Winter is upon us Whether you like it or not, winter is on the horizon. Luckily enough for Allen County area sports fans, there’s lots of action in the warm confines of high school gyms where youth are sweating it out on the basketball court or wrestling mat. As with any operation, turnover from graduating seniors can present both challenges and opportunities. Nowhere is that more apparent than in high school athletics where last year’s success depended on just one or two key athletes. On the other hand, an additional year under a team’s belt can yield more height, weight and talent. So parents, realize that those Saturdays where your teen slept till noon and those cupboards that seemed to automatically empty themselves all went to helping these young athletes grow another inch, develop stronger

muscles and quicken their step. In this preview of six area high schools we’ve asked the coaches for their predictions on the 2019-20 basketball and wrestling seasons. And while the year had yet to officially begin, most coaches had a good grip of their team’s incoming talent. In part, that’s because football and cross country runners easily transition to the hardwoods or wrestling mat, and the teamwork from playing volleyball and tennis makes for great chemistry on the basketball court. A special thanks to all the coaches for taking the time to speak to me about the upcoming season. We’re excited for the games to begin!

Iola Mustangs

Calvin Delich pushes the pace on a fast break for the Mustangs.

SETTING THE BAR HIGH Boys eye Pioneer League Trophy The goal remains the same year in and year out for head coach Luke Bycroft: Become Pioneer League Champions. Last season the Iola Mustangs finished 9-12 overall and 5-7 in Pioneer League play. Bycroft emphasized that in order for the Mustangs to improve on that mark, they will need to operate as a cohesive unit. “One of the things that has happened in the past, is you have one person who is not in the right mindset and doesn’t hold the team’s success over his individual success,” Bycroft said.

“Everyone will be successful if they come in with a team-first mindset. I know that sounds like coach talk, but it is absolutely the truth.” Headlining the returners from last season will be second team All-Pioneer League senior Cal Leonard, who led the Mustangs with 14 points per game. Leonard will provide Iola with the ability to shoot from long-range, mid-range, and finish at the rim. Another key returner will be senior Calvin Delich, who can attack the basket. Bycroft expects Delich’s athleticism to have a major impact on defense for the Mustangs. Senior Elijah Fawson stands at 6 feet 5 inches, and will have the ability to score inside. As far as underclassmen, juniors Landon Carson, Bradyn Cole and Dillon Bycroft are all capable of scoring. The good news for

Iola hoops fans is the junior class has earned success at previous levels on the hardwood, and can expect the boys to bring that success to varsity play. “We have had groups that have had success before, but it hasn’t translated to the varsity level,” Bycroft said. “The last two years of senior classes had success up until their sophomore year, and then at the varsity level struggled for various reasons. This group has played together better, worked together better, and they do a better job of sharing the team’s success.” Bycroft said the junior and senior classes mesh well together, and the seniors give Iola strong on-court leadership. Still, Bycroft said he expects the underclassmen to become more vocal and begin to take ownership as the season progresses. If the Mustangs can click on all cylinders, then the sky is truly the limit. Realistically, I think we have the opportunity to win the league,” Bycroft said. “I think that is an honest expectation that we can have.” If the Mustangs can play to their potential, they will set themselves up in a prime position to advance to state. With the new playoff system in place, as league champions, Iola would need to win only two games at its sub-state tournament to advance to state. Iola’s first home game of the season is Dec. 11 against Burlington. GAME DAY & MATCH / WINTER 2019

CHANGING OF THE GUARD Four new faces to fill starting five A transition could be on the horizon for the Iola High girls basketball team. The Fillies are losing four returning starters that include All-Pioneer League and leading scorer Madisyn Holloway. Senior Kelsey Morrison will be the solo returner from last year’s starting five. Last season, the Fillies finished fourth in the Pioneer League and bowed out of the sub-state tournament with a first round loss. Although the Fillies’ roster is full of youth, head coach Becky Carlson will have talented athletes available for her disposal on the court. Letter winners from last season include Ella Taylor, Rachel Bycroft, Becca Sprague, Elysia Kunkler, Lauryn Holloway and Hannah Gardner. Carlson emphasized that her core returners didn’t receive many minutes on the floor last season but pointed out their

