Iraq Crisis Response
2014
SITUATION REPORT Highlights IOM estimates that the number of IDPs in the KRG (as of 17 August 2014) is over 1.2 million (source: IOM Displacement Tracking Matrix 14 August). Local authorities are over stretched and under resourced, unable to effectively deal with the crisis. As a result, more Northern governorates are now encouraging IDP’s to travel south. The majority of displaced live in dismal circumstances finding shelter in abandoned buildings, schools, mosques and amongst host communities. While IOM and UN partners provide Non Food Items (NFIs), food items, critical medicine and shelter, families urgently require additional shelter, health care and financial assistance. Turkoman Shiites Trapped in Amirli An estimated 15,000 to 20,000 people, primarily Turkoman Shiites, remain inside Amirli, in the Tooz district of Salah al-Din, situated 175 km north of Baghdad and 200 km south of Erbil. Roads have been rendered inaccessible since early July as Islamic State (IS) forces surround the area, occupying a 25 km radius. Although the Iraqi Air Force has airlifted some out, people inside Amirli are unable to leave on their own The humanitarian situation in Amirli is deteriorating quickly. Sources have reported severe food shortages and limited fuel and power severely impacting water availability. Medical facilities lack even the most basic supplies. The UN has been unable to access this area to provide critical assistance. Roads to Amirli are not accessible and the UN has been unable to conduct a full assessment or deliver humanitarian supplies. To date, humanitarian assistance is only possible via military air operations (Iraqi or International).
