This is the 5th edition of our “On the Tee” digital magazine and it has been an incredible year for the statewide expansion of “On the Tee” and our multi-media coverage of golf including the PGA, LPGA, IPGA, IGA, college, high school, and “Hack Nation” amateur golf events for the 2011 season. In addition to the digital magazine we expanded our radio reach year with the radio show on our flagship ESPN 1700 The Champ and across the Iowa Sports Connection Radio Network reaching all of the clubhouses “From the Missouri to the Mississippi”. “On the Tee’s” TV production reaches the majority of Iowa with WHO TV 13.2 Mediacom channels 113 and 246 in central Iowa and now airs KCRG 9.2 and Mediacom 109 in the Northeastern portion of Iowa. The ‘On the Tee” radio and TV productions also stream on “iowasportsconnection.com”, “Ustream.TV”, “KCRG.com”, and “whotv.com. Our sophisticated fans can follow our progress on Facebook as we have the 21st century media covered, and I’m proud to report that the “HackNation” did grasp the new technology and I’m sorry to say that as I am the leader of this technologically dysfunctional group of hacks I haven’t quite mastered it myself but will this fall! This multi-media stable of television, digital magazine, e-mail newsletters and state wide radio continues to make “On the Tee” the states leader in covering golf year round. In 2011 we covered all of the golf inside Iowa and worldwide with our partners at the IGA, IPGA, The Golf Channel, The Des Moines Register, The Cedar Rapids Gazette, Quad City Times along with our web partner “iowagolf.com”. The 2011 PGA season had a “Who Won?” theme to it with the list of winners and young guns dominating the leader boards. Charl Schwartzel The Masters champ leads the list of “where did he come from?” along with Johnny Vegas, Gary Woodland, Michael Bradley, Keegan Bradley The PGA champ, Webb Simpson, and Brendan Steele. Now you would have to be a Golf Channel junkie to know of any of those players as we are in the studio of “On the Tee”. Judd Gibb, Jay Horton, and I log more hours watching Golf Channel than most individuals sleep. Speaking of the Golf Channel we were again blessed to have a superb relationship with the worldwide leader in golf coverage and the “Stat Man” Alex Micelli who donned the Drake Bulldog colors for a couple of semesters and

now is always nattily attired in his bow tie join us several time a month on the air as does “The Hawk” John Hawkins and Erik Kuselias from the “Morning Drive” also was kind enough along with Kelly Tilghman. We will continue to bring national guests to the airwaves as well as the state’s best golfers at all levels during the fall and winter as Iowa’s only year round golf production. The 5th annual Hack Nation Invitational July 20th at Willow Creek in Des Moines was an incredible success and our most successful to date as we celebrated 5 years of hilarity, camaraderie, imbibing, eating, cigar smoking and Oh Yeah! Golfing was included and the sponsors provided fabulous flight prizes! The sponsors are all on board again this year with Golf Headquarters leading the way and supported by Madhouse Beer, Jasper Winery, Pearl Vodka, Central City Liquors, Okoboji Bar and Grille, Cleveland Golf, Callaway Golf, New Golf Cars of Iowa, Footjoy, Stoney Creek Inn, and over a dozen supporting sponsors. The staff at Willow Creek led by owner Dan Clark provided impeccable professional service all day I assure you the 6th annual will be bigger, better, and certainly wilder! In closing, I thank you for opening up this 5th edition of 2011 of the “On the Tee” magazine and remind you to get out to the course this fall and support our partner courses that were hammered again in 2011 by course crushing weather. We need our Iowa golf courses and partners in business to have a fantastic 2011 and carry us into 2012! Have a great month! Keep it in the short grass, hit em straight! And God Bless America!

The 2011 Iowa PGA Pro-Lady was held at Mason City Country Club on Monday, August 15th, 2011. Fifteen teams competed in this event where each professional teamed up with three ladies in this fun event. The format consisted of 18-Hole Individual Low Pro and a modified team scramble event where the pro played his own ball and the ladies played a three-person scramble. The team score consisted of either the professional’s score for the hole or the team’s score for the hole, whichever was lower. The Iowa PGA would like to thank Head PGA Professional, Matt Messenger, and his entire staff for hosting this event.