4

GAME DAY & MATCH / WINTER 2019

success at junior varsity. Carlson hopes that style of play can translate as they make the jump to the varsity level. Another factor falling in favor for the Fillies is that Sprague, Holloway, and Gardner all competed for Iola during the volleyball season. Different sports, sure, but gaining chemistry in one form or the other will only lead to stronger communication in a basketball setting.

“They are good athletes, and very coachable,” Carlson said. “I used to coach volleyball, and I watched the girls this season. They all knew where they were supposed to be. All of them are very smart and extremely hard workers.”

How the Fillies will operate for the 2019-20 season is still in the works. Carlson is willing to change her philosophy from season to season depending on her athletes. Expect the Fillies to push the ball down the court and execute their offense in transition once they find their go-to ball handler. Last season it was Spanish foreign exchange student Claudia Castellanos Rodrigo. This season’s floor general is still up in the air. “I’d like to push the ball a little bit, but you also have to have girls who can push the ball up the court. Also, you have to be able to rebound, so everything has to fit in,” Carlson said. “I’m excited because I think we will have a good inside-outside game.

We have some strong post players, and those who can shoot the ball.” Carlson highlighted the ability of Morrison, Gabby Lampe, and Gabby Richards to shoot for a high percentage. Richards has played bits and pieces since her freshman year due to a nagging knee injury. The key for the Fillies this season will be to take each practice, scrimmage and game in stride. League champion teams are not built overnight, and a squad with little varsity experience will take a few weeks of games to find its groove.

ESTABLISHING AN IDENTITY Cubs lean on defense

Last year was an up-and-down season for the Cubs. Humboldt finished the season with an 11-9 overall record, and advanced to the second round of the sub-state tournament, losing in a tightly contested overtime game. The Cubs have lost four starters from last season, with senior guard Conor Haviland the only returner. Although the Cubs may lack experience, head coach David Taylor plans to hit the floor running unlike last season, where the Cubs struggled to find their rhythm until the season’s later stages. “We were a work in progress all season last year,” Coach Taylor said. “We never knew what we were going to on any given night until late in the season. That was uncharacteristic of the program. We hang our hat on defending and rebounding, and we were not consistently doing those things every night out.” Other key returners will be senior guard Isiah Coronado and a pair of senior post players in Josh Hull and Taylor Lassman. Last season, the Cubs were full of new faces, which will be the case again this year.

Humboldt Cubs Connor Haviland drives to the basket.

Taylor highlighted that although the Cubs will be inexperienced on the varsity floor, he hopes that those who competed in JV games last season are knowledgeable in the system, and ready to make the jump. The Cubs won’t have a lot of size other than Hull and Lassman. Taylor hopes Lassman will be healthy after missing some time in Humboldt’s closing stages of the football season. The Cubs will implement a full-court press to cause turnovers and score points in transition to avoid running an immense amount of half-court offensive sets. “We need to all be on the same page, and not allow individual goals outweigh team goals and success,” Taylor said. “Plus, have a firm grasp of what the program is based on, which is defense and rebounding, which is also something as players they can control.” The expectations for the Cubs will remain the same for this season: a Tri-Valley League trophy, and a trip to the state tournament. Evidently, they have work to do before either of the goals become a reality. If Humboldt is able to get back to the

8

GAME DAY & MATCH / WINTER 2019

roots of Taylor’s coaching points, then the Cubs could return to a high finish in the ultra-competitive Tri-Valley League. “If you continue to work hard every day in practice and hang your hat on defense and rebounding, you will always have a chance to be successful,” Taylor said. “We need to instill that back into the players in the program. That was the sole reason we had an up-and-down season.”

