President’s Message

Become a Snowmobile Friendly Community The ISSA has established a program for Iowa communities to be designated as “snowmobile friendly.” The vision is for Iowa communities and local snowmobile clubs to partner together and establish “snowmo- Making bile-friendly communities” Tracks where the club and community work together to set parameters, establish access and initiate communication channels to promote winter recreation and tourism for Iowa communities and opportunities for snowmobilers to safely and enjoyably access those communities. In order for a city, town or area community to be deemed “snowmobile friendly,” it will have to agree to a partnership between the local snowmobile club, community, businesses and law enforcement and have agreed to participate in a criteria set forth by the ISSA. The goal is to promote Iowa Winter Tourism by assisting with snowmobile access to the community for local residents to access state snowmobile primary and secondary trails and to allow access for snowmobilers visiting their community to visit the restaurants, hotels, fuel stops, repair facilities, and other businesses. The local snowmobile club will be available to work with community leaders to establish and maintain trails to access the

community and will partner with local law enforcement and emergency services to provide assistance for search and rescue, emergency transportation and law enforcement assistance when needed. Snowmobile Friendly Communities will be promoted in ISSA information and publications and will be positioned to enjoy the significant economic impact that snowmobiling brings to communities which welcome them. The ISSA Tourism Committee will accept, Jim Willey review and approve ISSA President Snowmobile Friendly Community applications. Guidelines must be met and agreed to for any community to receive the Iowa Snowmobile Friendly Community designation. The communities which are awarded the designation will be presented with a certificate from the local snowmobile club and the ISSA recognizing their status. Each community will be given two metal signs to post at the roads entering the community, and the community will be allowed to purchase additional signs as needed. See page 5 for additional criteria.

Region 8 Director Report

Welcome to the Heart of Iowa Greetings from Region 8, right here in the heart of Iowa. My name is Ron Sienknecht, and I have been the ISSA Region 8 Director for the past two years. I grew up enjoying snowmobiling as a child and as a youth. My life led me to the regions of no snow for quite a few years. I found my way back to Iowa and started snowmobiling again and have enjoyed every minute of it. Region 8 covers an area from Highway 20 on the North to Interstate 80 on the South. Interstate 35 designates the west border of the region. The East border is marked by Highways 218 and 150. The trails of the region are a mix of farmland, ditches and reclaimed rail-beds. They are maintained by three clubs: the Central Iowa Snowmobilers, Tri-County Snowmobile Association and the Jasper County Ditch Bangers. When conditions allow, the trails are well taken care of by the clubs and offer a nice mix of riding with some pleasant

views and nice stops. The trails of Region 8 make it easy to connect to trails in the neighboring regions. This interconnectivity allows easy access to many others areas of the state. Come and enjoy the trails in Central Iowa, use them as a starting point or use them to pass through on a high-mileage ride. But either way, come and enjoy our trails. Please support the Ron businesses and towns Sienknecht that support us. Region 8 To all you club Director members throughout the state, I want to give a big “Thank You.” The ISSA could not do it without out you. Stay involved, be active and get others involved.

ISMA Report Card

Snowmobile Sales Up; Enthusiasm Continues for Industry A long-lasting winter and continued enthusiasm and interest in snowmobiling powered snowmobile sales to increase worldwide to 144,601 new sleds sold this past year. This is an increase of over 15,000 units, which is a 12 percent gain from last year. Sales in the United States were flat at 48,536 new snowmobiles sold, while sales in Canada rose over eight percent to 44,022 new sleds sold. The snowmobile community is optimistic following the above-average snowfall throughout most of North America this past season. The 2014 manufacturers spring snowmobile shows reported dramatic increases in attendance. In many of the spring shows, visitation was up over 30 percent. Spring orders are up and that points to a good 2014 sales year! The snowmobile industry reports an increase in registered snowmobiles in North America to approximately two million registered sleds. Increased registration in Northern Europe and Russia continues, and there are over 700,000 registered units in the European community and Russia. Snowmobile-related tourism also increased in North America and beyond. This can be seen in economic impact studies conducted throughout North America by major business colleges and universities. Miles ridden by snowmobilers (which is always predictive of economic impact) showed a 20 percent increase in the 20122013 season. This is a result of good riding conditions and improved trail systems. The average age of a snowmobiler this past season was determined to be 43 years of age. The average age increased slightly due to the fact that many younger adults are struggling to pay off school loans and are struggling due to the slower growth of the economy. Surveys conducted by ISMA have shown that slightly over 70 percent of first-time buyers in the snowmobile market purchased a used snowmobile. Many of them are young adults and they move on to purchase a new snowmobile later in life. The majority of snowmobilers in North America are club members and/or association-federation members (over 50 percent). These active, involved, outdoor enthusiasts build the trails and support snowmobiling access. Snowmobilers are also active charity fundraisers who raised over $3.4 million dollars for national charities last year. The Go Snowmobiling website at www.gosnowmobiling.org serves as another strong indicator for the interest in snowmobiling. This year, more than 4.4

