The fifth Principal Charity Classic returns to the Glen Oaks Country Club June 1st through the 5th in West Des Moines, Iowa and marks the 11th year that the Champions Tour has been in central Iowa. Tom Lehman graces our second annual digital front cover for the Principal Charity Classic edition of “On the Tee” as he makes his debut in Iowa the state that he was born in and his mother’s birthplace as well. Tom Lehman is one of the really great guys on the tour and he bypassed The Memorial to play in the event that has been recognized as one of the player’s favorite venues on the Champions Tour. Tom Lehman is a former winner of the Waterloo Open and has three Champions Tour victories this year. The 2011 tournament is quickly shaping up to be an incredible field with 25 of the tours top 30 money winners already committed to this week long bash combined with great activities all week long. Jamie Alt and his staff have taken the momentum of this annual golf fest and again assembled household names that have walked the fairways of Glen Oaks for years. Jay Haas, Fuzzy Zoeller, Ben Crenshaw, Tom Kite, “The Walrus “ Craig Stadler, Nick Price, and Fred Funk are just a few of the favorites along with our cover boy, Bernhard Langer, Corey Pavin, and Paul Azinger. They will all be welcomed by deep galleries expressing appreciation for these 50 plus icons of the game that have discovered the elusive fountain of youth while tearing it up on the Champions Tour. The 2010 Principal Charity Classic was a classic again with a worldwide hall of famer Nick Price hoisting the trophy and what an ambassador to worldwide golf as was Seve Ballesteros who we just lost this month and a great friend to many on the Champions Tour. I absolutely love the Champions Tour and my half century plus on the planet may have something to do with my man love for these guys, but holy Toledo can these guys play golf! If you have never attended the Principal Charity Classic it is a must do for any Iowa golf fan regardless of your age. We Iowan’s are very spoiled when it comes to golf from a course perspective and price to play. Combine the availability of courses and pricing with this Champions Tour event in June and the John Deere Classic in the Quad Cities this July all within easy driving distance and Iowa may be one of America’s best kept secrets in the golf world.

Mike Rickord ISC Publisher The collegiate golf from NCAA D-I University of Iowa to NAIA Grandview University and D-III Central College has improved dramatically on the men’s and women’s side as every school in the state has raised the bar. This success is also evident in the high school programs across Iowa in every class and again on the boys and girls side of the sport. The IPGA and IGA have grass roots programs across the state that feed these high schools and our improvement across Iowa can be traced to these programs at all of the great club houses across Iowa and the teaching pros that run these youth programs. This is our 3rd largest edition of the year and a testament to the love that Iowans have for the great game of golf. I encourage you to initiate your children to the game at an early age and if you have not gotten the bug make certain to make 2011 the year that you tee it up as all of our golf course partners need your support with the spring and 2010 that they endured! Tyler Gunderson Claims Hard-Fought 1A Class Individual Title Newman Catholic (Mason City) used a strong opening round to grab the Class 1A Iowa high school boys team golf championship, 12-strokes better than runner-up Hinton. Leading the way for Newman Catholic was Dalton Olson with a fourth place finish in the individual race. Also on the 1A title team was Mitch Jacobi, Cody Roberts, Tyler Fischer, Derrick Urdahl and Tanner Gribben. The medalist honors went to Tyler Gunderson of Lisbon who led after the opening round 72 and finished with a 77 for a 2-stroke victory over Joe Weber of NUH-Cedar Falls. Erik Sikkema of Prince of Peace (Clinton) finished third after a Class 1A best second round 72. Kuemper Catholic Defends Their 2A Team Title, Adam Squires Grabs Individual Title Adam Squires of Columbus Catholic (Waterloo) posted top scores in both the first and second rounds to claim the Class 2A medalist honors. Squires was five strokes better than runner-up Nate Schill from Prairie Valley (Gowrie) who also shot a 75 in the final round. Kuemper Catholic (Carroll) defended their 2010 title with a 2-stroke victory over Columbus Catholic who held a 2-stroke lead heading into championship Saturday. The Knights were led by Nathan Molak who tied for third individually. Also making up the title team were Tanner Ludwig who was tied for fifth, Kyler Ludwigm Jacob Buelt, Brian Schreck and Matt Gute. Iowa High School Girls State Golf Championship Results - Final Contributed By: IGHSAU, Iowa Sports Connection Bishop Garrigan (Algona) Cruises While Victoria Grass of Ankeny Christian Takes Second Individual Crown in Class 1A Listed below are the two day results from the Iowa High School Girls State Golf Tournament. The Class 4A and 3A championships are being played at River Valley Golf Course in Adel and the Class 2A and 1A at Otter Creek Golf Course in Ankeny. Bishop Garrigan (Algona) proved their team strength as they cruised to the Class 1A team title by 62-strokes. Bishop Garrigan had four top-ten individual finishers led by Sheridan Berte who posted a second round best score of 70 to finish runner-up to two-time medalist winner Victoria Grasso of Ankeny Christian Academy. Grasso won the title in 2009 as a freshman as well. Also on the state championship team were Alexa Capesius who finished, Kelsie Berke who was seventh and Haley Froehlich who was ninth overall. Also on the team were Rebecca Richter and Miranda Gisch.