Jada Dangerfield looks for an open teammate.

FINDING THE RIGHT FORMULA Humboldt girls look to rebuild The Lady Cubs finished last season with a 13-7 record. What many teams would consider a strong season, was Humboldt’s least impressive mark under head coach Aubrey Jones. Still, the Lady Cubs finished second in the Tri-Valley League but will lose six seniors from a year ago. “When you do the math, those seniors accounted for 87.7% of our scoring,” Jones said. “We have some big roles and shoes to fill for this season.” Jones will count on seniors Emma Johnson and Winter Snyder, along with junior Jada Dangerfield. The trio received the most playing time last year at the varsity level, and will be expected to have an increased impact. According to Jones, Johnson has a knack of being in the right place at the right time through her scrappy style of play. Her skillset will set the tone for the Lady Cubs defensively. While Johnson’s home will be on the wing, Dangerfield and Snyder will control the paint on both ends of the court. With a youthful squad, Jones said her approach for the early stages of the season will be different from what she has incorporated in previous seasons. Fundamentals will be stressed along with getting players acclimated to new roles, which can be a process. “I don’t think it will be difficult for them to get in the rhythm of things, but I think it will be an adjustment for them to step into bigger shoes,” Jones said. “I have had young groups that have had to step in and do it before. I just haven’t had that many young kids at once come in.”

A key focus for the Lady Cubs will be practicing their press break off the inbound. Humboldt will have to replace graduating guards Aricah McCall, Kaylie Johnson, Mogan Mauk, Maggie Johnson and Savanna Pucket. Jones has confidence the girls will make strides throughout the season. Her motto for the 2019-20 season is “Overcome.” With a youthful team, the Lady Cubs have adversity glaring them in the face, but their strong mindset has them hungry for success.

HERE’S TO A GREAT SEASON, CUBS!

“Winter and Jada are definitely more of the powerful post players that you want inside,” Jones said. “Both she and Jada have big scoring capabilities. “

MVHS Wildcats

Wesley Lowder slows down an opposing defender.

COLE WORLD

MVHS grad plans to build program The Wildcats won only one game last season. Hampered by size and youth, the Marmaton Valley boys were unable to find the winning formula. This year, however, they are bigger and older and are pinning their hopes on 2019-20. Former Wildcat and now assistant football coach Gavin Cole is prepared to enter his first year as head coach for the Wildcat hoopers. In the past, the Wildcats have taken a more half-court approach offensively. This year Cole plans to push the pace. Before implementing his philosophy, Cole has to get his players

12

adjusted to the daily practice routine. “It takes time,” Cole said. “Sometimes you have to take a step back, and I definitely want to take things slow enough so that they are understanding everything. Putting a little more time in the early weeks will help us eventually get things going.” The Wildcats will be without their floor manager Collin Dudley for the season. Dudley picked up a severe season-ending injury in the Wildcats’ final regular season football game against Chetopa. Cole will rely on senior Ty Scharff to manage the middle along with providing on-court leadership. Senior Bo Knavel received playing time last winter and will see his role increased this season. Cole described Knavel as a hard worker, and someone he can count on for consistency. Brothers William and Wesley Lowder — the team’s only juniors — can expect to see expanded roles. William will be counted on to score from the inside, although he can play on the wing. Underclassmen will have to play a big role for Marmaton Valley, and Cole expects six sophomores to come out. Sophomore Quincy Adams will be relied on to handle the point guard duties and is finally healed from an injury that prevented him from participating in last season. “Quincy is one of those kids that loves the game,” Cole said. “He puts in a lot of extra time on his own. He’s one of the gym rats that shoots the ball a little bit better because they are always shooting. They handle it a little bit better because they are always out on the rock dribbling in the driveway.” In order to find success, Marmaton Valley must achieve the most basic aspect of basketball: simply put the ball in the basket. Last season, they struggled to do so and put up only 15 points in their final game of the season. Cole plans to make that his first point of emphasis. “There may be times where we struggle to put the ball in the hoop,” Cole said. “We have to control the things that we can, and try to find easy shots and not settle for outside looks. We have to put ourselves in situations where we can attack and get easier baskets, whether that be through the free-throw line or finding shots within a smaller distance.”