million visited the Go Snowmobiling site. This is a 15 percent increase above last year. Statistics show that approximately 20 percent of those visitors are individuals who do not own a snowmobile but are expressing a great deal of interest in owning a snowmobile and going snowmobiling. It was also noted that approximately 20 percent of the visitors to the site visited the rental outlet pages of the site. Indications are that many of the individuals visiting the rental site do not own a snowmobile but want to rent one during their winter vacation. This activity and interest in renting bodes well for future sales and the growth in the Ed Klim snowmobile rental President, market. International Additional Snowmobile surveys have found that snowmobilers Manufacturers are active in many Association outdoor activities. Many snowmobilers are also boaters, motorcycle riders, camping enthusiasts, hunting enthusiasts and general outdoor recreational activity participants. Many individuals have discovered that snowmobiling is a great recreational family activity in the winter. Many of those individuals are snowmobiling for reasons such as viewing the scenery, be with family and friends and to get away from the usual demands of life and be close to nature. The continued broad-based growth of the snowmobile community includes the increased number of visitors and exhibitors in snowmobile shows. States and provincial organizations continue to grow and expand club membership. Many organizations report that new trails are being developed to support the positive economic impact of snowmobiling and job growth for the rural community. Economic impact studies generated by universities in North America show that snowmobiling is growing in importance as part of the overall economic engine and job growth for winter tourism. Estimates show that snowmobiling now generates more than $30 billion dollars of economic activity in North America. The economic activity generated by snowmobiling provides many jobs and investment opportunities and generates considerable tax revenue for local governments which eagerly support snowmobiling.

New Year’s Trip to Western U.P.

Iowans on Location

by Cameron Hanson Coming off of four straight seasons of aboveaverage snowfall, snowmobilers in Iowa seemed to acquire a taste for early, sustained riding conditions, so when the winter two years ago spoiled that trend, a group of riders with ties to the central part of the state decided to take matters into their own hand and head north in search of rideable snow. It’s a good thing they did because the winter of 2011-12 ended with the third lowest snowfall total for the state since 2000, and the 1,200 miles the group of eight put on their sleds in the Western U.P. of Michigan in early 2012 accounted for most of the miles they accumulated that season. Landing in the Lake Gogebic area shortly after New Year’s weekend were Randy Stiles of Rockwell, Gordy Rohwedder of Marble Rock, Gary Hickle of Floyd, Craig Watson of Shell Rock, Jim Butler of Rudd, Bill Nuehring of Rockwell, Steve King of Marble Rock and Tim Cole of Spirit Lake, formerly of the Mason City area. Arriving at different intervals on Wednesday, Jan. 4, the group made base camp at a vacation home on the north end of Gogebic. Their timing was fairly decent. A New Year’s Day winter storm had just blanketed the area with more than a foot and a half of snow, and the region’s three groomers were out making good use of the fresh snowcover.

Lake Gogebic Serves as Trail Hub Able to ride in any direction from the lake, the group eagerly spent the first day heading northeast out of Bergland on Trail 13 past Rockland, intending to reach Houghton at the base of the Keweenaw Peninsula. This seasoned group of riders had been to this area several times before and had an idea of what to expect for riding conditions, as long as history would hold serve. This northernmost tip of Michigan is known particularly for its extraordinary trails due to a copious amount of lake-effect snow. The lower end of the peninsula averages around 220 inches of snow each year (compared to Iowa’s 32 inches), and some areas have received as much as 390 inches in one season. You can see why this group from snow-starved Iowa decided to head this way on their first day of vacation. After cruising through Rockland, the pack picked up the multi-use Bill Nicholls Trail which would lead them right to Houghton. Abandoned in 1972 by the Copper Range Railroad, this 40-mile stretch of rail-trail has served as a highway for snowmobilers since the mid-1970s. Originating from the south at Mass City, this corridor features scenic outlooks, three successive steel bridges over the Firesteel River and remnants of the area’s mining heritage. Unfortunately, on this day anyway, the jaunt to Houghton did not pan out as expected. Apparently the New Year’s Day winter storm around Gogebic did not reach into Keweenaw, and the temperatures that week were at or above freezing. (Imagine what the temperatures were like back at home if the mercury this far north in Michigan wasn’t much below 32 degrees.) Needless to say, the group could not escape the weather they thought they had left back in Iowa, and the snowcover on the trail thinned out before they reached Houghton. Defeated, they decided to backtrack south to Twin Lakes for a break at the Parkview Lodge and Grill. After dinner, they headed south and east on Trail 109, eventually picking up Trail 8 and back to Bergland. “In all my years of riding, I would have never thought we would have run out of snow at Houghton, but that’s precisely what happened,” Stiles said. “I guess that just shows you what kind of winter most us in the Midwest were dealing with that year.” Renewed Spirits The next morning, spirits were renewed with a plan to head in the opposite direction as the Continued on page 8 October 2013