Pleasantville Uses Balance to Grab Class 2A Team Title; Chantel Eicher of East Marshall Wins Tight Battle for Individual Title Listed below are the two day results from the Iowa High School Girls State Golf Tournament. The Class 4A and 3A championships are being played at River Valley Golf Course in Adel and the Class 2A and 1A at Otter Creek Golf Course in Ankeny. Pleasantville led by three strokes after the first round and posted the best team score in day two to win the Class 2A team championship by eight strokes over Wapello. Pleasantville used a balanced effort with no player in the top-ten individually. Konner Gordon led the way with her 16h place individual finish along with Kaitlyn Friday who was 19th. Also on the state winning team were Morgan Marsh, Charlee Vanderpool, Ashley Jahner and Taylor Wadle. Medalist honors in Class 2A went to Chantel Eicher of East Marshall (LeGrand) who shot round of 83 and 77 for a two-day total of 160 and edged runner-up Ellie Ament of Beckman (Dyersville) by one stroke. Kelsey Faiferlick of St. Edmond (Fort Dodge) finished third after posting the days best round of 76. Charles City Holds Off Late Charge from Clear Lake for Class 3A Team Championship; Jesse Sindlinger Grabs Individual Title Listed below are the two day results from the Iowa High School Girls State Golf Tournament. The Class 4A and 3A championships are being played at River Valley Golf Course in Adel and the Class 2A and 1A at Otter Creek Golf Course in Ankeny. Charles City led by medalist Jesse Singlinger won the the team title from a late charging Clear Lake in Class 3A. The Lions trailed by 18-strokes after the first round but closed to finish six strokes back. Sindlinger followed her torrid first round score of 68 with a second day best 75 to beat Susan Kirschenman of Ballerd (Huxley) by 5-strokes for the individual title. Also on the Class 3A title team were Megan Joerger who finsihed fifth overall, Karli Schlader, Kylie Bluhm, Moriah Sherman and Paige Keifer. Beth Wagner Rolls to Medalist Honors; Cedar Falls Coasts to Team Title in Class 4A Listed below are the two day results from the Iowa High School Girls State Golf Tournament. The Class 4A and 3A championships are being played at River Valley Golf Course in Adel and the Class 2A and 1A at Otter Creek Golf Course in Ankeny. In Class 4A it was Cedar Falls who used their first day lead of 14-strokes to roll to the team title by 12-strokes over Pleasant Valley. Leading the way for the Tigers was Allison Rolinger, who tied for fourth in the individual standings with rounds of 81-84. Taylor Roberts, Sonja Przbylski, Megan Brewer and Abby Rolinger were all part of the championship team. Beth Wagner of Ankeny followed up her leading first round 75 with a 71 to claim the medalist honors by nine strokes over runner-up Kenzie Rottinghaus of Urbandale. Wagner improved on her third place individual finish in 2010.