“It feels really good to be back,” Cole said. “I know we have a while to develop our style of play, and how we really want to go about things. I’m looking forward to it.”

MVHS TWO REGIMES Wildcats Ulrich and Bagshaw split coaching duties

The Wildcats’ head coaching seat was vacant until Dan Ulrich agreed to the position on Nov. 11. In a peculiar situation, Ulrich will be at the helm until Dec. 14, when Sherri Bagshaw will resume her role as head coach, which she has held the previous two seasons. Ulrich is no stranger to the sidelines at Marmaton Valley High. He was the boys basketball coach for five years in two different stints. Ulrich slowed down since becoming a father but is ready to get back into the swing of things, even though it is only temporary. “I’m very excited to get with it and work with the girls,” Ulrich said. “I hope they do well, and I will hand the keys off and believe they will continue to do well.” The bright side for the Wildcats is they are losing only one player from last season’s team. Headlining the returners is senior Bailey Griffeth, who will use her athleticism to get to the rim and shut down opposing defenders. Ulrich expects to see production from Mykayla Ard in the post along with sister Aly Ard. Although the Wildcats have individual talent, the Wildcats success will depend on how they work as a team. Ten freshmen have signed up to play for the Wildcats this season, and were undefeated at the middle school level. Marmaton Valley will have talent, but it is just a matter of getting the mix of veterans and youngsters on the same page. “It is always a challenge of how you are going to get kids to mix together,” Ulrich said. “At the end of the day, you are focused on the same goal, and that is becoming the best team you can be, so those things tend to take care of themselves.” Ulrich emphasized that he has been on the same page with Bagshaw. Ulrich will implement Bagshaw’s inbound plays, and will execute a motion offense. Defensively, the Wildcats will have the option to run zone or man-to-man schemes. The beginning of the season will be an adjustment period as the freshmen build their chemistry with those who have been in the program previously. As the season progresses, Ulrich expects the Wildcats to compete, and hopefully make a run at the Three Rivers League title.

14

GAME DAY & MATCH / WINTER 2019

Bailee Griffith prepares to fire a shot.

“I have an idea of who is going to step up, but as far as naming them, I don’t like to individualize them,” Ulrich said. “We need to get the most out of each person, period. Your sixth, seventh or eighth player may be the won that hits the game winner. Anyone who is on the court can contribute, so we have to get the most out of everybody.”

NEW FACES, SAME TRADITION Inexperienced seniors look to find chemistry. The Wildcats will return zero starters from last season’s team that was crowned champion of the Three Rivers League for the third consecutive season. Fresh faces on the court aren’t the only thing to change for Yates Center in 2019-20. Jeremy Neville will take over on the sidelines as head coach, most previously holding the role as head coach for Uniontown High football. Seven seniors and several juniors will return, but few of those players have received varsity action. Neville highlighted that it will be a process for his players to not only get acclimated to the varsity level, but also understand his style of play. The Wildcats intend to push the ball in transition, which will rely on strong emphasis to rebound at the defensive end. When Yates Center is in the half-court, Neville plans to implement a modified triangle offense, which can be complex. Luckily, over 30 students have signed up to take part in Wildcat basketball. Expect tough competition within the squad through the early stages of the season, as they try to learn the offense to earn a place in the rotation.