U.P. Continued from page 7 previous day. From Gogebic, they squeezed the throttle and found much better riding south. Trail 1 led them to Marenisco for breakfast at the Wild River Café, and from there, it was east on Trail 2 and 107 through the Ottawa National Forest. At Kenton, they stopped for dinner at Up Chucks Bar and Grill before returning home for the night. The trails on the second day were so good that they made a return visit to Marenisco the following morning. However, after breakfast, they made an ill-fated decision to head northwest toward Wakefield, intending to make a loop back to Bergland. But like it had two days earlier, the further north they went, the thinner the trails became. “We ended up going too far north and the trail turned to moguls,” King recalled. “We then we got lost and ran out of snow, literally. For a while there we were just riding on a dusting of snow. I never expected to find myself in these conditions this far north.” The team eventually made it back to Merriweather for fuel before limping it back home Saturday night. Fortunately that night, a system moved through and brought with it a couple of inches of new snow. Trail reports from the north had improved by morning so Sunday brought another attempt to Houghton. “This time we made it and the trail conditions were more like we expected them,” Stiles said. “Outside of two disappointing afternoons, the trails around Gogebic were awesome throughout our five days. Not as good some other times I had been there, but they were tons better than what was waiting for us back home, which was nothing.”

Iowans on Location Boondocking Colorado’s Grand Mesa Franklin County Conservation Director Spends Part of February Out West Playing in the Powder by Jason Gooder Member, Iowa River Riders, Region 3 When visiting with other people who share the same enjoyment of snowmobiling as I do, the topic of discussion is usually about past adventures or planned trips. Stories vary from different areas of the United States according to the individual’s or the group’s riding preference. Some folks prefer the groomed trials of Wisconsin or the U.P. of Michigan, while some would rather spend time in the backcountry of the western U.S., carving through deep powder. Personally, I relate well with both styles of riding but prefer the backcountry and deep powder over trails. The toughest part of planning a trip for powder riding can be location. Which area should you visit? I have found that a particular backcountry area can be awesome one year, and a disappointment the next. This year our group contemplated several different areas. We spent a lot of time researching and visiting with different people trying to find “the spot.” You powder people know what I am talking Jason Gooder about…those areas that you see on film Franklin County where riders are blasting through deep Conservation powder, vast areas of untouched snow, Director sparsely spaced snow covered conifers…a

backcountry as well as providing relaxing scenic trips through the forests. The trails are, on average, 9,000 feet above sea level, cover 800 square miles and in an area that receives an average of 35 feet of snow annually are groomed regularly. First Topic of Discussion Although I have many memories from my trip to Grand Mesa last February, there are two topics that always rise to the top of discussion when I explain the Grand Mesa Experience. First discussion topic: The people of the area are extremely friendly and ready to help visitors get the best of Grand Mesa during their stay. We met many people on the trail who were always willing to stop and offer advice on how to get to those “spots” that would fulfill our hunt for un-carved powder. With the amount of snow Grand Mesa Receives annually, you are sure to find fresh uncarved areas. It is not hard. A little adventure off the trail and through a few trees and the Mesa will open up to large areas waiting your arrival. The memories that I relive as I write this article come rushing back. I can see the large meadows Continued on page 10

snowmobilers paradise. After filtering many choices through pros and cons, one area kept floating to the top: a place called Grand Mesa in Colorado. The Grand Mesa is located on the Western Slopes of the Colorado Rockies and is part of three National Forests. The Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre and Gunnison National Forests, combined, cover 3,161,900 acres. As a professional natural resource manager, I can’t help to mention the unique natural history provided by these areas. These forests host 10 wilderness areas, three congressionally designated Special Areas, six Special Heritage Areas, 12 rivers eligible for wild and scenic designations, six peaks over 14,000 feet, and vast roadless areas making perfect winter playgrounds for snowmobiling. The trail system is large, and offers riders access to the October 2013

