to play softball at Allen Community College next fall. “She is everywhere,” Weide said. “She is the quarterback of the team, she helps run everything. She is super solid on defense, really aggressive at the plate and hits really well.” Other key returners include seniors Sadrie Overall (CF) and Nissa Fountain

2-2 with a 3.38 ERA in six tries. “Reece is a lefty, and throws a little bit harder,” Weide said. “And with Jenna, every year I talk about how people don’t hit her, because she doesn’t throw super hard, but just has really good movement. Those two work really well together.” Weide is already addressing areas of improvement in the season’s early stages.

(LF). During her sophomore season, Fountain earned all-state honors by batting .491, the second-highest mark in Fillies history. Last season, she slipped to .288. “Nissa struggled a little bit last year, so I’m hoping she can get back her confidence,” Weide said. “When you play only 19 games, and you struggle for six or seven, it is going to hurt your average. Hopefully she gets back to where she was.” On the mound, Weide will rely on sophomore Reece Murry and junior Jenna Miller. Murry went 3-9 with a 3.43 ERA in 13 appearances, while Miller evened out at

The Fillies batted .262 as a team last season, and although Weide preaches stout defense and crisp pitching, he has his sights on the girls honing their hitting skills. “I also think that some of these girls who are getting a lot of playing time now, should be pretty comfortable with what they are going to see,” he said. Despite losing four key seniors, Weide keeps the realistic goal at a .500 season. He believes the Fillies are capable of earning 15 wins. The Fillies host Burlington on March 31. Kunkler leads IHS track & field Mustangs and Fillies to compete for spots at state Iola track and field head coach Dana Daugharthy has most of last year’s Mustangs and Fillies returning for the 2020 season, but one stands out among the rest. Senior Elysia Kunkler may be the best pound-for-pound athlete at Iola High. Last spring, Kunkler qualified for three events in the state

200-meter run, 800-meter run, shot put, and javelin. Daugharthy is also high on junior Jack Adams, who most recently earned a trip to state during the fall cross country season. Adams will compete in the 1600 and 3200-meter races. Daugharthy also has high hopes for Brett Willis, who will be a top sprinter as an individual or in relay races. Senior Ella Taylor is another key returner, who qualified in the state meet for triple jump and pole vault. Daugharthy also expects to see solid numbers in jumping events from sophomores Brett Morrison and Kobe Lord. State champion wrestler Logan Brown will be key in the shot put and discus. Daugharthy also hopes to develop sophomore Adam Atwell at the javelin. On the girls side, Christine Helman is a returning thrower. Helman finished second in the discus and third in the shot put over the summer at the Sunflower Games in Topeka. Daugharthy has had the tempo of practices at full speed since the very beginning. It starts with the “feed the cats,” mentality. Developed by Tony Holler, this training ideology has been used by track coaches across Kansas. Holler is currently training the fastest youth runner in the nation. “Our philosophy is if we train at 100%, then we get them feeling like they are running a race,” Daugharthy said.

“So when you are running a race, it should feel easy compared to the speed you are running in practice.” Daugharthy has the bar set for a silver finish for both the boys and girls in the Pioneer League, but perhaps gold is not out of the question. “I think we have the pieces, but I don’t know if we have the pieces to finish first,” Daugharthy said. “It would be a huge step for our boys, because it has been a long time since we had a really successful boys team.”

