election as the nation’s first black president captivated the world. This time, Obama ground it out with a stay-the-course pitch that essentially boiled down to a plea for more time to make things right and a hope that Congress will be more accommodating than in the past. The vanquished Republican, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, tried to set a more conciliatory tone on the way off the stage. “At a time like this, we can’t risk partisan bickering,” Romney said after a campaign filled with it. “Our leaders have to reach across the aisle to do the people’s work.” House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, spoke of a dual mandate. “If there is a mandate, it is a mandate for both parties to find common ground and take steps together to help our economy grow and create jobs,” he said. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky had a more harsh assessment. “The voters have not endorsed the failures or excesses of the president’s first term,” McConnell said. “They have simply given him more time to finish the job they asked him to do together” with a balanced Congress. Obama won at least 303 electoral votes to 206 for Romney, with 270 needed for victory, and had a nearsweep of the nine most hotly contested states. But the close breakdown in the popular vote showed Americans’ differences over

With more than 90 percent of precincts reporting, the popular vote went 50 percent for Obama to 48.4 percent for Romney, a businessman-turned-politician. Romney had argued that Obama failed to turn around the economy and he said it was time for a new approach that combined lower taxes and a less intrusive government. Obama’s re-election means his signature health care overhaul will endure, as will the Wall Street overhaul enacted after the economic meltdown. The drawdown of troops in Afghanistan will continue apace. With an aging roster of justices, the president probably will have at least one more nomination to the Supreme Court. lenges immediately ahead for the 44th president are all too familiar: an economy still baby-stepping its way toward full health; 23 million people out of work or in search of better jobs; civil war in Syria; a menacing standoff over Iran’s nuclear program. Sharp differences with Republicans in Congress on taxes, spending, deficit reduction, immigration and more await. While Republicans control the House, Democrats have at least 52 votes in the Senate and Republicans 45. One newly elected independent isn’t saying which party he’ll side with, and races in Montana and North Dakota were not yet called. Votes also were being counted today in the Montana and Washington gubernatorial races. Even before Obama gets to his second inaugural on Jan. 20, he must deal with the threatened “fiscal cliff.” A combination of automatic tax increases and steep across-the-board spending cuts are set to take effect in January if Washington doesn’t quickly reach a budget deal. Experts have warned that the economy could tip back into recession with an agreement. Despite long lines at polls in many places, turnout overall looked to be down from four years ago as the president pieced together a winning coalition of women, young people, minorities and lower-income voters that reflected the country’s changing demographics. Obama’s superior ground organization in the most contested states was critical to his success. Obama’s victory speech — he’d written a concession, too, just in case — reflected the realities of the rough road ahead. “By itself the recognition that we have common hopes and dreams won’t end all the gridlock, or solve all our problems or substitute for the painstaking work of building consensus and making the difficult compromises needed to move this country forward,” Obama said.

Grizzlies pull away from Allen women EL DORADO — Already off to a 2-0 start, Allen Community College’s women were well within striking distance of their third consecutive win to start the 2012-13 season Tuesday. The Red Devils trailed host Butler County Community College by a single point with under four minutes left in regulation before foul trouble reared its

Red Devil men fall to Butler EL DORADO — A cold start and colder finish did in Allen Community College’s men Tuesday. The Red Devils fell behind 10-3 to host Butler Community College before rallying to take a 23-21 lead late in the first half. The game went back and forth until about four minutes into the second half when a pair of Grizzlies 3-pointers gave Butler a 10-point lead. The margin beyond 20 points from there as Butler recorded a 90-67 victory. The loss dropped Allen to 1-2 on the season, while Butler improved to 3-0. Cameron Blue continued his torrid early-season play with 27 points and 13 rebounds to pace the Red Devils. But Allen committed 23 turnovers, leading to 32

points for the Grizzlies. Individual statistics for the Red Devils were unavailable. Allen travels to Salina Friday and Saturday to play in the Brown Mackie Classic. The Red Devils take on K-State Salina at 5 p.m. Friday. They tip off at 3 p.m. Saturday against host Brown Mackie.

tempted 43 free throws in a 78-55 win. “The final score was no indication at all as to what kind of game took place,” James said. “It was a very physically demanding game and had a playoff type atmosphere to it. “Those who see only the final score may be misled by what type of game took place, but those who were in attendance ... witnessed a truly hard-fought battle by both teams who gave maximum effort. Hopefully the rematch (at home Nov. 20) can produce the same high level of play with the obvious exception of a more positive final outcome.” Brittney Redmond led Allen’s scoring with 15 points, while Miracle Davis added 14 points, eight rebounds, three assists and three steals. State News

