Stricker’s Unlikely Path To The JDC Three-Peat Contributed By: John Deere Classic
Was Steve Stricker’s three-peat ever really in doubt? Actually, yes. But in the end the unofficial “nicest guy in golf” and the world’s fifth-ranked player - sank an unlikely 25-foot putt from the collar of the 18th green Sunday at TPC Deere Run to win his third consecutive John Deere Classic by one stroke over 23-year-old PGA TOUR rookie Kyle Stanley. When the putt rolled in, the deafening roar of the crowd and Stricker’s uncharacteristically Tiger-esque reaction indicated just how much his much-discussed quest for a three-peat meant both to him and to his many fans in the Quad Cities. His 22-under par 258 defeated Stanley’s 21-under by the narrowest of margins. After making two straight bogeys, the Wisconsin native and former Illini golfer birdied the 17th hole with a 15-foot putt to get to within one of the surging Stanley. Still, all seemed lost when Stricker’s tee shot on No. 18 landed in a bunker on the left side of the fairway, leaving him with an impossibly awkward stance, but setting up one of the more memorable shots in tournament history. With the ball in the sand below his feet and 184 yards to the green, Stricker debated with his caddie, Jimmy Johnson, whether to use a 7-iron the conservative play to the middle of the putting surface or a 6-iron - to push the ball hole high. Stricker paced. And he watched as Stanley missed his 10-foot par putt on 18, meaning birdie could win it. “Let’s go for the birdie,” Stricker said to Johnson.

Stricker finished 26 under at last year’s tournament and was 20 under in his 2009 victory. So, was he ready talk about four in a row? “No,” Stricker said with a smile. Stanley, 23, claimed a nice consolation prize, earning the spot in the British Open that goes to the highest finisher in this tournament who’s not already qualified. But if it hadn’t been for Stricker’s late heroics, Stanley would have had his first victory on the TOUR. “I’m very excited to go over there,” said Stanley, whose best finish had been a tie for 12th at the Arnold Palmer Invitational in late March. “But I’m still trying to calm down from that round.” Stanley trailed by five strokes after Stricker buried a 50-foot birdie putt on No. 9. Glen Oaks Set To Host 109th Iowa Amateur Contributed By: IowaAmateur.org
After many years of watching the legends of golf take on Glen Oaks CC in the annual Principal Charity Classic, Iowa’s top amateurs now get their chance. The 109th Iowa Amateur Championship will be played July 25-27 at the West Des Moines home of the Champions Tour event. A field of 144 of Iowa’s best amateurs representing 63 different towns and cities from all sections of the state will take on the 6,900 yard, par-71 Tom Fazio designed course to compete for Iowa’s oldest and most prestigious amateur golf title. Nine former champions highlight the field that ranges in age from 15 to 67. In addition, 14 of the current top 20 in the 2011 Player of the Year race are in the field. The 2010 champion, Mike McCoy, will not play in defense of his title. Ankeny’s Jon Olson comes into the amateur with the 2011 Iowa Mid-Amateur and Iowa Match Play titles already in hand and will try to become the first player in history to hold all three state championships at one time. Olson, 31, had a short career as a professional before becoming a reinstated amateur in 2010. Gene Elliott, the champion in 2000, is hungry to win another amateur and should be a strong contender on his home course. The 49-yearold has battled injuries and other health related challenges since his win 11 years ago and would
dearly love to add another amateur to his impressive accomplishments. Another perennial contender is 2006 champion Jon Brown of Urbandale who recently won his seventh consecutive Des Moines City Championship and his ninth overall. Brown won the Iowa Match Play in 2003 and 2006 and was player of the year in 2004 and 2006. One of the most exciting things to watch each year is the emerging group of youngsters coming on to the scene. Zach Steffen, Steven Ihm and Matt Solis, members of the 2011 Indian Hills Community College national junior college championship team are in the field. Fifteen-year-old Jeff Swegle is a Glen Oaks member and just returned from Bremerton, Wash. and a fine performance in the U. S. Junior Amateur where he qualified for the 64 player match play field before falling in the first round. Conner Power of Ames and Jack Gradoville of