Different places and new faces Mustangs aim for more state medals Iola head coach Dan Berg had sent at least one player to the state competition up until 2018. Last season, the Mustangs doubled that effort by sending the doubles team of Elijah Fawson and Brett Plumlee, who wound up earning a medal. With Plumlee having graduated, Fawson will be looking to play in singles action. Senior Adryan Nading has participated in both doubles and singles. Nading’s highlight came in the Mustangs’ meet in Pittsburg, where he and Cheung finished third in No. 2 doubles action. That result helped Iola as a team earn bronze in one of the more memorable moments of 2019. “They brought Bishop Miege down and Thomas Jefferson

Independent Day School from Joplin,” Berg said. “Their kids’ bags were huge, and when they opened them up, they had like 10 rackets in there. When my kids looked at me, I told them ‘don’t worry about that, just go play.’” Two newcomers to the tennis scene will be juniors Landon Carson and Isaac Badders. Berg is hopeful the pair’s chemistry off the field will translate onto the tennis court. “They want to try it out and see what it’s like,” Berg said. “I’m more than likely going to put them as doubles, because they get along so well, and it’s something that I feel you have to look at.” Berg has the plan to get his new doubles pair, and any other newcomers, comfortable with the game in short order. “We start out with strokes, serves, teaching them the game, and how to move,” Berg said. “I try to spend time doing basic things with them, and then when they start doing better, I go ‘OK, you go play him here.’”

The little things Golfers seek improvement

Head coach Nick McAnulty is entering his third year in charge of the Iola High golf program. Josh Kaufman and Grant Luedke, both juniors, are the only Mustangs returning from a season ago. McAnulty highlights that a small group can be an advantage. “It makes it nice, because that first year we started out with nine and they began to dwindle away,” McAnulty said. “We’ll be able to give these kids 1-on-1 attention. I won’t have to split them up and go between different groups. Instead, I get to stick with them the whole practice.” Last season, Kaufman was only five strokes away from qualifying for state. McAnulty points out that Luedke has his best performances on the toughest courses throughout the season. McAunlty is hoping that both golfers find consistency in their games this season. “They are great to work with, and they listen really well,” McAnulty said. “The two years I have had them, they have really made some strides from their freshman to sophomore year. I expect them to make big strides this year.” During the first week of practice, IHS golfers worked on their short game. They started from 50 yards in and then slowly moved their way back on the course. Being efficient in the short game is an easy way to keep a low score. “By the end of the first week we are at 150 yards, and haven’t even brought out the driver yet,” McAnulty said. “We are really just focusing on that short game, and I tell them that’s where they can get low scores, by getting quick putts and stuff like that.” Last year, Jeremy Walden was the only Mustang golfer to reach the state competition. McAnulty admits it will be tough to send an IHS golfer to state this year with only two golfers on

the team. A team must have at least four players. Nonetheless, if Kaufman and Luedke continue to steadily improve, there is no reason why they couldn’t qualify as individuals and make a state appearance.

Getting to the big game

Cubs seek another state berth Humboldt High came up just short in reaching the 2A-1A state championship game last season. The Cubs were bounced in the semifinals, losing to eventual state champion Elkhart. In the consolation bracket, Humboldt finished fourth with a 19-3 loss to Rossville in the game for third. “We played pretty well the first couple of innings, and then we just made some uncharacteristic errors on defense,” Humboldt coach Mike Miller recalled. “Our pitching struggles to find the strike zone, and we didn’t have too much depth as far as pitching, so it started to show.” The Cubs are losing center fielder Dagen Goodner and key rotation pitcher Xavier Bauer. The Cubs will also be without senior Conor Haviland, who will be competing for the Cubs in track this season. Still, the Cubs have a majority of last season’s firepower returning. Gunner Elder is coming off a solid season on the mound, finishing the year with a 1.29 ERA and going 4-0 on the year. At the plate, Elder posted a .333 batting average while earning 22 RBIs.