Yates Center will be without 6’4” forward Aaron King, who signed to play basketball at Kansas Wesleyan. Although the Wildcats lost all of last year’s starters due to graduation, Neville highlighted the work ethic of those returning, stating that they have made it an emphasis to spend time in the weight room. Reece Solander, Connor Griffith, Caden Graham, Cade DeWitt, Tytan Smoot, Trent Burton and Jaymond Rice are the six seniors expected to lead the Wildcat rebuild. Juniors Easton Reynolds will also be called upon to play a role in the guard position. These seven seniors have been around for three league titles, and plan to make their final hoorah a replicate of the three previous seasons. “The one thing I’ve noticed since I got to Yates Center is that kids want to play basketball,” Neville said. “The challenge is taking kids who are inexperienced on the varsity floor, and turning that into our style of play. It is going to look different than it did with Aaron King and other experienced seniors that were on the floor last season.” Hitting the ground running will be a challenge, Neville admits. More than likely, Yates Center will start slowly in the early stages of the season, but expect the Wildcats to be in contention throughout the season due to their depth. What they lack in experience, will be made up for in grittiness which Neville plans to implement in his squad.

Lady Cats

Girls look to improve offense with defense

The Lady Cats will be looking for answers in the 2019-20 season. Yates Center will return only four players from last season’s 8-1 finish in the Three Rivers League as they hope to piece together another winning season. The Lady Cats are losing four starters from a season ago, with senior Madelynn Collins the solo returner. Collins, the daughter of head coach Abigail Collins, will play an integral role. Last season, Madelelynn averaged 11 PPG along with 6 RPG. The Lady Cats finished second in the Three Rivers League in 2018-19 but were defeated in the first round of sub-state, a disappointing end to a successful 13-6 season. Abigail expects Madelynn to be a leader on the court for the upcoming season, which will be vital. More than likely, the Lady Cats will be littered with youth, and some underclassmen will be fighting for minutes in the rotation. The three other returners for Yates Center are junior Liberty Cavender, along with sophomores Morgan Collins and Addison Solander, “Morgan played a lot of varsity last year and will have to step up this year. Liberty and Addison will also have to play big roles this year,” Coach Collins said. “They will be joined by a group of freshmen that will have to step right into varsity action. I feel like I have an athletic group of girls that will work very hard.” The key for the Lady Cats will be to set up their offense with solid play on the defensive end. With many inexperienced players in line to earn minutes in the rotation, scoring the basketball in the half-court, and working through sets will be a new process to unravel.

Taylor Jacobs looks for the rebound.

Best Wishes To All Our Area

“I am going to emphasize defense and hustle,” Coach Collins said. “We are going to have to find our strengths and build on them and work hard to improve our weaknesses. We are going to have to hit the boards and be very aggressive.”

It may be tough for the Lady Cats to repeat last season’s success, but this season will rest on their growth as a team. If Yates Center’s underclassmen are able to get acclimated to the speed of play, and understand their assignments on defense, then perhaps they can turn that into points in transition. Surely, it will take time for the Lady Cats to find the winning formula in the early stages of the season, but expect them to challenge late in games. As everyone knows, defense is the ultimate key to success over the course of a season.

Crest Lancers

RECIPE FOR SUCCESS Colony hoopers seek plus .500 season Depth destroyed any hopes of a Lancer playoff run last season. Crest rotated six players in games throughout the course of the season, and finished with an 8-13 record overall with a 5-6 mark in the Three Rivers League. The Lancers will have to deal with the loss of three-time first team All-Three Rivers League Hayden Hermreck, whose talents landed him on the roster at Allen Community College. Although head coach Travis Hermreck’s rotation this season may not be top-heavy, the depth the Lancers will have in the 2019-20 season should lead to more success than last year. Junior Jacquez Coleman will return to the floor after a one-year absence, and so will 6’2” junior Kobey Miller. Coleman and Miller will join returning starters Zack

Beckmon, Tyson Hermreck and Ethan Prasko. Hermreck highlighted that the Lancers will look to push the pace in transition, and spread the floor when setting up their half-court offense. The five-out offense gives Crest the ability to drive and kick, allowing shooters to have open looks.

