In the governorates of south and central Iraq, thousands more displaced families arrive seeking aid due to instability and ongoing military operations elsewhere in the country. Many have lost family and friends to armed conflict or kidnappings. Most are forced to flee their homes with little to no personal effects or cash reserves, and many live with relatives and friends. As in the northern governorates, displacement numbers in southern and central Iraq continue to increase exponentially as Iraqis are forced to flee conflict and violence. IOM Iraq remains committed to assisting those in need while gathering data about displacement in order to rapidly assess the situation as it develops. On 31 August the IOM Baghdad Office in coordination with Al Sadir Local Council and the Baghdad Provincial Council, distributed 200 family nonfood item (NFI) kits to an estimated 6,000 IDPs in Sadir City, a historically dangerous suburb of Baghdad. In coordination with local councils such as the Al Sadir City Local Council in Baghdad, IOM was able to identify a large number of families from Ninewa, Kirkuk, Salah Al-Din and Diyala in order to assess needs on the ground. At the Baghdad distribution, authorities from the Baghdad Provincial Council NGO Committee attended to the distribution to help IOM RART teams compile a list of beneficiaries, coordinate and confirm the drop point for the distribution. In addition, five members of a local community policing team have helped IOM verify the names of the beneficiaries. IOM Rapid Assessment and Response Teams (RART) continue to monitor displacement in Baghdad and surrounding areas.