“He didn’t throw a whole lot in the regular season, but pitched in some really big games for us,” Miller said. “He pitched huge in the regional championship game, and then he pitched our firstround game at state. He was a guy that I knew was going to have mental toughness.” Taylor Lassman has been the Cubs’ first baseman the past three years, but will also see increased time on the mound. Lassman

also brings a big bat in the lineup, batting .371 last season with two home runs. Jackson Aikins will also be counted on to give Miller some innings on the mound. The senior also brings a good love in the field and is looking to build on his .290 finish at the plate last season. Miller is also excited to see what Cooper Jaro is capable of on the mound after dealing with injury last season. For this year, Humboldt will continue to rely on their stout defense. “I like our defense, we’ve always put good defenses on the field,” Miller said. “The last few years I’ve asked my guys to go out there, throw strikes, and let our defense make plays for them. Coach Brad Piley hopes for to get HHS back to state There are good teams, and then there are great teams. Humboldt head softball coach Brad Piley is hoping for his Lady Cubs to aim higher than a seventh consecutive Tri-Valley league title this season, and perhaps make another state appearance. “This year we are 3A, so it is going to be a little bit tougher,” Piley said. “Last year we were 2A, but we didn’t take advantage of it and we should have the last couple of years. Going to state used to be something that was guaranteed, but we haven’t done it in awhile.” Senior Winter Syder, who only played in three games last season, was still awarded All-Tri-Valley League honors. Another key returner is Kirsten Roush who will feature at first base, and Emma Johnson is rejoining the team after a oneyear hiatus on the track team. Johnson will feature in the outfield, and will be joined by junior All-League center fielder Isabelle Murrow. Piley is also excited to see the development of sophomore Kirstyn Murrow, who will feature as shortstop. On the mound, Piley will rely on the services of sophomore Brooklyn Ellis, who was a key cog for Piley as a freshman. “She is very consistent,” Piley said. “She keeps a level head, doesn’t get down, and has that perfect personality for a pitcher. I think her speed will pick up, and she has several pitches she can throw.” The key for success for the Lady Cubs this season will be efficiency at the plate. Piley also pointed out that the pitching in the Tri-Valley League is not up to par with the competition the Lady Cubs will face in the postseason.

Isiah Coronado turns the corner, and picks up pace in a race.

On the way again

Cubs and Lady Cubs look to get back to state Humboldt head track coach Eric Carlson is ready for some warmer weather, but more importantly, he’s ready to get the track and field season underway. “We always want to compete for the league title in both the boys and girls side regardless of what the numbers are,” Carlson said. “We want to do well at regionals, try to compete for the regional title, and then take as many kids to state as we can.” Last season went well for the Cubs, with 17 athletes qualifying for the state

meet. Carlson expects to take another solid group to state, and has already seen signs of promise. During the cross country season, Lulu Melendez, Melina Hess, Zoey Wilson, Leah Mueller, Brianna Baker, Taylor Korte, and Peyten Galloway all made great strides. Melendez, a freshman, set numerous Lady Cub records in the fall, and is looking to translate that success to the track. “I’m excited to see what Lulu is going to do on the track,” Carlson said. “She had a very

successful cross country season, and she was battling some injuries during the end of the season. But now, she should be good to go.” On the boys side, Isiah Coronado and Drake Harrington will both be key players in gaining points for the Cubs. “Isiah is kind of a jack of all trades,” Carlson said. “He is fast enough on the 4x100m for us, and the 400 is probably his best event. Two years ago he wanted to try the 800. He is a pretty decent athlete, and he’s versatile.”

HERE’S TO A

GREAT SEASON

CUBS!

Taking it slow

HHS golf to make steady gains Humboldt High golf is in a little bit of a transition phase entering the 2020 spring season. Not only are the Cubs losing last year’s third-place finisher at state, Ryan Sellman, but also will have a change at the top of the totem pole. Bret Hauser will be taking over for Scott Brady, and the first-year head coach is ready to get the ball rolling on the new season. “It was a game I learned from my grandfather growing up, and is a sport that you can play for the rest of your life,” Hauser said. Roni Bulk and Reid Smith will be the two seniors that headline the returners this season. Also coming back is sophomore Aiden Johnson and junior Tanner Church. The four returners will be joined by freshmen Brennen Nuessen and Robbie Myers. The Cubs will have a variance in skill level entering the new season. Nonetheless, Hauser will be taking the same approach with all golfers, even if they have played for five years or five days. “We are going to focus more on the short game, and working on the putting green,” Hauser said. “Also we will work on keeping our irons and woods in the fairway, and not let balls slice off to the right.” Hauser admits that 2020 could be a rebuilding year for the Cubs. “Talent-wise, I’d day we are probably rebuilding. We aren’t going to have the standout talent like we did with Sellman,”