Grand Mesa Continued from page 9 three to four feet deep with powder. The first time I arrived at one of these areas I couldn’t believe it; all I could say to myself was WOW. As I punched the throttle on my 154” Ski-Doo 800 Summit and made my first run through this amazing scene, I was hooked. I precisely remember leaning on one side then the other, laying the sled from side to side as large amounts of snow flew over the handle bars. As I rode I kept saying to myself, ‘I can’t believe how deep the snow is, and it is endless.’ After making a nice long run, I turned to see if the group was following. Sure enough, as I turned, the meadow was dotted with six other sleds having as much fun as I was. One of the things we would commonly talk about during a break was how long you could spend in one area with a group and rip powder. If hill climbing is in your blood, the Mesa also holds many challenges for you. I always wanted to try the slalom technique in deep powder as you make your way down a steep slope. The Mesa granted me this opportunity several times. Some successful, and

10

other times I found myself buried in snow, flagging the group to help me get unstuck. It all makes for good stories and laughs at the supper table. Western Hospitality The second discussion topic: The part of a trip that makes the experience more enjoyable. I am talking about the ability to have a good meal at the end of the day, unwind, converse about the day’s events, and get a good night sleep. A place to gas up the sled, and gather needed supplies before the next day’s adventure, your home away from home. The folks at Vega Lodge make these elements a priority. Hospitality and making sure your experience is memorable and pleasurable is the backbone of their business. On the threshold of wilderness and civilization many times the ability to shut off the cell phone and unplug simply because these devices don’t work, in my opinion, is all part of the vacation. However, Vega Lodge allows guests to use a land line to connect with loved ones back home and provides free WiFi for those of you who need to upload your pictures to Facebook. I would like to share a couple of stories of our stay at Vega Lodge and the gratitude they expressed. It was the beginning of day two, and that morning, we set off for breakfast to enjoy a plateful of goodness prepared by the chef at Vega Lodge. Owner Glenn Stoll came up and asked if we would like to join him on an excursion to check on a calf he was taking care of higher on the mountain for a neighbor. Due to snow depth, the calf was unable to make it down to lower elevations. Glenn was making sure it had food and water. Glen thought the trip would give us the ability to become more familiar with the area. Riding Off the Map That it did. Glenn is originally from Iowa but has lived in the Grand Mesa area for several years. His knowledge of the mountain took us to places we would have never seen, and locate some areas “off the map,” so-to-speak. This side trip was beautiful and offered some of the best scenery Grand Mesa has to offer. It also offered some of the best snow conditions we experienced so far on the trip. Upon arrival to the calf, we found him doing just fine…plump, round and healthy, thanks to Glen. Leaving the calf behind, Glenn took us on a different route, a route that was just as scenic and fun as the way up. However, on the way down back to the lodge, we experienced the inevitable, the dreaded breakdown. Thankfully we were close to the lodge. One rider in our group lost his clutch, never good especially on day two. Glenn and Vega Lodge came to the rescue again, helping us find a Ski Doo dealer that would be able to repair the rendered sled. Again, I can’t say enough of the hospitality, Glen let us use his personal truck and trailer to take the snowmobile into town and have it repaired. THANK YOU. In my mind, these are things that make you want to come back. Glenn and his staff go the extra mile, treat you like part of the team…Hawkeye to Hawkeye, Cyclone to Cyclone, which ever colors you fly. Vega Lodge is located near the town of Collbran, Colo., and resides on 30 acres of land overlooking Vega State Park and Vega Reservoir. Vega Reservoir is the largest body of water in the Grand Valley area. The lodge is your gateway to the Grand Mesa National Forest and the vast recreational opportunities it has to offer. Please visit www.vegalodge.com for more information. You will not be disappointed.

Something for Everyone ISSA 40th Birthday Bash to feature keynote speakers, informative seminars by Cameron Hanson he best way for ISSA members to RSVP for the upcoming 40th Anniversary Celebration at the 2013 ISSA Annual Convention in November is to register early and book their stay today at the Prairie Meadows Casino and Events Center in Altoona. Hotel rooms are currently blocked through the end of October, but come Nov. 1, they will be released, and convention organizers from the host club, the Saylorville Dam Snowmobile Club of Region 7, know they won’t last long after that point. “We seem to be off to a great start with our speakers and sponsors, so you won’t want to miss out on this year’s convention,” said Past ISSA President Gary Burger, a Saylorville club member. “Don’t forget to make your reservations early since Prairie Meadows sells out every weekend of the year. And be sure to ask for the ISSA convention rate.” “Everything seems to be going okay right now,” added ISSA ConDial (515) 957-3000 vention Planning Committee Chair to reserve your Steve Klinkefus. “Our speakers are booked and the meals have been room today! chosen, but there are still lots of little things to take care of. What I really need is ISSA members to register and book their hotel rooms as soon as possible.” Room rates are set at $99 per night, which is half off the regular room rate. Reservations are made independent of the registration by contacting the hotel directly at (515) 957-3000 or by visiting www.prairiemeadows.com. Convention registration runs $55 per person before Nov. 1 and $65 thereafter. To register, fill out the form on page 19. Encouraging snowmobilers to register now and book their rooms early helps the committee plan the number of meals and set up for the various seminars, presentations and ceremonies. If you have any questions on convention, please contact Klinkefus at (515) 2821447 or Burger at (515) 707-3000.