Campbell wins over Wu By JOHN MILBURN Associated Press

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Carolyn Campbell lamented that she didn’t court enough voters in northeast Kansas in seeking her second term on the State Board of Education. Her opponent, Jack Wu, was outspoken on teaching evolution and has ties to an anti-gay Topeka church notorious for picketing military members’ funerals. Campbell, a Democrat, worried GOP voters would simply follow Wu’s Republican party affiliation. In the end, Campbell, a Topeka Democrat, received more than enough votes in Tuesday’s election, easily defeating Wu, according to unofficial results. “I’m happy I have four more years to work for our children. That’s all I wanted to do,” Campbell said. Also winning seats on the 10-member board were Republican Steve Roberts of Overland Park in the 2nd District of the Kansas City area and former GOP state Rep. Deana Horst of Salina in the 6th District of central Kansas. Wu, a Topeka computer programmer, made opposition to teaching evolution the centerpiece of his campaign. He described evolution as “Satanic lies” and said on a website that public schools were preparing students to be “liars, crooks, thieves, murderers, and perverts.”

Wu also raised eyebrows by saying that he was lured to Kansas from California in 2008 by Westboro Baptist. The Topeka church, led by the Rev. Fred Phelps Sr., is known internationally for picketing with anti-gay slogans and proclaiming that American soldiers’ deaths are God’s punishment for the nation’s tolerance of homosexuality. Wu is not formally a member, but he’s attended services regularly. Republicans, including Gov. Sam Brownback, disavowed Wu in June, and Democrats worked to make sure voters knew about his identification with Westboro Baptist. Wu said he didn’t have the campaign resources to counter Campbell’s ads making an issue of his ties to the church. “I don’t see where that has anything to do with public education. It is what it is,” he said. Campbell, a former Topeka school board member, was elected to her second, four-year term on the state board. She acknowledged that she was worried some voters in GOP-leaning Kansas would simply vote Republican. “I feel like I missed a few people, but I’m pleased with the margin of victory,” Campbell said. “I think a lot of people voted for him going down the ‘R’ list and

didn’t know anything about him.” John Ham, 48, a stayat-home father of two teenagers in Topeka, is a registered Republican but voted for Campbell because of Wu’s ties to Westboro Baptist. He said he, too, worried that about Republicans voting a straight ticket. “I hope that everyone else understood the actual candidates,” he said, leaving his polling place at the Topeka Lutheran School. The election keeps the 10-member board’s balance of power the same, diminishing any chances that Kansas might adopt science standards for its public schools skeptical of evolution, as it has in the past. A coalition of Democrats and moderate Republicans was firmly in the majority. Much of the board’s work in setting education policy has been overshadowed since the late 1990s by debates about how evolution should be taught and the resulting national attention and ridicule. The state had five sets of standards in eight years starting in 1999, as evolution skeptics gained and lost state board majorities in elections. The current, evolution-friendly standards were adopted by the board in 2007, but state law requires them to be updated.

House health committee chair ousted TOPEKA — The chair of the House Health and Human Services Committee was ousted from a redrawn Wichita district in Tuesday’s election. GOP Rep. Brenda Landwehr, also one of the longest-serving members of the Kansas House, was defeated by Democratic Rep. Nile Dillmore. It was one of several legislative races that pitted incumbents against one another in districts redrawn earlier this year by state judges after the Legislature failed to agree on reapportionment maps. Dillmore, 65, has been in the House since 2001. As the ranking Democrat on the House Taxation Committee, he was outspoken in his opposition to the income tax cuts

signed into law earlier this year by the governor. He is a real estate developer. Dillmore’s wife, Janet Miller, serves on the Wichita City Council and is vice mayor. The couple has been married 22 years. Landwehr, 57, and her husband, David, own an insurance agency. First elected to the House in 1994, Landwehr is the longest serving Republican member of the chamber’s Sedgwick County delegation. Only five members in the 125-seat House have had a longer tenure there than she. The new 92nd District includes Riverside and Indian Hills neighborhoods in central Wichita. About 55 percent of the

Dillmore said though it may look like redistricting did him a favor, he still had to sway significant numbers of independents and moderate Republicans to win. Also defeated Tuesday was Rep. Geraldine Flaharty of Wichita, the ranking Democrat on the House health committee. She lost narrowly to incumbent GOP Rep. Phil Hermanson. Rep. Bill Feuerborn of Garnett, ranking Democrat on the House budget committee, was defeated by Republican Kevin Jones, a legislative newcomer, according to unofficial election tallies filed with the secretary of state.