Hauser said. “I think for a lot of them, their goal will be to shoot under 100, and slowly improve their scores from there.” For younger and inexperienced golfers available at Hauser’s disposal, it will be vital to make sure they stay mentally fit over the course of the season. Golf can be a grueling mental game when shots don’t fall, and Hauser is prepared to keep his golfers’ confidence high throughout the year. “I’ll tell them to not take everything so serious, and if you have a bad shot, then brush it off and think of a good shot that you had to just get your mindset back where it needs to be,” Hauser said. As far as practice goes, the Cubs will spend a majority of their time in Chanute before transitioning over to Iola, Humboldt’s home course, later in the season. On Wednesdays, Humboldt will stay at home for practices. So far, practice has gone as expected. “So far so good, but a lot of the kids haven’t played since last season. So the first few practices have been all about getting back in the routine,” Hauser said.

Brenda Mills is optimistic her Marmaton Valley High softball squad will field a competitive squad in 2020. She just hasn’t had a chance to see much of them yet. Mills, who is returning as head coach at Marmaton Valley after a five-year hiatus, has served the past few years as scorekeeper for the school’s baseball team. “So I didn’t get much of a chance to watch them,” Mills said. What she knows is her roster has a number of athletes who have shined in other sports during the 2019-20 school year. Alyson Ard and Mykayla Ard both saw experience on the diamond last year, as did Kendall Scharff. Seniors Zoi Yoho, Morgan Woods and Julianna Sprague will be counted on as team leaders. Among the freshmen who have shown promise in other sports are Madi Lawson and Gracyn Bracken, Mills said. The Wildcats must fill the vacuum left by the graduation of all-league pitcher Karlie Stephens, who has moved onto Allen Community College. “A couple of girls said they’ve pitched before,” Mills said. “I’m not sure how much they’ve done.” And much like the pitching staff, Mills said she wanted to see her Wildcat players in action before settling on a lineup, or

decide who is playing where on the diamond. Marmaton Valley’s softball season opens April 2 at Jayhawk-Linn.

BEST OF LUCK THIS SPRING, WILDCATS!

THE BASEBALL fields will stay silent at Marmaton Valley this season. A numbers crunch put the school in a bind. Efforts to consolidate rosters with area school districts were unsuccessful, forcing MV administrators to call off the season.

Seniors to lead Wildcats

A pair of senior throwers will be counted on to lead the way for Marmaton Valley High’s track team in 2020. Ty Scharff and Bo Knavel, who took on similar leading roles for the Wildcats in football and basketball, respectively, will do so again in field events, head coach Steve Smith said. “They’ve been there in the heat of competition, and know what’s expected,” Smith said. On the girls’ side, Kaylee Becker has proven to be a skilled athlete, Smith said, and should contend for medals in jumping events. “We have several veterans who should be able to help us stay competitive,” he said. There is one notable absence, however. DIAMOND & FIELD / SPRING 2020

The Wildcats will be without the services of senior standout Bailey Griffith — who qualified for the state track meet in several running and jumping events in years past — but injured her knee during basketball season and is done for the year. “It’s definitely a big loss,” Smith said. “I feel bad for Bailey because she was such a strong performer.” Track season opens April 2 at Oswego.

