ABOUT THE ISF IOWA GAMES offers statewide sports competition for Iowa’s athletes. The Iowa Games was first introduced to the state in 1987 when the Summer Iowa Games was held in Ames. Today, more than 14,000 athletes participate in 58 sports at the Olympic-style sports festival during July. In 1992 the Games expanded to include the Winter Iowa Games in Dubuque and Cedar Rapids. In late January and early February more than 4,100 Iowans compete in 20 sports. The Iowa Games offers additional sports events over the course of the year. The 2012 line-up of sporting events included: • Iowa Games Net Fest Basketball & Volleyball • Fish Iowa Games • Iowa Games Hoopin’ At The Dome • Iowa Games Mud Run • Iowa Games Golf Classic • Capital City Challenge LIVE HEALTHY IOWA was created in 2001 as a strategic health initiative to address the state’s growing obesity problem. What began as a team-based weight loss challenge in central Iowa has evolved into year-round wellness challenges and events for Iowa youth and adults. Bringing together friends, families, businesses and communities, Live Healthy Iowa has maintained participation in each of Iowa’s 99 counties since 2004. In 2012, over 208,000 Iowans took part in a Live Healthy Iowa challenge or event. The focus is improving the quality of life for all physically disabled Iowans through consistent recreation and sport opportunities. ASI strives to be a resource for Iowa on the Paralympic movement. ASI wants people to enjoy the activities they’re passionate about, by providing a sense of independence rather than isolation. Summer Iowa Games

The 2012 Summer Iowa Games was held over three weekends in July. The 2012 Summer Games had 14,172 athletes participating with all 99 Iowa counties represented. The main weekend featured a change in the Opening Ceremony with country singing artists Sunny Sweeney and The Lost Trailers performing along with a free meal and carnival atmosphere. Rugby, whitewater slalom and cycling gravel grinder were added to bring the total number of sports to 58.

Iowa Games Mission

To provide sports and recreation opportunities for all Iowans through Olympic-style festivals, events and programs. Winter Iowa Games

The 20th annual Winter Iowa Games saw 4,202 athletes from 83 of Iowa’s 99 counties. The majority of events were held in Dubuque and Cedar Rapids. Eight other Iowa communities played host to Winter Iowa Games competitions including Ackley, DeWitt, Des Moines, Eldora, Harlan, Johnston and Montrose.

Iowa Games Net Fest Basketball & Volleyball

Iowa Games Net Fest had a combined 1,511 athletes compete in the basketball and volleyball tournaments. The basketball event was held the Saturday before Thanksgiving while the volleyball tournament was the first Saturday of the New Year. The tournament was held on the Iowa State University Campus and in Ames area gyms.

Fish Iowa Games

In partnership with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR), the ISF developed Fish Iowa Games as a fun and educational program for kindergarten through high school students. During the program students learn three different casting techniques: flip, pitch and overhand cast. Students then use these techniques in a competition of accuracy. Eighty-seven schools were provided rods, reels, targets, instructional DVDs, medals for winners and other materials from the DNR. A total of 12,631 kids participated in the 2012 Fish Iowa Games. Medalists from the school events were invited to compete in the Summer Iowa Games, Fish Iowa Games Finals.

Iowa Games Hoopin’ At The Dome

Hoopin’ At The Dome is a half-court, 3 on 3 basketball tournament. Partnering with the Des Moines Parks & Recreation, Hoopin’ At The Dome was created to promote both the Iowa Games in the city of Des Moines and sport & fitness throughout Iowa. The tournament was played in the shadow of the State Capitol with 94 teams with 507 athletes competing.

Iowa Games Mud Run

The 2012 Iowa Games Mud Run was moved to the Cownie Soccer Complex in Des Moines. This unique 3 mile trail running race, 1 mile fun run and Little Muddy Buddy run was enjoyed by a record 1,811 runners. Runners of all ages and abilities completed the muddy course which featured several obstacles.

Iowa Games Golf Classic

The annual Iowa Games Golf Classic was held at Hyperion Field Club in Johnston for the first time. Sponsors, board of directors and supporters of the ISF made up the 30 foursomes.

