AMERICAN VALUES INDIVIDUALISM & INDEPENDENCE
Generally, American education systems provide many opportunities for students to study their individual passions. Americans place great emphasis on individuality and do not necessarily believe that they represent their families, but instead exist independent from these factors. Many Americans value their independence. Teenagers from traditional American households are often expected to leave home once they graduate from high school. school. People in the United States value freedom from unnecessary government interference. The space to population ratio in the U.S. is vastly different from many countries—people in the United States are generally used to living in larger spaces and therefore have a different sense privacy. Cultural differences can be scary, but don’t let that stop you from making friends here! There are many kind people in the U.S. who are just as excited to meet new people as you are! 10

OFF-CAMPUS
While most students will choose to live in the university’s residence halls, some prefer to live off-campus. When hunting for a place to rent in Iowa City, there are a few important things to know and consider. The Search When looking for an apartment, it’s good to start early. Look in in the fall or in the spring for new places. If moving, it’s a good idea to have your new place set up well before you move out of your old one. Leases & Deposits Remember to always read your lease before signing it. The lease will contain rules and stipulations for living in the apartment you’re renting. Almost all leases are for a full year. Before leasing an apartment, landlords require a deposit from the renters, usually equal to one month’s worth of rent. This deposit will be given back to you at the end of the lease, though they maintain the right to refuse to return the deposit if they are unsatisfied with the condition of the apartment. Sub-leases Some people only need a place for a short period of time. Since most leases run for a year, you can instead sublease—this is when you rent from a tenant instead of from a landlord. Students looking to sublease can often find people willing to rent out their apartments on Craigslist, Facebook and other forms of social media. Finding a place to live in a foreign country can be overwhelming. The University has a few departments that can help with the entire process. ISSS is also more than the “immigration office. Although helping students and scholars with immigration issues is part of their work, with over 10,000 in-person visits to advisors each year, they are also heavily involved in intercultural and adjustment programming for students and scholars. They provide cultural and intercultural awareness training for staff and faculty, and support the Iowa City area community as a welcoming place for international visitors.