Des Moines join Swegle as the youngest players in the field. Other young players to watch are 2010 runner-up and U. S. Amateur quarterfinalist Jed Dirksen of Hampton, 2008 runner-up Michael Wuertz of Davenport and Carroll’s Kirby Pettitt who won the recent Lake Creek Amateur. Among the Mid-Amateurs, look for former champions Nate Dunn (2004) of Hiawatha, Brian Verduyn (2005) of Clive and Mike Oimeon (2008) of Clear Lake to be among the many expected to contend for the title.

Course Review: Urbandale Golf - Hole by Hole Breakdown Urbandale Golf and Country Club
COURSE DESCRIPTION: Urbandale Golf and Country Club is a challenging and fun golf course to play on a daily basis. The wide fairways beautifully lined with large trees and small greens present a challenge for the expert to the beginner. A meandering creek flows through four holes with a beautiful pond framing the finishing hole, which will provide plenty of water as an obstacle. If you like fast greens you will love the speed of these greens. They are traditionally fast with many interesting pin positions. This 45 year old golf course has a relaxing atmosphere within the confines of the city of Urbandale. Occasionally wildlife can be seen on the course, which adds to the relaxing atmosphere of the 78 acres. So whether you are a beginner or an expert, you will enjoy the challenge of our well maintained golf course.
Hole Number One | Par 4 Nice starting hole. A dogleg to the left with an elevated green. Trouble left of the trees. Right center fairway is desirable. Hit enough club for your second shot.
Hole Number Two | Par 5 Excellent par 5. Drive needs to be on the left side of fairway. Trees right and left. Lay up area short of creek is at the bottom of hill. Big hitters can try to go over creek in two. Most players will have a downhill second shot. Third shot to elevated green which is one of the deepest on the course.
Hole Number Three | Par 4 Straight away par 4 with Out of Bounds to the right. Trees to left. Left center is the desirable spot to play from. Narrow green with bunkers left and along the green. Better to be short than long over this green.
Hole Number Four | Par 3 Well guarded par 3 with bunkers short, right and left. Better to use one more club than normal as green is elevated and deep.

Hole Number Five | Par 4
Hole Number Eight | Par 5
Hole Number Nine | Par 3
Straight away par 4 with elevated tee and elevated green. Wide fairway with a second shot on an upslope to the green. Use more club for your second shot as the green is severely elevated. A high second shot will help on this hole to stop on this crowned green.
Short but interesting Par 5. Fairway slopes to left giving players a difficult lie for the second shot. Ideal spot is off tee to right side of the fairway. Long hitters will try to get to the green in 2 but a nice landing flat area about 100 to 140 yards out from the green will be desired for most. Severe green, try to stay below the hole.
Interesting and fun hole to finish. 2 greens are used, one for the front 9 and one for the back 9. You must carry water on both holes to difficult greens to putt. Always use enough club and a high shot is desired. Try to stay below the hole as above usually ends up as a 3 putt.
Hole Number Six | Par 4 Short but dangerous. Dogleg left with Out of Bounds to the left and trees right. A fairway wood off the tee is the desirable shot as a short shot into this crowned green is needed. Bunkers left and right provide a small opening to this crowned green. Green has many undulations which make putting a challenge.
Hole Number Seven | Par 4 Best par 4 on the golf course. Elevated tee to a flat landing area at the bottom of hill. Trees left and right. Tee shot needs to be center or left center in fairway. Green is severely elevated over a creek. A high shot is required so take more club. Anything short will come back down the hill front of the green. Wide but narrow green.
Urbandale Golf and Country Club is continually improving and upgrading the golf course. We have recently completed several projects, one of the biggest is the new cart path on the south side of the #8 Fairway. We now have continuous cart paths throughout the course. We have a long range planning committee to ensure the progress with golf course projects and to come up with suggestions that improve playability and enhance the overall golf course. We strive to make the course, greens, and grounds the best they can be.