The Iowa PGA Parent Junior Championship was held Sunday, August 14 at Pheasant Ridge GC and Walter’s Ridge Golf Course (Par 3) with 124 participants. Competitors competed in an alternate shot format on both courses. This event was sponsored by Kevin Dorrington and Wilson Golf. Each competitor received a sleeve of golf balls as a tee gift and the division winners received some nice luggage pieces from Wilson (shoe bag and backback). The Iowa PGA would like to thank Kevin and Wilson Golf for their support. Also special thanks to John Bermel, Head PGA Professional, Adam Luehmann, Assistant Professional and the entire Pheasant Ridge crew for their support in hosting.

Course Review: Arsenal Island Golf Course - Hole by Hole Breakdown Arsenal Island Golf Course Hole Number One | Par 4

River

The debut is bordered beautifully by Colonels’ Row and the Mississippi River. A large tree green side will block any approach attempted from the right side of the fairway. Hole Number Two | Par 5

Dyke

Out of bounds on both sides makes accuracy off the tee critical. A daring drive over the mounds that cross the fairway sets up an opportunity to reach this par five in two. Hole Number Three | Par 4

Mound

The third hole at the Arsenal gets its name from its raised green. The wise will place their tee shot short of the fairway bunker leaving a challenging uphill approach. Hole Number Four | Par 3

Papoose

Named after a small island near the green that was removed in the 1930’s, this par three features a large, flat green that is well guarded by two bunkers. Hole Number Five | Par 5

Garden

Another beautiful view of the Mississippi River. A left-toright tee shot to a narrow fairway sets up a right-toleft second shot or a lay up to the right of the fairway bunker. This green slopes severely from back-right to front-left.

Hole Number Six | Par 4

Pasture

Trees form a shoot to drive through onto a fairly generous sized fairway. A narrow, sloping green is guarded by a bunker and large trees. This par four begins one of the toughest seven hole stretches in the area. Hole Number Seven | Par 4

Butte

that slopes off on all sides. Three bunkers surrounding the green increase the demand for accuracy.

This long par four demands an accurate approach. Bunkers guard both sides of a green that is more challenging than it looks.

Hole Number Ten | Par 5

Long View

Hole Number Eight | Par 4

Old Mill

The fairway bunkers at the corner of this long, narrow dogleg right are only twenty yards apart and the green is protected by bunkers and trees. It is named for the old flour mill that once stood five stories tall on the eastern end of Arsenal Island. Hole Number Nine | Par 3

Punch Bowl

The tee shot here at the ninth must carry the pond that gives this hole its name and find rest on a green

A long, straight par five requires two accurate shots to set up the approach. Two bunkers guard the front of the green. Hole Number Eleven | Par 4

Prairie

A large right-to-left tee shot can leave a short approach to a well guarded green. A tee shot to the corner of this dogleg left leaves a much longer, more difficult approach.

Hole Number Twelve | Par 4

Woods

Woods provide a scenic backdrop for a tee shot to a generous fairway. Avoid the right green side bunker as the green slopes away from a shot from that direction.

and almost reached the Mississippi River on the south side of the island, today, a solid, accurate drive to the to of the hill leaves a short approach to an elevated green surrounded by bunkers. Hole Number Fifteen | Par 4

Barracks

Hole Number Thirteen | Par 3

Lone Tree

A shot from the elevated tee here at the thirteenth provides much needed relief after the preceding seven hole stretch. The green is large but its severe slope from back-to-front will challenge the short game.

The final four holes play near many large buildings on the historic Arsenal Island. Trouble lies everywhere on this winding par five but it can be reached in two with a big drive and some nifty shot making. Hole Number Sixteen | Par 3

Hill

Hole Number Fourteen | Par 4

Pool

Originally a long par four that crossed Rodman Avenue

Hole Number Seventeen | Par 3

Dell

A very shallow green from front to back and swirling winds make club selection and distance control imperative. The old water tower bridge on the left adds to the view. Hole Number Eighteen | Par 4

Home

The finishing hole requires an accurate drive to the corner of the dogleg leaving a short approach. The green has bunkers on both sides and a ridge through its center separates the front from the back.