Appealing to all ages and genders As it is the ISSA’s 40th Anniversary this fall, the convention committee is planning several special seminars and guest speakers to commemorate the milestone. Klinkefus said every age and gender should find this year’s lineup appealing. On Saturday night, keynote speaker and legendary snowmobiler Brian Nelson is sure to give his insight on the evolution of the sport over the past four decades. The Minnesota native has worn several hats over the years in the industry and hasn’t lost his fervor for the sport yet. “Because this is our 40th Anniversary, we wanted to bring some-

A high-voltage electrician by day, Mesenbrink will thrill the banquet hall with videos of his high-flying antics as seen on Thunderstruck Films, while Chapman, a Canadian freerider and Internet blogger, will bring a woman’s perspective to moutain riding and extreme snowmobiling. “We really wanted to have something for the women to enjoy at convention, and while (Chapman) may appeal more to younger women, I think it’s important to provide that opportunity and get them involved at onvention,” Klinkefus said. “We also wanted someone who could talk about snowmobiling today and relate to the younger crowd, and Mesenbrink should appeal to them.” Chapman, who operates She Shreds Mountain Adventures in British Columbia, will also lead an afternoon seminar on Women in

New Vice President Expected at Saturday Morning Election

ISSA Vice President Thayne Lowman of North Liberty resigned his position unexpectedly in late September, citing “personal reasons” and a desire to travel more. “I am well at this time, but because I want to travel while I can, I do not feel it is good for the ISSA to have a part-time vice president or president,” he said in an email to the magazine. “By resigning at this time, the ISSA has time to elect a vice president who can serve as vice president for one year and then be ready as president in 2014. “I have enjoyed my last year, but I also know my time to travel is limited, and I still want to see so many places inside and outside the United States. I will still Lowman support the ISSA with my membership and will do what I can to aid in its mission.” The news came as a surprise to ISSA President Jim Willey and the rest of the board. Prior to his election at the 2012 ISSA Convention, Lowman had served as a Director At-Large on the board and helped recruit snowmobile clubs in unrepresented regions in the state. “We appreciate Thayne’s years of service to the ISSA and wish him well,” Willey said. An interim vice president will be named at the ISSA’s October board meeting, and the seat will be filled formally during Saturday morning elections at the 2013 ISSA Convention in Altoona. Whoever is elected vice president this fall will automatically assume the presidency in November of 2014. October 2013

Although subject to change, a tentative convention agenda appears on page 14. The seminars continue Sunday morning with the usual certification courses, including sessions for new and renewing groomer operators, youth safety classes and training for those club members who are interested in becoming a certified youth safety instructor. “All current IDNR groomer operators who were certified prior to June of 2012 need to recertify by June of next year,” reminded ISSA Region 5 Director Chris Willey, who coordinates the ISSA/IDNR Groomer Operator Training Program. Celebrating our heritage Sprinkled throughout convention weekend will be tributes and historical retrospectives on the ISSA over the past four decades. All past presidents in attendance will be honored at the banquet Saturday evening, and displays lining the Events Center hallways will help tell the ISSA story as well. In addition to the Snowmobile Iowa club displays, convention-goers can contribute to this walk down memory lane by bringing ISSA memorabilia to share. Past ISSA President Gary McVicker is coordinating this effort and called it a “great way to celebrate our heritage.” “We are looking for pictures, old convention programs, clothing patches and general information about the ISSA or its clubs from past years,” he said. “Hey, if you’re feeling brave enough, I invite you to wear your vintage snowmobile gear to the Friday night hospitality event. Let’s have some fun with this and create our own little fashion show.” If you are interested in bringing items for

display or have any other ideas, please contact McVicker at (641) 425-1375 or email him at gmcvic@yahoo.com. According to Klinkefus, vintage sleds are not needed as a display in the lobby is already planned. “This historical display could be one of the better things we could do to draw members and the general public to our convention this year,” added McVicker, who was also involved in the 30th Anniversary when the ISSA convention was held in Region 3. Sponsorships still needed Needless to say, the convention planning committee has made quite an investment in this year’s attractions, not the least of which were securing the out-of-state guest speakers and presenters. Organizers want to make this year’s convention an event to remember and are hoping outside revenue streams will help pick up the tab. So far, so good with more than $4,500 in sponsorship donations have been collected already. The host club Turn to page 16

