Study Abroad 2011-2012 Total Number of UI Students Studying Abroad For national Open Doors reporting, 1,227 University of Iowa students studied, worked, or conducted research abroad for credit between fall 2011 and summer 2012. Open Doors does not include international students who study abroad or students who were involved in traveling abroad for short-term conference travel, athletics, and programs aimed at recent graduates. In previous years, all of these categories of students were reported to Open Doors. This year they were not.
This represents a 5.6% increase from the previous year when 1,279 UI students participated in such activities. • 978 UI undergraduate students participated in these activities abroad, a 12.5% increase from 2010-11 (869). • 373 UI graduate students participated in these activities, a 9% decrease from 2010-11 (410).
Because the UI sees international degree-seeking students’ experiences abroad as valuable, for the remainder of this document that group will be included in the total students participating in “study abroad.” International students studying abroad in their home country are not included.

With a few exceptions, UI students can study abroad on any program which yields credit from an accredited U.S. or foreign university. When UI does not have an established relationship with a program or foreign university, these are referred to as non-UI programs. In addition, 448 students from other colleges and universities participated in study abroad programs administered by the University of Iowa (83% of those (373) participated in the CIMBA consortial programs administered by the Tippie College of Management). Those 448 students are not included in this report.