100 Day Wellness Challenge

The 100 Day Wellness Challenge is a simple and affordable challenge encouraging Iowans to make healthy choices. Over the 100 days, teams of 2-10 people, compete in friendly competition, tracking activity minutes and/or weight loss through the LHI website. The record 33,700 participants received a T-shirt, weekly motivational tips, unlimited access to online healthy resources, and opportunities to win incentives and prizes.

Live Healthy Iowa Mission

To provide health and wellness opportunities to educate and motivate all Iowans to live a healthy lifestyle. Burst Your Thirst Challenge

Burst Your Thirst Challenge is a six week effort to promote healthy hydration and physical activity to Iowa adults. Teams of 2-10 earned points by reporting water intake and physical activity minutes on a weekly basis. 2012 saw a record 5,074 participants from 97 counties. Participants received LHI water bottles to help track water consumption.

Dog Days of Summer Challenge

New for 2012, LHI offered a unique way for canine owners to walk regularly with their pets through Dog Days of Summer. The pilot program was held primarily in Boone with 92 participants tracking their activity minutes for the month of August.

The Next Step Challenge

In 2012, 5,117 Iowans participated in The Next Step (TNS). TNS is a fall challenge to keep Iowans moving as the weather changes. Participants tracked the number of ‘steps’ each week of the six-week challenge. Participants received a pedometer, weekly motivational tips, as well as, opportunities for incentives and prizes.

100 Day Wellness Challenge

A record 31,004 kids participated in the 100 Day Wellness Challenge in 2012. The program is designed to encourage young Iowans to increase their physical activity levels and make better food choices. Teams of 5-30 youth, from grades kindergarten through twelfth, track minutes of activity. Kids were asked to also track fruits, vegetables, milk and water intake, as well as, screen time. One $1,000 and four $500 prizes were awarded to qualifying teams placed in a random drawing. The winning schools are required to use the funds to purchase physical education, recess or playground equipment.

Fall Fitness Day & Go The Distance Day

On October 5, 2011, 56,466 kids participated in Fall Fitness Day (FFD) while on May 4,2012 a record 77,620 kids participated in, Go the Distance Day (GTDD). Both FFD and GTDD are one-day events in which schools are asked to have the entire enrollment perform 30 minutes of aerobic activity. These events bring awareness to the importance of daily activity in a healthy lifestyle. Each school that achieved 100% participation was entered into a random drawing for cash and prizes. Prize money is required to be used for physical education or playground equipment to promote physical activity and wellness efforts at the winning schools.

Exercising Your Character

As part of Go The Distance Day, the Iowa Sports Foundation, Hy-Vee and Character Counts! brought 8,000 fourth and fifth grade students from central Iowa to Hy-Vee Hall in Des Moines for the Exercising Your Character event. Olympic athletes talked with the students about the importance of exercise, eating healthy and how to practice the Six Pillars of Character Counts! Speakers included NFL kicker Billy Cundiff, Iowa State Football Coach Paul Rhodes and former Hawkeye basketball star BJ Armstrong.

Wheelchair Basketball

ASI sponsors pickup basketball games every Thursday evening in Ankeny. ASI provides 12 sport chairs on-site for athletes to use. Games are non-officiated and casual. The goal is to have fun and experience the sport.

Adaptive Sports Iowa Mission

To provide statewide leadership in the planning, promotion, education and organization of sports and recreation opportunities for physically disabled Iowans. ASI All Star Youth Club

Taking place the hour before our Adult Wheelchair Basketball program, the ASI All Star Youth Club is designed for our younger athletes. This safe, supervised, and coordinated program is intended to serve more as a physical education activity time. Activities include tag, dodge ball, basketball, boccia and other playground type games.

Beep Baseball

In July of 2012, ASI and Ames hosted the Beep Baseball World Series. This annual event played host to 17 beep baseball teams from all over the country as well as a team from Taiwan. Understanding the importance of having a team from the host state represented within the tournament we established the Iowa Reapers, Iowa’s first ever Beep Baseball team. The team is comprised of 10 players and a number of dedicated volunteers.

Track and Field Clinic

In May of 2012 the US Paralympic Track Team sent two Paralympians and two Paralympic coaches for the first ever Paralympic track clinic in Iowa. The all-day clinic was a great start to launching the ASI Track and Field Club. Numerous athletes and coaches attended the clinic at Waukee High School.