“Losing Hayden in a 1A school, a 6’5” kid who can shoot it and jump out of the gym is hard to replace,” Hermreck said. “Our individual talent is going to be down, but our team talent and team depth is much better than the last few years.”

If the Lancers decide to go big, they have 6’4” junior Ben Prasko available to do so. Hermreck has options at his disposal, and it is a big relief from the limited roster he dealt with last season. Hermreck is optimistic about the Lancers’ chances at having a winning season, and making a run for the Three Rivers League title. Yates Center has dominated the Three Rivers League, earning three consecutive league titles. With the Wildcats in a rebuilding season, first place in the league is now up for grabs. The optimism is high in Colony, as the Lancers are coming off of a successful football season that saw them reach the regional round in 8M-II. Gridiron stars Tyson, Beckmon, and Rogers

plan on carrying the winning mentality over to basketball. “The kids are fired up for basketball,” Hermreck said. “The kids have a chip on their shoulder, and Tyson and Zack are the ring leaders of the group. They are tired of not being any good. We’ve averaged almost 14 wins a season since 2007, but the last three years we have averaged seven wins a season.” Hermreck admits that there are going to be some growing pains in the early stages of the season. It will take some time for chemistry to build, and turnovers to slowly decrease in number. But the goal of making a playoff run and finishing high in the league is a complete possibility for the Lancers this season.

Lady Lancers

STEP BY STEP

Lindsey Godderz heads down the court.

Building on last season’s momentum The 2018 season brought smiles to the faces of head coach Megan Mason’s Lady Lancers. Crest finished with a 9-12 overall record, the best finish in Mason’s three years in charge of the program. The challenge this season will be to replace Regan Godderz, Jewel Armstrong, Camryn Strickler, and Cassie Bowen, all four who started for the Lady Lancers last season. Rylee Beckmon will be the solo returner of last year’s starting five, but is still recovering from a broken arm she obtained during volleyball season. Beckmon and Aubree Holloran will be counted on to score, and provide on-court leadership. The pair will be expected to get the four freshmen along with two first-year players acclimated to the pace of practice, and Crest’s style of play. Thirteen girls are signed up to play basketball for the Lady

Lancers this season, which is a major boost from last season’s numbers. The Lady Lancers only had nine girls last season, making it impossible to hold five-on-five scrimmages. Mason emphasized that the numbers will help the Lady Lancers improve throughout the year.

“I’m so excited, because now we can scrimmage and run through stuff with a defense,” Mason said. “It has been hard the last two years just practicing against air, and this year I won’t have to practice as much. In the past I’d play defense, or get down low and post them up if I had to.”

With an inexperienced group at her disposal, Mason will make communication the focal point in the early stages of the season. “I know a lot of the girls who are new don’t talk a lot, so talking on the court is something we are going to have to work on,” Mason said. “I feel a lot of the girls don’t think about what they have to do, so we will focus on how to view the court. One of the things I’ve done since I’ve been here is give the girls scenarios, and all their options so they can learn how to be playmakers.” Expect Crest to push the pace, and score in their transition offense. Last season the Lady Lancers could push the pace only so quickly, Mason said, due to the limited number of reserves to provide fresh legs. Defensively, the Lady Lancers will not have much height in the inside, but will utilize a full-court press to force opposing teams into careless mistakes leading to turnovers. Crest will fully intend

Although Crest may be loaded with inexperience, Mason believes the turning point for Lady Lancer basketball is on the horizon. “I think this program just needs to know that every year we are getting better,” Mason said. “Each year we are getting better, and getting a taste of success. I think they are starting to buy in that they can be better than what the norm is.”

for their defense to lead to easy baskets on the offensive end. “I think with the girls returning, our strength will be our aggression,” Mason said. “With the younger girls, I’m not sure because I don’t know them very well. But I did see some promise over the summer, once they get their greenness out of them, they will be great.”