by Cameron Hanson f there’s a record for the number of titles a man can hold in the snowmobile industry, Minnesota’s Nov. 22-24, 2013 Brian Nelson probably owns it. Prairie Meadows The lifelong snowmobiler has Casino amd Brian Nelson been a cross-country racer, a factory Events Center Keynote Speaker consultant, a dealer, a tour operator, a Altoona, IA Awards Banquet race promoter and a Hall of Fame inductee. This November, Nelson will be in Iowa as the keynote speaker at the 2013 ISSA Annual Convention and 40th Anniversary Celebration at Prairie Meadows in Altoona. Nelson, whose career in snowmobiling began shortly after the ISSA’s inception in 1973, is expected to share his insights on the evolution of the sport and the lifestyle it has created. Riding snowmobiles since he was 12 years old, Nelson began racing professionally in 1975 at the age of 22 for John Deere. He switched to Arctic Cat in 1977 and twice won the I-500 cross-country snowmobile race from Winnipeg to St. Paul. Famous as the only driver to win the I-500 on two different brands, Nelson and longtime racing partner Hubert Fixsen built, tuned and raced snowmobiles for three decades and contributed to the development and testing of several Arctic Cat projects, including the ZR line in 1993. In 1979, the snowmobile legend started Nelson Marine in Spicer and grew the business into one of the largest snowmobile dealers in Minnesota before selling it in 1997. To promote his dealership, Nelson also started Nelson Snow Tours (www.nelsonsnowtours.com) in 1980 and continues this endeavor today. In 2000, Nelson was inducted into the Snowmobile Hall of Fame in St. Germain, Wis., and in 2012, he formed the United States X-Country snowmobile racing series (www.usxracing.com) after the famed United States Cross Country circuit ceased operations. “Cross-country snowmobile racing has been my life for more than 40 years,” Nelson said. “I owe a debt of gratitude to the people and circuits that provided races during those years. Starting the USXC is my way to give back to the sport I love.”

Mesenbrink to Bring Extreme Snowmobiling to Iowa Warming up the convention crowd Saturday night will be Mark Mesenbrink of Thunderstruck Films of Helena, Mont. A high-voltage electrician by trade, Mesenbrink is known in the snowmobile video world as a high-flying, riskMark taking mountain rider, and his video presentation won’t disappoint. Mesenbrink For three years, Mesenbrink held the Thunderstruck crash title, and his exploits Guest Speaker can be seen across the Thunderstruck collection of extreme snowmobiling DVDs. Awards Banquet Whether it’s shredding a cookie in fresh powder or pulling a wheelie on his 174inch 2012 Polaris Pro Turbo, Mesenbrink is all about getting the shot for the camera. Owned by Big Sky X-treme Snowmobiling Productions, Thunderstruck Films began videotaping extreme mountain riding in the late 1990s. The company drew its name from its use of several Arctic Cat Thundercats, and its riders earned reputations for being crazy and able to do just about anything on a sled. Riding locations are typically scouted and filmed by helicopter, and Mesenbrink said his favorite area to ride is the mountains of British Columbia. His self-described specialty is “climbing and wrecking.” “Life is divided into two parts: anticipation and memory and if we remember richly, then we must have lived richly,” he said. According to Team Thunderstruck, Mesenbrink’s antics are just as colorful off-camera. “Mark’s amazing reputation follows him everywhere he goes, and if you ever want to meet him in person, just come to a snow show and visit the Thunderstruck booth!,” his bio reads from www.thunderstruckfilms.com. “From Karaoke in Puyallup to eating cheese curds at Haydays, Mark is the ultimate gentleman and funny man.” Free-rider Chapman on Women in Snowmobiling Similar to Mesenbrink, Canadian snowmobile free-rider Julie-Ann Chapman will certainly liven things up at the Saturday noon luncheon convention weekend as she spins tales of her technical riding in the mountains of British Columbia. Hailing from Pemberton, B.C., about 20 minutes north of Whistler, Chapman founded She Shreds Mountain Adventures and spends more than 100 days each winter on her 2011 Skidoo Summit 800. She blogs about her passion for snowmobiling on her website at www.julieannchapman.com and also offers riding clinics to women. Eager to share her story, Chapman is an emerging star in the male-dominated sport of extreme snowmobiling and is finding herself riding in areas that she never Turn to page 16

Keeping up with technology is a must this day and age. Whether you are trying to attract a younger generation to your club or you are simply trying to improve your club’s communication to its members, you need to be online. “The internet is the fastest, easiest and cheapest medium to communicate with everyone,” explained Jennifer Sample of Woody’s Traction. “In 2013, you must have an Internet presence.” Sample will lead two website development seminars at this year’s convention for club members to attend. She will show you free and easy resources to establish your snowmobile club on the internet and provide information about free resources to create a website, edit pictures and video. “If you have a website already, are people finding it?” Sample asked. “The second part of the workshop I’ll explain important elements to include in your website and tips on helping you get your website seen.”