RAGBRAI Team

In 2011 ASI established the first team supporting the physically disabled athlete to ride in RAGBRAI. The 2012 ASI RAGBRAI team was comprised of approximately 50 people including volunteers, support crew, and cyclists to take on the 7 day, 500 mile track across Iowa. Now successfully completing two years the ASI team has become a part of the RAGBRAI culture and the Adaptive Sports Iowa brand is recognized amongst the thousands who take part in RAGBRAI.

Winter Experience

In collaboration with our counterparts at Adaptive Adventures from Chicago, IL, ASI offered a snow skiing events at Seven Oaks Recreation near Boone. This two day event presented opportunities for both local instructors to learn the adaptive equipment, as well as, physically disabled participants to experience the sport. Day one included instructor training for local instructors and volunteers. Day two offered sessions of ski and ride clinics for physically disabled participants.

Community Education Events

Throughout the year ASI took part in community education and awareness events in an effort to recruit new athletes, expand public awareness of our mission and represent the physically disabled community effectively. Such events include the Iowa State Fair, SCIA Adaptive Sports Clinic, Iowa Bicycle Summit & Expo and school assemblies. These events allow for ASI athletes to engage the public in a unique and meaningful way.

AWARDS Brian Pearson Memorial Scholarship

In honor of former ISU basketball player Brian Pearson, who died of brain cancer in 1997, the Iowa Games began awarding the Brian Pearson Memorial Scholarship in 1998. Each year, the Iowa Games awards a $1,000 scholarship to one female and one male who exemplify the spirit of Brian Pearson. Only high school juniors are eligible for the scholarship to ensure that fellow students can observe the winners during their senior year to recognize the traits the students showed in order to receive the award. The 2012 Brian Pearson Memorial Scholarship winners were Ann Ku and Nolan Dickson both of Ames High School.

Marty McHone Athlete of the Year In 2003, the Iowa Games Athlete of the Year award was renamed after Marty McHone who was the 1996 Iowa Games Female Athlete of the Year and had competed in the Iowa Games track meet for 16 years. The award annually is given to two Iowa Games athletes who best exemplify the qualities of outstanding integrity, citizenship and athletic achievement. The 2012 Marty McHone Athletes of the Year were Danna Kelly of Boone and Carroll Marty of Ames. Both were also named the National Congress of State Games Athlete of the Year, marking the first time both the male and female athletes were from the same state.

Sean Runyan Adaptive Sports Iowa Athlete of the Year

Named in memory of Sean Runyan, a Central Iowa wheelchair athlete who was the first in the nation to compete in a sanctioned high school athletic event. The 2012 Sean Runyan Adaptive Sports Iowa Athlete of the year was Mario Bennett of Urbandale.

Caring Coach Award

The Caring Coach Award is designed to recognize coaches who have made significant and positive influences on the actions and development of their players. Anyone who has coached a youth team sport in the Iowa Games and has had a positive impact on young people may be nominated for the award. The 2012 Iowa Games Caring Coach was Burton Powley from Des Moines

Official of the Year

The Iowa Games relies heavily on its volunteers, which includes its volunteer officials. In most cases, a volunteer official receives a T-shirt, lunch and an occasional sign of gratitude from an athlete or spectator. Many of our volunteers officiate all day long with no expectations of recognition or reimbursement. The 2012 Winter Iowa Games Official of the Year was Jim Ingrham of Montrose. The 2012 Summer Iowa Games Official of the Year was Fran Long of Fort Dodge.

Iowa Games Volunteer of the Year

This award was designed to reward our volunteers and give them the praise and recognition they deserve for effortlessly giving their time and talents year after year. For many of our volunteers, it is the feeling of accomplishment, sharing in others’ success or just having fun that keeps them returning. The 2012 Winter Iowa Games Volunteer of the Year was John Dodge of Cedar Rapids. Summer Iowa Games Volunteer of the Year was Kim Downard of Ames

Character Counts! Coach of the Year

The Character Counts! Coach of the Year award, sponsored by the Institute of Character Development and the Iowa Games, is awarded to a coach who displays great character traits in the school and community. The award is presented by the IGHSAU at the girls state basketball tournament brunch and the IHSAA at the boys state basketball tournament. The 2012 girls recipient was Roger Wright from Edgewood-Colesburg. The 2012 boys recipient was Mark Hubbard from Waverly-Shell Rock.