SCC Titans

Boys to change up offense Coaches have X’s and O’s they prefer, but in small-school 1A basketball, sometimes you have to roll with the punches. Head coach Jay Applegate prefers a high-low game in the post, but with his dominant post players graduating, Applegate now has to create a new winning formula. Last season, the Titans rolled to a 14-8 season, losing in the second round of the sub-state tournament.

“We lost a lot of height from last year,” Applegate said. “I like to play big, but we aren’t going to be able to do it this year.” Nathan Borntrager looks to pass.

Returning for the Titans will be senior Cooper Harred, who starred for SCC at quarterback over the fall. Harred may not have the size to be a force down low, but he will be a bruiser and provide the Titans with strong on-court leadership. At the moment, Harred is injured, but Applegate expects him to slide into the starting five after Christmas. Sophomore Wade Gleue will also return for the Titans and is suited for a starting role. Nathan Borntrager will be a starter, providing SCC a threat from beyond the arc.

The Titans intend to slow down the pace of the game in order to create the best possible shot. Applegate admits that changing his style of play is a challenge, but one he is looking forward to. “I’m looking forward to the challenge, and I know our kids will work hard,” Applegate said. “They are going to have to be in

shape, which is not going to be a problem for us. This season, we just aren’t going to have the size or the numbers, but it will be interesting to see how the season progresses.” Twelve players are expected to come out for SCC basketball, which is slightly less than the norm. Although the numbers may be low, expect the Titans to play disciplined and to steadily progress as the season moves forward.

Lady Titans

PIECING THE PUZZLE

Bryleigh Copeland shoots.

Experience and talented youth are on their side Head coach Jeff True will have the perfect mix-and-match of talented upperclassmen and incoming freshmen ready to make an impact for the Titans during the 2019-20 season. SCC is coming off a subpar season, finishing 8-12 overall, ending their season with a loss against Olpe in the second round of regionals. Thirteen girls are on the Titan roster, with senior Reed Szambecki highlighting the returners. Last season, Szambecki averaged nearly 14 points per game and dominated for the Titans down low. Sophomore Kyra Ohl will partner with Szambecki in the paint. Despite being on the small side, Ohl’s grittiness will get her in the paint, said True. As far as the backcourt, sophomore Bryleigh Copeland will return after an ACL injury last season. Juniors Emersyn Hall and Makayli Walters are both shooting guards returning from last season, providing the Titans with some depth on the wing. True said though the team has a good nucleus, it is also looking for an impact from the freshmen. Jalea True stands at nearly six feet tall, and will be able to provide Szambecki a breather when needed. True expects Jalea to become an impact

player. Ross Snovelle and Josie Weers both featured for the Titans over the fall during volleyball. True hopes to utilize their athleticism, and hopes they will be able to cause turnovers when deployed to full-court press. “They are a good group,” True said. “They get along well, practice hard, and are a very fun group to coach. They will come to practice every day, and give it everything they’ve got. We probably won’t be a state caliber team this year, but if there were still two divisions for 1A, and things were to work out just right, we may make it as division two.”

“Taryn Lather will be a utility player for us,” True said. “She will play some guard, but will also be able to go down low for us. She is one of those girls who would run into a wall if you told her to do it. She always gives 110%.”

In the past, True has been able to press opponents on defense, which he won’t have the luxury this season. The Titans’ starting five will feature more size and grit opposed to athleticism, and expect SCC to operate in the half-court, and look for the best shots on the offensive end. If the Titans do feel the need to speed the pace of the game, True will turn to his freshmen pair of Snovelle and Weers to do so. True’s goal for the season is to continually improve, which he accomplished during volleyball. SCC finished 13-22, but found their rhythm late in the season, and advanced to the sub-state tournament after finishing second in their region. If the Titans can replicate that effort, then these hoopers have a chance for a special 2019-20 season.