Waterloo, Iowa Boasts Three Top Municipal Courses Contributed By: Glen Turk IowaGolf.com Waterloo, IA may be the fourth largest city in the Hawkeye state with a population of just under 70,000, but it wants to be first in golf. To begin with, for the past 77 years the city has hosted the Waterloo Open, Iowa’s largest annual professional golf tournament. Secondly, the city first settled in 1845 is home to three distinctive municipal golf courses that have been able to keep their prices at near 19th century rates. Sure rounds will never be 20 cents like they were way back when, but $20 for 18 holes with a cart seems like a blast from the past to me.

“The biggest thing I think that sets Waterloo Golf apart from any other community in the Midwest is the commitment from the City and Golf Professionals to provide a wide variety of first-rate high quality golfing experiences at very reasonable rates,” explained JB Bolger, Golf Manager of Waterloo Leisure Services. We are able to do this by maintaining efficient maintenance operations at all times. Being part of a larger city structure also has it’s advantages: if we need the skills of a plumber, electrician or other skilled labor we already have professionals on the payroll that can handle these items ‘in house’ without having to utilize outside labor,” stated Bolger.
We begin our look into the Waterloo golf scene with where it all started - the 1908 establishment known as Irv Warren Memorial Golf Course at Brynes Park. Strategically placed trees and small rolling greens highlight the 6194 yard course that is comprised of five par-3’s, eight par-4’s, and five par-5’s. Twelfth year head golf professional Andy Devine has been around long enough to know why the Waterloo golfing public gravitated to this elder statesman. “Due to the uniqueness of the course’s strategic layout, length, and amount of par-3’s and par-5’s it allows for the possibility of a completely different experience every time. Golfers also love coming back because they sometimes can even shoot a lower score because of shorter yardage. Irv Warren is also about customer loyalty. We understand that there are other golfing options around and strive to create an enjoyable experience for every individual every time,” said Devine.
Monte Meyer, Waterloo’s longest tenured golf professional, summarizes Waterloo’s passion for golf this way. “Having been at South Hills for 20+ years I can tell you that Waterloo golfers love their golf and really love their courses. The golfers also are proud of how well maintained the three public courses are and the fact that golf is so affordable in this area. I think for the most part players have a favorite course of the three that they call their home course - but they try to play all three before the season ends,” concluded Meyer, Head
It doesn’t take long for Irv Warren Memorial GC to tap into the risk vs. reward part of your brain. The first hole is the first of many that will ask you the question “to go or not to go?” Andy Devine picks up the opening hole description from there. “One of my favorite holes on the golf course is the first. The 339 yard par-4 definitely offers two ways to play it. Option one is to hit a driver as far as you can down the middle, but the farther you hit it, the more trees come into play that forms a bottleneck approach to the green. The

second way to play is with a long iron or fairway wood to position you for a 100 yard second shot into a green protected by a bunker. In each scenario, one must avoid the trees on the right because the only recovery is a chip shot back to the fairway,” stated Devine. Seven holes later at the corner of Martin Street and W. 4th resides Devine’s second favorite hole, the 205 yard par-3 8th. “What I love about this par-3 is it demands length as well as accuracy,” explained Devine. “The challenge of the hole is that is lies uphill and has a very large green, so just hitting the green doesn’t ensure par. Also it is important to be able to hit your shot in the correct position because the shape of the green allows for no straight putts,” said Devine.

The opening hole is a medium length par five playing up hill all the way to the green. The ideal tee shot would be aimed at the right fairway bunker and drawn slightly to find the fairway. Anything left of the small cross bunker will be trouble. The green is fairly open with one bunker left and a series of grass hollows on the right.
This first of the four pars plays up hill to an elevated green. Again, watch the wind as this hole is wide open and, in order to reach the green for par, a good drive to the fairway is critical. The approach shot reveals a large slightly undulating green with Lake Rathbun in the distance. A green side bunker short and right and grass hollows left protect the green.

