About APDA The Iowa Chapter of the American Parkinsons Disease Association (APDA) is a 501(c)(3) organization. Our mission is to ease the burden and to find a cure for Iowans impacted by Parkinson’s disease across Iowa. The Iowa Chapter of the APDA, centralized in Des Moines, is the state chapter of the American Parkinson Disease Association, Inc., which is headquartered in Staten Island, New York. The Iowa Chapter was founded in 2003 and serves the state through various programming, support groups, educational conferences, and the Information and Referral Center. The APDA is the country’s largest grassroots Parkinson’s organization that focuses its energies on research, patient services, education and raising public awareness about the disease. APDA supports eight Centers for Advanced Research, and a national network of regional Information and Referral (I&R) Centers, chapters, and support groups.

Regional and National Impact Parkinson’s disease affects over 1.5 million people in the United States. Over 60,000 people are diagnosed every year. The symptoms of the disease decrease overall quality of life and can interfere with daily activities to the point where someone may be unable to continue with their livelihood and be unable to take care of their family. The economic burden of Parkinson’s disease is at least $14.4 billion a year in the United States. An additional $6.3 billion is the result of indirect costs, such as missed work or loss of a job for patient or family member who is helping with care, long-distance travel to see a neurologist or movement disorder specialist, as well as costs for home modifications, adult day care, and personal care aides. It is estimated that 20,000 people are diagnosed in the state of Iowa; the Midwest is disproportionately impacted by the disease, possibly due to the high use of pesticides and herbicides used in commercial farming.

How the APDA Helps Living with Parkinson’s is a complete life adjustment. The Iowa Chapter serves to help individuals, families and health professionals understand Parkinson’s better through the following services: • A tri-annual magazine that has a readership of over 3500 people • Three annual educational symposiums in Des Moines, Sioux City and Eastern Iowa • Establishing over 35 support groups in the state • Funding training for Parkinson’s exercise programs • Developing programs, such as transportation and respite care, that assist individuals and their families • Funding an Information and Referral Center for the state The Information and Referral Center serves as the regional hub which processes requests received by mail, phone and on-site visits. The community is able to ask questions, request free information and materials regarding Parkinson’s disease, and get referrals to support groups and Parkinson’s specialists in the state.