Convention preview Continued from page 12 has already kicked in $1,000 to offset Chapman’s expenses, while Chrystal Motorsports is funding Mesenbrink’s trip. Two Iowa City area clubs have stepped up to financed Nelson’s appearance. As detailed in the sponsorship list on page 12, 13 sponsors so far have helped out with the fundraising. Both Klinkefus and Burger could not be happier with the response to date. “The sponsorships have been doing great…much better than I would have anticipated,” Klinkefus said, recognizing how much snowmobile clubs are asked to assist the ISSA. “I’m pleased to report that we are off to a great

start,” Burger wrote in an email to board members. “There are plenty of sponsorship opportunities remaining so check with your clubs and see what you can do to help.” Clubs, dealers and associates can help the convention in a variety of ways. In addition to sponsoring speakers, they can help with snacks and beverages for the meeting and seminar breaks or they can pick up the tab for an award plaque for the Saturday evening awards banquet. If you are interested in helping out, let Burger or Klinkefus know. Their phone numbers were listed earlier. They can be reached by email at burger.garyc@ gmail.com or slklinkefus@dmgov.org. Last winter, Chapman was named the British Columbia Snowmobile Federation’s Snowmobiler of the Year and has been featured in SnoRiders and SnowGoer magazines. Her off-season is usually spent on a surfboard.

O’Brien County Snowtrackers

by Zelda Buse Christensen In the middle of September (today is Sept. 20), there are many things to think about and concentrate on other than snowmobiling. However, snowomobilers never want to be caught unprepared when snow DOES come. This could finally be the winter we have been waiting for! What to do? People need to make sure everyone in their family has sled and gear and clothing—all in good shape. And people need to make sure that their snowmobile club— such as the O’Brien County Snowtrackers—is in good shape. Dues need to be paid, new members need to be recruited, a fall meeting needs to be held, events need to be planned, signs need to be put up, ideas need to be offered and discussed and implemented, and everyone needs to work together. The ISSA needs to be promoted—remember the convention coming up in November in Des Moines! Region 4

by Dick Melick, Reporter Greetings from Cedar Falls. We are pleased to report that long-time club member Stanley Wolf was recently selected by Arctic Cat as the ‘International Groomer of the Year.’ Presentation of the award was made during the awards banquet at the International Snowmobile Hall of Fame in Eagle River, Wis. A number of club members and his family were in attendance to support Stanley as he received this honor. Stanley was one of two members of the club who helped form the 5 Star Snow Trails Association to operate the trail system in Black Hawk and western Bremer counties in 1985. He has been on the board of the 5 Star Association since that time and has been one of the major mechanics keeping the machine running. Floyd County Groomers Association

by Mike Paulus, Reporter It’s hard to believe it is already time to get back into the regular monthly routine of club meetings. The Floyd County Groomers had a productive meeting to start the season this last month, and we’re hoping for a season with plenty of snow. After a quick review of summer events, we began discussion of the upcoming season: membership dues, trail maps, trail updates and so on. Our members have already begun contacting our local businesses for map advertisements, and we’re beginning to think about upcoming events for the season. It will be good to get back into the swing of things and as summer events begin to become fewer; hopefully, attendance at the meetings will increase. Keep reading in the coming months for more details on any upcoming events! Region 5

by Bob Martinek, Board Member Greetings from Cresco. We have just finished our annual meeting, steak fry and membership kickoff. We had a nice turnout despite the day being cool, overcast and dreary. We held board elections to fill three spots. (Four board members had actually completed their three-year terms, but it was decided we only needed to refill with three). New board members coming on are Kelly M. and Brandon P. along with A.J. being re-elected. Myself and the rest of the board would like to thank Brad M., Mike Z. and Jeremy M. for all their time and service to the club. I am sure they will still be around helping whenever needed.

More details on that to follow. Feb. 15 Charlie’s Chili Feed at the warming bin just south of Granger on the trail back to Cresco. Also, although it is not our event but because it is so close and a really good show, don’t forget about the Winneshiek Trail Twisters Snow Show on Nov. 2 at the fairgrounds in Decorah. On a side note at the steak fry we also handed out our annual most miles (male & female) awards. Congrats to Terry T. with 3,205 and Darla V. with 1,890 miles. Well, I think that’s enough for now. Thanks.