YC seeks deep playoff run After a 12-8 finish last season, head coach Richard Hurst believes his Wildcats have the talent to make a deep playoff run. “We had a lot of junior talent last year, and this year they are going to be stepping up as seniors,” Hurst said. “There’s a lot of expectations for Yates Center this season,” Hurst said. “When we had our very first meeting, I told them that there are a lot of things that I want, and they want from this season. So, we have to be willing to work together, and do the right thing on and off the field.” Senior Titan Smoot is expected to play in a variety of positions in the infield. Last season, Smoot batted .390 and finished with a team-high 22 RBIs. With Smoot’s power behind the plate, Hurst expects him to slide into the no. 4 spot in the lineup. “As long as he makes contact, and pays attention to the fundamentals, he can set it for a ride,” Hurst said.

Caden Graham is another returning senior and will feature as the Wildcats’ catcher. Hurst will likely put Graham at the top of the order as well, and rightfully so. Graham finished with an average of .444 at the plate to go along with 19 RBIs and seven doubles. Seniors Jaymond Rice and Asher Sievers are two more seniors to have a major say this season. Rice finished with an average of .431 at the plate, and Sievers with .382. The Wildcats also have some talented underclassmen to mix in with its talented seniors. Sophomore Sean Hurst made eight plate appearances as a freshman last season, collecting three hits and four RBIs. Taven Smoot will also be a big piece of Hurst’s plans this season. Sievers, Graham and Hurst are also expected to have roles on the mound. “They give you a solid inning, and honestly that is all I am asking for,” Hurst said. “I have depth, which will get you pretty far down the road.” If this season is to go as planned for the Wildcats, the seniors will have to be the ones leading the charge in the locker room, and keeping underclassmen accountable. “I’m going to rely heavily on my seniors for leadership,” Hurst said. “While they may have the talent on the field, I want to help teach them to become better leaders this season.”

Mixing the old with the new YC plans for wins in 2020

Last year the Yates Center Lady Cats finished third in the ThreeRivers League with an 14-16 record overall. Luckily for Yates Center, most of that firepower will be back on the diamond this season. Senior Madelynn Collins is the first name that comes to mother/ head coach Abbie Collins’ mind, and with plenty of reason why. Madelynn was Yates Center’s ace with a 2.1 ERA and 93 strikeouts in 11 games last season. Madelynn also brings the biggest bat in the lineup, finishing last year with an .516 average and collecting 27 RBIs. Madelynn has signed to play with Allen Community College next year. Madelynn isn’t the only Collins who will have a say this season. Her sister, Morgan Collins, a sophomore, had a superb freshman season, batting .421 with 17 RBIs. The sisters have been preparing for the upcoming season together. Morgan expects to see more time on the mound this season. DIAMOND & FIELD / SPRING 2020

a pitching coach over the winter in an effort to build up some different pitches. Taylor Jacobs served as Yates Center’s secondary pitcher last year. When not on the mound, Jacob was behind the plate as catcher. This year, Jacob will feature as the Lady Cats’ lone catcher. Jacobs batted .425 and led the team with 30 RBIs.

Six of the nine starters are returning from last season, but coach Collins admits that those three spots will be crucial to fill. Collins will be searching for underclassmen, and perhaps some talented freshmen, to fill those spots. The Lady Cats have holes at first base and in the outfield. “They (freshmen) are the ones that are going to have to fill those spots,” Coach Collins said.

Keeping the tradition

Wildcats look to send more talent back to state Current K-State runner Hadley Splechter was unstoppable on the track in his four years as a Yates Center Wildcat. While YC doesn’t have an athlete of that caliber this year, head coach Ryan Panko has some other Wildcats prepared to make some noise this season. sprinter, Panko said. Junior Austin Moffett is coming off a state appearance during the cross country season, and Panko believes he is due for his state debut in the spring as a distance runner. On the girl side, Liberty Cavender has the potential to have an excellent season in the hurdles, and Madelyn Proper is also eyeing a state appearance in the high jump.