The second hole is another five par but this time playing downhill through a natural valley. Bunkering right and left require a well-struck tee shot to find the fairway. The green is heavily guarded by deep bunkers on the left and, like all “Biarritz” greens, is divided by a pronounced swale running from right to left. A carefully played approach to the correct quadrant of the green should yield an easy par.

This par five is the shortest on the course but, with a very intimidating downhill tee shot, is still no pushover. The fairway is wide and plays up through a valley to an elevated two-tier green. Even through there are no sand bunkers, the grass hollows and awkward lies will require concentration and persistence to get your par.

Number eight is a medium length par four which doglegs sharply to the left. The best line for most will be the small target bunker directly through the fairway. Big hitters may benefit from a downhill bounce if they find the fairway. Read your putt carefully as the slope of the green can play tricks here. Again, missing the green long will be costly. The last hole on the front nine is a medium length three par with a view of Lake Rathbun in the distance. Bunkers tightly guard the green to the right and left. Missing long or right will likely mean bogey or worse.
The sixth hole plays straight away over fairly level ground and offers a good chance for par or better. The green is guarded by a series of bunkers on the left and slopes sharply from back to front right.

This beautiful downhill par three is the longest on the course. Consider the win and elevation change as careful club selection and well-struck shots are required to carry the creek and avoid the green side bunkers on the right. The putting surface is the largest on the course and slopes generally from back right to front left.

This par three, the second on the front nine, plays slightly downhill to another one of the larger greens on the course. The large bunker on the left is deep and, for some, can save them from a far worse fate. Choose your club carefully and don’t

The tenth is a medium length four par playing slightly uphill. It doglegs gently to the right, but the fairway is wide. Long hitters can again benefit from a downhill slope by reaching the top of the hill. The green slopes from back to front and is guarded by a single large bunker to the left. This hole should give up some birdies.
The fourteenth is the first par five on the back nine and plays slightly downhill off the tee. There is water left so the line of play for most will be to just carry the corner of the slope at the right side of the fairway. The second shot will be uphill and into the prevailing winds. There is water again on the left side of the green so favor the right side on the approach.

Number eleven is the shortest of the four pars and is a classic risk/reward hole. Most will choose to lay-up to a fairly generous fairway short of the bunkers. Long hitters who are able to negotiate the bunkers will have only a short chip or putt for birdie or eagle. Pick your poison and swing away.
A good medium length par four which should allow you to hit all you have off the tee. The approach is downhill to a green which is protected on the right by two deep bunkers. The green is domed and slopes away from the shot in the back.
Hole Number Twelve | Par 4 365 - 345 - 335 - 320 - 305
The twelfth hole is a sharp dogleg left playing downhill. The ideal shot is towards the right fairway bunker with a draw. Long hitters will have an awkward downhill approach to a green which falls off severely on the left. Take note of the great views to Lake Rathbun and much of the remaining back nine.

The sixteenth is a long par five playing uphill with two distinctly separate lines of play. The upper fairway plays somewhat longer and leaves a blind approach to the putting surface. The green is only 20 paces from front to back and thus requires a high approach or enough spin to avoid the grass hollows at the back of the green.

The Iowa PGA Parent Junior Championship at Jester Park Golf Course was held on Saturday, May 14, 2011. Thirty-eight teams of two participated in the 18-hole division and 20 teams of 2 participated in the 9-hole division. Both division played alternate shot. The 9-hole division played Jester Park’s Par 3 golf course and the 18-hole division played Jester Park’s regulation course. Special thanks to title sponsor Wilson Golf and sales representative Kevin Dorrington for his support in providing a tee gift to each competitor and also a prize for each division team champion. The Iowa PGA would also like to thank head PGA Professional Zach Vervaecke and the entire staff at Jester Park for their support in hosting. Thank you to all teams for participating.