KU to moniter polar ice LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — University of Kansas researchers are receiving a $1.7 million federal grant to study climate change. The National Science Foundation is awarding the money over three years. It will help the university’s Center for Remote Sensing of Ice Sheets develop enhanced radar that can capture higher-resolution images of polar ice sheets. The ultra-wideband radar will provide more information on things like the conditions of the layers toward the top of an ice sheet. Radar images also help researchers study things such as whether there is water underneath, which can contribute to an area of an ice sheet moving faster than the surrounding ice. Researchers will use the images to find the best spots to drill for ice core samples. Those samples provide a historical record of climate conditions at certain times.

lades are justified for every last one. Jordan Strickler, Cody Cokely and Drew Smith have been on stage often enough that the experience is second nature. McDonald and Colton Schubert are physically imposing, but show soft sides that may surprise. They also leave no doubt they are very good actors, and have the knack of translating

their enjoyment in the craft to the audience. The Bannister girls, Trilby and Olivia, have the advantage of having been involved in many public events and it shows. And it’s a delightful foursome when they, Brynna Hollins and Catherine Venter rush on stage as sirens and furies. Fact is, nary a one of the 28 cast members fails to live up to Spencer’s expecta-

tions, another solid tribute to the talent that flows from Iola High drama classes. Also, there is no doubt that having a professional setting in the Bowlus Center is a catalyst. A handful of drama students aren’t on stage, but without their contributions in the wings with lighting, sound and other animates required to put on a show it wouldn’t approach the success that it is.

Driver injured Jacob Wolken, 22, Garnett, suffered a concussion and facial cuts when the car he was driving struck a highway transport three miles north of Iola on U.S. 169 Wednesday morning. The transport, driven by Eduardo Barraza, 49, El Paso, Texas, was making a U-turn when the accident occurred. Wolken is an Allen County jail employee and was on his way home from work when the accident occurred. The crash sheared off the top of his car, a 2006 Chevrolet. Sheriff Tom Williams said the accident was close to being much more serious. The passenger-side headrest in Wolken’s car was ripped off, but the driver’s side was just brushed by components of the transport.

State faces $328 million budget hole By MIKE SHIELDS KHI News Service

TOPEKA — Kansas policymakers can expect a $328 million budget shortfall in the coming fiscal year, according to new revenue projections released today by the state’s official revenue estimating panel. That means the 2013 Kansas Legislature after it convenes in January must significantly cut spending and/or raise taxes in order to meet the constitutional mandate of maintaining a balanced budget for the fiscal year that begins July 1. State general fund revenues over the next 18 months are expected to drop more than $1 billion, mostly as a result of the biggest tax cut in state history. The income tax reductions were approved by Gov. Sam Brownback and the 2012 Legislature but are not effective until Jan. 1. The scheduled rollback of a sales tax increase approved in 2010 also is a factor expected to decrease the amount of money the state takes in to cover the costs of schools, prisons and a broad range of other programs. The state is expected to end the current fiscal year with $470 million in reserves otherwise the anticipated shortfall for fiscal 2014 would be that much deeper. The Consensus Estimating Group, which includes three university economists, legislative research experts and officials from

State general fund revenues over the next 18 months are expected to drop more than $1 billion, mostly as a result of the biggest tax cut in state history. used since 1975. The panel’s report Wednesday was the first one to include projections for fiscal year 2014. Budget Director Steve Anderson said it was too soon to say how the Brownback administration would propose closing the anticipated budget gap. The governor is expected to deliver his budget plan to the Legislature in January and Anderson said many details of the recommendations still were being worked out. But Anderson said the governor intended to see K-12 education programs “fully funded” and that an earlier directive from the budget office to state agencies to prepare for 10 percent cuts in the coming fiscal year “doesn’t apply to K-12.” Education spending accounts for the single biggest portion of the state budget followed by the costs of social services for the poor, elderly and disabled. Anderson said the tax bill signed by the governor wasn’t the one Brownback originally proposed but “it was the only tax cut” he got from the Legislature. He said he didn’t think a tax increase would be necessary to balance the coming budget but that it wouldn’t be up to him to decide.

Spiderweb delays voting REHOBOTH, Mass. (AP) — It wasn’t hanging chads or voter fraud that delayed the vote count in one Massachusetts town — it was a spider. Rehoboth Town Clerk Kathleen Conti says one of the town’s aging voting machines, which she’s been pressing to have replaced for several years, malfunctioned Tuesday morning. She called a technician, who said a spider web apparently prevented the machine’s scanner from counting ballots. Conti tells The Sun Chronicle of Attleboro all Rehoboth’s voting machines received preventive maintenance a month ago. The vote count wasn’t completed until Wednesday afternoon. Rehoboth voters favored Republican presidential challenger Mitt Romney and incumbent Republican U.S. Sen. Scott Brown, but went for Democratic U.S. House candidate Joseph Kennedy III. Rehoboth, with about 12,000 residents, is about 50 miles southwest of Boston.