“Cynthia Ballin is only a sophomore, but she is going to be a really good thrower for us,” Panko said. “Her mechanics are really good, we just need to get her a little stronger, but she has been working hard in the weight room, so I’m hoping we can put that together.” The best news for YC track and field is large numbers interested. Panko admits that the numbers have trended down in recent years, but having more than 20 YC students come out this season is a massive boost to the program. Shane Weber and Ethan Clay are two freshmen who stand out. “Shane is fast, and started on the football field for us,” Panko said. “He is just a fast, gritty kid who works hard. Ethan is another real fast kid. With them on board, I think we might be able to put together a nice 4X100m relay team.” This year Panko admits he is altering his approach a smidge, and is ready to get the best out of each individual along the way. “In the past few years we have been giving some kids some extra attention, and I think some kids have suffered from that. We are taking a team approach, and trying to get everybody better. We want the kids to compete and do well, but we really just want them to enjoy it, and respect the sport.”

Third crack at it

Crest to key on wins in 2020 Starting a new program takes patience, but most importantly time, said Crest head baseball coach Roland Weir. The Lancers are set to start their third baseball season in their history, and after a 3-17 first year, and 6-9 second year, Weir believes the Lancers are ready for the next step. “We had a few rainouts last year that we couldn’t make up, and I think they were games we could have won that would have put us over .500,” Weir said. “Last year we finished fifth in the ThreeRivers League, and I feel like this year we should be in the top three.” Weir looks to senior Zach Beckmon as leading the Lancers. Beckmon will feature as Crest’s ace on the mound, and firstbaseman when he is not pitching. Beckmon also brings a big bat to the lineup. Last season he hit .452 along with a team-high 19 RBIs, and is the team’s only returning All-Leaguer. “He is a left-handed pitcher, and he has command of three or four pitches,” Weir said. “He throws in the mid to upper 70s, and I have no doubt that he is pushing 80-plus. He is a big, strong kid that has offers from different colleges. He is an all-around athlete.”

Another key returner for the Lancers will be junior Tyson Hermreck, who just missed out on an All-League award last season. Hermreck is likely to feature at different positions, but Weir highlighted a majority of his time will come at second base. Hermreck batted .382 with 10 RBIs last season.

“He [Beckmon] is a left-handed hitter, he’s got some pop, and he hits lots of line drives,” Weir said. “He is fairly quick, and has good instincts.” Juniors Stratton McGhee and Kobey Miller are poised to have a big season. McGhee will bring power on the mound and behind the plate. McGhee batted .370 a year ago with eight RBIs. Miller, who hit just below .300 last season, will feature at shortstop. Mixing in with the upperclassmen will be a group of freshmen that receives high praise from Weir. “They are deep, and have played a ton of baseball. I have coached some of them for the last five or six years in travel baseball,” Weir said. “They have lots of baseball experience, and that is going to give me some competitive players for every position.” If the third year is going to be the charm for the Lancers, it is going to boil down to pitching, which the Lancers have. “I feel like we are probably going to have the deepest pitching staff in the league,” Weir said. “I’m probably nine or 10 deep in my pitching department, so that is probably going to be my strongest suit. I have faith in our pitching this year, but I’m going to focus on pitching and defense. Our hitting will be there.”

The time is now Crest hopes for progress

Crest head coach Casey Cook is setting the bar high for the Lady Lancers’ third softball season. After two losing seasons, Cook is optimistic that this year the Lady Lancers will break through to a winning season, and a top finish in the Three-Rivers League.

“My expectations for this season are really high,” Cook said. “We have a mostly young group, but seven returners, so that means seven experienced girls. We have three really good leaders on the team, so my expectations are even higher than last year. I’m hoping for a top-three finish in the League.” Senior Rylee Beckmon highlights the returners. Beckmon will be called upon to be a leader on and off the field, and handle