This long, uphill par three has a small, flat green with no bunkers but 225 yards uphill is tough enough.

Handicap: 5

Handicap: 17

A broad fairway favors a drive of moderate length, while deep links bunkers and the lake on the right will challenge the long hitters. The collection area left of the green will test your short game creativity.

A drive in the fairway will enjoy extra length from the downhill roll. Another classic links bunker guards the elevated green.

A well-struck short iron will make this a good birdie hole. Avoid trouble long. Hole Number Nine | Par 4

Hole Number Five | Par 3

390 - 371 - 341 - 316

186 - 185 - 161 - 131

Handicap: 7

With water guarding both sides off the tee, this sweeping dogleg left gives you the choice of the wide fairway to the right, or cutting the dogleg to the alternate fairway left. Take a moment on this elevated green to savor the beauty of your breathtaking surroundings.

This hole’s beauty is matched only by its impending peril. Errant tee shots will provide a stern test to save par.

Hole Number Two | Par 4 460 - 425 - 397 - 317 Handicap: 1

Hole Number Six | Par 4

This challenging Par 4 calls for a long, straight drive to the naturally undulating fairway. The green sloping slightly back to front will hold well-struck approaches, but avoid trouble right and long.

449 - 418 - 399 - 338 Handicap: 3

Two solid shots will result in a great birdie opportunity, but those playing from either of the daunting fairway bunkers will be fortunate to make bogey.

Hole Number Three | Par 5 534 - 510 - 472 - 442 - 402 Handicap: 13

Hole Number Seven | Par 5

Stay focused while surrounded by the beauty of the Scottish moors, tall grasses and wetlands, This hole favors the accurate hitter - long hitters will be rewarded however, if you can clear the “spectacle” bunkers in two.

528 - 505 - 482 - 432 Handicap: 15

The plentiful fairway allows you to rip one off the tee. A prevailing wind may give long hitters the nerve to challenge bunkers right and O.B. left to go for the green in two.

Hole Number Ten | Par 4 424 - 396 - 363 - 306 Handicap: 6

Golfers of all abilities will enjoy another hole with a wide variety of tee lengths to choose from. Avoid the “hidden” left fairway bunker, and you’ll have a short approach to the closely guarded green. Hole Number Eleven | Par 3 136 - 147 - 131 - 108 Handicap: 14

Fly the ball or run it up to this captivating Par 3, but don’t lose it long or left. The spacious green may test your lag putting skills. Hole Number Twelve | Par 4 350 - 328 - 294 - 275 - 258 Handicap: 18

A comfortable hole to play, and excellent birdie opportunity, especially if you’ve visited the adjacent private lesson area. Another pair of “spectacles” guards a right-hand pin. Hole Number Thirteen | Par 4 429 - 413 - 396 - 372 - 309 Handicap: 8

A relatively short but demanding hole where par is a great score. An approach to this difficult green from either fairway bunker will surely test your mettle. Hole Number Fourteen | Par 5 505 - 476 - 445 - 372 Handicap: 16

A stout test demanding length and accuracy. A birdie will be well earned.

Handicap: 10

Native grass covered mounds, wetlands and tall trees frame this picturesque hole. Approaches in the front bunker or back slope will make for a perilous up and down.

Bunkers guard the left fairway, and an approach left short may find a wetlands hazard. A generous collection area surrounds three sides of this gentle green. Hole Number Eighteen | Par 4

You’ll be eager for another round after conquering this formidable final hole. Need a par to win? The challenge awaits.

Golf Quote of the Week Contributed By: IowaGolf.com

Contributed By: Tracy Dirks, Marketing Director, Principal Charity Classic

I'm about five inches from being an outstanding golfer. That's the distance my left ear is from my right.” Zach Johnson’s Foundation a star studded event held at Elmcrest Country Club on Monday August 1st raised nearly a million dollars for “Kids on Course.” An amazing variety of local and national sports figures from all around attended the 1st annual event, among about 3,000 spectators. All in all it was a very successful day for not only Zach’s “Kids on Course” but for the entire Cedar Rapids Community. This foundation will give Cedar Rapids elementary school children various experiences to bring them closer to their academic potential off the tee.