Allamakee Sno-Blazers

With summer coming to an end and the fall harvest rapidly approaching the Allamakee Sno-Blazers are beginning to assess our tral conditions. Strong June rains have damaged some of our bridges and washed out some trail crossings. We don’t foresee any major trail changes for the upcoming season as we have great landowner support in Allamakee County. The Sno-Blazers trail bosses have built many good relationships throughout the county which is extremely helpful when marking our 250 miles of trails. Our September meeting was held on the 18th, and we reviewed dates for our yearly raffle along with our landowner appreciation brunch, which will be held in March of 2014. We did set our winter meeting dates for the second Wednesday of every month and the locations and times are listed on our website, snoblazers.lrtwebservice.com. Our website is a great way to keep up with club events and trail conditions. You can also get updates via text messages by texting “snoblazers” to 74455. This service is free to join, although your standard texting rates will apply. We are hoping for a great riding season in Northeast Iowa, and we hope that many of you can get up to Allamakee County to ride our scenic trail system. These trails wind through the beautiful bluff country along the Mississippi River through such towns as New Albin, Lansing and Harpers Ferry. They connect with Yellow River State Forest, and from there, you can visit Waterville, Rossville, Waukon and Dorchester. Region 7

Highbridge Trailblazers

by Robert Reutter, Trail Boss Hay Days are over, and we are starting to get the cooler temp that we have been looking forward to. The first snowmobile meeting of the High Bridge Trailblazers is set for Oct. 11. It will be good to see some of those people that you did not see all summer. I just got back from Colorado. I was out there visiting my girlfriend. We were up in Fraser, Colo., at her condo and went out sightseeing. We were up in the higher terrain looking at a lake, and it started raining. We started down, and it started sleeting, and then, yes, we got into a snow storm. It did not last too long, but the hills were all white. When we left Fraser, we went up over Loveland Pass. It was spitting rain but no snow. We went down and stopped in a little town to have a pizza. It started raining, and it did not stop for four days. Parts of Colorado got up to 18 inches, causing roads to wash out all over the place. Towns cut off had to have helicopters fly in to get the people out.

Central Iowa Snowmobilers

by Tammy Weese, Secretary Its finally starting to feel like fall, and with fall comes our main event: our Grass Drags and Swap Meet. We have been busy working on planning and getting things ready for this event, which will fall this year on Sunday, Oct. 27, at the Central Iowa Fairgrounds in Marshalltown. So much behind-the-scenes work to get a successful event going makes us wonder how in the world the big ole Hay Days planners feel! We have a new event committee that planned some great events for us throughout the summer. We had a landowner, sponsor and member appreciation event in July, a beanbag tourney over the 4th that turned out great, as well as a Central Iowa Snowmobiler night at our local dirt track, which was a great time. I’m anxious to see what they have in store for snow season! Guys are working to get the groomer in tip top shape, and with the potential Iowa River Trail that has been in the works, things just keep getting better and better in central Iowa. Hope to see you at our Grass Drags on Oct. 27! Region 12

Snowdrifters, Inc.

by Ron Roe Hello, everyone. I do believe that fall is in the air. Some of these cool mornings makes a believer out of me. A jacket felt pretty good a couple days. I am not ready to give in totally yet. Our club has their annual swap meet and membership drive set for Sunday, Oct. 27, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m..We also have a vintage sled show along with the swap meet for anyone who wants to bring their vintage machines. We had our monthly meeting on Sept. 12, and there was a long list of bridges and trail work that needs done before the snow flies. I think the list is about the normal amount we have each year. It just seemed long when we were talking about it. Once everyone tackles their share, it will go quickly and be done in time. After Hay Days, Chris and I went to Spooner, Wis., to ride our ATVs. On the first day, we were stopped at an intersection talking and this lady drove out of her driveway and told us about a bear in a tree in her yard. Then her husband invited us over to look at it. We stood right at the base of the tree and you could see the bear squirming around in the tree out on a small branch. Later, I did spot another bear crossing the road just as I pulled up to stop. Once he crossed the road he was gone in the brush. It is neat to see them like that. The trails were excellent for riding. They will be even better this winter with some snow on them. Hopefully. I’ll have more on snow-related things next month. That’s all for now.

Join the ISSA Today!

I

f you enjoy the sport of snowmobiling in Iowa, you are not alone. In 2013, more than 25,000 sleds registered with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, and more than 50 clubs around the state maintained a 8,000-mile trail system. The glue that bonds us together is the Iowa State Snowmobile Association and its network of 2,776 dedicated family members and associates. Since 1973, our organization has helped to maintain an expansive fleet of groomers and lobbied on behalf of snowmobile-friendly legislation. Without the ISSA over the past 30 years, snowmobiles—for example—would have been held to a 15 mph speed limit, and

there would not have been any night riding, ditch riding nor access to state parks. Our efforts continue, and your support would be greatly appreciated. Fill out the form below and join the ISSA today. With your paid annual membership, you will receive a free subscription to the Iowa Snowmobiler magazine (our official publication) as well as a complimentary accidental death and dismemberment insurance policy. In order to receive the full $2,500 benefit, though, please list each family member in the space provided. Thank You!