duties behind the plate as the No.1 catcher. “She is a leader,” Cook said. “She always hustles, always gives it her all, and is one of those kids that other players look up to, and want to be like. She is a great role model for the younger girls.” Crest’s ace will be senior Ridley Black. Cook praises Black’s ability to keep her composure through the toughest of situations. That mentality will be key down the stretch, as Black is poised to be on the mound more often that not. Junior Aubree Holloran is another impact player who Cook says can play anywhere on the field. “I’m looking for her to play shortstop, and then anywhere else we need her,” Cook said. “She will be a vocal leader, and she knows the ropes. Even though she is just a junior, I put her right up there with my seniors.” Other returners include sophomores Lindsey Godderz, Anna Hermreck, Vivian Noah and Lanna Ayers. The key for the Lancers’ success will be meshing their underclassmen and upperclassmen to create the winning recipe. “In my previous two years, it’s been a struggle because they have been distant, and not as much comradery,” Cook said. “This year, they are not besties, but they are a tight group.”

Billngs sisters return for CHS Head track and field coach Zack Mason received a major boost last season when sisters Elka and Ursula Billings transferred to Crest for the second semester of the school year. “I was really happy, Mason said. Last season, Elka qualified for the 800 meters at state along with setting the school record in the event. Elka has already signed to run at Allen Community College, where she will compete for head coach Vince DeGrado’s prestigious cross country program. Sophomore Ursula qualified for state in the two-mile race. But the Billings sisters are not all Crest High track and field has to offer. Sophomore Lindsey Godderz, who will also juggle softball duties, is slated to have a big season in the thrower’s pit. Godderz missed qualifying for state in the javelin by only a couple of places. Another thrower, senior Summer Star, is also slated to have a big season throwing the shot put and discus. Mixing in with the upperclassmen will be an abundance of freshmen, who Mason hopes can have an immediate impact. One is Ridley McGhee, slated to compete in the hurdles. On the boys side, Jacquez Coleman headlines the returners, and will compete in the long jump, triple jump, and 100m dash. “He is a good athlete, Mason said. “Just watching him in football, he looks faster than last year. I’m really hoping that on long jump and triple jump, we can get him to be consistent on the board. Juniors Stratton McGhee and Kobey Miller will be competing on the diamond, and on the track for the Lancers this spring. McGhee will compete in the 100m, long jump, and also wants to give the javelin a try. Miller will feature in the 800m run, and will also throw the javelin.

“Kobey really did well last year,” Mason said. “Plus, he grew six inches, and I think he is going to cut his time down a lot.” Mason is entering his sixth year in charge of the track and field program at Crest, and, as always, his expectations remain the same. “I just want the kids to work hard, and keep getting better every week,” Mason said. “I hope we can repeat last year’s model when we set a lot of personal and season records, and peaked at the right time.”

Quality over quantity

Elka Billings competes for the Lady Lancers.

Senior Cooper Harred to lead Titans in 2020 While his track team won’t have a large number of athletes, Southern Coffey County head coach Jeff True is hopeful that quality, not quantity, is the theme for 2020. “It should be a good mix,” said True, entering his 30th year as head coach at SCC. “We don’t have a lot of numbers, but the kids

get along well, and they’ll work to get better.” Leading the way is senior Cooper Harred, a state qualifier in 2019 in the discus. Harred will look to get back to Wichita in that and the shot put. True noted he had competed in the 4x100-meter relay. “I’m not sure if we’ll

be able to do that again this year,” in part because of the numbers. Jaden Pankey, another senior, will compete in jumping events. He cleared 5 feet, 10 inches, last year as a junior. Pankey also will be counted on with relay races. On the girls side, another thrower, junior Kyra Ohl, qualified last year in the discus. She’ll also compete in the shot put in 2020. Others expected to make a mark on the upcoming track season are Emersyn Hall, javelin, Wade Gleue, javelin, Brayton Lind, middle distance, Jaylea True, shot put and discus, Madelyn Spencer, sprints and relays, and Ross Novelle, sprints. Two freshmen also could compete earlier than most their age. Josie Weers cleared 4 feet, 10 inches in the high jump as an eighth-grader. “If she can add a couple of inches, she has a chance to be medaling soon,” True said.
